Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams is a sci-fi anthology series of ten epic, ambitious and moving standalone episodes, each set in a different and unique world – some which lie in the far reaches of the universe and time and others which are much, much closer to home. While the stories may be worlds apart, central to each is the poignant and warm exploration of the importance and significance of humanity.

Each episode is inspired by one of Philip K. Dick’s renowned shorts stories and has been adapted by an exciting list of leading British and American writers and directors. The series also features an all-star roster of cast who head up this thrilling, audacious and emotional journey into the far reaches of imagination.
Channel 4 are seemingly looking to replace Black Mirror with a new sci-fi anthology series, based on the works of Phillip K. Dick. It has some MASSIVE names starring in some of the episodes including Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Terrence Howard (Empire), Timothy Spall and Vera Farmiga alongside many, many others!

Two disillusioned, disenchanted and indifferent space tourism employees who take up an elderly woman’s request for a trip back to Earth… the existence of which is a long-debunked myth. She appears easily confused, plus she’s rich – so, for the right payment, what’s the harm in indulging her fantasies? As the journey unfolds, however, their scam begins to eat away at them and they ultimately find themselves dealt a bittersweet surprise.

Human Is
Starring: Bryan Cranston, Essie Davis, Liam Cunningham, Ruth Bradley
Written by: Jessica Mecklenburg (Huff, Stranger Things)
Directed by: Francesca Gregorini (The Truth About Emanuel, Tanner Hall)

A woman suffering in a loveless marriage finds that upon his return from battle, her emotionally abusive husband suddenly appears to be a different man - in more ways than one. This episode cuts to the heart of Philip K. Dick’s core concern - what, truly, defines us as human?

Father Thing
Starring: Greg Kinnear, Jack Gore, Mireille Enos

Despite society and the world as we know it having collapsed, a massive, automatic product-manufacturing factory continues to operate according to the principles of consumerism - humans consume products to be happy, and in order to consume continuously, they must be denied freedom of choice and free will. When a small band of rebels decide to shut down the factory, they discover they may actually be the perfect consumers after all.

Not really familiar with Phillip K Dick but just going by the descriptions and some of the massive names involved (in cast, writing and directing!), this looks set to be absolutely amazing! I'd seen the trailers for it for a while but I thought it was all one story but, it being an anthology series has really ignited my interest! I adore both Black Mirror and Inside No. 9, where being an anthology series really helps my enjoyment of both series. It may also be why I'm such a big fan of Doctor Who considering each episode is basically in a brand new place with brand new characters kink.gif

It really helps every episode to become an event I feel, and if there is one bad episode it doesn't matter as much because the next week will be completely different!

There are some absolutely brilliant names involved though: Bryan Cranston, Timothy Spall, Janelle Monae, Anne Reid, Liam Cunningham, Vera Farmiga, Julia Davis, Joanna Scanlon to name just a few that I'm more familiar with! The writing and directing team also come from some amazing shows and films, Jack Thorne in particular is a really exciting name!

Looks pretty great and there's been a gap in my weekly sci-fi/dystopia viewing that I hope this can fill. Thought on first glance it was yet another interpretation of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep but I'm actually not as familiar with the sources for these, which makes it all the better.

The first episode was ok I guess, nothing amazing or special, felt like something that’s been done many times before, but I’m holding out hope for the next few eps, I keep remembering that The National Anthem was the first episode of Black Mirror so there is definitely a chance for improvement!

Yeah, that maybe was a slightly less interesting opener. Didn't feel like I knew the world enough to care about the story and ending on a cliffhanger is a bit off, I hope they're not all ending like that.

The good thing though is that of course every episode should be completely different and, as has been said, The National Anthem, isn't the best representative of Black Mirror. I still look forward to the remaining episodes!

If anyone would like to explain the ending to Impossible Planet, I would very much appreciate it because idk the f*** what went on.

I hope these things aren't all going to be ambiguous like the first two have sided towards. Both episodes have had lots of potential in the story but it has been quite poorly executed I feel.

So I've caught up on this and am not really sure whether I like the show or not. The concepts are intriguing and I'll find myself watching it next week but I've found all three episodes a bit boring so far with each feeling dissatisfying by the end.

I'm on the same wavelength as Dandy, seen the first 2 episodes and I thought they were dull, the second episode was a tad better though. I have yet to see episode 3, but for some reason I just can't be bothered with it.

I definitely agree, the concepts are really great, although something we've normally seen before in a different variation. However, the execution isn't entirely brilliant which is disappointing considering the high profile writers/directors that they've got. They haven't really drawn me into the world of the episode in the same way that I do when I watch a Black Mirror episode which means I don't really care about the ending, and, even then, the endings have all been quite poor and ambiguous.

The Commuter was the best of the three and the most interesting but still far from perfect.

Episodes 2 and 3 I would go as far to say I enjoyed.

Episodes 1 and 4 had me turning over within about 10 minutes.

Hoping tonight's effort is an improvement and more in line with the two good'uns!
