Robbie Williams teases disco album

cheer.gif

By Bang Showbiz in Music / Festivals on 29 April 2020

Robbie Williams' new album will have a disco feel to itafter he was inspired by Kylie Minogue's 2001 track 'Your Disco Needs You', which he helped co-write.

Robbie Williams' new album has a ''disco feel to it''.

The 'Angels' hitmaker has revealed he was inspired to pen party music for his upcoming follow-up to 2016's 'The Heavy Entertainment Show' and last year's festive LP 'The Christmas Present' after listening to Kylie Minogue's 2001 track 'Your Disco Needs You', which he co-wrote.

During an Instagram Live, he said: ''I've got to say, as I look down the list of my new songs from my new album, that I don't know when it's coming out. It's got a very disco feel to it.''

However, there are some more sombre offerings, as on one track, he sings about his Ayda Field - with whom he has kids Teddy, seven, Charlie, five, Coco, 20 months, and Beau, three months - saving his life after his battle with addiction.

The former Take That star - who has been sober for 20 years - belts: ''Gotta change, gotta come clean, can't let my mama see me die like this.

''Drowning in bottles, rolling with models, before I found you. I used to go chasing ladies, naked, wasted. I used to get high, it's true, but now I get high off you.''

Meanwhile, Australian pop queen Kylie recently revealed she and Robbie are sitting on another duet.

The pair famously teamed up on mega-hit 'Kids' in 2000, which was featured on the latter's LP 'Sing When You're Winning' and Kylie's seventh studio album 'Light Years'.

And the 'Spinning Around' hitmaker revealed they also co-wrote a track during Robbie's sessions for 'The Heavy Entertainment Show', which could be released in the ''future''.

She said: ''There's a song with Robbie in existence but it hasn't materialised.

''It's great, possibly for the future. I would love that, I daren't say the name of the track in case.''

We could do with something cheerful Elisabeth , I think it might indeed well happen smile.gif

Hope so. I would love an upbeat album from him.

I think we will have to wait three years for it though.

Laura! How dare you to crash the party :-) if he would stick to the intervals you are right, but maybe he will bring out an album without PR just for fun like UTR? Well hope dies last :-)

The new normal Elisabeth , next it will be Robbie doing concerts from his back garden ..

Thinking about it, it's big enough to hold the whole band whilst obeying social isolation rules sleep.gif

Robbie Williams working on disco album and experimenting with 'dance electronic'
Former Take That star Robbie Williams is to release new music and we can expect a whole new sound from the Angels singer

Now, Robbie Williams has got a disco album in the works and is experimenting with “dance electronic”.

Robbie has revealed he has spent the lockdown recording 20 new songs in a “genre I haven’t touched before”.

He says: “I’ve been writing new songs. I’m very excited about the new songs – I’m in a new musical genre, a genre I haven’t really touched before.

“Not new taste-wise – it’s what I’m about.” He added he is “looking forward” to fans hearing his new direction.

The former Take That star said he had already recorded 24 new songs with a “disco vibe” before the lockdown kicked in – and now says his 20 new tracks have a “dance electronic” feel.

Norwegian duo Seeb want to give Robbie Williams an EDM makeover

Norway's electronic production duo Seeb would love to give Robbie Williams an EDM makeover

Norwegian duo Seeb want to produce Robbie Williams' new electronic-influenced album.

The pair – who have remixed tracks by the likes of Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bastille and Mike Posner, and most recently teamed up with Goodboys and HRVY on 'Unfamiliar' – would love to give the former Take That star an EDM makeover.

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper's Wired column, Simen Eriksrud – who is joined by Espen Berg in the electronic production duo – said: "Even though he's doing his stuff and it's probably different to what we were into in his pop years, I remember his song 'No Regrets' many years back.

"And it was such a brilliant pop record.

"His voice is just waiting to come back, he is a really talented songwriter as well so we'd definitely be able to do something there.

"For us it's about the energy and vibe."

Espen added: "What the artists bring in is their uniqueness and we really like to work a voice that you immediately hear and go: 'Oh, that's this artist.'"

'Rock DJ' hitmaker Robbie recently announced he's going in a disco direction.

The 46-year-old singer was inspired to pen party music for his upcoming follow-up to 2016's 'The Heavy Entertainment Show' and last year's festive LP 'The Christmas Present' after listening to Kylie Minogue's 2001 track, 'Your Disco Needs You', which he co-wrote.

Robbie – who duetted with the Australian pop superstar on 'Kids' in 2000 – said: "I've got to say, as I look down the list of my new songs from my new album, that I don't know when it's coming out. It's got a very disco feel to it."

well EDM is not disco...did I mention that I loved his work with Avicii? Very underrated in the UK.

Posted by: Sydney11 9th June 2020, 06:49 AM

Robbie was always into his electronic dance music, that;s nothing new, he has done lots of it , maybe this album will be a mix of electronic & disco & appeal to a wider audience. Get Kylie on board & he widens his options & audience.

I think EDM has always been his favourite.

Joe Public wouldn't expect that of him though so I wonder if he would take a chance?

I think that as album sales for everyone are so low now - he should. smile.gif

Have to say at aged 58 I don't really know what I'm talking about re EDM laugh.gif

Proper album next year would be November time I am guessing with a tour the following year ( 2022 ) , that might make sense , the Government hinted here yesterday that there will be no major mass gatherings allowed for some time to come & I think that will be well into the next year so hopefully by the following year it will be a bit better & big live gigs like Robbie's will be allowed once more, In the meantime I cold see him doing maybe private gigs but I guess it's a big responsibility for him as he has to worry about the bands well being apart from his own & from an insurance point of view might not be covered .

Private gigs maybe, but nothing big for quite some time to come, only thing in Robbies favour is that he took 3 yrs off in 2006 so even though this was not part of the plan it's not such a shock to the system ....

He's written 27 songs recently ..

Interesting article, I wonder if this s the reason that we have hints of a disco/dance album

They were talking about it on BBC yesterday morning, after all this doom & gloom people want upbeat music to forget their problems , not sad melancholy stuff , they want celebration & that feel good factor , a good reason why a Robbie gig will be wellcome with open arms ,we all need to forget the depressing stuff that going on at the moment ...

Seems that is where the trend is heading these days in music , cannot see it being released as a mainstream album though , where is the market for such an album unsure.gif

Posted by: Tombo 17th July 2020, 07:12 AM

I just checked out a few of the demos he’s been sharing. Te Quiero is sounding good.

I also like the two that were posted on the previous page.

I’m curious to see where this project goes

Robbie’s albums always do well in the chart and I think if it has a radio friendly single then it should be played on Heart and I guess Radio 2.

Posted by: Sydney11 17th July 2020, 07:28 AM

I have purposely NOT listened to the demos Tombo , totally spoils it for me even thought sometimes they do not even make it to the actual album , then I listen later tongue.gif

Posted by: Laura130262 17th July 2020, 11:15 PM

I have listened to a couple of the clips and I really liked what I heard. Fresh and a new direction but with his distinctive lyrics.

I hope he saves them for a proper commercial album and not just UTR4 cool.gif

Posted by: Tombo 18th July 2020, 02:46 AM

I hope he adds California Christmas to The Christmas Present re-release or add it onto UTR4 as it was such a fab track.

There's loads going on for him musically which is great.

I don't feel like we really need a 'Best Of' album, he already has 2 greatest hits albums. Well I guess a decade has past since In And Out Of Consciousness but he's not really had that many hits in the 2010s.

Posted by: Sydney11 18th July 2020, 07:15 AM

I do not want another 'BEST OF ' , a Christmas album Part 2 would be good timing, anything else in the current climate would be a bit of a waste as I doubt he would he able to promote it properly until probably 2022 & then a tour he following year

Posted by: Laura130262 18th July 2020, 11:54 PM

I definitely don't want anymore "best ofs".

New music only please Robbie. happy.gif

Posted by: Tombo 21st July 2020, 12:14 PM

Just coming to back to the electronic dance sound, Indestrucible (Project Money Remix) from UTR 3 is one of my favourite Robbie tracks so I'd love more music like that from him.

Posted by: Sydney11 21st July 2020, 08:11 PM

I wonder if Soul Mekanik will have some input to the album , it's what they do along with the PSB's

Mekanik Now On Duty

Their contribution to Robbie Williams' 'Rock DJ' may have gone unacknowledged, but Soul Mekanik, aka brothers and acid house veterans Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer, are now earning kudos in their own right for their dynamic and eclectic '80s-influenced debut album, Eighty One.

The '80s is often viewed as a period that good taste not only forgot but consciously made a decision to bypass. However, although the music of that decade is often the subject of ridicule – it provided the inspiration for electroclash after all – for every shoulder pad-clad, mullet-sporting New Romantic non-entity, it was also a time when great electronic music started to take hold and it’s this aspect of the '80s that Soul Mekanik, aka brothers and acid house veterans Kelvin Andrews and Danny Spencer, have focused on for their debut album, Eighty One.

“It’s when we first experienced the music that shaped us,” Kelvin explains. “It was the start of post-punk electronic music and there were no distinctions between disco, funk, hip-hop, electro and early house. When we started to record the album, we thought it would have been great to have had a time machine and go back to 1981, knowing what we do now.”
Unlike the opportunists who reference this chapter in music’s past to make a quick buck, Kelvin and Danny have been involved in making and playing music for years. Andrews was the resident DJ at renowned UK club Golden and released a cover version of Derrick May’s ‘Strings Of Life’, while Danny worked as a remixer with Kelvin as Sure Is Pure for acts like Aretha Franklin, Sister Sledge and The Doobie Brothers. Danny also enjoyed a brief brush with fame himself as the vocalist on Candy Flip’s version of The Beatles’ ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and appeared on Top Of The Pops.
“They only asked me to do it because they couldn’t find anyone else,” he recalls. “I was only 19 and was running around with loads of money in my pocket having a laugh!”
However, the brothers’ subsequent brush with fame, when they co-wrote Robbie Williams’ hit, ‘Rock DJ’, was a less positive experience.
“He was a mate of Kelvin’s and he was hanging out in the studio when we were trying to do a track based around Barry White’s ‘Ecstasy’,” Danny says. “While it seemed like a matey situation, when it came down to receiving credits for the song we were pushed out, although it should have been a three-way split. We should have got an agreement down on paper, but my advice is don’t work in pop music, it’s full of sharks.”
Soul Mekanik's debut album is certainly an eclectic mix. Charmaine Baines appears on ‘Basement City’, which boasts the rolling drums of new romantic icons Japan’s ‘Visions Of China’, and which contains the telling line, “we like music and know how to use it”. There’s also the deep electronic groove of ‘Robots’, inspired by the Kraftwerk classic of the same name. Is there a danger that Soul Mekanik could be perceived as producers who have few original ideas and are just skilled at appropriating classic releases?
“We’re not trying to become a parody of our idols,” Kelvin answers. “This album nearly drove us insane. We started off with about 40 tracks and whittled them down to 12: we would have released a double album if we had the choice. Sure, we were inspired by Japan, The Tom Tom Club, and Kraftwerk, but these are acts that always influenced us”
“Electronic music is still at the cutting edge thanks to new technology and, even after 25 years, we haven’t lost our passion for it,” Danny concludes.

I want the album to be a surprise , I'm guessing Guy will have little to do with this type of album as it's not really his forte so there may be input from many sources including SM

It;'s really nice to have something to look forward to but this album will not be toured & given the genre I doubt it will so maybe he is also working on another studio album , one that he can tour in 2022 when is the earliest we can expect any sense of normality when it comes to touring & huge crowd gatherings

I don't think this can be a normal album can it?

"The spring" is only four months away and we're in the middle of lockdown.

Maybe it will be a fan only release not a big brouhaha release?

Posted by: elisabeth1973 11th November 2020, 07:03 AM

I also think it will be a fan album. Either there will be a 'normal' Robbie album end of the year 21 or in 2022 and the next tour in 23 :-(

I wonder why he's waiting so long to announce the re-release of the Christmas album?

I thought last year when it came out was earlier than now?

Maybe they still think it's a bit early?

I know a lot of people are putting up Christmas trees earlier this year because it's been such a depressing year - so I think if anything - he could do better with it this year than last.

Posted by: elisabeth1973 12th November 2020, 06:41 AM

Hadn't he done well last year?...aside of the horrible Christmas show? I understand that tomorrow a CiN charity single is out with Rob's involvement. I think that the week after he will announce the e-release. There had been pictures shown on Ayda's insta when Rob we with his make up team (the one when Colette sings Taylor Swift). I assume this was for pre-recorded interviews. The fact that we do not see something does not meen he is doing nothing (I hope)...still wonder about Switzerland though :-)

Posted by: Better Man 12th November 2020, 08:17 AM

Yeah, agree with Liz.
Usually Rob does all promo (incl.adverts) at the same time collecting all opportunities together at one point.
I think they will announce the re-issue on Nov-20 before charts news in the evening.

Posted by: Laura130262 12th November 2020, 11:42 PM

I wonder if he will do any performances to advertise the re-release?

Posted by: Sydney11 14th November 2020, 04:35 AM

There should be something happening soon, will there be live performances, I doubt it , if he travels into the |UK he has to do the isolation thing does he not

I'm guessing it will be pretty low key.

I'm in a process of hearing this IG live and Rob gave an opportunity to hear some more snippets from the new album. I like these bits!
If I catched him correctly it's going be a joint project with Tim and Flynn and it's not 100% solo album because they have formed a band of trio (8:15).
Well, why not? smile.gif

Just got a snippet rom Upfront - he's going to be on the Aria's on Wednesday?

If I understood him correctly, it's going be a spin-off project.
It's a proper album but by another name (band's name), not by RW name.

Seems yes about ARIA. Via Internet, of course smile.gif

Was he not going to do something similar some years ago , bring out an album under a pseudonym. I like what I hear on the video , his voice sounds lovely , not sure his fanbase expectations will be satisfied though but I think it's the right time to do something like that , he works better under pressure , it will keep him on his toes , time to start thinking outside the box The music press here are saying it is going to be at least 2022 before any mass gatherings will be allowed even with a vaccine in place so what is the point of doing a studio album that he may not be able to promote properly or may not be able to tour.

In fact, it's going be (I hope!) a project along the periodic time with opening music buildings with art gallery in the afternoon and with DJeing on night.
And he is not going to do that for fans but for others and hope for give them inspiration with that idea!

Let's hope no more covid then adnd his mgmt will support him at this not so commercial thing.

Wow !! , that is a great idea, I was hoping to see his paintings at some stage , do you think he might do guest appearances with the Djing , I wonder if this is where the disco album thing he was talking about falls into place

Posted by: Better Man 23rd November 2020, 10:32 PM

Yes, Tess, with his personal appearances, DJing.
Old school house/ambient/trance style is about this project and album.

Who knows, maybe Howard Donald will support him as well!

It sounds like all the things that are close to his heart in one evening.

I really hope he can pull this off and Covid doesn't stop him.

it is time for 'something else'. He had been commercially successful so many years. He can afford to do something near his heart. I also remember that he wanted to do something as 'Francis..." 2003 before he met or while he had met Stephan Duffy. Then he did Intensive Care. At least that is what was written in 'Feel'. He is spreading his wings: LME, Port Vale (somehow), this streaming platform. I am wondering how the platform is doing/will do. He can make the money there to support his projects

Posted by: Sydney11 24th November 2020, 06:46 PM

Wev'e seen bits & pieces of is paintings in his basement gym , glad he is getting the courage to show them a bit more up close & personal , would love to know more about when he did them etc

Posted by: Alberto! 24th November 2020, 07:53 PM

I do hope a full disco project gets the treatment/rollout it deserves tbh.

Posted by: Laura130262 25th November 2020, 12:17 AM

If he's talking about it being ready in the spring then that suggests to me it must be a fan album.

I can't see how there's time for it to be a "proper" album with all the planning involved.

Also he's playing a lot of his new songs on the live Insta's - would he be "allowed" to do that if it were a commercial album? unsure.gif

Posted by: elisabeth1973 25th November 2020, 07:02 AM

I think it is a more than UTR but less than a proper album. He will do another Christmas re-release at the end of 2021 and then a proper album 2022 with a tour 2023 I believe. This would then make it also more likely that Covid is at least somehow 'managed'.

No news here but I like the fact there are some absolutely new (for me!) media and magazines which provide the news about this LP.
Especially a lot of German ones.

Robbie, how are you doing?

Robbie Williams: Pretty good. I've been back in England for a few days and am celebrating my quarantine. I'm not allowed outside the door for two weeks. Not that bad, my life in England is like one lockdown anyway. Whenever I'm here, I stay behind closed doors. In this respect, life for me at the moment is the same as always.

How true is that statement, he does spend most of his time locked up when he comes to the UK so it must indeed seem quite normal for him tongue.gif

Posted by: Sydney11 14th December 2020, 09:49 AM

2 albums to look forward to next year which is brilliant & exciting plus his art exhibition . I wonder about the timing of the spring album s I doubt countries will be back to normal that early next year when it will be safe to travel. It would be a shame if the album/art project did not get the time & attention it deserves so I hope his management get it right with the timing of the launch

It's interesting that there are loads of live concerts been advertised on tv right now for early next year, I am afraid a lot of those will be delayed , it's also interesting to read in that interview that Robbie is financially in a position to be able to take the hit at the moment with not performing live , he took 3 years out in 2006 so he knows what it's like . I wonder if the various governments will curtail the numbers attending concerts for a year or two until they are sure the virus is under control.

Posted by: elisabeth1973 14th December 2020, 12:53 PM

On the new list I saw this weekend his estimated fortune is around 245million pounds. This is a bit of a puffer :-) and he is investing in the streaming services, etc. so that he might also make money without doing music

Interesting point. Sometimes I think this 3-years rest has been very positive for him.
He has rechanged the batteries, found Ayda, became a friend to TT again, his mgmt could look for his finances. So it's not only about Rudebox drop.

Well he does not seem too stressed out about the whole thing right now anyway . He mentioned in one of his recent interviews about having seriously ill parents so I guess he was talking about Ayda's Mum so maybe it suits them all as a family that they are grounded so to speak for now. It made me wonder about the move to Switzerland, it may have been for personal family reasons & not just Robbie & Ayda

He is back working for the moment now so that is good but i take it that SCD is his last live performace in the UK as the Miranda Hart Xmas show will be dine from home

I still believe that it was be end of Summer next year before we see any major moves in the music industry in terms of large gatherings at concerts etc , our Government are one of the pro-active in Europe in terms of lockdowns etc & they have again indicated today that the roll out of the vaccine will build up over the summer , a lot of outdoor gigs are July /August but I just cannot see large gathering being allowed even then

Posted by: Laura130262 15th December 2020, 12:58 AM

Maybe not large gatherings but only last week football stadiums were allowed 2,000 people so there could be small gigs streamed to a paying audience.

Then larger gigs towards late summer.

That's my guess. smile.gif

& tomorrow the stadiums are back to Zero so unless the numbers steady it will be a yo yo rode all the way ...my guess is late summer at the earliest . I think Robbie is timing it right , he releases second album end of next year & then tour in 2022 when his target will be larger venues for that album , in the meantime he will try something new next year with the dance album project , at least they are putting some thought into it this time & marketing it a different way not like when he launched Rudebox . I like what they are planning.

Posted by: Laura130262 16th December 2020, 12:28 AM

I think the Port Vale gig will be high on his list to get done in the summer.

Posted by: Sydney11 16th December 2020, 09:19 AM

Covid has made many artists think outside the box, Vegas was the easy option for Robbie as it was in his own backyard, I am sure he will still fit it in if the opportunity arises but it's nice to think that he has been maybe forced to think of other options ...

Timing is the issue at the moment & that is for all his plans, everything has been delayed, hopefully later in the year things will have improved. Covid is still rampant in many countries & travel restrictions are in place.

Yeah, makes sense. He just has so much in limbo at the moment and I am looking forward to a lot of his new projects.

Thinking about Lufthaus' release and announcement this Friday I'd say the new album in sping could be Lufthaus's album.
Then all this supporting on XXV Tour would be their promo before release. It makes sense, isn't?

They need to clarify it otherwise it could be a big non-event
