This is annoying scheduling as I was hoping Steps would get a No.1 this time. I suspect Gary should easily do it though but - although I really like him - would welcome an upset. I can see it being maybe 50k vs 35k in Gary’s favour, if he can still pull in numbers like that.

Gary will definitely beat Steps I’d think he’s one of those mums / grans favourites who’ll sell in droves over the Xmas period. I also imagine he’ll get promo on just about every show possible from the daytime shows through to Strictly. However Steps will also go hard on promo I think Gary’s got it on lock.

I have a bit of a hunch that here might be a big release by a more current artist dropping around that time what’s as of yet not announced but of those two I sadly don’t think Steps stand a chance I think Gary will outsell and it won’t even be close.

Im a fan of both and would love both to get a number 1 so hopefully one of them change their release date although unlikely. But i think Gary will sell more than Steps, it may also depend on how many different formats each are releasing, streaming wise neither will do all that great.

My aim for Miley would be to debut top five but I can see her possibly repeaking next year depending on how big her Dua collab is and anything following that!

I wonder if Gary will move to the following week especially as he will be a huge cd seller ?

Steps could even debut at midweeks #1 with the amount of time their album has been up for pre-order but think they will probably struggle throughout the week to remain stable!!

Except for the fact Supermarkets didn’t stock new releases last lockdown as they moved their focus over to essentials (hence the big drop in physical sales as the lockdown continued).

I think this race might be closer than people think now. Steps are no1 on iTunes and have had a couple of singles out including something in your eyes which appears to have helped album preorders considerably. Gary has had two songs out but neither have made much of an impact to date and the style is quite different to his usual.

Erm wow that looks promising for Steps! I said Gary for the obvious #1 but I pray and hope Steps sneak it through, would love for them to achieve a #1 album in 4 different decades! I'm not a fan of Gary Borelow he can do one. Miley Cyrus could be a threat she will surely get the biggest streaming numbers!?

If Steps can repeat some of what Kylie did this week they could be in with a stronger chance. From the songs from both albums so far I have to say I'm much preferring Steps. Steps wont get the same bug promotion slots that Gary might get, I'm happy for both to go number 1 but this time round I'm slightly rooting for Steps more.

I’m a bit surprised that Gary isn’t even top 20 on Amazon at the moment (he’s 27 and 34). For somebody who is going to rely hugely on physicals I would expect him to be much higher. For example, Kylie had both her versions of Disco in the top 10 on release. With 20000 presales , and Graham Norton and Strictly he’ll easily get the no 1, I’m just a bit surprised that he’s so low at the moment. I guess he must rely heavily on supermarket sales?

I still think Gary has this in the bag but would love to be surprised by a Steps #1 of course. I'm rooting for them all the way. Miley's streaming will surely be big with her having 2 big hits in the top 10 so she isn't to be written out either.

I just really really want Steps to be the first 90's band to achieve a #1 album in the 90's, 00's, 10's and 20's so bad lol!!!

Have streamed all 3 albums and Steps should be the clear winner for the top spot - what a fantastic pop album with no filler.

Miley’s album is fantastic too, I think it will take a while to grow through but I can definitely see it hanging around for a while and selling really well.

The Gary album is nothing short of dreadful, he really should stick to the formula and sound that works so well for him.

I wouldn't take this as a sure fire thing though. Little Mix were consistently ahead of Kylie on pre-orders on iTunes and then they never managed to hit #1 on iTunes for the entire week.

I'm not sure who will get it. Steps aren't big sellers, but Gary is, but Gary's album isn't really that good (Steps isn't much better but gun to my head I'd choose Steps)

Personally I think Miley should get it as she released the better project but oh well, we'll see.

I’m sure BMG will pull out all the stops but I think Steps would have to be leading right now to achieve #1. Gary has two very big promo slots which will probably have a bigger effect than the scattered smaller promo that Steps have. The reason the sales are so close right now is because of preorders and I think Steps fans are more likely to multibuy than Gary fans.

Sat mids only have Fri pure sales, so the effect of GN is not shown on today's mids
apparently it's 23K for Gary and 21K for Steps with just 1500 copies in-between
and Steps are outselling 3-10 combined, which reads like Miley is very far, but it's just pure sales with no streams yet

Disco had a few weeks to build up iTunes pre-orders before Confetti's pre-order went up though. So Little Mix were effectively playing catch up, and it being ahead was a little deceiving. Confetti's pre-orders were also concentrated with just one version of the album, whereas Disco's were spread over a deluxe and standard.

It seems that Steps will end up having stronger downloads than Gary, and I would assume better streaming too!

Will be interesting to see how things turn out this week, and if BMG pull out some Kylie-esque tactics.


I was more referring to the effect on iTunes and Amazon, Gary didn't exactly experience a surge following his appearance. His album is currently #8 and #56 on iTunes / #18, #28, #140, #472 on Amazon.

I suppose the effect might be felt more from supermarket sales, but we shall see

If only Steps could achieve some high profile slots. It's a bit frustrating that they prove themselves commercially over and over again, yet there still seems to be a glass ceiling for them, i.e. not getting big chat shows / performance slots.

Miley will most likely be at #3 once streaming is added, I'm guessing she will probably end the week at around #4 which is still a decent achievement, I hope it just has a decent chart run.

Miley is on a little under 3.9k, I suppose she'll be a stronger streaming success though. She only has 1 CD which doesn't help matters.

The bulk of Miley's sales will likely come from streaming, which is good for her in the long run as it means her albums has a much better chance of staying consistent unlike albums by Gary, Steps and King King.

Miley has never been an album seller anyway. 15k would be pretty good for her and with couple of hits the album can go on to get a gold certification. Breakout seems to be her only platinum album and those were very different days for album sales.

but Midnight Sky has been huge, especially with radio but also iTunes, I find it unbelievable that cannot even translate into 4K pre-orders
She's doing ok on streaming but nothing amazing if you leave out the top 2 and the inflated streams from the NMF track, cannot see that adding much... was really expecting more...

you cannot compare, nobody has the fanbase that Kylie has to spend so much money and buy 15 vinyls and 10 cassettes
also you have to look at the long-term sales not the week 1 sales...

It’s not like everybody bought multiple copies, Kylie would have had a very significant number of people just buy one copy. The fact she’s stayed Top 10 for 3 weeks & on course to make it 4 shows that she’s had general/casual appeal too.

Gary’s sales are way down on his previous solo album and Take That releases. It’s brand new territory for him (well, his label) to feel the need to slash the prices.

Seriously we’re in a thread about Steps Vs Gary and you are still trying to dismiss Kylie’s achievement.

She didn’t have ‘15 vinyl and 10 cassettes’ and I think you wildly over think the amount of collectors and multi buyers she has. She is a consistent seller and ‘Golden’ shifted 48k on week 1 and stayed Top 10 for 4 weeks, the same with Disco it’s clear that it’s appealing outside of her core fanbase rather than people multi buying each week.

As a collector I bought everything week 1 but am not multi buying each week

I’ve just downloaded the two digital albums too.

Partly because the extra content is amazing but also because I was feeling guilty given that I managed to get the CD in Asda on Thursday night as they put it out early (tut tut), meaning my sale counted towards last week and therefore was essentially wasted for chart purposes.

If they miss out by a few copies and it’s like the Touch Me vs It’s The Way You Make Me Feel saga all over again then at least I’ve done what I can I redeem myself.

Sorry to be pedantic, but What the Future Holds sold slightly less in the first week than Tears on the Dancefloor!

It's fair to say that both albums had very different conditions to achieve such similar sales:

Tears
Better promotion, more hype due to it being their comeback with a proper studio album, CD was purchasable alongside concert tickets
Formats: CD (+ signed), vinyl, download

Future
A long pre-order period, Q4 release, released during lockdown, low-key promo, CD and download price cuts, bundles
Formats: CD (+ signed), vinyl (+ signed), pink vinyl, picture disc, 6 cassettes, download + 2 digital versions with bonus content

^^ Tears benefitted from having 6 x CDs (Group and solo album covers) which were signed - they should have done the same this time rather than the cassettes.

That was with the re-release later in the year though, these comparisons are regarding the first week sales! Though I agree, doing signed individual CD covers would have been more beneficial than unsigned cassette covers. Kind of surprised they didn't sign some solo cassettes to give a boost.
