What a contrast to the previous pop song but it so works. Prefer the album version much better than the acoustic which I find very cold and depressing. Now I just have to get over Michelle's wailing at the very end. Still not convinced it's single material.

Posted by: dazzey1983 25th May 2015, 06:20 PM

O oh get ready for the boo's. This is my least favourite on the album doesn't really do anything for me. And can't be classed as a single.

Posted by: munchkin 25th May 2015, 06:23 PM

I like it - don't love it - not keen on the wailing.

Posted by: suggy 25th May 2015, 08:25 PM

I thinks it's great, love acoustic and album version. biggrin.gif

Posted by: ros 25th May 2015, 08:55 PM

I'm quite enjoying this, I actually like Michelle's wailing, but no, not a single.

There's nothing I want to skip, which is a rare thing on an album for me, even Will's.

Posted by: Dianne 26th May 2015, 05:09 PM

I quite like this song but not as a single, one or two listens a day is enough for me with this song at the moment, it's just not the wailing at the end that makes me run for the hills but it's just a tad on the dark side

Posted by: barbaric_dan 10th June 2015, 05:22 PM

Who is Michelle?

And how is this even a singke contender?

Posted by: suggy 10th June 2015, 06:25 PM

Well it's stuck in my head on a daily basis, it's always the one I sing bits of when i'm just mooching around and believe you me, I do a lot of mooching. laugh.gif

Really would have preferred another track for the next single. I just hope it helps album sales.

Add me to that list of disappointed fans Sunday.

I cannot imagine that we would ever have a unanimous choice of suitable single mind you.
' Like a river,' would have been my preference.

Let's hope we are all wrong.

Promise Me, Will, will be the 3rd single. dance.gif

And yet, Like a River is the song I like least on the album, our tastes really are all different aren't they?

I think we all know, and Will has said in many interviews, he doesn't release music to just sell huge units or buy a Ferrari, it has to be what is right for him and obviously Thank You is. He's sung it almost since he started promoting the album. Quite honestly, I wouldn't have any idea what single would be best to release right now, they are all so different, unlike Echoes when all the songs just seemed to flow into one another(to me anyway). Because I like country music, Gold or Where are you tonight are two of my favourites. For Echoes fans, I would imagine I Don't need a Lover would hit the spot. Promise Me is probably the least likely to cause a reaction to it's release, either way, a one size fits all type of track, maybe that'll be the next one. biggrin.gif

Posted by: finally 11th June 2015, 10:51 AM

Thank You along with LR are tracks I skip.

Just do not like the song and think it's a strange choice as a single to get airplay and sell the album.

Hope I'm wrong.

Posted by: dazzey1983 11th June 2015, 12:10 PM

I would love Gold or You Keep On Loving Me to be 3rd Single but Seeing as YKOLM is on the Deluxe that wont happen.

Yes I agree Marguerite. No wonder Will is so happy to be signed to Island, who will give him the freedom to release whatever he wants. If he were still with Sony it would be so different and I would worry about Will's contract. It's me as a fan who needs to adjust to his lower sales. I'm sure Will is comfortable with it. I would hate him to be an 'artist' who writes songs by numbers just for sales.

Its strange to release a Remix Video so maybe that's just a shot from the Single video as it was filmed at the Spa in London wasn't it that's probably just the Remix Cover they are using.

Gill do you think they will film this tour, seeing as he said he wanted it to be like a story and theatrical it makes me think it could be.

Will Young Announces New Single Thank You
Will Young

Will Young announces the release of his brand new single ‘Thank You’ to be released through Island Records on July 24th 2015. ‘Thank You’ is the second single to be taken from Will’s critically acclaimed new album ‘85% Proof’ which went straight in at Number One on the UK Official Album Chart this month, his fourth Number One album.

‘Thank You’, written by Will with Jim Eliot, is one of Will’s greatest musical accomplishments so far and comes complete with one of the best final lines in a song you are likely to hear this year! Stay tuned to the album version to hear it in full effect…

‘Thank You’ also comes with a stunningly choreographed and captivating video shot in the historic Porchester Baths in London. Watch the video from Tuesday 16th June at http://www.vevo.com/artist/will-young

Will has also confirmed a UK nationwide tour to take place during October and November 2015.

‘The Love Revolution Tour’, Will’s first tour in four years, starts in York on 29th October and runs across the UK & Ireland finishing in London at the Hammersmith Apollo on 29thNovember. Tickets are available from: http://www.livenation.co.uk/artist/will-young-tickets

‘85% Proof’ is the sixth album from the multi-million selling Brit Award winning singer-songwriter and represents his most accomplished work to date. The record is an eclectic, hugely confident and startlingly human record which Clash described as ‘The most deliciously instinctive and relentlessly endearing pop music you’ll hear this year. A masterclass in delivering a mature pop record’. Meanwhile The Sun called the album ‘pure class’ and The Guardian said it was ‘A reminder of how good Young can be.’

‘85% Proof’ follows up Will’s No 1 album ‘Echoes’ released in 2011 which has sold over half a million copies. In the intervening years Will moved back to theatre staring as The Emcee in Cabaret (for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award); presented an ITV documentary on surrealist artist Magritte; filtered his passion for politics via blogs for the likes of Huffington Post; wrote a best-selling biography and fronted a campaign for Stonewall. He also started teaching and mentoring other singer-songwriters.

Produced by previous collaborator Jim Eliot (Mikky Ekko, Ellie Goulding), ‘85% Proof’ is a creative reflection of Will’s extracurricular activities post-Echoes and his most personal/honest songwriting to date. Writing and recording for the new record also coincided with a move to a brand new label, Island Records.

Will Young’s brand new music video Thank You comes out tomorrow, and we’ve got an exclusive first look at some behind the scenes snaps from the video shoot.

The dramatic, gospel-tinged number is one of the highlights of Will’s recent number one album, 85% Proof. Dealing as it does with Young’s childhood bullying at the hands of a cruel school teacher, it looks to be a more subdued affair than the colourful dream world he created in the video to his previous single, Love Revolution.

WILL YOUNG : Thank You

No, no… Thank YOU, Will Young, for providing us with another altogether excellent collection of pop nuggets like your latest single ‘Thank You’.
The British singer hasn’t enjoyed much of a presence down under for a number of years, forcing his local fans to import physically or (worse) illegally download his material.
Thankfully his new label fully understands the needs of his local fanbase, releasing his latest album ‘85% Proof’ digitally here in Australia at the end of last month.
‘Thank You’ was co-penned with Jim Eliot, whose previous body of work includes Olly Murs’ ‘Dear Darlin’, Ellie Goulding’s ‘Anything Can Happen’, Kylie’s ‘All The Lovers’ and ‘2 Hearts’, as well as tracks from Will’s previous album ‘Echoes’.
Will always gives good video – and ‘Thank You’ is no exception; he sits in solemn silence in the steam room, before being surrounded by others sharing his space who break out into a contemporary dance routine. Three minutes and 52 minutes of marvellousness, pure and simple.

SINGLE REVIEW: WILL YOUNG – ‘THANK YOU’
Published On July 4, 2015 | By Meggie Morris | Music, Singles & EP's
Despite widespread cynicism surrounding talent show acts, the first ever winner of the worldwide “Pop Idol” franchise, Will Young, has surpassed the sceptical expectations of his critics and firmly established himself as a pop music mastermind with an exceptional voice. Since winning the British music contest in 2002, Young has forged for himself a varied career. As well as starring in musical productions, presenting documentaries, writing political pieces for outlets including the Huffington Post, and penning a best-selling biography, Young has casually released six albums to date, including four number ones. His most recent offering, 85% Proof, has been described by Clash Magazine as ‘The most deliciously instinctive and relentlessly endearing pop music you’ll hear this year”. Thank You, the latest single to be lifted from the album, speaks volumes about the singer’s astonishing ability to continually create big pop ballads, which take inspiration from numerous genres, but unfailingly centre on that distinctive voice and graceful melodic writing.
Will Young 85 ProofWith Thank You, the talent that won him an entry into the industry over a decade ago is immediately obvious. A mist of redolent strings and a chorus of female backing singers support his incredibly expressive voice, which is captivating as it is communicative. The choir eventually drops to a single female voice delivering vocal counterpoint to Young’s chorus at the track’s affecting climax. Soulful undertones of melancholy pave the way for a dramatically subdued ending, as Young delivers an exasperated final dismissal to whoever had the audacity to break his heart, and ours in the process.
As Young is set to embark upon his first tour in four years (The Love Revolution National UK Tour) Thank You reminds us that the marriage of intelligent, mature writing with an exceptional voice and evocative presence is a sincere winner and Young’s forte – a deceptively simple formula that will see the artist thrive for another 13 years of miscellaneous successes.

Thanks TT. A great review.

I wouldn't say they are necessarily 'bad' choices - just that I don't believe they are strong enough to carry the flag for the album. I really believe that one of the de-luxe tracks would have been better.I can't uinderstand why they didn't release Like a River as a single - it has a great rhythm and incessant beat and tends to stick in the mind. Just my choice of course.

The fact that LR hasn't been picked up and run with is not good because if people don't hear him for longer than just couple of weeks on the Beeb then they won't know he even has an album out. He hasn't done as much promo this time round either.

Thanks Sunday. This seems to have boosted interest which LR doesn't seem to have done. Really pleased it's had such good feedback, as it's not a particular favourite of mine.

Love this: tongue.gif

I see a group of Bauer Scottish Stations have played Thank You. Probably connected to the Quay Sessions.

More adds. Too little too late?

Editing to say the format for the new adds is Oldies. sad.gif

Posted by: ros 28th July 2015, 05:03 PM

Beggars can't be choosers I suppose TT. It's nice to see the list a bit longer anyway.

Tomorrow I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that Radio 2 keep it on the playlist though I can't say I'm confident about it.

Posted by: ros 29th July 2015, 05:53 PM

It's off the playlist for next week. rolleyes.gif

Posted by: truly talented 29th July 2015, 06:35 PM

As expected but still disappointing. sad.gif

I hope Will and his team think long and hard about their choice of third single.

Posted by: finally 29th July 2015, 09:41 PM

TY wasn't radio friendly.

Will's team need to seriously think about the next single. It has to appeal to Will's traditional fan base.

Brave Man, Dare, Keep on loving me, that's what his fans want to hear, imo.

Are from a deluxe ever released as singles?

I don't imagine so.

Its not like Love Revolution was a great or commercial single.

I tend to agree. I may be a huge fan but I'm not deluded. laugh.gif Given the poor single choices, resulting in awful AirPlay (radio 2 aside, though TU has been quickly dropped) and little TV promo it's quite an achievement to shift the 50k copies Will has. Just as well he has a loyal UK fanbase

Posted by: barbaric_dan 30th July 2015, 12:46 PM

Like A River, Brave Man, I Don't Need A Lover...

Posted by: truly talented 30th July 2015, 12:59 PM

Thanks for airing your choices Dan. I wrongly assumed you were only commenting on the singles and hadn't listened to the album. I would have released Brave Man and Promise Me as the first two singles to appeal to his audience gained from Echoes. IDNAL would be a perfect ballad further down the line.
