Mr. Brightside is selling about 1-2k a week more so hopefully the gap will only get bigger. Mr. Brightside has been ahead on the last two Year End lists now I believe. Julian might be able to give a more accurate picture.

Obviously a lot can change and I am sure those classics will maintain good numbers, but healthier sales at the top should give more current hits a better chance to stick around.

They get by on steady performance (but also generally a strong January when there isn't much new stuff around) and can't keep up with songs that have a few months in the spotlight. As time goes by, those upstarts fall back down, while their newer equivalents can't catch up to the much higher bar that's being set. Like I think a lot of the stuff that's being kicked out at the moment is just gonna creep back in eventually. (In saying all of this, I have noticed that the Australian Spotify chart this year has had way more current music than I've seen in the 12 months previous. Guessing the UK might be similar).
