For me it means the more overt forms of prejudice, like people in white hoods with burning crosses, Nazi concentration camps, or firebombing religious buildings.

I certainly wouldn't include the sort of patriotism that has people waving their country's flags at sporting events, though.

Unsurprisingly, I'm of the view that yes, racism does cover more than mass murder, bombings, and burning crosses in front of someone's house.

It wasn't intended as such - I was merely trying to ascertain where people draw the line between patriotism (as in the example I gave), and actual racism.

So, are you suggesting that covert racism is little different to overt racism? What about unconscious racism?

Racism is anything that denies fellow human beings equality in sentiment, attitude and legality.

All men are created equal is a pretty defining statement. As well as its taken to mean all women too.

Cheering your national football team is not racism. Slagging off the black or gay members in the team is.

Unconscious racism, if it exists, is still wrong. This is not picking out white british as racists, which is usually where you appear to be coming from. It applies to everyone in the world. Its just more relevant to us because we live here and have laws against it.

So we agree then.

IRO point 2, looking back, the US Constitution was very sexist & racist. ohmy.gif

But far harder to recognise, even within ourselves.

Well, it did literally define slaves as worth 3/5ths of a person.

Well, they're all *racism*, just with action to different degrees. Hatred that manifests itself only in me yelling at you is different from hatred that manifests itself in me killing you. It doesn't mean the former is no longer hatred just because the latter exists.

Ignoring the obvious baiting in the OP, racism to me is basically the assumption that someone is somehow ''worth'' less simply because of the colour of their skin. The same goes for sexism or any kind of ism which assumes any kind of superiority based on something entirely beyond an individuals control. That goes for implicit and explicit of course. Tirren has, of course, already said just that but I wrote this before scrolling down the page so shh.
