How peculiar. It appears that the moment that the Daily Mail prints a story that's critical of David Cameron or the Tories, it suddenly becomes the gospel truth among the Twitterati. Someone should really carry out some scientific research into this phenomena.

James Delingpole, quoted in the article, is a deranged loon. Much as I'd love it to be true, I suspect it's mostly, if not entirely, rubbish. A cynic might even think that it is an attempt by the Daily Mail to discredit any more plausible stories that might emerge.

Well, it's not the Daily Mail that did the research - it's a serialisation of Lord Ashcroft and Isabel Oakeshott's book on Cameron. |

James Delingpole, the author of this book, is a deranged loon. Much as I'd love it to be true, I suspect it's mostly, if not entirely, rubbish. A cynic might even think that it is an attempt by the Daily Mail to discredit any more plausible stories that might emerge. He's not the author, he's a source for the book who was a friend of Cameron (although he wasn't the source for this story - he was the source for the fairly already well established fact that Cameron was a massive pothead at Oxford). |

I have had glances at the Twitter feed throughout the night and it has been superb. Now let that be a story people will remember (for about, let's say... four years and eight months)

And, as I predicted last night, there is at least one other, more serious, allegation in the story. An allegation that the Mail are, perhaps, trying to hide in a "good day to bury bad news" way.
When the author of the book, Michael Ashcroft, was given a peerage (by William Hague), he was resident, for tax purposes, in Belize. He promised to give up that non-dom status and start paying tax as a condition of getting the peerage. He had previously been turned down because of his tax status. Shortly before the 2010 election, it became evident that he was still declaring himself to be a resident of Belize. Cameron claimed not to have known this. Ashcroft now says that Cameron had known for some time. If Ashcroft is telling the truth, it means Cameron has lied again. Politically, that is more serious than the story about a different kind of porkie. |

Black Mirror gets scarily close to the truth too many times.

Well, the Abbott-Corbyn hook-up managed to last as "most disturbing mental imagery of the year" for a whole 5 days.
