BuzzJack Music Forum _ 20th Century Retro _ Classic dance singles

Hi all - I've been building up my collection of dance singles and I'm looking for inspiration as to what to get next... ideas welcomed from all so tell us about your absolute favourites from years gone by.

Nothing too old though if you don't mind, the earliest I have at the moment is the Theme From S'Express and I don't particularly want to go any further back than that.

Here's what I've included within my collection so far - I've always been really interested in electronic music and I'm hoping to build it up to be a good representation of dance music over the years, I've probably focussed a lot on trance so far because of me being about 18 during that era - I feel like I could do with expanding other genres of dance now. Possibly even expanding into some earlier tracks that helped form dance music as we know it today. Similarly I'm light on tracks post 2000ish so I wouldn't mind recommendations from later eras also (despite the name of this forum!)

I'm steering away from indie-dance like Prodigy and Chemical Brothers at the moment simply because I have most of their albums already - although I may look to add a couple from those types of acts for the sake of completeness - plus they're very expensive usually which puts me off!!!

I would have to go with my holy 1995 trilogy:

Snap feat. Summer - The First, The Last, Eternity ('Til The End)

Grace - It's Not Over Yet

Jam & Spoon - Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music)

These all take me back to the hot sunny summer of 1995 biggrin.gif

This is a GREAT shout. Plus it made me look up the vinyl, which was ridiculously priced so I passed... which prompted me to search for a compilation with it on and I stumbled across this:

https://xlrecordings.com/buy/variousartists-paycloseattention

Which has the most amazing tracklist so I've bought it for not much more than the single would have set me back, WHAT A LABEL wub.gif

Nothing too old?

Surely you could allow “Promised Land” by Joe Smooth ! I still listen to this absolute classic at least once a month, never fails to make me feel in a better mood instantly.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Feb 26 2021, 12:41 AM

You also need:

Rickie Lee Jones!

Posted by: dandy* Feb 26 2021, 08:39 AM

Promised land is a nice one, not sure I’ve heard that before but I like!

Out of the others listed by you kind folk, I’m most tempted to try to source N-Joi, Grace, Xpansions, Olive, The Shamen and Bassomatic

The Style Council did a hit cover of this song, not as dancey but not a bad version

You sure you didn't hear it when it was entered into BJSC 2 years ago? tongue.gif

Posted by: dandy* Feb 26 2021, 03:59 PM

Not sure!!! It clearly didn’t leave a lasting impression if I did biggrin.gif

(just checked and I gave it nil points in the semi and final... which in itself is quite unusual for me as I usually point cumulonimbia)

: (

It's one of my favourite dance tracks - ok, not that well known but it was one of the first pioneering tracks of the Chicago house scene.

Posted by: Coldman Feb 26 2021, 08:56 PM

OK I will pick some of the more forgotten dance hits which I like which you can add to your list of classic dance singles if you want:

Here's the 'other' Felix hit which is forgotten compared to Don't You Want Me. The instrumental is a bit like Tomcraft - Loneliness in style but 11 years earlier.

This is often forgotten compared to Flaming June but it is a great early trance tune

Discovered this quite recently, it's certainly between the 90s eurodance and the emerging trance sound in style

The following the Covid-restrictions anthem!

This cover of the Fugees song is a bit of a tune and made the top 10 but the follow up, a cover of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody in a similar style of dance doesn't work quite as well imo.

I love the atmospheric background synths in this 2002 top 40 hit. This is the full dance mix version.

One of my trance favourites from 2003

I think I may have to reply to this in installments biggrin.gif

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 27 2021, 10:54 AM

For trance, I'd add my favourite song/remix ever, plus these other gems:

Also, this great trio of house hits from 1999:

And Rich, Cassius is an excellent choice. And I can’t believe I forgot Set You Free, although I’m afraid it’ll be the earlier version for me.

No objections there! Even if the remix didn’t exist the original would still easily be in my all-time top three wub.gif

Posted by: Colm Feb 27 2021, 02:25 PM

Are you building up a vinyl collection?

Also, if you're including Praise - Only You as dance you're casting your net very wide. unsure.gif This brings in a lot more sub-genres than I had originally included in my head.

I'm working on a list - some will be slightly smaller hits that came early in genres or early in the careers of bands that became huge. Some will be personal favourites that haven't been mentioned yet. I'll mark them accordingly.

The following stuff is purely to prompt you. I'm not declaring that they are all essential dance choons music.gif

Some rave stuff....

I concur that the Rave album that Colm put together is excellent - I've sent to a few my friends (with Colm's permission) who also enjoy that type of music and it all got the thumbs up. Now looking forward to his next compilation House Explosion (1987-1989). wub.gif

Thanks for those huge lists of inspiration Colm! I am indeed building up a dance vinyl collection - not too much like Praise tbh but I stumbled across it cheap and couldn't resist! I've decided I'd like to own a collection of singles that have some sort of importance and, as dance music is rarely found in album form, I thought dance was the way forward - plus it's probably the genre that has moved the most during my lifetime so a lot of the tracks hold very specific memories for me too - it's basically a lockdown project to keep me sane!!!

I've trimmed the list from your dance #1s list to these that I'll aim to get at some point:

1990-03-31 Snap! - The Power (5 weeks)
1990-06-16 Chad Jackson - Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked) (1 Week)
1991-01-13 C+C Music Factory ft. Freedom Williams - Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) (1 week)
1991-04-07 N-Joi - Anthem (2 weeks)
1991-05-19 Crystal Waters - Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) (4 weeks)
1991-07-28 The Shamen - Move Any Mountain (Progen ’91) (4 weeks)
1991-08-25 The Prodigy - Charly (3 weeks)
1991-11-24 Altern-8 - Activ-8 (Come with Me) (1 week)
1992-02-23 Opus III - It’s A Fine Day (2 weeks)
1992-04-12 Altern 8 - E-Vapor-8 (1 week)
1992-07-19 Snap! - Rhythm is a Dancer (8 weeks)
1992-09-03 The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode (5 weeks)
1993-06-06 Haddaway - What Is Love? (8 week)
1993-08-01 Urban Cookie Collective - The Key: The Secret (3 weeks)
17-04-1994 Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing) (5 Weeks)
13-11-1994 The Real McCoy - Another Night (1 Week)
1995-04-30 Bobby Brown - Two Can Play That Game (K-Klass Mix) (1 Week)
1997-05-11 Olive - You’re Not Alone (3 Weeks)
1997-07-13 Gala - Freed From Desire (5 Weeks)
1997-11-23 Prodigy* - Smack My Bitch Up (1 Week)
1999-04-25 Fatboy Slim - Right Here, Right Now (2 Weeks)
1999-07-25 DJ Jurgen presents Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone (5 Weeks)
1999-11-21 Wamdue Project - King Of My Castle (2 Weeks)

Plus these from your final list too:

Yazz & The Plastic Population - The Only Way Is Up
Inner City - Good Life
Bomb The Bass - Beat Dis
M.A.R.R.S - Pump Up the Volume
Technotronic - Pump Up the Jam
Robin S.– Show Me Love
Lil Louis - French Kiss

Glad I could help.

I'm building up my 12" collection of synth pop, rave, trance and general dance. I only purchase if I see them in a charity shop or record fare. I like the buzz I get from that rather than getting them off the net.

Do you have a list of what you have? I love a good list.

That's a great list of choices

Are you interested in anything from the 00s list I posted, the first three years especially 2000- 2003 would be still in the realm of classic dance I think. smile.gif

Colm's Now album has some fab dance choons: Rozalla, Utah Saints, Baby D, KLF, U96, Prodigy* (though I'd go obvious with Firestarter), RAF, Source especially....

(* which gives me an opportunity for another anecdote repeat - a few years back I was clubbing at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern Duckies on Sat nights and they put on Smack My Bitch Up just as an elderly gentleman (it's a very mixed crowd of ages, but not the very young) with a walking cane in one hand and a pint in the other managed to squeeze past me and gyrating others to find the only empty spot by the steps he could stand and enjoy. "Legend" I thought, not letting disability and age stop him going out! laugh.gif )

We actually had a debate on the 00s dance forum before declaring With Every Heartbeat as dance because it obviously is very synthpop too. It being thread contributor Lenny/Midge's favourite song ever played a bit of a role in us allowing it to be dance #1 on the thread!

Posted by: dandy* Feb 28 2021, 08:29 PM

It definitely was classed a dance single at the time, albeit a very synth pop styled one and obviously Robyn wouldn't really be dance nowadays - I think Kleerup had generally focused solely on dance music though.

haha, brilliant!

I do love “Smack My Bitch Up”, particularly the video although I never saw it at the time for obvious reasons. I think YouTube still has it banned anyway, but personally I think it is a brilliant video because of the way that it really gets you thinking about gender stereotypes, and your own unconscious biases. Keith Flint's death really cut me up, their music really did soundtrack much of my life growing up. I remember when someone brought in “Breathe” to play in schoool on non-uniform day and being completely blown away. I hope I'm like that guy when I get older, with my enthusiasm for big breakbeats undimmed.

Oooooo you have As The Rush Comes! I want that but it's always so expensive and I haven't quite convinced myself I should spend that much yet.

Posted by: Colm Mar 2 2021, 02:35 PM

Only 1 of that whole list was purchased off the internet - True Faith. Everything else I found in second hand music shops (I got Killer in an Oxfam), at record fairs or as gifts from a mate.

I love the buzz of finding something on my 'to buy' list in a shop. heart.gif

Posted by: Doctor Blind Mar 2 2021, 04:48 PM

That's an amazing collection Colm, I'm incredibly jealous! I agree that half the fun of collecting these (now obscure) records is the challenge of the hunt to try and find them. “As the Rush Comes” was an early Doctor Blind #1 from Jan 2004 - knocked off by Franz Ferdinand (“Take Me Out”).. if nothing else I was eclectic!

This morning I had 6Music on in the office at work and they played “In Yer Face”, “Playing With Knives” and “Dominator” back-to-back.

It was very distracting!!

The break down in As the Rush Comes (Gabriel & Dresden Sweeping Strings Remix) is one of my favourites in all of the trance genre. I was surprised to find out they were American.

I have Now Trance in the pipeline too. I can't decide if I want to do radio versions or club mixes.

I've got a local record shop but it very rarely has anything in it that I'd want to buy - certainly not much in terms of electronic music. It's the type of shop where they still get obsessed with talking about the latest Paul McCartney release or the fact they've found a NM copy of a Genesis album. sad.gif

I've never been to a record fair - I should google for local ones when we're allowed to actually be in the same room as other people again! Part of my problem is that I'm exceptionally picky about what I buy, online I only ever buy mint or near mint because I hate crackles on records and I don't like used looking sleeves - a fact that will probably come as a surprise to precisely nobody.

Posted by: Colm Mar 2 2021, 06:20 PM

I'm not that picky. My copy of Hey Jupiter/Professional Widow is in tatters. I prob only spent €1 on it.

I would say half my stuff comes from the record fair that we have here, a few times a year. It is a UK one so it's most likely one that travels around the UK too before coming to Dublin. I've bled them dry of all the 80s stuff that I want. They didn't seem to be replenishing very much theas few times I went. There's a really good shop in Belfast too. That's where I got double pack of the two House Arrest 12"s.
I've managed to find all the Now's on vinyl from 10 to 19. wub.gif

Posted by: dandy* Mar 2 2021, 07:02 PM

I love going into record stores, always have. As a kid I'd spend an hour in the local independent one every Monday scouring the racks to see what I wanted to spend my money on.

I have to limit myself these days as I end up buying things that I don't even want that much just because they are there. In some ways online buying makes me more focussed - although I totally get what you mean about stumbling across something you've wanted for ages.

I find the knack online is to find shops that don't specialise in the type of music you're looking for. I picked up Tori's Professional Widow for £10 in mint condition - yep it's quite a lot but I've seen it selling for waaayyyy more than that so it's almost an investment, albeit one I will never sell laugh.gif

Reflect ft Delline Bass - Need To Feel Loved is another good dance song with a similar sort of vibe to it from the mid 00s.

I'm way too late to provide any inclusions that won't already be here but just wanted to say that I loved reading through this topic wub.gif

I built on my very small dance singles collection a bit just before lockdown hit! My biggest local independent record store is great for dance, the owner was really helpful and even ordered in Basement Jaxx - 'The Singles' for me after he could see me buying a couple of their singles in there *.* must resist the urge to buy job lots of dance singles now laugh.gif I think I'll just stick to buying a couple whenever I visit the independent stores as I go down enough vinyl rabbit holes online as it is.

For now I just have:

Artful Dodger - Movin' Too Fast (feat. Romina Johnson)
Basement Jaxx - Jump n' Shout
Basement Jaxx - Oh My Gosh
Chocolate Puma - I Wanna Be U
Fatboy Slim - Right Here, Right Now (yellow vinyl + a CamelPhat remix one too)
Jean Jacques Smoothie - 2 People
Meck - Thunder In My Heart Again (feat. Leo Sayer)
Paul Hardcastle - 19
The Prodigy - Out of Space
Room 5 - Make Luv (feat. Oliver Cheatham)

Quite 2000s heavy right now. Definitely want to build on 90s in the future.

Also sharing the 'As The Rush Comes' love... wub.gif

The Chocolate Puma one is a great choice Jade, I knew it when I was a child in the form of Follow The Leader by Nigel and Marvin, a childrens party fave back then.

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 08:46 AM

Annoyingly there are quite a few comparatively recent inclusions I’d like but simply can’t get. Kiesza’s Hideaway for example doesn’t ever appear to have had a 12” release.

Posted by: Jade Mar 3 2021, 09:47 AM

I evidently have 0 self control so I ended up getting a couple of essentials on eBay that were quite cheap (Crescendo - Are You Out There + Layo & Bushwacka - Love Story) kink.gif watching some 90s + 00s stuff - mostly from the Positiva label - especially hoping to get a couple that aren't on Spotify. Then I must stop for now... laugh.gif

Jade... it's a very slippery slope as I've found out this year sad.gif

ALTHOUGH I must say that Are You Out There sounds phenomenally good on wax

Posted by: Jade Mar 3 2021, 10:14 AM

laugh.gif yes I can see this spiraling quite easily - I'll keep an eye on the rest of what I'm watching on eBay but vow to not add anything else for real this time and leave the rest of the experience with independent stores.

I do plan to complete my Now collection eventually (so up to 35 on vinyl) so that should have me covered with a lot of early 90s anyway at least!

So excited to hear that on vinyl, what a song wub.gif

ok, so here's a thing.

While going through my 12" to make my list I disregarded a few things. Mainly because I didn't think they suited this thread.

And now, as part of this conversation I see Jade mention Crescendo - Are You Out There and then Dandy* comment on it. This arose my curiosity so I googled it. It turns out that it was one of the ones I ignored. laugh.gif A mate gave it to me and I assumed it was rubbish so I never listened to it, or knew what it was.

I guess I should add the other ones I ignored

Candyflip - Strawberry Fields Forever
Chemicals Bothers - Galvanize (which I loath - it was a gift)
Crowded House - Fingers of Love [numbered 10"]
Deep Forrest - Sweet Lullaby
Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson - I Know Him So Well (purchased for Power Ballad Night)
Fleetwood Mac - Big Love
House of Love - Shine On
Lady Gaga - Just Dance [mixes]
Lifelike - So Electric
London Beat - I've Been Thinking About You
Madonna/Daft Punk - mash up (can't remember which songs) [white label]
Manic Street Preachers - A Design for Life [Record Store Day] x 2
Orbital - Funny Break gift
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
Skrillex - Bangarang gift
T99 - Anasthasia gift
Tori Amos - China
Underworld - Jumbo gift
UNKLE feat. Ian Brown - Be There

which ones do you have at the moment? On top of my Now list to get on vinyl are Now 20 & Now 17 which are always expensive when I see it online. I have Now 1, 3, 9, 10 to 16, 18 and 19. None of them cost me more than €5.

I've just been told to listen to Symphonic Variation which I am doing. It's ok.

Posted by: dandy* Mar 3 2021, 12:55 PM

I think I personally prefer the original, the bass is better on it and it doesn't have the vocals.

Posted by: Colm Mar 3 2021, 12:56 PM

The bass is very strong in the original.

Now 1 to 22 so far! I got the first 10 to start off my collection back in 2014, one randomly at a carboot sale and picked the rest of it back up a couple of years ago - going quite slowly via eBay. Dreading the cost of the 30s laugh.gif

Well done. I dont think I will bother with any of them after 20.

I'm now tempted to extend this topic further back in time... what do people think are the essential electronic tracks of the 80s and earlier that helped to shape electronic music?

So far I've probably gone with some obvious ones but I have:

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Two Tribes
Ultravox - Vienna
Donna Summer - I Feel Love
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Salt n Pepa - Push It
Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Kraftwerk are an obvious omission but haven't settled on which to get yet.

Posted by: coi Mar 3 2021, 04:36 PM

If we're going really far back, Oxygene by Jean-Michel Jarre surely? (And obviously Kraftwerk are an essential in that category!)

Here are some of my personal favourites:

The Tornados - Telstar - not by any means dance but worth mentioning as the first big electronic hit in 1962!

Hot Butter - Popcorn from 1972

Underpass by John Foxx from 1980

Shannon - Give Me Tonight (yes Let The Music Play is better known and its good but I prefer Give Me Tonight) - both songs are predecessors to the acid house sound from 1984

Herbie Hancock - Rockit (and Autodrive) 1983 and Art Of Noise - Close To The Edit 1984 - early experimental sampling based tunes Herbie Hancock Autodrive in particular sounds quite house-esque

Yazoo - Don't Go, Talk Talk - Today, Blancmange - Living On The Ceiling, Classix Nouveaux - Is It A Dream, and Patrick Cowley ft. Sylvester - Do You Wanna Funk all from 1982. The Blancmange song is less electronic based perhaps but certainly has a dance beat to it I think.

Trans X - Living On Video 1982 - that instrumental almost sounds like a precursor to eurodance in the 90'S I think.

Break Machine - Street Dance from 1984 - early idea of instrumental 'drop' in place of chorus.

Propaganda - Dr Mabuse from 1984

Freeez - IOU and Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again from 1983, the latter song almost like a precursor to Clean Bandit's music style I think.

Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy, Why , Hit That Perfect Beat - 1984-5 - the latter song very energetic sounding for the time!

Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Right Round from 1985

Sharpe and Numan - Change Your Mind - 1985 - instrumental sounds almost like 2010s deep house I think!

Also Depeche Mode particularly their industrial music era from 1983 to about 1985

London Beat - I've Been Thinking About You

I guess Londonbeat Thinking About You is house influenced, great song anyway, the vocal in it reminds me of the Fine Young Cannibals in style.

Yes I guessed that with Elaine Paige and Manic Street Preachers on the list smile.gif Incidentally A Design For Life is one of the first songs I ever liked, it was on the music channels loads when I was a child in the late 90s.

Is Skrillex - Bangarang then your most recent dance single in terms of original release date?

Posted by: Colm Mar 4 2021, 07:55 AM

I suppose. My brother gave it to me as a Christmas present a few years ago.

haha, brilliant!

Yes me too, I want to go clubbing when I'm 100 laugh.gif I was at Gran Canaria airport when I got the news about Keith Flint, which was a bit of a jolt. For me it was Firestarter, the first time I heard that one it was a total "woah!" moment and I started raving about it at work to my friends and colleagues in the Parks department (the ones into music at any rate smile.gif ) - I once started writing a sitcom about working for the Council Parks & Recreation department in the 90's, but have left it too late to bother finishing now following Chris Pratt & co laugh.gif

Total classics (plus Push It which is fun but not in the same early classic mode).

The Model is the best, but Autobahn was a pioneer.

My 12 inches are few and far between when it comes to remixes, tended not to buy them on the whole unless they were hits compilations or had bonus tracks or a remix I couldnt otherwise get (like the US hit version of Mony Mony for Billy Idol).

But I have these ones vaguely dance-ish:

Pet Shop Boys Inner Sanctum
Mory Kante Banquero
Enigma Mea Culpa
Paula Abdul Knocked Out
Dusty Springfield Reputation
Malcolm McLaren House Of The Blue Danube
Alexander O Neal Hearsay

Mostly 80's stuff though, I'd more or less switched to CD by the 90's as it took up less room biggrin.gif

Oh I never know what is getting vetoed that's why I get vetoes here and there for my entries laugh.gif It peaked at 11 and is not that far off 20 years old, and I have my doubts it's that widely-known by anyone who wasnt into the charts or dance at the time. It took 4 years because I am lazy and I left it alone for long periods. laugh.gif

I make these, not so that I can have the tunes, but for a few other reasons. So that I can create a Now that never existed, sequenced in a way I think that would suit an official edition and so that I can get better at graphic design trying to replicate the official releases.

I have Now Trance [Club mixes], Now Synthpop [Extended] and Now Dance Explosion (which focuses on dance music from 1987 to 1989) in the works. Check back in 2023 biggrin.gif

Although it's kinda scary how similar our taste in music is - Layo & Bushwacka! was a #1 for me, but in 2003 because I'm a chart whore and missed it the first time around. I remember it soundtracking lots of Celebrity Fit Club which I was strangely obsessed with at the time.

Chic - Good Times
Blondie - Heart of Glass
Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric
Talk Talk - It's My Life
Tears For Fears - Pale Shelter
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
Kraftwerk - Computer Love / The Model
Visage - Fade To Grey
Erasure - A Little Respect
Desireless - Voyage Voyage
Yazoo - Don't Go / Situation
Bronski Beat - Small-town Boy
Propaganda - The Nine Lives of Dr Mabuse
Prince - 1999 / Little Red Corvette

Ah, glad you enjoyed it. The video had a dog going to the moon I think - which struck a chord with me because I had a book about Laika (first dog in space) when I was growing up.

Incidentally if you don't know Lange (Lan-gee, or is it Lahnge?) “Drifting Away” is another early 2000s BANGAH. Particularly the Lange's Sunset Dub on the CD Single!

For early 80s songs it's maybe stretching the definition of dance a bit but I just remembered Joe Jackson Steppin' Out, one of the ultimate early 80s high tempo synthpop tunes.
