2009 was a pretty decent year in terms of successful acts when you look back: Little Boots, White Lies, Florence and the Machine, Empire of the Sun and La Roux - though only Florence has managed to maintain success beyond a debut era.
I'm excited to see how 2015's bunch fair - really hard to call with the likes of Raury, George the Poet and Stormzy - all are pretty unconventional chart toppers. Years & Years are one of the most exciting bands around at the moment, I'm certain they won't disappoint. I've been followed the poll since 2010 when Ellie Goulding won it and the only disappointing winner was Michael Kiwanuka, even when they announced him. I was a bit gutted that Tom Odell was snubbed for Haim too, but looking back I've really enjoyed both of their debuts. Some of these T5 placings haven't materialised at all though - I mean what did Sampha put up to make him one to watch in 2014? The track with Drake, "Too Much", was already out and I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. |

2007's shortlist was hilariously off looking back. Mika was pretty much the only one on there who had proper success. Everyone was still trying to peddle landfill indie filler acts as the next big thing and ultimately didn't get anywhere as that's the year it finally became overexposed and died off from the summer onwards. I still love how everyone scoffed at how wrong the BBC were in 2008 to pick Adele over Duffy...we know who won the battle and the war. In fact, 19 can't be far off the sales of Rockferry now anyway, so Adele will have soon won both! The most consistent winners for me have been Ellie Goulding, Mika, Little Boots and Adele but I've liked all to some extent apart from 50 Cent and Michael Kiwanuka. Did the critics really rally around Marcos Hernandez enough to get him into the top ten in 2006? So odd, he was only ever going to be a one hit wonder at best and then that flopped so... |

I've gone for Ellie anyway. As brilliant as Adele is Ellie has been more consistent in terms of both albums and singles for me. I didn't care THAT much for Adele's 19 if I'm honest...

Little Boots circa 2009 is by far my favourite Sound Of winner. In a post-Taste It world however, I have to go with Ellie as my favourite winner. That said I'd love to see a world where Marina had won.

He didn't even have THAT! He had just one #41 single and that was it. Are you thinking of José González by any chance? |

I still very much prefer Duffy over Adele. But regardless, at the time with this as the Brits introducing the Critics choice award just to give Adele an award before she'd done anything, it was nice to see the public not being spoonfed who to buy and the underdog from Wales doing well. |

I'd say definitely Adele, but there are some also some other great ones such as Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith, and looking at this list it is quite surprising how many of them basically flopped with their 2nd albums namely = Little Boots (never got past Remedy), Mika (his 2nd failed when compared to his first and run of singles, then his 3rd flopped altogether), and Jessie J (to some extent, okay her 2nd era wasn't a flop but definitely ran out of steam and her 3rd "Sweet Talker" had "Bang Bang", but apart from that hasn't really lived up to the hype and the other singles seemed to have flopped). Also Haim and Michael Kiwanuka (who are they)
