How are you ordering the songs that missed out in the knockout round? thinking.gif

(also why is this the lowest position 'Warrior's Dance' has ever had apart from that first year xx)

Posted by: jafetsigfinns 6th September 2017, 08:33 AM

I'm guessing it's ordered by Points / Number of Voters = Average Points ?

That's the easiest way to do it, so yes magic.gif As far as that knockout round goes, shows how many people really cared enough to bold it mostly.

2007

We say goodbye to 2007 from this game this year - a year I'm sure many will be sad to see go. Not me though, I finally don't have to add masses of undeserved points to the DEVIL (otherwise known as Sexy! No No No) any more.

Surprisingly, given I mostly just remember With Every Heartbeat and Umbrella dominating, the former doing generally better in the final, but the latter coming in strong to win for the last three years in the yearly round, there have been two other winners, the first two years saw the victories going to Say It Right and About You Now. Another thing I have to point out is the steady and beautiful rise of Misery Business over the last few years, ending on a high of #7. Perhaps if we'd continued going it would have won a year. Speaking of Paramore, CrushCrushCrush, along with Goodbye Mr A, Green Light and Pumpkin Soup, made it in to the final for the first and only time this year, while Robyn's Handle Me, Hard-Fi's Suburban Knights, Gwen Stefani's 4 In The Morning and Booty Luv's Shine haven't made a final appearance since the very first running of this round.

Not me though, I finally don't have to add masses of undeserved points to the DEVIL (otherwise known as Sexy! No No No) any more.

The first 50 of the top 200 are songs that didn't go to the final two rounds so we're not going to spend a WHOLE lot of time down here, hence 25 at a time. Notable movements include Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart continuing its unfortunate slide to almost out of the top 200, Tennis Court and Break The Ice reentering from final midtable territory to a first glimpse of the top 200, as with Moment 4 Life and surprisingly, only just now for the glorious Ride, Lana's clear career highlight (for watashi).

There's a new entry here from Alan Walker's Faded, one of the huge highlights of chart music from last year, the winner of the Multichart EOY and a song I'd hoped would do far far better in this sad.gif It still has plenty of years to make up the ground but I was hoping for a lot better.

Promises enters the top 200 for the first time alongside its sister track Guilt, which has been surfing the highs for two years, long may Nero reign. They are the best musical act that shares a name with an ancient emperor and there is not one bit of competition for that title that I can think of. None AT ALL. Temper Trap manage to avoid the disappointment of two years ago and get to increase their peak by a momentous 1 place. Much rejoicing, I'm sure.

I can't let a GA track that I dislike go past without saying something about it (a sacred ROTD tradition), so... Untouchable falls hahahahaaa....Onwards.

153 196 2012 Nicki Minaj - Starships 241 37 6.514 ( 146 - 105 - 104 - 196 - 153 )
152 47 2015 Years & Years - Shine 241 37 6.514 ( 47 - 152 )
151 133 2012 Florence & The Machine - Spectrum 250 37 6.757 ( 84 - 81 - 154 - 133 - 151 )

Up to 150, meaning that next up is the losers from the knockout round. But first, the songs that most narrowly missed out going further. Surprisingly, only one from 2007 in this whole batch of 50, there were more voters for that round which flaws my system a little, but the lucky one is Big Girls Don't Cry, ending its run on a rather average (for it) #175.

Runnin' (Lose It All) sees the top 200 for the first time, and then we get to a number of new entries, All My Friends from Snakehips, the still strange and unexpected return of Mike Posner to pop cultural relevance (exceedingly briefly however), and 99 Souls coming in after missing out on the whole competition seemingly last year.

Lights falls from as high as #50, P!nk has what I think is the largest climb overall with Try (unless anything in the final was at #420ish or lower last year, which they might actually be. I haven't calculated that yet although I can confirm I have calculated the results and I know the winner.

On an unrelated note, Ariana has two entries, one of them new with Side To Side inching just ahead of Love Me Harder. Little Mix's song about an ex and Grimes' wonderful Kill vs Maim (a song I never expected to see up here and am really pleased to see it getting some huge success, it's an indie-pop stormer of a song)

Shine falls from #47, so that's the most high-profile casualty but I always thought King was the better song anyway.

Tragic to see the loss of Shine although at least its still top 200. Kill v Maim is very surprising, especially to be so high! Thanks for doing these :3

A pretty good year for Katy this year, at least in comparison to the previous year where California Gurls absolutely tanked for example. Still </3 over Shout Out To My Ex being so close to making the knockout round.

The biggest losers from the knockout round, or at least the lower half of the losers, is up next. Their score has to be between 1 and 2 as it's actually a measure of how many people bothered to give them an extra push through (as well as if less people voted for them, they also got disadvantaged). Lowest is Madonna with 4 Minutes which has done rather well in recent years, comparatively. A new entry for Final Song follows Latch falling from the top 100 and Wrecking Ball recovers from its awful year last time.

Up a few more places, and after mostly fairly uninteresting movements, we get to One Dance, which managed to still get this high even when I thought everyone was going to be burned out on it. Sad times.... because I still hate it, where are all the rest of you?

Stronger goes out on a stupendous high, over a hundred places higher than it's ever been. Kanye can certainly do well here but clearly Stronger hasn't done qutie this well before. He leaves with Rule The World, also seeing a big increase, and Beautiful Liar, which fell out from 2007 last time, won the first round and barrelled its way through ROTD's punishing formats to end on a massive high as well! Well done Beyoncé and Shakira.

A new entry for Cheap Thrills, a massive climb for Roar, getting back to where it normally is after it, like Wrecking Ball, had a big fall last year, and then the final two in this section are former top 20 entries, but Someone Like You and Midnight City have been mostly declining since they entered. I hope M83 turns it around, that's still glorious. Adele can keep her dull ballads though x

Sorry, I was busy cycling yesterday and I got out of rhythm with this. And probably lost a lot of momentum for those of you wondering how the final round went. That'll get started tomorrow, as soon as I copy the chart runs over (kill me). Anyway, here are the final records of the songs that missed out on the final.

The new entry On Hold was the big surprise of this year's ROTD for me, somehow making it through every round and fell short of the final by only a point. That's a good start to its ten years in this game, I wonder how long that'll hold. I never considered the xx as contenders, but here it is. It's just ahead of another surprise contender, well, #Beautiful had its breakthrough last year but I remain surprised that it managed to last more than a year.

Shake It Off continues to unfortunately peak outside the top 100, some, like me, might not use such complimentary terminology. The Way I Are and former silver medalist Say It Right go out this time, for Say It Right, it's the lowest position it's ever reached, so that's really rather unfortunate for it, but it had a good innings nevertheless.

Sidenote, Diana Vickers' Once in the section just below this I think is the biggest climber of this edition, not Try as previously advertised, going up a whole 433 places. Unless something in the final has beaten that, but I can't imagine it...

Posted by: Riser 12th September 2017, 02:27 AM

Nooo, that's really tragic for Say It Right, to plummet so far down in its last eligible year! Deserves top 10 but should've maintained its run of being top 40 every year sad.gif

100 NE 2016 Clean Bandit (feat. Louisa Johnson) - Tears 31 ( 100 )
99 62 2014 G.R.L - Ugly Heart 70 ( 96 - 62 - 99 )
98 175 2012 Marina & The Diamonds - Primadonna 104 ( 147 - 113 - 166 - 175 - 98 )
97 121 2013 Lana Del Rey vs Cedric Gervais - Summertime Sadness 114 ( 31 - 107 - 121 - 97 )
96 NE 2016 Kungs vs Cookin On 3 Burners - This Girl 117 ( 96 )
95 108 2009 La Roux - In For The Kill 117 ( X - 181 - 94 - 294 - 176 - 61 - 108 - 95 )
94 98 2008 Katy Perry - Hot N Cold 129 ( 88 - 42 - 18 - 41 - 43 - 38 - 75 - 98 - 94 )
93 92 2013 Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble 129 ( 73 - 79 - 92 - 93 )
92 0 2016 Clean Bandit (feat. Anne-Marie & Sean Paul) - Rockabye 133 ( - 92 )
91 200 2014 Lorde - Team 134 ( 250 - 200 - 91 )

Isn't it about time I properly started getting in on the results of the final round? First up, the stragglers, including three 2016 songs. Let's talk about that. Because the first one, the one that's entering at 100... finished some way on the bottom. I'm not sure how Tears actually got to the final, but it has 31 points and that's less than half its nearest challenger. And if you added its points with that one, Ugly Heart, falling down after doing midtable last year, it still wouldn't come close to the third-last. That third-last song however is Primadonna, which after 4 years outside the top 100 has snuck in and bagged itself a place. It's a good Marina song and I always like seeing her get widespread recognition.

The other new entries are This Girl, and Rockabye, both of the dance persuasion, and after a good summer jam of This Girl, there's another entry for Clean Bandit. I hope Rockabye especially can rise in future years, it's a class huge hit anthem that never gets tiring and may be on its way to overtaking even Rather Be for myself. It's unquestionably amazing... said by someone who loves nearly everything Clean Bandit do. I'm a slightly less than neutral source. CleanBandit4life

Even the pop songs in this section seem to have some dance connection, there's the divisive remix of Summertime Sadness that stands in for the beautiful original in this competition (at least I imagine some of its voters think it's the original), it gets back into the top 100 for the first time since its debut year. The dubsteppy I Knew You Were Trouble is Taylor Swift's only appearance in the top 100 this time and it's still really near the bottom, having meandered around this position before. And In For The Kill, much more of a veteran has been in and out but falls on the side of in this year, rather nicely. Definitely the secondary La Roux song though.

The prime Lorde song this year is Team, which scraped the top 200 last year but rocketed through it this year to compete in the final, it's a very sweet song so I'm cool with that. And one of Katy's big hitters, although not her last song in this thing, Hot N Cold climbs up from its lowest position last year to match with Taylor Swift. One more year to er... decide what temperature we are in regards this one. Don't make me do puns.

Posted by: THEO. 13th September 2017, 06:44 PM

I have wanted to comment on the previous results but I didn't actually vote for anything other than the final so couldn't really complain about anything not going my way tongue.gif

Anyway, no real losses for me so far (just my 1- and 2-pointer!) although "Rockabye" would probably be higher for me were it not so recent - it's definitely their defining song, I can't really listen to "Rather Be" anymore so I hope that's out in the next couple of batches.

"In for the Kill" and "Primadonna" are the worst there so glad they're out early too.

90 96 2014 Ariana Grande (feat. Iggy Azalea) - Problem 135 ( 112 - 96 - 90 )
89 61 2012 Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe 135 ( 47 - 32 - 36 - 61 - 89 )
88 173 2010 Katy B - Katy On A Mission 136 ( X - 200 - 170 - 86 - 106 - 173 - 88 )
87 319 2011 Lady Gaga - Judas 137 ( 410 - 217 - 414 - 303 - 319 - 87 )
86 NE 2016 Weeknd (feat. Daft Punk) - Starboy 139 ( 86 )
85 NE 2016 Zara Larsson - Lush Life 141 ( 85 )
84 180 2012 Rudimental - Feel The Love 144 ( 37 - 47 - 70 - 180 - 84 )
83 32 2015 Major Lazer (feat. DJ Snake & MŘ) - Lean On 145 ( 32 - 83 )
82 103 2011 Katy Perry (feat. Kanye West) - E.T. 146 ( 165 - 114 - 61 - 98 - 103 - 82 )
81 106 2009 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone 148 ( 181 - 48 - 51 - 75 - 155 - 174 - 106 - 81 )

20 songs in and all years have made an appearance bar the oldest year, the 2007 songs in the final have fought well on their last try.

We start off this batch of ten with Ariana Grande moving up some spaces with Problem, a resurgent Judas from Lady Gaga coming from a constant position of the middle-bottom of the yearly final pile to suddenly in the top 100, and Carly Rae Jepsen falling to her lowest position yet with Call Me Maybe. This seems all totally normal and definitely won't be repeated further up the track.

Katy B is in between these three pop titans with her debut Katy On A Mission, not my favourite of hers by a long shot but this year, it is for you guys, coming within two positions of matching her peak three years ago. Two new entries for 2016, The Weeknd with the first of his very popular Daft Punk collaborations is two points behind the star of Buzzjack's newest solo pop female artist forum, Zara Larsson's Lush Life - coming in the bottom 20 of the final round may not be the performance she Lee had hoped for.

Feel The Love recovers to sit alongside other big year-defining hits like Lean On, falling 61 places from its high debut last year (overplay still making it steadily less bearable), and I'm Not Alone getting back into the top 100 after a year away. Then E.T adds to the list of Katy Perry tracks that have gone out early in a ROTD final, but rest assured, she still has one in that couldn't possibly be out in the very next batch (yes Rob I'm milking this).

80 15 2012 Gotye (feat. Kimbra) - Somebody That I Used To Know 150 ( 19 - 62 - 49 - 15 - 80 )
79 112 2008 Killers - Human 150 ( 46 - 73 - 109 - 113 - 200 - 154 - 249 - 112 - 79 )
78 144 2010 Lady Gaga - Alejandro 151 ( 79 - 209 - 57 - 124 - 124 - 144 - 78 )
77 157 2011 Jennifer Lopez (feat. Pitbull) - On The Floor 155 ( 80 - 94 - 104 - 114 - 157 - 77 )
76 141 2015 Calvin Harris & Disciples - How Deep Is Your Love 156 ( 141 - 76 )
75 129 2008 Sam Sparro - Black And Gold 157 ( X - 170 - 222 - 255 - 155 - 92 - 81 - 129 - 75 )
74 40 2008 Britney Spears - Womanizer 159 ( 51 - 87 - 129 - 112 - 275 - 63 - 121 - 40 - 74 )
73 79 2015 Adele - Hello 161 ( 79 - 73 )
72 38 2011 Nicki Minaj - Super Bass 164 ( 110 - 103 - 14 - 47 - 38 - 72 )
71 204 2013 Zedd (feat. Foxes) - Clarity 165 ( 100 - 188 - 204 - 71 )

It's definitely surprising to me that it's only now that Somebody That I Used To Know falls to 80. Wonderful song it is but it always seems to be very much rooted in 2012 so I guess people must have good memories of that year. It's just drawing level with another atypical Buzzjack fave, Human carrying on the Killers' legacy in this game now they don't have an automatic top 10 with Mr Brightside anymore. It is my favourite song in this batch of 10, having been a personal anthem for me longer than almost all other pop music, a song I recognised as 'liking' when it was out. I paid no attention to almost any music before 2010 so that was quite the special song to make it through. So very nice to see it back in the top 100 in its penultimate year, only next year will tell if it'll take an almost symmetrical run and end its run in the mid-40s or higher.

Alejandro, probably Gaga's best song in this final (that melody <3), is in the top 100 for only the third time, a constant in the mid-high end ROTD but not quite a breakthrough. And it's a peak for On The Floor, 3 above where it entered. It felt like a song that would fade out of recognition over the years but clearly a revival's on the cards, these pop faves don't ever completely go away. Until I eject them for being more than a decade old.

How Deep Is Your Love halves its position from last year to bring Calvin Harris's dance hit 101 to the final, just behind two older 2008 hits, one of which, Black And Gold sees a peak as it gets into the top 75 for the first time, the other, Britney's older pop fave that didn't go away, falling from its peak it gained last year. One more year, Britney.

Then Adele moves a little bit, Superbass falls from its three-year high but still respectable for it, and finally Clarity makes a big jump. With Stay The Night (which I think I prefer these days for its relentless instrumental) making its first mark on the final, it's been a good year for Zedd. Clarity climbing over 100 places is wonderful for the taste of Buzzjack, so often my insanity.

(setting a goal for myself: complete this by Sunday evening!)

61 39 2009 Lady Gaga - Paparazzi 180 ( 40 - 40 - 72 - 62 - 151 - 163 - 39 - 61 )

Ghost washes out its pain from last year to be Ella Henderson's highest song again... as well as being the only Ella Henderson song that anyone cares about. A new entry to the top 100 follows it, Still Into You draws with Untouched and I Feel It Coming on 168 points. For Paramore, I'm very pleased to see their best hope for the future once Misery Business bows out next year going rather strong in its first final. For the comparatively ancient Untouched, it's a big new peak after they became a top 100 hangaround 2 years ago, but never quite this high. For Weeknd/Daft Punk part 2 it's a strong new entry that they have plenty of time to improve on. I now, having sort of experienced myself on this and Starboy can say I like them but they still seem so invisible as hit songs to me. Same with many of this year's hits to be quite honest. How will I do commentary next year?

Halo has remained fairly steady the last 3 years but returns to #66 as it was four years ago, while another Lady Gaga song comes back to one off of its peak, The Edge Of Glory being the best thing from her second album.

Move was once the clear undisputed best Little Mix song, in reality and in this competition, but the latter has now changed as it slips and Black Magic moves ahead of it. And we have our first casualty from last year's top 10 as Disturbia falls to a position that's fairly bad for it, but it seems to have settled into a trend of doing well one year and averagely the next, so could go out on a high? Don't Stop The Music also slips from a peak last year, but not as badly. Same for Paparazzi, as it makes this section a bit too crowded with popstar tracks. And can I just mention we're now 40 songs in and STILL haven't seen a 2007 song, where are they all hiding?

Clarity is one of the best dance songs of all time so glad to see it do well

Posted by: THEO. 14th September 2017, 11:03 PM

"Ghost" is the biggest casualty for me, so far. I can't believe it's not made the top 40 here before! Also a shame about "The Edge of Glory" but the final really was oversaturated with Gaga tracks as always.

Posted by: RobBob 14th September 2017, 11:58 PM

My stomach is tensed for every section revealed, awaiting Teenage Dream to drop and for me to deflate for the year. I'm quite glad to see Disturbia not so high up this year, it is a great track but I've always found it to do a little too well in this as she has quite a few tracks that I find better than it and more relevant to her as an artist.

Posted by: StillJupiter 15th September 2017, 12:30 AM

Crazy to see Disturbia going top 10 one year when pop classics like Paparazzi, Halo and Edge have never made it barely into the top 40 and 50.

60 56 2009 Little Boots - Remedy 180 ( 45 - 50 - 84 - 150 - 83 - 119 - 56 - 60 )
59 167 2015 Sia - Elastic Heart 181 ( 167 - 59 )
58 363 2009 Florence & The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) 186 ( X - X - 17 - 74 - 51 - 41 - 363 - 58 )
57 41 2009 La Roux - Bulletproof 191 ( X - 330 - 125 - 211 - 80 - 74 - 41 - 57 )
56 58 2007 Kate Nash - Foundations 195 ( 159 - X - X - 125 - 138 - 81 - 56 - 63 - 58 - 56 )
55 45 2007 Britney Spears - Gimme More 197 ( 40 - 52 - 67 - 62 - 92 - 132 - 16 - 18 - 45 - 55 )
54 55 2008 Alphabeat - Fascination 198 ( X - 159 - 351 - 128 - 90 - 87 - 82 - 55 - 54 )
53 19 2015 Years & Years - King 198 ( 19 - 53 )
52 102 2011 Florence & The Machine - Shake It Out 199 ( 38 - 82 - 58 - 185 - 102 - 52 )
51 75 2015 Justin Bieber - Sorry 201 ( 75 - 51 )

They're here. The songs leaving us have finally shown us two of their number. Bringing up the rear of the 2007 cohort, it's the foundations. I mean, Kate Nash has managed to go out equalling her peak a few years ago and well, she's pretty much remained steady around here so that's a strong run to leave on, while Gimme More has had a revival for about the same length of time, but it's had a strong run throughout, only dipping outside of the top 100 once. This is the last year with Gimme More as Britney's highest song, Womanizer is now her best bet. One year left for Fascination which increases its peak by one place as it continues its slow but inexorable climb up the board. Win on your out, please.

In fact, discounting three 2015 songs as King drops quite a bit from its debut, Elastic Heart climbs up over a 100 places and the enigmatically popular Sorry moves a bit more modestly, this is quite an old round with only one other song from the current decade. That song is Florence & The Machine's Shake It Out, which has recovered from its downward spiral to reach its second highest position ever, just shy of 200 points. It's just ahead of another Florence song (and is therefore her highest) but it looks clear to me that that was an almighty blip for Rabbit Heart last year. Though it wasn't around in this competition for the first two years it's been a 2009 big-hitter for most of the rest so it seems fitting to see it return to normality.

Two other 2009 songs left, Remedy and Bulletproof, both members of that year's investment in high quality L-pop acts, and two songs I love a lot more than any of the competing Lady songs in this final. Shame their movements are a bit uninteresting.

Posted by: RobBob 15th September 2017, 10:45 PM

OMG YAY Teenage Dream made top 50 <3 Sorry for sounding like a broken record on the Katy front but someone has to be a cheerleader these days x

Love that chart run for Fascination and it continues to feel just as wonderfully feel good now as it did 9 years ago. Elastic Heart is a weird one though, has never felt like a particularly big or notably really loved song, so seeing it as high as #59 is a bit shocking.

Posted by: Brébino 16th September 2017, 12:23 AM

Hope that 'On Hold' can do better in future years as #101 would be an annoying peak for it, though I imagine it'll probably end up being pretty forgotten except by a small handful so that's probably wishful thinking. Quite surprising 'Foundations' never went higher than #56 here (that's the song that kept The xx out right?)

The drop for 'Disturbia' *.* bai ~ Wott at 'I Feel It Coming' actually beating 'Starboy' tho ;o + yass at Lorde's nice new peak even though 91st in the final isn't too great ~

Shall try and pay closer attention to the top 50, I always forget to check this thread when it gets to results these days!

Posted by: StillJupiter 16th September 2017, 10:00 AM

Elastic Heart > Chandelier for me.

Funny blip for Flo last year. Can't believe we're up to top 50 already! Hoping for some shockers further up.

50 66 2011 Chase & Status (feat. Liam Bailey) - Blind Faith 204 ( 279 - 216 - 217 - 275 - 66 - 50 )
49 72 2014 Little Mix - Black Magic 204 ( 72 - 49 )
48 31 2010 Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) 205 ( 154 - 161 - 77 - 84 - 71 - 31 - 48 )
47 67 2009 Lady Gaga - Poker Face 206 ( 2 - 34 - 40 - 22 - 55 - 87 - 67 - 47 )
46 34 2007 Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love 207 ( 21 - 1 - 4 - 108 - 61 - 21 - 8 - 25 - 34 - 46 )
45 105 2011 Drake (feat. Rihanna) - Take Care 209 ( 244 - 236 - 132 - 136 - 105 - 45 )
44 21 2009 Lily Allen - The Fear 210 ( 29 - 10 - 48 - 48 - 39 - 42 - 21 - 44 )
43 20 2007 Girls Aloud - Call The Shots 217 ( 30 - 10 - 16 - 17 - 55 - 11 - 41 - 10 - 20 - 43 )
42 NE 2016 Beyoncé - Formation 219 ( - 42 )
41 44 2008 M.I.A - Paper Planes 219 ( X - X - 52 - 36 - 44 - 28 - 9 - 44 - 41 )

And we say goodbye to one of the few former winners that we have in this race, Bleeding Love. Never again will I be able to regale everyone with the tale of how the winner fell to 4th place, and then to 108th place in the space of merely a year (because of how the rounds worked back then, coming 11th in the yearly final meant you were straight out. It's done pretty decently for itself in recent years, getting top 10 once more and being a regular presence in the final after recovery, and it leaves in 46th. Just above it, exiting on quite a low, is Call The Shots, which can celebrate 10 years straight through in the top 60 at least, but never managing to peak higher than #10. And there passes one of Girls Aloud strongest chances in this game, and certainly the best of the lot they have in this final. The other is higher however. Also peaking at #10 is the strong 2009 contender of The Fear, which always does amazingly in the yearly round then falters a bit in the final, but still always top 50.

A rather phenomenal change in fortunes for Blind Faith last year continues this year as it just builds on its success and gets to 50th best in the decade, a wonderful result for Chase & Status and amazingly, the DnB duo aren't done yet. Blind Faith draws with the highest Little Mix song, as Black Magic moves further on up from its respectable debut last year. It's a pretty well-made popular Buzzjack hit so no surprise. Just above it, Only Girl falls some places but still has its second-highest position ever, last year was clearly a huge high for Ri, but this year isn't all that bad either.

Speaking of Rihanna, just ahead of that, I see what I think is the first Drake song to ever sully my top 100. Not that it's the worst one, I actually kind of like Take Care and after that steadily increasing run it was probably only a matter of time. Poker Face climbs twenty places again, two more years to make it to #7.

Formation is a new entry and now Beyoncé's highest song in this, I honestly can't recall it as that whole Beyoncé era seemed a bit... not so good to me but I might recall Formation being one of the less bad ones? *gets lynched* And then #41 is another former top 10, Paper Places snuck into the top 10 two years ago but has returned to its more normal positioning of around the 40s, one more year for that as well.

40 258 2015 Grimes - Flesh Without Blood 221 ( 258 - 40 )
39 43 2011 Adele - Rolling In The Deep 224 ( 8 - 18 - 24 - 51 - 43 - 39 )
38 NE 2016 Christine & The Queens - Tilted / Christine 224 ( - 38 )
37 12 2007 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black 225 ( 23 - 118 - 82 - 4 - 3 - 9 - 9 - 5 - 12 - 37 )
36 NE 2016 Fifth Harmony (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) - Work from Home 226 ( 36 )

Grimes' Flesh Without Blood is probably the least commercially successful song in the final, and it was probably a contender among the entire 600 when it entered last year. That doesn't matter at RecDec, we don't discriminate and Flesh Without Blood gets to take home a 'top 40 of the decade' award to put on its shelf. It really a wonderful indie-pop song and I'm delighted it's gotten this much recognition, especially when it's up against such pop titans as Rolling In The Deep, the best and most lasting Adele hit from 21 and indeed overall this time, as Adele tops out at #39, up a bit from the past two years but not quite that top 10 it entered at.

It's drawing with a good new entry in Tilted, another wonderful pop song, a bit more accessible than Grimes, such that I almost called it indie but it isn't really, it's just a bit more... French (there's a style of French pop that's quite noticeable, I'm not sure how to describe it, it's a bit je ne sais quoi). Yes, it did have to sell out of its original language to become a hit and knowing both versions, Christine sounds a bit more naturally put together now, but the inclusion of both versions probably helped any disputes over that and it's registered a very good start in ROTD, long may it continue.

Back To Black unfortunately exits at the lowest position it's been for many years, but it was a top 10 stalwart for 5 years before last year so it can't complain at not having a good run. It's one of the many pop giants we lose with saying goodbye to 2007, just a bit of a shame it came this early.

Work From Home's appeal still mystifies me most out of any song in this final, while it's only my second-least favourite, I can see why people might like the one that's worse than it, I really can't here. Mystery aside, it's done rather well for itself, we'll see where this goes next year, Fifth Harmony fans xx

Ah, "Bleeding Love" probably doesn't get enough love on this site, it really is an excellent pop song (with even Attitude Magazine placing it above anything by Little Mix in their recent list of best songs to come out of The X Factor!) Although saying that, doesn't that make "Work from Home" the highest-placed song from an alumni? laugh.gif

Surprised to see "Formation" just missing the top 40, it scream un-Buzzjack but glad to be proven wrong!

I've just had a look and yes... X-Factor at least. mellow.gif Girls Aloud would probably count for that on a wider definition and they have one left.

That's the other thing those two have in common then. ph34r.gif (okay Iz you're laying it on just a LITTLE strong)

35 37 2010 Lady Gaga & Beyoncé - Telephone 226 ( 26 - 23 - 38 - 45 - 44 - 37 - 35 )
34 23 2012 David Guetta (feat. Sia) - Titanium 227 ( 7 - 17 - 33 - 23 - 34 )
33 73 2014 Beyoncé (feat. Jay-Z) - Drunk In Love 230 ( 67 - 73 - 33 )
32 9 2014 Katy B - Crying For No Reason 230 ( 14 - 9 - 32 )
31 28 2013 Bastille - Pompeii 232 ( 46 - 101 - 28 - 31 )

So when I said Beyoncé's highest song was Formation, I... er.. forgot all about this section. My mind compartmentalised away those songs that only have Beyoncé on them, of which Formation is the highest. But no, she's on two here, one on her collaboration with Lady Gaga which continues its moving around between #20 and #50 with little sign of aging (even though to my mind it's aged very poorly), and the much better Drunk In Love from Beyoncé's Beyoncé-d album, a track I always thought was rather inspiring and anthemy as it showed off one of the most lasting relationships in pop very nicely... and is a fitting tribute to the sound of being drunk in love as well. That sounds kind of right. It more than halves its peak as it becomes the REAL best-performing Beyoncé song this year.

In between those two is the wonderful Titanium, Guetta's career highlight and a song that thrust Sia into the limelight, just reaching its lowest position yet but I'm not worried, there's plenty of time for it to make up, it sounds brilliant now I haven't heard it for a while.

Crying For No Reason was looking to become 2014's winner in the final and it's done that for two years but two songs have edged ahead of it this time as it falls out of the top 15. Still a very respectable score and I wouldn't be surprised to see it back towards the top in future years, it has a very wide appeal and won over even Katy B doubters. She's good though, isn't she?

Finally, Pompeii moves slightly down from last year. I saw them live this year in the beautiful setting of Cornwall's Eden Project and Pompeii was a moment upon moments to end the night with. Very pleased it's still in Buzzjack's favour.

Yeah, I wouldn't count GA but I guess they're the highest-placed reality act?

Out of interest, why wasn't "Touch" included this year? I'd say that's a contender for winner of this contest in future editions - as of next year there'll only be two former winners included unless there's a shock this year, right?

Sorry, I realise that's a lot of questions laugh.gif

Interesting that you think Telephone has aged badly Iz, it's actually one of the few Gaga songs that I think has aged quite well - it is Bad Romance for me that hasn't aged as well even though at the time I found it glorious.

Oh and YES at Grimes scraping in that top 40! Amazing result for her wub.gif

Yes for GA.

Because I'm a bit out of touch with the exact workings of the charts and a bit of a lapsed Little Mix fan I didn't question Touch's absence (someone would have needed to have nominated it), but taking a look at it, with that peak of #4 first attained in the last week of 2016 and then 5 further weeks with it at that peak, it's going to be one of THOSE tracks where I don't know which year to put it in (I think my ruling for that type of track, I've done the same with Rihanna's Stay, is to put it in the year after so I may actually just have it ready for the 2017 round next time). From what I hear about it, I've heard it a bit, but yes, I agree, it could do very well once it gets nominated.

I think it's a combination of the production and the subject matter on Telephone for me, I liked it more than Bad Romance at the time but I can't bring myself to sit through it these days, ironic coming from a metalhead but those particular synths give me a headache now. Meanwhile Bad Romance is still the 7/10 'k, this is rather pleasant' pop track it always was.

Formation is so overrated, one of my worst Beyoncé songs, glad to see Drunk In Love is higher for her.

30 14 2014 Sia - Chandelier 234 ( 52 - 14 - 30 )
29 256 2009 Chase & Status (feat. Plan B) - End Credits 235 ( X - X - 231 - 153 - 223 - 276 - 256 - 29 )
28 18 2008 Coldplay - Viva La Vida 240 ( 15 - 51 - 15 - 32 - 28 - 79 - 17 - 18 - 28 )
27 69 2013 Justin Timberlake - Mirrors 240 ( 57 - 55 - 69 - 27 )
26 22 2013 Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell) - Get Lucky 242 ( 35 - 16 - 22 - 26 )

Alert! Buzzjack traditional gender roles take a role reversal here as Sia's highest song in Chandelier, is the only song with any credited girls at all in this entire batch of 5. It falls from its high last year to come to a median between the two other results it's had.

There's a massive and very welcome change as the beautiful and thought-provoking End Credits comes in from years in the 200-zone to all the way right up to 29th place. I'm so pleased for it as it's become one of my default high scorers, the song's lyrics being gently sung by Plan B over an instrumental backdrop that visualises through sound the final act of one's life and floating, disembodied from your former life, it may be a DnB song, but it's also the art of dying in a song. It's quite beautiful and I'm very glad it's got this recognition, but better movements are to come.

Viva La Vida spends its penultimate year dropping ten places. In contrast to End Credits, this song about the beauties of life is still reminiscent and has some lyrics dealing with the end. It's still possibly the most anthemic Coldplay have ever been, I don't see them getting this high again once it bows out, but one more year for it to fight through.

Mirrors breaks through quite a bit out of its slumping ways to get into the top 30 for the first time, while its 2013 partner and big return for the then inactive early 00s Daft Punk has Get Lucky fall a bit but mostly stay fairly stable as it continues to crossover into being one of the most enduringly popular tracks of this decade so far.

YES End Credits wub.gif best song in the final by miles, what an amazing & impressive climb!

Posted by: Chez Wombat 16th September 2017, 05:26 PM

Wow at Chase & Status, Blind Faith being that high is surprising enough, but End Credits ohmy.gif It's an absolutely beautiful song that remains criminally underrated like you said so I hope it continues to do well for the duration of it's time here.

Viva la Vida to go out on a high next year plz x

25 60 2007 Paramore - Misery Business 243 ( X - X - X - 487 - 286 - 386 - 204 - 137 - 60 - 25 )
24 17 2007 Sugababes - About You Now 243 ( 24 - 9 - 9 - 21 - 56 - 27 - 13 - 13 - 17 - 24 )
23 29 2007 Girls Aloud - Sexy! No No No 244 ( X - 42 - 99 - 104 - 177 - 73 - 30 - 22 - 29 - 23 )
22 51 2013 HAIM - Falling 244 ( X - 245 - 51 - 22 )
21 124 2014 Ariana Grande (feat. Zedd) - Break Free 246 ( 143 - 124 - 21 )

To finish off my posting these throughout the day, here's the final section before the top 20. Featuring 3 2007 songs, it's mostly going to be about reminiscing of the greats that we'll never see again. For two of the three, at least.

We start off with possibly one of the most incredible ten-year climbs ROTD has ever seen, as Misery Business does me proud and goes out leaving behind the most beautiful chart run. From not even appearing in its first three goes, to struggling in the rounds where I first started voting, steadily more and more Paramore fans got behind their best classic and it kept going. From the bottom of the 2007 final, to the midtable, to making the semi-finals, to finally, these last two years, making the finals and finishing this year as one of the major players in the entire thing. It's been my favourite thing about adding up the set of 2007 tracks these past few years, and of course it would be, it's well up there in my all-time list so... well done, Misery Business, we'll see you in another life.

About You Now has had a much steadier run, only once dipping out of the overall top 30. A strong pop song that I remember being into at the time, unusually, it's lasted all these years as one of the most enduring tracks, indeed, the most enduring track according to this, that the Sugababes ever did. And it'll probably be, the last we see of them in this competition (for the most part, as Get Sexy and Wear My Kiss haven't really been lighting up any rounds). It has been in the top 10 twice, a great run for a great song.

Then, there's Sexy! I will miss Sexy, in all honesty, it's one of the few tracks in here that I have strong enough negative feelings about to spew (hopefully amusing rather than vindictive) vitriol at it, although I guess Work From Home isn't a bad replacement. I won't miss people thinking it is a good song and voting it, for the last four years, into a position between #22 and #30, and two of those times, being the highest Girls Aloud track in the process as Call The Shots gave deference. This is one of those two. It is a really annoying track, but for the fans of it, it's gone out on its second highest position and it's only slightly below the first position so you've done well here.

The final two tracks in this section break up the farewell party a bit and instead are fairly new climbers, HAIM proving that HAIM can always beat Girls Aloud at their own game (it's not their own game but I have Buzzmemes to reference (and they haven't really beaten Sexy, they've only drawn with it, I don't care enough to tiebreak anything outside of the top 10, but on vote numbers, HAIM actually got one more!)) and be an incredible band in their own right as Falling is some stunning pop that is very welcome up here. May it not live up to its title for years.

And then, Ariana comes in with Break Free. That run kind of expresses my own feelings on it, I was indifferent when it was released but the video and the way it doesn't age and my way of picking up more of Zedd's wonderful production skills the more I listen to him means that this is one of my favourite of her tracks and one of the best pop tracks of the last few years for me now. Fitting.

I'll go through the top 20 tomorrow.

To remind you of what's left and if anyone wants to, do some speculation, here it is in alphabetical order:

Ariana Grande - One Last Time
Ariana Grande - Into You
Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share
Clean Bandit (feat. Jess Glynne) - Rather Be
Ellie Goulding - Figure 8

20 10 2012 Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks 247 ( 54 - 106 - 48 - 10 - 20 )
19 26 2012 Lana Del Rey - Born To Die 251 ( 104 - 119 - 189 - 26 - 19 )
18 343 2009 Muse - Uprising 257 ( X - 278 - 259 - 388 - 210 - 177 - 343 - 18 )
17 30 2012 Solange - Losing You 263 ( 188 - 77 - 21 - 30 - 17 )

The only song in the top 20 to score under 250 points, Little Talks drops from its rather shock appearance in the top 10 last year, but it did win the 2012 round this time, so that's not a bad performance for an indie-folk classic. It's certainly become one of the easiest to love alt anthems from this decade, what there are of those now, and it adds a nice bit of variety to the top end of ROTD.

Lana getting two entries in the top 20 is very good for her, but here falls one of those. It looks really surprising that Born To Die was so underrated in this until very recently, it's always got rave reviews, but clearly that's only come to the fore as far as voting here goes and it gets a new peak sitting in the top 20. Losing You has always, by contrast, done far better and is definitely the least commercially successful song in the top 20, but it's had a fanbase on Buzzjack that's carried it towards the top end and this year is no exception as it too gains a new peak.

The only song here not from 2012 (for the year most represented in the top 20 it's lost 3 out of its six right out of the gate, and that's just made me realise that there's one year not represented at all in the top 20, that being 2008, whose highest was Viva La Vida), is Muse's Uprising and what an incredible rise this one has had. It was my +30 in the final because it's a clear winner for me on every level, upbeat, fun rhythm and meaningful lyrics, combining into what is all but the perfect rock anthem, but this has really shocked me. In a good way, it's a much nicer peak for this incredible song than #177, and it meant that this has ended up being the underdog of the top 20, out a bit early, but it's done so well for itself that I am very, very satisfied with this.

How is Figure 8 so high? I like it, but I think she can do better! It's not all that really.

Hoping Umbrella, One Last Time or Teenage Dream can win wub.gif.

16 77 2010 Katy Perry - Teenage Dream 281 ( 154 - 161 - 77 - 84 - 59 - 77 - 16 )
15 42 2012 Ellie Goulding - Figure 8 286 ( 120 - 160 - 153 - 42 - 15 )
14 13 2011 Lana Del Rey - Video Games 287 ( 52 - 42 - 43 - 45 - 13 - 14 )
13 27 2014 Clean Bandit (feat. Jess Glynne) - Rather Be 291 ( 23 - 27 - 13 )

It's breakthrough time for Katy! She's always quite famously been the pop star that ROTD doesn't actually treat very kindly, getting lots of her songs falling just outside cutoff points, most of them not making it past the yearly finals, only Hot N Cold and a couple of others representative in the final, where they normally come somewhere towards the bottom. Not this year. This year, Katy has managed to keep one of her songs right until the business end of the final, still a little ways off a top 10 but so very close. I'm pleased for Rob all the Katy fans we definitely have on the site and hopefully this'll open up the way for more Katy successes, I do like an underdog.

Figure 8 provides us with Ellie Goulding's big hope in ROTD now, it's been rising for a while but clearly this was the year for that one Ellie single that was clearly incredibly high quality for all who heard it, but not enough people actually did hear it and so it became a bit of a cult pop classic. It's so much better than some of her big hits, mentioning no names, Love Me Like You Do, that it still seems like a travesty all those years on. I don't care that much about pop music, honest. But sometimes...

Video Games comes in about 30 points ahead of Born To Die, so is still Buzzjack's favourite out of those two, as it dips just one place from last time. It's moved up a level from previous years, where it was hanging around the 40s, now it's hanging around the teens. *something something teens playing video games that isn't at all clever*

Rather Be is a song I've always tipped to win this one day, although its first two years it fell quite a bit short of doing that and I think Rockabye might actually be a more likely eventual winner now. It's much closer this time around though, as it comes in as the highest song from 2014 and 13th overall. Still over 100 points off of winning, but it's a bit better.

Posted by: danG 17th September 2017, 03:53 PM

surprised that Uprising hasn't ever been top 100 before now, I thought it was always a well regarded song but perhaps we got a few more indie voters this year.

great to see Chase & Status climbing lots this year too!

12 46 2012 Swedish House Mafia - Don't You Worry Child 292 ( 26 - 64 - 32 - 46 - 12 )
11 8 2013 CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share 309 ( 131 - 53 - 8 - 11 )

Year update: so this means that in the top 10, there is one of each year except for 2008, 2013 and 2014, and two for 2007, 2011 and 2015. Not as even as we've had it in the past, and that means there are at least two slots free next year.

Don't You Worry Child takes the title of the highest song that contains credited men only. While there are actually men involved on the credits in four of the songs above it, that's the criteria I normally use when announcing this 'award' - I'll also give another pat on the back for gender equality for whichever song that is. It's actually been fairly high in recent years, #4 for Mr Brightside in 2014, #8 for I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor in 2015, Viva La Vida at #18 last year is the only time when I've been running that it's been lower than this. Anyway, Don't You Worry Child has been up and down within the final, but is clearly on the up. For a dance song, I think its strength is that it gets emotional, much more so than many do and it's very easy to attach feelings to it, I have always attached feelings of euphoric joy from university first year myself.

CHVRCHES, meanwhile, gets the somewhat less universal award title of highest track formerly in Buzzjack's Song Contest (to Rob's consternation), it retains that title from last year after stealing it from Paper Planes the year before. It falls out of the top 10 but not far, and given it won the 2013 final, it's vindicated in being the highest 2013 track again in the overall competition. Lovely song, and a great introduction (for me, it was the first CHVRCHES song that I loved), now let's get more CHVRCHES in the Buzzjack mainstream. Saviours of western pop, as I will constantly say until it is recognised by all.

Run Away With Me or Robyn to win. Enjoying these Ellie Goulding, double Lana, Paramore and Muse rises!

Posted by: Iz~ 17th September 2017, 07:35 PM

10 4 2012 Loreen - Euphoria 316 ( 4 - 6 - 3 - 4 - 10 )
9 3 2007 Robyn - With Every Heartbeat 334 ( 33 - 125 - 7 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 7 - 1 - 3 - 9 )

Euphoria does keep its top 10 run just barely but it's still a long way off conquering this competition like it has so many others on this site, although many of those were back in the day when it was new and fresh and absolutely the best thing ever to everyone. It still has a large base, but will that be enough to let it ever recover and win?

For With Every Heartbeat, a double winner, we now have to say goodbye to it as it falls in a mere 9th, which given the rest of its top 10 run, is fairly low, but two wins! Only three other songs in ROTD today have managed even one, and only one other has managed more than one, so With Every Heartbeat goes out having done all it can (aside from beat Bad Romance a couple more times. Or beat its competing Robyn track on its out).

8 59 2011 Rihanna (feat. Drake) - What's My Name 346 ( 36 - 65 - 60 - 23 - 31 - 59 - 8 )
7 182 2015 Ariana Grande - One Last Time 355 ( 182 - 7 )

Rihanna has gone one better than the other Robyn this time around, she's gotten three tracks in the decade's top 10, and that's even after one of hers that was in last year, Disturbia, fell out! One of the ones coming in is What's My Name, which has been more often rather low in the final than towards the top, especially when it used to be 60 tracks in the final, I think that 60th place was it coming last. But things have changed and her feature with Drake comes racing up to get a top 10 placing. It's not absolutely my favourite Rihanna song but not one I really begrudge getting success either.

And then I expect a lot of people might have been tipping this next one to win. Just like when Dancing On My Own won last year, it might have been fitting had One Last Time gone the whole distance due to each song at the time being affected by outside factors (although a shit cover outstripping the accomplishments of the original isn't exactly comparable to being the song directly associated with a current tragedy), but it wasn't quite to be. Still, that's no small climb and increase in its fortunes either, it won the 2015 round comfortably and maybe this has set it up to be one of 2015's big hitters now it's been thrust into the public consciousness so prominently. It's certainly a lovely song and one that does deserve to be up this high, but for winning, it'll have to be another year. There's still another 2015 song and another Ariana song to come.

Posted by: SevenSees 17th September 2017, 07:50 PM

Don't You Worry Child is glorious, i'm all for that gaining some well deserved adoration here <3

Farewell to With Every Heartbeat of course, a great run and given us some great moments (2015 never forget <3)

a rough prediction for the remaining songs, ROTD is always a tough one to call:

1 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
2 Robyn - Dancing On My Own
3 Rihanna (feat. Calvin Harris) - We Found Love
4 Ariana Grande - Into You
5 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me
6 Rihanna (feat. Jay-Z) - Umbrella

Posted by: Iz~ 17th September 2017, 07:52 PM

6 1 2010 Robyn - Dancing On My Own 367 ( 20 - 7 - 10 - 15 - 7 - 1 - 6 )
5 16 2011 Rihanna (feat. Calvin Harris) - We Found Love 377 ( 15 - 5 - 3 - 2 - 16 - 5 )

Fact you've probably already figured out, 50% of the lead artists in this top 10 are called Robyn. Only one of those 5 is in the top 4, as we deal with two more of them now.

Last year's winner falls down to #6, as a certain someone that everyone loves also did after he won a somewhat less important rate, elsewhere on the board. Last year was a fleeting stay at the top then, but I like that, it means more variation and it was so good to get a new winner last year that I think I've found myself liking Dancing On My Own even more over the intervening period, as good a pop song as it initially was.

We Found Love climbs way back into the top 10. I still say that this has a win in it one year, but each time it comes close and doesn't quite it makes you wonder what it's best opening will be. Perhaps 2020 or 2021, once Bad Romance is gone and there's less of a scrum at the top. It's come way back into my affections lately, I think, I did find it a little tiring in its era, but as Rihanna and pop music has moved beyond that sound it sounds really fresh again. Maybe its climb this year is indicative of that.

Posted by: Iz~ 17th September 2017, 07:58 PM

4 11 2007 Rihanna (feat. Jay-Z) - Umbrella 382 ( 5 - 2 - 3 - 7 - 28 - 34 - 12 - 12 - 11 - 4 )

And the final 2007 song we'll ever see in ROTD, Umbrella falls away at #4, leaving a top 3 of Ariana, Carly and Gaga. It's just off its runner up position that it gained in 2009, but it's its first time in the top 10 for five years, so I think we can still call this going out on a high. The famous 10-week #1 that wasn't beaten for runtime until last year, it's clear that never did Umbrella any harm, it just helped it gain more adoration and launched Rihanna's career sky-high. It's the first of her big songs that we have to say goodbye to, SOS and Unfaithful did fairly well for their part but they weren't part of her imperial era. From now on, we'll see huge Rihanna songs leaving this game just as we see them come in, and we'll remember, it all started with you, Umbrella.

3 NE 2016 Ariana Grande - Into You 383 ( 3 )

It's a rare beast of a pop behemoth that enters straight in the top 10 in ROTD these days. It happened with Euphoria and Run Away With Me, as well as the two biggest Adele songs from 21, but that makes it only the fifth time since 2012 that a pop song has come in straight out of the gate into the top 10 on its first year. And Into You has actually entered higher than all of those! Yet it isn't what really fits the profile of one of those. At some points, you couldn't move for the hype around Loreen or Carly Rae, but though Ariana has gone through her own increase in fandom, it hasn't been quite to the same level focused around Into You itself. So that's a little weird that it's now the biggest new entry to ROTD since Bad Romance itself.

But what it is, despite that, is a really solid pop song that racks up the high points from everywhere - enough for it to put down the highest score in the yearly finals and break all the records before that, it's certainly infectious, who could not love that slick sound? I think this is definitely one to watch as we go through the years.

So... I've mentioned them both in that commentary, it's now a duel between Run Away With Me and Bad Romance. One got 400 points, the other, 418. Which is which?

Posted by: danG 17th September 2017, 08:10 PM

Bad Romance pleez. RAWM is good but not on the same level as BR.

The 2017 winner of the Record Of The Decade award is......

CARLY RAE JEPSEN - RUN AWAY WITH ME

2 2 2009 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance 400 ( 1 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 6 - 2 - 2 )
1 5 2015 Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me 418 ( 5 - 1 )

Oh gosh yeah. It was another close run thing for Bad Romance, but this means it's now been 3 years since it won... time to reevaluate the 'it wins all the time why bother doing this' meme perhaps? Or perhaps not, since the minute we let our guard down it'll be back on top, that song is, even though it didn't win, an unstoppable machine with regards to getting ROTD points, coming up on 8 years played and only once has it ever been out of the top 2. As I've made clear, I don't mind it, but because I like variety and unpredictability when dealing with winners, I don't really want it to win. Maybe on its last go, as a farewell. But then, there might be new challengers then. The last three years has shown that there can be songs that can beat Bad Romance, and as this year shows, the song that beats Bad Romance doesn't have to be by Robyn!

Indeed, it's a not Gaga or Robyn winner for the first time in seven years of this competition going, and for what it's worth, it's my favourite winner of the whole lot. There's something so joyful about the instrumental and the cries that Carly goes through on
Run Away With Me, it's all so perfectly put together, her voice sounds incredible, it is a perfect package of a pop song. And best of all, there's the fact it vindicates my predictions in 2012 that Carly Rae would become a pop darling when she only had a 'novelty' track to her name. Okay, maybe that's not best of all, but it's a little tidbit (about how I'm so psychic). I'm so happy with this, and it's time for me to retire from all pop exertions until next year. Ladies & gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to present Buzzjack's favourite track of the decade for this year:

Posted by: cqmerqn 17th September 2017, 08:23 PM

Now Run Away With Me is cute and deserves top 10 but definitely does not deserve first place. Bad Romance deserved it more I'd say. I listen to RAWN quite often but yeah, doesn't deserve first.

Thanks Iz

I am really quite shocked by Uprising's *ahem* Uprising...kink.gif, I wonder what caused it, they haven't released any notable new material this year? ohmy.gif Shocked as it usually just about scrapes through it's yearly round, but definitely not complaining, what a wonderful addition to the top 20. Yesss at Figure 8 and Don't You Worry Child getting similar random rises.

A shame With Every Heartbeat has to go out on a relative low, I will miss it :'( Kinda surprised Into You beat One Last Time, but I rlly like both and can see either being future winners. Run Away With Me is a pretty damn good pop song and it's certainly nice to get a relatively fresh winner in these.

Thanks for another great year of this, Iz!

Posted by: dandy* 17th September 2017, 09:21 PM

Interesting and, for me, unexpected winner! Not a bad song but far from the best of the past decade...

Posted by: Rush 17th September 2017, 10:05 PM

This progressed faster than I was expecting!

Love the high debut for 'Formation' and climb for 'Flesh Without Blood'; I wonder if the latter could become a top 10 contender in future years?

That 200+ spot climb for 'End Credits' is glorious; no regrets for giving it my top points. I want to credit myself for the improvement as I didn't vote last year, but I did vote 2 years ago and it did even worse then heehee.gif

'Figure 8' reaching as high as #15 is also a highlight for me. Both for being a song I massively love, and for the dose of catharsis it provides as a song a fraction as successful as all the vastly inferior songs she's released since.

I'm a bit surprised at 'Rather Be' getting a new peak now, as it feels like it was one of those songs everyone loved back in 2014, but has kind of fallen to the wayside since; it doesn't feel like as much of an enduring classic as it should. But I might be clouded by my own opinion there, as I heard it a few too many times and I'm still waiting for that to recover.

I've always liked 'One Last Time', but it feels really out of place this high up. I'm curious to see how it'll hold once its 2017 resurgence fades. On the other hand, I'm all for 'Into You' smashing in so high! Very well done.

'Run Away With Me' I certainly do like, but it's never made a strong connection with me. But it's hard to say it's undeserved, with how widely beloved it and the album are. Full congratulations to 'Bad Romance' being top 2 once again. And also 'Umbrella' making the most of its final year.

So happy to see Run Away with Me taking it, especially over Bad Romance! I like that, ish, but I've never been enthralled by it the way RAWM gets me biggrin.gif

Very great winner one of the best 2010 pop songs imo cheer.gif

It feels very wrong to have "Into You" in the top three with "One Last Time" sitting just outside it but whatever. Also Rihanna has definitely suffered an overkill effect, "What's My Name?" really shouldn't be anywhere near as high as it is and if it weren't for that, "Umbrella" or "We Found Love" would have a better chance of winning this - I'm still holding out hope that the latter will one day! <3

Quite a shock for me that "Run Away with Me" has won but I am pleased for it (despite giving "Bad Romance" higher points) - I do like variety but I do not like "With Every Heartbeat". Before returning to BJ/voting in this, I probably hadn't heard it since its release and it is really good but not the best song of the decade lol.

THANK YOU for running this as always, a great read! <3

Well done on running it!

Shame about the winner! Utter shit! But other than that a good top 20

Thrilled that End Credits made it so high - one of my favourite songs of all time. Also thrilled that Little Talks retained a place in the top 20 even if it couldn't stay top 10.

Surprised One Last Time was behind Into You as it sounds like so much more of a hit to me but oh well.

Thank you Iz for running this, the time and effort is hugely appreciated and it is always one of my favourite threads.

good to have a different winner but RAWM is highly overrated on this forum imo. Hope Rihanna can do it one of these days with We Found Love (or anything). yay for triple RiRi in the top 10 though, literally when will your faves ever?

I never would have thought 5 years ago I'd be cheering a Carly Rae Jepsen song to the top but Run Away With Me is just THAT song (and of course the album is sheer aural joy). Delighted! wub.gif
