Top 100 information in the 90s was available until the end of May 1998 - beyond then only the Top 50 was published. The Top 100 returned in February 2002. In 2004/2005, only the Top 50 was being posted on Haven forum in full. Only a handful of 51-100 positions were revealed, seemingly because the person sharing the info thought that certain songs were of interest to know about. In 2006/2007, only Top 50 information was posted (although Emma's position for All I Need to Know was revealed). 2011 and beyond - Top 100.
So far I've only completed this thread up to and including 2012. There isn't a quick or easy way to check whether any re-entries occurred years later, for instance I don't know whether Wannabe might have randomly popped up in the Top 100 beyond 1997! All of the 1996-2012 chart runs were collated a few years ago by someone on DenDen, I'm not sure who it was (was it you, BabyBoy? ) - thank you to whoever it was! I've underlined the position that coincided with when each single entered the UK singles chart. For instance Wannabe was #27 on airplay on the same date it entered the UK chart at #3. Spice Girls Wannabe 30/06/96: 96-50-27-14-05-03-04-05-05-05-08-12-20-40-68-x 19/01/97: 85-x 02/03/97: 96-x Say You'll Be There 29/09/96: 33-19-08-06-02-02-01-02-03-05-09-12-19-38-41-65-93-x 02/02/97: 94-60-x 02/03/97: 86-x 04/05/97: 89-95-60-81-89-x 22/06/97: 96-x 2 Become 1 01/12/96: 77-31-10-03-01-01-01-02-02-09-13-19-34-51-84-x 25/12/20: 159-81-x (24th and 25th week within the Airplay Top 200 chart) Mama 16/02/97: 33-15-16-29-27-34-33-43-35-54-69-x Who Do You Think You Are 23/02/97: 99-42-08-03-02-01-01-04-08-13-34-34-39-56-68-80-76-x 20/07/97: 94-x 17/08/97: 87-x 31/08/97: 96-x Step to Me 29/06/97: 37-34-31-34-x Spice Up Your Life 14/09/97: 38-36-17-11-09-05-02-02-07-16-28-50-95-x Too Much 16/11/97: 85-48-38-22-09-07-02-02-02-05-10-20-30-87-x Stop 15/02/98: 34-14-04-04-03-03-03-03-06-07-11-25-28-40-48-x (How Does It Feel to Be) On Top of the World 26/04/98: 54-60-58-54-65-29-31-34-35-x Viva Forever 05/07/98: 28-11-04-04-01-01-02-02-06-13-21-37-49-x Goodbye 15/11/98: 26-22-09-08-08-03-03-01-01-02-12-x Christmas Wrapping 20/12/98: 49-49-x Holler 17/09/00: 32-21-14-15-11-13-04-02-07-26-23-40-x Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) 28/10/07: 26-23-28-16-36-x Emma Bunton What I Am 17/10/99: 48-38-30-12-06-08-15-22-48-x What Took You So Long? 18/03/01: 44-14-12-05-02-02-03-05-08-10-16-17-16-22-23-35-46-45-x Take My Breath Away 12/08/01: 23-19-13-12-10-30-31-42-50-x We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight 02/12/01: 38-29-19-19-x Free Me 18/05/03: 47-29-20-15-22-40-39-50-49-x Maybe 05/10/03: 89-77-32-19-20-16-32-43-72-93-x I'll Be There 11/01/04: 67-18-13-10-13-18-27-55-x Crickets Sing for Anamaria 16/05/04: 82-57-x 06/06/04: 84-70-94-x Downtown 12/11/06: 63-46-34-37-46-39-x All I Need to Know 18/02/07: 89-x Baby Please Don't Stop 05/04/19: 58-76... Time for me to ramble on
Wannabe was #50 on radio airplay the day before the physical was released, so that wasn't exactly huge support in advance of release! Yet it entered the singles chart at #3, and then climbed to #1 a week later. Their TV/media promotion and the support their music video received on music channels definitely played the most important role in making it an instant hit. Looking at the other Spice Girls singles radio chart runs, it seems that radio stations weren't too keen to throw huge support at their singles straight away. Airplay positions the day before physical releases: #8 - Say You'll Be There / #10 - 2 Become 1 / #16 - Mama / #42 - Who Do You Think You Are / #9 - Spice Up Your Life and #9 - Too Much. ...so it's surprising to see that Stop became their most supported single on radio, reaching #4 on airplay two weeks in advance of the physical release. Despite that increased radio exposure, Stop sold considerably less in the first week than their previous singles did. Also notable - Run DMC's It's Like That (the song that prevented Stop from #1) was only #30 on radio the day before release. Interestingly Mama initially received more radio support than Who Do You Think You Are, but then Mama floundered and WDYTYA took over. Let Love Lead the Way not making the Top 50 while Holler went as high as #2 is kind of surprising. Considering most of their promotion focused on Holler, and radio snubbed LLLTW, I do wonder whether they even needed to make that single a Double A side. Holler clearly did the heavy lifting. Solo songs: I Turn to You stands out, I would have assumed it would have done better than #5. Melanie C's Reason era was embraced by radio, so the fact the singles didn't do too well despite this must have been a bit of a red flag for Virgin. Particularly On the Horizon being #8 on radio the day before the physical release... in theory it should have done much better than #14. Emma had the opposite problem to Melanie in 2003. 'Maybe' was only #77 on radio the day before physical release... if only they'd played it more, clearly the potential was there for it to be a bigger hit than it was... a #6 entry despite that poor airplay was pretty good going! |

Thank you Jay for all of this. It’s really interesting getting a better understanding of their radio airplay and the kind of support they got during this time. Also interesting to read the comparison of airplay and the reaction from the buying public during release time.

Mel B was relatively ignored if radio embraced TM and FSG more the album would have done better.

Thanks for this Jay, very interesting read.
Mel B was definitely ignored by radio, but Geri also seems to be rather low, especially considering the fact she had four #1 on the singles chart. IRM only reaching 10 seems quite strange, and SIYWGF not even going top 30 is shocking. Makes a lot more sense that and Calling did not do super well on the main charts either. |

Thanks for your analysis, Jay!
Did Yeh Yeh Yeh not receive airplay? Was it not playlisted by Radio 1? Such a shame that the whole This Time era was completely ignored by UK radio. Carolyna had all the ingredients to be a major radio airplay hit! |

You're all welcome
It seems that Yeh Yeh Yeh was snubbed, which is such a shame because it sounds radio friendly imo. Melanie's This Time era being completely ignored is a shame. Maybe I Want Candy put them off? |

I always feel This Time the album was made for all the wrong reasons, to try and sell and be successful. BI she was experimenting and going down her own lane then FDOML happened and she suddenly became obsessed with selling records again. IWC was a naff effort to get a UK hit and The moment you believe was a 2ne rate stab at another FDOML.
I feel like This Time and Stages are so incredibly hollow and ultimately rubbish as they were made to try and sell rather than to make good music. I'm not surprised UK radio didn't touch anything from This Time. |

This Time is a terrible album. Like you said Sammy, she was chasing that FDOML high. There's a few good songs from that era (Already Gone, Understand, Forever Again, Out of Time). Most of the rest are trash. The Moment You Believe is a good song as well. In hindsight it would have made for a better Spice Girls greatest hits single than Headlines.
My main problem with This Time and Beautiful Intentions is the production. The songs sound like they were produced on garage band by a first time producer. The majority of the songs from those albums sound like demos. This post has been edited by Sideout: Oct 12 2020, 09:05 PM |

That's your opinion of course but I somewhat disagree. I do agree that she was chasing trying to get another huge hit ala FDOML with TMYB, however I think TMYB is a far superior song to FDOML anyway. vocally she sounds incredible and I love the way it builds up, while FDOML plods along a bit. I would re-jig the single releases for TT (IWC should never have happened to be quite frank). Have TMYB as a European stand alone single and then launch the album with Understand. Carolyna was still a good choice for her across Europe getting a lot of radio play and charting well in quite a few places so a good second single, then I'd have released Already gone (as that should have made the album!) as the third single. On the album there isn't a track (bar the bonus one) that I actively dislike, there's a couple of fillers ala This Time and What if I stay but they aren't bad tracks they are pleasant. It could benefit from a few more upbeat tracks but it's a mellow listening album. Radio wasn't going to touch anything any solo Spice Girl released at that point, all of their music careers were at an all time low, so let's not be deluded and claim that it's anything to do with the albums songs. Then again it would be boring if all our opinions were the same. |

Baby Please Don't Stop [Emma Bunton] 05/04/2019 - #58 12/04/2019 - #76 19/04/2019 - ? Unfortunately I don't have the charts from 19/04/2019 to 14/06/2019. Baby Please Don't Stop was still B List during the week that would have cumulated on 19/04/2019, so it was probably still Top 100 - but I know it wasn't Top 50. It was dropped from the playlist a week after that, so would have likely left the Top 100 airplay chart. Sadly this also means that I have no idea where You're All I Need to Get By would have peaked on radio. It was on the Radio 2 B List for 3 weeks from the end of May and into June, so I assume it would have entered the Top 100 airplay chart. I doubt it would have managed Top 50. All I know is that it wasn't in the Top 50; hopefully I'll be able to find out this information eventually. I assume #61 is its peak position, because it was dropped from the Radio 2 playlist on 09/05/2020! I'm kind of surprised it didn't do a bit better on radio. In and Out of Love 28/08/2020 - #199 04/09/2020 - Not Top 200 11/09/2020 - Not Top 200 18/09/2020 - #64 25/09/2020 - #58 02/10/2020 - #52 I haven't seen the 09/10/2020 chart yet, and the 16/10/2020 isn't published yet. I can now confirm that Who I Am left the Top 200 airplay chart after it reached #61! In and Out of Love was #55 on 09/10/20. While I'm glad that Radio 2 are supportive of Melanie in terms of adding her to their playlists, it is a shame that once the songs are removed from the playlists, Radio 2 don't play them ever again. For instance they haven't played Blame It on Me since 17th July, despite them considering it worthy of being A-list for a few weeks. |
