Can't believe how long ago that was though, I remember regularly being in awe of the music video coming on TV. Also, when they had those music player toys at McDonalds featuring the song. *.*

'Love Machine' was released 12 years ago on this date!

Also, 'Something Kinda Ooooh' received its radio premiere on 12th September 2006. I can't believe it's now 10 years old! One of my favourite songs ever!

Wooow at both of those! I remember Love Machine's release so clearly, I bought CD1 in Tesco (! oh the days of Tesco stocking CD singles) and CD2 in Woolworths I believe! Amazing times.

I don't really remember much about Something Kinda Ooooh's release other than being obsessed with the song of course, I loved all the quirky lyrics in it for sure.

At the time, it had been just over three years since they'd last been active (when they were Coldplay's support act at Wembley Stadium in September 2009).

Today also marks 9 years since "The Promise" was released in the UK, the same day as their 'X Factor' performance of the song:



I still love this song much, I've been listening to it a lot more recently - the trinity of singles from 'Out of Control' were probably their best ever so while I'm sad that "The Loving Kind" and "Untouchable" underperformed, I am still so proud that they achieved such a big hit so late into their career - and an overdue #1 studio album!

That was an amazing time to be a fan - fabulous for them to achieve an original song #1 hit after so long, and a #1 studio album too. It really felt like they'd climbed to a new level of success, which was remarkable after 6 years; I'll always find it a shame they decided to take a hiatus after this.

I really think had they done one more studio album after 'Out Of Control' but before the hiatus, they'd have cemented themselves as the biggest pop act in the country at the time and set themselves up better for the 'Ten' era. Just as the general public was really getting in to them they threw it all away and allowed Cheryl to swoop in and claim the momentum they'd set up. I think a new Girls Aloud song in October 2009 would've easily sold similarly to 'Fight For This Love'.

Today is 12 years since the release of the critically acclaimed pop masterpiece that is 'Biology'. Released on Monday 14th November 2005, initial midweek figures suggested that it'd land outside the Top 5, at #6 - but thankfully by the day of the chart announcement, it had climbed to an official peak of #4! This made it their 9th Top 5 single. As of July 2017 it had exceeded 190,000 sales across physicals, downloads and streaming - making it their 9th best selling hit.



What an incredible and unique song.



On a personal note, two days before the release of Biology, I saw Girls Aloud for the very first time! It was at the Christmas Lights concert in Birmingham. Sadly Sarah wasn't there due to being ill, but I still remember how exciting it was to see them up close (me and my friends were at the barrier *.* ).


(Lmao I remember that my camera's memory card was only 64MB, so I couldn't film very much *_* )

Echoing Joseph here! "Biology" is the song that a lot of people who aren't huge fans of Girls Aloud remember outside of "Sound of the Underground"/"The Promise". Criminal that it only peaked at #4 although I think a lot of momentum was lost from "Long Hot Summer" and then sweeping it to the side so quickly for "See the Day" - possibly their worst ever single - is still such a WTF moment. I actually think 'Chemistry' is probably their second best album after 'Tangled Up' but gets overlooked a lot because it's their only album to miss the top ten.

I'll Stand By You was released 13 years ago today (Monday 15th November 2004)! Their cover of The Pretenders' 1994 hit was chosen to be that year's Children In Need single, and it went straight in at #1 in the UK singles chart - staying there for two weeks, holding off Destiny's Child's Lose My Breath.





I'll Stand By You was recently revealed to have sold 235,000 copies (not including streams), and as of October 2012 it was their 6th best selling single.

Jump was released 14 years ago this week (Monday 17th November 2003)! It's included on the re-release of their debut album 'Sound of the Underground', and also features on their second offering 'What Will the Neighbours Say?' The cover of The Pointers Sisters' 80s classic was included on the soundtrack of the movie Love Actually (which explains the rather horrid default picture the video has on YouTube :') ).





It sold just under 60,000 copies in its first week (a very respectable first week by 2003 standards), but unfortunately Girls Aloud were runners up in the chart to Westlife, who scored their 12th #1 hit with their own cover version release, 'Mandy'. However, 'Jump' ended up achieving a longer stay in the charts, and also outsold it! As of October 2013, 'Jump' had sold 250,000 copies, whereas 'Mandy' only surpassed 200,000 sales in July 2014.

Ten was released 5 years ago today!



It peaked at #9 in the UK charts, and as of October 2013 it had sold 167,290 copies. I'd be interested to know how much it's sold over the past 4 years - I wonder if it's exceeded 200k?

It still upsets me how much their comeback underperformed They had all the hype right with the countdown and press conference but due to Kimberley's Strictly schedule/general laziness they didn't promote "Something New" at all until the Children in Need night - and then they moved straight on to the disaster that is "Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me" - amongst their worst songs ever.

For overall sales, will streams of the individual tracks go towards 'Ten' or the albums that they were originally released on?

Nadine has posted on social media that today marks 14 years since the release of 'What Will the Neighbours Say?'. It's only actually been 13 years but I think this album was definitely the point that the girls moved from reality TV successes to a genuinely successful pop group. "The Show" and "Love Machine" remain two of their greatest singles and "Graffiti My Soul" is obviously one of (if not THE) most popular album tracks from them.

Personally I find the album a bit too ballad heavy, particularly towards the end although the two singles I mentioned plus "Big Brother" and "Real Life" are amongst their best, for me.

ALSO "Jump" is their best cover but I still find it odd how it appeared on this after it was tacked on to the re-release of 'Sound of the Underground'.

I know I write this sort of thing every time, but I really can't believe it was 13 years ago. Such a great era for them, and like you say Theo, I think they'd well and truly shaken off the "reality winners" tag by this point.

It'd actually slipped my mind that this is certified double platinum! A pity it doesn't have a Top 5 peak to boot, but with this album & Chemistry they were pretty brave to release so deep into Q4.

Madness that it's been 15 years already! I'd just started Year 7 and now I've been left school for 10 years! They were so lucky to land 'Sound Of The Underground', if it hadn't been for that song I doubt they'd have lasted the year.

I notice Kimberley has posted about it on Instagram, tagging the other 4 girls in a picture of just her, Cheryl and Nicola. It's nice of her to acknowledge the anniversary but it's such a shame she couldn't just post an old picture of all 5 of them together, seems very inappropriate.

Cheryl and Nicola posted exactly the same picture and tagged Sarah and Nadine too - I think Cheryl's stung the most as she described finding two friends for life.

I don't actually think I watched Popstars and only became aware of their reality TV past when Cheryl became a judge on X Factor! Still, it seems crazy that they formed so long ago and managed such sustained success <3

I'm scrolling through my Facebook feed and there's posts from Now Music and Radio One celebrating 15 years of Girls Aloud which is really great to see!

Girls Aloud have existed pretty much all my life, like the moment I was capable of forming memories is when they started. I'm still able to relive that nostalgia when I watch the videos to the likes of 'Sound of the Underground', 'Jump', 'Love Machine' and 'Something Kinda Ooh' and I hope that never goes away. I'm a bit 👀 at Chimola posting a picture of themselves in association with this anniversary (and also at Cheryl's message). Would it have hurt them to use a throwback pic of the 5 of them together? I personally don't think this was the occasion to further emphasise this bond and thus the distance between them and Sarah/Nadine. Fair enough that those three are great friends, and it stems from Girls Aloud... but this should be a day of celebrating what the five of them achieved, not just three.

At least Nicola's message was nicer/more inclusive, even if it was attached to that Chimola pic. Cheryl's just seems passive aggressive to gush about the Nicola/Kimberley, while tagging Nadine and Sarah. 👀

Anyway can't believe it's 15 years I watched to see Geri's debut as a judge but ended up following Girls Aloud's career. They had a great run of albums that I still enjoy. Gonna have a listen to my fave Chemistry now.

It's been 12 years since the release of Girls Aloud's third studio album Chemistry (5th December 2005)! It contains the singles Long Hot Summer, Biology, See the Day and Whole Lotta History, all of which were UK Top 10 hits.



It was released on standard and deluxe CD formats, with the deluxe including a bonus disc of Christmas songs (covers and originals)!

Despite Chemistry selling strongly in its first week (81,962 copies), it entered and peaked at the frustrating position of #11! I still remember checking the official charts site on chart day. Back then, each page only displayed 10 albums - so scrolling down to #10 and seeing Girls Aloud hadn't made it was a moment! Then clicking onto page 2 and seeing them at the top of the page at #11. Its midweek positions were #6 on Tuesday, #6 on Wednesday and #7 on Thursday.

It was just 232 copies short of making it to #10, a position held by The Pussycat Dolls - PCD in that week (82,193 sales). Meanwhile Sugababes - Taller in More Ways placed at #6 with 91,035 copies sold. I recall that both PCD & Taller in More Ways had their prices reduced to £7.99 in that week, while Chemistry's deluxe retailed at a rather obscenely priced £16.99! It's worth noting that back in those days, new releases came out on Monday and the chart was revealed on Sunday - just six days of sales, whereas albums already on sale had 7 days. With such a small difference in sales, this undoubtedly tipped things in PCD's favour.

Chemistry went on to sell approximately 71,000 in week 2 (#20), just short of 100,000 in week 3 (#17) and 14,000 in week 4 (#29) to end up as the 74th best selling album of 2005, with 266,000 sales. It was certified platinum, and by March 2013 it had sold 390,000 copies in total.

It's also been 14 years since the re-release of Sound of the Underground (1st December 2003)!



This version received brand new artwork and a rejigged track listing, including the new single Jump, a new track You Freak Me Out, a remixed version of Some Kind of Miracle and the B Side Girls on Film. This attracted 26,000 sales in the first week of December, which believe it or not was only enough for the album to re-enter at a rather dismal sounding #42! Prior to re-release, Sound of the Underground had sold just 143,000 copies, which was regarded as disappointing. Despite it being home to three Top 3 singles, the group feared they might be dropped:

Cheryl: "It didn't sell as well as everyone hoped, we thought, what happens now? We didn't know if we were going to get dropped and I had the guilt of thinking - is it because of me the album's not done well, because of the court case?"
Kimberley: We'd done well but the industry was on a decline and we hadn't sold that many albums so it was touch and go whether we'd even get another one. It wasn't really spoken about but there was a chance [the label would] consider dropping us, which was horrible. None of us let ourselves believe it because I think we all knew we had a lot more to give."

Thankfully the success of Jump (a #2 hit) & album sales swelling to 245,000 by the year's end was evidently enough to appease Polydor. Phew! By March 2013 the album had sold 368,000 copies.

... and 9 years since the Collectors Edition of Out of Control was released! (8th December 2008)



This version came out during Out of Control's 6th week of availability. The hardback book format included a booklet of pictures & lyrics, plus a bonus disc containing a 30 minute "Making of the Album" discussion with Girls Aloud. The album climbed to #8 and sold 77,384 copies, taking its total sales up to that point to 368,807 copies. As a matter of interest, here are the first 10 weeks of sales for Out of Control:

Theme to St. Trinian's managed to peak in the UK singles chart at #51, and was on course to become a Top 40 hit before Polydor decided to pull it from iTunes.

It's been 12 years since the release of See the Day (Monday 19th December 2005) and 11 years since I Think We're Alone Now (Monday 18th December 2006)! Both were released in Christmas chart week. See the Day entered and peaked at #9, which at the time was their lowest charting single. I Think We're Alone Now fared better, managing #4 Both songs are cover versions - See the Day was originally by Dee C Lee, while I Think We're Alone Now is by Tommy James and the Shondells (although Girls Aloud's version was certainly inspired by Tiffany's re-popularised version). See the Day sold 70,000 copies as of 2010, while I Think We're Alone Now had sold over 90,000 as of 2012.

The Loving Kind had it's CD single release 9 years ago tomorrow! (12th January 2009) The song became the group's 20th consecutive top 10 single, although only just, peaking at #10 the week of the CD release. All of it's two TV promo performances came before Christmas, including the all time iconic perf on GMTV *_*

"Fight for this Love" premiered 9 years ago today! I still absolutely adore this song, I overplayed it way too much on the day of release but it still holds up as a pop classic to me. I'd rank it second amongst Cheryl's singles (and any GA solo single, tbh) behind "Call My Name".

Love Machine entered and peaked at #2 in the official UK singles chart, spending two weeks at that position. It was the 49th best seller of 2004 (selling 94,000 copies). As of June 2018 its sales stood at just under 293,000.

Nicola released her debut solo album 'Cinderella's Eyes' seven years ago today



I was in my final year of uni at the time and played this album to death when it came out, it's still easily my most favourite album of all the solo Aloud releases, it's got such depth and vibrancy to it. You can tell how passionate Nicola was about it and how confident she sounded on the album. Even now when I listen to it, I still hear new things on it every time.

My favourites on the album are 'I', 'Sticks & Stones', 'Take A Bite' (particularly because she references the 'Rude ginger bitch' skirt saga of 2003) and 'Say It Out Loud'. I'd love her to do another album one day but I get the impression she's probably happier writing and producing for other artists now.

Tomorrow will be exactly four years since 'Only Human' was released and "I Don't Care" reached #1 in the UK - giving Cheryl the record for most #1s for a solo British female, which she held for 3 years and 5 months.



I still love the song but I don't go back to it as much as the '3 Words' singles and "Call My Name". I'd rank it third behind the latter and "Fight for this Love" amongst her #1s though.

I can't believe it's been four years since she last released music though 😩 I am SO ready for "Love Made Me Do It"!

I don't know if i really even like looking back now. That Ten reunion ended in such a bitter way i was angry, they completely pulled the wool over my eyes i really did think they were very good friends and they wern't ever gonna slag each other with sly diggs and tactics following the band, so i'm disappointed in them and it makes the whole thing really unauthentic and fake now in my eyes.

Looking at the Spice Girls, four girls genuinely who love and care for each other. I don't think Girls Aloud could ever be genuinely that close again. With three members practically joined at the hip and the other two ah-whol a reunion doesn't even have the same buzz for me.

Don't rush back girls, sort out your issues then you can have my £ for TWENTY.

Here's another moment... Love Machine was released 16 years ago today! Quite literally half of my life ago (I'm 32) While it's not one of my ultimate favourites, I have a lot of enjoyment for it. The dance moves and the colourful dresses are very memorable aspects of Girls Aloud's career!

Love Machine on picture disc is the first vinyl I ever bought. I didn't actually know what a picture disc is when the formats were announced. The start of what eventually became a bit of a vinyl obsession. *.*

As far as I can remember, Nadine had initially signed a deal with Geffen in 2009 or maybe early 2010, but for some reason it didn't work out. I seem to remember the reason given was that Nadine wanted more artistic freedom by having her own label. I guess the management she had at the time considered that a Tesco exclusive deal would be lucrative for her, without anticipating that it would be restrictive and come across as a bit of a joke It was crazy that the album wasn't even made available to download! It didn't make it way onto iTunes until some years later.

I don't mind Insatiable (the song) but I can't help but think she'd have had better songs at her disposal if she'd stuck it out with Universal/Geffen. We'll never know what could have been!

It's a shame that her one moment with a major label (Go to Work, with Virgin Records) didn't do much for her. It was just too late by then.

17 years since Jump today. Where has the time gone?? I also saw some pictures of them at the Love Actually premiere, which was exactly 17 years ago as well, and I got so many nostalgic feelings.

We haven't got an active topic for The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits, but it was released 15 years ago this week (30th October 2006)!

I feel like it took a lot of people by surprise when it very triumphantly entered the UK chart at #1! I remember being absolutely over the moon about it!

To me the success of this album felt like the beginning of Girls Aloud being properly appreciated. Chemistry had felt like a precarious era for them, which was unfortunate because they certainly brought quality with that album. It seems that TSOGA was really essential in making the public sit up and realise that the girls had amassed a strong catalogue.

Thank goodness for this album's success because if it hadn't been such a hit, maybe we'd have seen a premature ending for them.

"The Show" was released 18 years ago today, as the first single off the second album What Will The Neighbours Say?



I remember so clearly everything about this, the first performance on CD:UK, the video, the chairs with their names on that they did all the promo and artwork with.

And to top it all just a really brilliant song. Good memories.

It really is so good, I think it's aged so incredibly well and is really quite underrated these days. It kinda has all the elements of what made them so great, a bit wacky and out there with a very unusual structure for a mainstream pop song.

I love life got cold it’s so underrated!! It doesn’t help that it was very oasis tinged which a lot of people thought was a bit of a cheek for the girls but I love that they did something different especially since they then went onto some very poppy releases after that.

'Life Got Cold' isn't a GA favourite for me - the 'Wonderwall' similarity is really quite striking and one of those is enough. Belated 'The Show' appreciation though

(it was the first Girls Aloud single I ever bought though as I spotted it at a car boot sale a few years later and wanted it just because it was them )

I appreciate 'Sexy! No No No...' now more than I did at the time as well *.* for years I considered 'Biology' to be my favourite GA single but this eventually dislodged it. After just commenting in the 'Gimme More' thread, it has suddenly struck me that 2007 was really serving the memorable pop intros with both "it's Britney bitch" and Cheryl's opener here.

I remember clear as day receiving an email from their website saying that a new GA single called 'Sexy! No No No...' was coming out and being very excited, but also confused by that title

I think it's one of their middling chart runs. There were many hit singles that experienced fairly frontloaded chart runs in those days, but they still felt like hits even though they were shortlived - and I think that applies to 'Sexy! No No No...'!

10 weeks in the Top 75 was a longer stay than Life Got Cold (9), Wake Me Up (9), Long Hot Summer (8), See the Day (6), Whole Lotta History (5), I Think We're Alone Now (7), Walk This Way (6) & Something New (7), and it equaled The Show, Love Machine, Biology and Untouchable.

I wouldn't say its quite comparable to Long Hot Summer, which spent 13 weeks in the Top 200 compared to Sexy!'s 21 weeks.

Radio wasn't overly supportive of Sexy [93-Out-47-48-42-*30*-47-52-Out] (The #30 peak was the same week it reached #5 in the charts). Considering that the video is arguably one of their best, TV airplay was surprisingly a bit on the cool side as well (It peaked at #8 in the TV charts, in the same week it was #5 in the singles chart - and it only spent 7 weeks in the TV airplay Top 40).

As a song it is quite out there, not the safest of choices - so I think all things considered it did quite well!

Love Machine was released 18 years ago on Monday 13th September 2004! #2 in the UK for two weeks and certified Gold in 2020.

A bittersweet throwback today. 10 years ago today, a 10 day countdown began, which culminated in the announcement of their reunion, the Ten album and Ten tour.



That was an incredibly exciting time! Their 3 years on hiatus had felt like an eternity to me.

Other Girls Aloud happenings 10 years ago - Cheryl was midway through her A Million Lights UK & Ireland tour, while Kimberley had started her journey as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.

10 years ago today, Girls Aloud announced their reunion + the Ten album and Ten tour at a press conference. It had been 3 years since they were last together:




'The Promise' was released 14 years ago today! Their fourth UK #1 and a Brit Award winning single:




And 20 years ago today, the first live episode of Popstars: The Rivals (with the female contestants) aired on ITV.












I remember watching those Popstars: The Rivals episodes. I was instantly a fan of Nadine and Nicola, some great performances from them. Looking back, Popstars: The Rivals had pretty cheap production values and the song choices were by and large very old fashioned.

My first reaction to 'The Promise' after hearing its radio premiere was slight bewilderment and disappointment!! I needed to hear it a few more times before it started to click. Then I really started to love it and couldn't believe I'd ever not liked it. It soon became apparent that the song was catching on in a big way, particularly the reaction to their performance of it on The X Factor. It was a fantastic time to be a Girls Aloud fan. After 6 years together, it felt like they'd gone up another level in terms of success - they felt genuinely massive.

It blows my mind that the 'Ten' era was 10 years ago. When 'Something New' premiered, 'Sound of the Underground' (the song) was still a couple of months away from being 10 years old.

One of my biggest concert regrets is not going to the Ten tour I was only 15 at the time and wasn't really much of a concert-goer until adulthood. I do own the DVD for the tour at least. I was so excited that they were back anyway! I remember the chart battle between 'Something New' and 'Troublemaker' and despite my username being JadeGagaOlly at the time, I of course downloaded it, sorry Olly but my childhood heroes were back I now own the lovely blue vinyl for it too, didn't start collecting the format until 2014. My favourite musical moment of the era was actually 'On The Metro' though and I thoroughly agree with the popular opinion that it was a missed single opportunity.

My feelings around 'The Promise' were similar to yours Jay! I couldn't believe what I was hearing at first but it soon won me over. It was great to watch the achievements unfold 6 years into their career, like another #1 single and a first Brit Award. A random memory I associate with the song is five teachers in my school singing it for an assembly while aiming to copy the looks from the video on a budget - I was wearing a sparkly dress to the school disco and one of them asked me where I got it from as they said it'd be a perfect GA dress their impact.

I really need to sit down and watch more Popstars content one day - I vaguely remember 'Sound of the Underground' on the radio at the time and have seen their auditions but that's about it!

I’ll Stand By You is a real beauty, saddens me to see this often ranked quite low on their singles list just because it’s a cover. Taken on extra poignancy since Sarah’s passing, her opening and closing lines kill me every time.

I often see Biology rated as the very best Girls Aloud song, I can definitely see why but it’s not quite one of my favourites. Still a 9/10 though! Love the unconventional song structure and the way the chorus doesn’t appear until like half way through the song, yet the song is still so catchy and fun. The video is so chaotic, I love it!

Today’s date is 10 years since the release of Ten!



My main memory of the album from the time is being quite upset about its chart performance. Midweek #3 turning into an eventual entry of #9 was a let down. Then falling to #26 in the second week! (Lol this wouldn’t seem too bad nowadays).

I guess the album was a bit of a hard sell. It had only been 6 years since The Sound of Girls Aloud. Granted, Ten had singles on it that were released after that, but then it hadn’t been all that long since Tangled Up and Out of Control. I’ve said it before but I think they were in a slightly weird spot, it felt too early for Girls Aloud nostalgia. I get why they wanted to mark 10 years since forming but after a 3 year break it could have been a more impactful return with a new studio album rather than peddling the hits for a second time.

Still, it gave us 4 new songs which is more generous than many Greatest Hits. On the Metro is a career highlight and it’ll always be mad that it wasn’t a single.

I’ve never particularly liked the track list order.

I hadn’t noticed that Jump on YouTube ended early I wish that the label would give their online presence a tidy up. Remastered videos would be lovely, better YouTube default pictures. Singles tidied up on streaming/download so that every B Side & remix is available, with HQ artwork.

Jump was definitely the beginning of Girls Aloud having a more fun image, and thankfully it paid off, in terms of their label being happy with its success and allowing them to move forward to album 2! It’s will always seem crazy that the label were getting cold feet about the group’s future after achieving a #2 album and singles going in at 1, 2, 3 in the charts. I get that the album sales weren’t overly impressive to begin with, but still…

On the subject of ad libs, it’s a shame that Brian Higgins had a distaste for them in studio versions. The ad libs the girls added into live performances were often so good and memorable that I’d find myself thinking of them while listening to the studio versions and it made it feel like they were missing. Girls Aloud clearly liked an ad lib because even during the first album era they’d add some in to live performances! Sarah’s belt in The Promise.

No Good Advice really does deserve more! It felt increasingly overshadowed even during their heyday, and in recent years it feels lower down in terms of remembered Girls Aloud singles. I hope it gets its moment to shine in this Deluxe album era.

It definitely deserved way more at the time too! Its Top 40 chart run: 2-5-11-17-26-36-out, it sold 105,000 copies in 2003 and that was enough to make it the 56th best seller of the year. Plus of course it's still not silver, 20 years later... grr.

Obviously streaming has made the end of the year chart a completely different thing to what it was like in the physical days, but the 56th highest song of 2022 had 495,000 sales. *Dreams of No Good Advice of going Gold and being close to half a million sales in 2003*.
