Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Hold Atop Hot 100, Miley Cyrus Soars to Top 10
5/22/2017 by Gary Trust Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, tops the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated June 3) for a second week. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus' "Malibu" cruises from No. 64 to No. 10 following its first full week of tracking, becoming her first top 10 since "Wrecking Ball" in 2013. "Despacito" (released on Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records) leads the Streaming Songs chart for a second week, with 59.4 million U.S. streams (up 9 percent) in the week ending May 18, according to Nielsen Music. It also rules the Digital Song Sales chart for a third week, with 115,000 downloads sold (up 11 percent) in the week ending May 18; for a second consecutive week, the remix with Bieber, released April 17, accounts for 73 percent of the song's sales. On Radio Songs, "Despacito" bounds 11-7 with 72 million in all-format airplay audience (up 27 percent) in the week ending May 21. Fonsi and Daddy Yankee each earn their first Radio Songs top 10; more on Bieber's count in a bit... "Despacito" (which translates to "slowly" in English) additionally tops the Hot Latin Songs chart for a 16th week. A week ago, on the May 27-dated Hot 100, the track became the first mostly-Spanish language Hot 100 No. 1 in 21 years, since Los Del Rio's 14-week No. 1 "Macarena" in 1996. Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" ranks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a third week after topping the May 13 chart. Still, it leads the Radio Songs chart for a third frame, with 173 million in audience (down 1 percent), and tops Hot R&B Songs for a 14th week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a seventh frame. Back to Bieber: Not only did "Despacito" mark a milestone for Latin music with its Hot 100 coronation a week ago, but it also made history for Bieber, who became the first artist ever to notch new Hot 100 No. 1s in back-to-back weeks, as a week earlier (on the May 20-dated chart) he debuted at the summit as featured on DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," also featuring Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne. After descending to No. 3 last week (in its second frame), the collab holds at No. 3. "One" rebounds 3-2 on Streaming Songs (45.7 million, essentially even week-over-week), while slipping 2-3 on Digital Song Sales (77,000, down 4 percent). On Radio Songs, "One" jumps 14-8 (69 million, up 28 percent). Thanks to the climbs of "Despacito" and "One," Bieber ups his count to 10 Radio Songs top 10s. With "One," Lil Wayne lands his 20th Radio Songs top 10, Khaled collects his second and Quavo and Chance the Rapper each tally their first. Lil Wayne extends his mark for the most top 10s among male artists on Radio Songs (which began in 1990), pushing further ahead of runner-up Drake (18). Among all acts, Lil Wayne ranks third, after Rihanna (28 top 10s) and Mariah Carey (23). "One" adds a third week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, Ed Sheeran's former 12-week No. 1 "Shape of You" and Kendrick Lamar's "Humble.," which topped May 6-dated chart, are steady at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. The Chainsmokers and Coldplay's No. 3-peaking "Something Just Like This" rebounds 7-6 on the Hot 100, as The Chainsmokers spend a 55th consecutive week in the top 10, a streak second only to Katy Perry's 69-week run in 2010-11. On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, "Something" logs a 10th week at No. 1. "Something" swaps spots with Future's No. 5-peaking "Mask Off" on the Hot 100 (6-7), while Lil Uzi Vert's "XO TOUR Llif3" keeps at its No. 8 high. Wrapping the Hot 100's top 10, Miley Cyrus' "Malibu" vaults 64-10 following its first full week of activity. Released May 11, the song rockets 22-2 on Digital Song Sales with 77,000 sold in the tracking week of May 12-18 (after selling 29,000 on May 11). It concurrently enters Streaming Songs at No. 11 (21.5 million U.S. streams in the week ending May 18), while drawing 13.5 million in airplay audience in the week ending May 21. "Malibu," which Cyrus performed live on national TV for the first time last night (May 21) on the Billboard Music Awards, broadcast on ABC, marks Cyrus' ninth Hot 100 top 10 and first since "Wrecking Ball," which became her first No. 1 (for three weeks) in fall 2013. She's earned eight of her nine top 10s under that billing; her former Disney Channel alter ego Hannah Montana was credited as the artist on 2009's No. 10-peaking "He Could Be the One." And, from Montana to California: "Malibu" (one of two songs by that title to hit the Hot 100: Hole's different composition reached No. 81 in 1999) is the latest California location name-checked in a Hot 100 top 10, joining hits ranging from "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)" by Jan & Dean (No. 3, 1964) to "Beverly Hills" by Weezer (No. 10, 2005), along with nine top 10s that feature "California" in their titles, including No. 1s by the Eagles, 2Pac and Katy Perry. |
