What an achievement for George - single 2 from a huge album going to #1 despite an act like him not being traditionally someone who would benefit from streaming etc.,

Boo at Shotgun being number 1 sad.gif Cringeworthy I think with a lot of the lyrics and the cheesy horn in the chorus.

YAS at Anne-Marie avoiding ACR. It has been such a monster hit for her!

Eek at Shotgun. Easily the worst #1 of the decade.

It's even more impressive when you realise it's the 3rd single 😲

Good for him though. It's really worming it's way into my affections tbh.

In this weeks video streaming chart, there's a few songs that haven't made the top 40 of the official chart yet doing well, Mist's 'Ain't Nothing' being a new entry in the top 10, London by AJ and Deno ft EO at #20 and Mariah by Koomz at #24. All three of course largely down to the GRM Daily impakt!

Wonderful for George Ezra, he has waited a long time for a number 1 single.

there's nothing alternative about george ezra but at least he plays guitars
good to see adult music dominating the singles chart for a change,
sure the little girls age 12 will not like it and will say it's the worst song dof the decade
but alas they cannot always win wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

And a song from the Portuguese version of Disney's Moana has spent 74 weeks in the top 100. What's that all about?

Probably parents from the Portuguese speaking community in the UK playing it on youtube for their kids. I didn't know the Portuguese speaking community was that big in the UK to have such a chart impact though! biggrin.gif

Yeah I'm puzzled by R1's stance here.

I'm not puzzled. Chris Brown had his controversy almost 10 years ago. If it happened today he wouldn't be played. Back then people were had a "Separate the artist from his music" attitude, unless they were a pedophile or something. Today the bar is much lower. I think if XXXTentacion's controversies were 10 years ago, and he was well-behaved since, he would be played today, and I think if Chris Brown committed domestic violence last year he wouldn't get played.

It's simply different now. Society gets more progressive and left-wing every year, and for the better.

And if anybody is going to mention Freaky Friday, I would recommend reading my post again...

There's definitely some weird anomalies but if you compare the chart with the sales, streams and airplay charts it is closest to the sales chart. Of course historically the top 10 was just based on iTunes sales. And I suspect they keep it more closely linked to downloads to keep it fresher, and ensures the songs in the chart are more closely aligned with what commercial radio plays (compared to the hip hop songs that do well on streaming?)

I don't think airplay can be weighted more than sales - Ariana Grande is #1 on the Commercial Airplay Chart and only #13 on BT40. Liam Payne's "Familiar" is #2 on Airplay and only #9 on BT40. "For You" is still #9 yet only #40 on BT40.

James Arthur is only #29 on airplay too!

http://ukairplaychart.com/uk_commercial/

Maybe the chart is only loosely based on all 3 elements rather than compiled scientifically. And maybe something dodgy is going on when certain records are higher than they can expect to be.

So basically it's totally made up

Great to see Shotgun at the top spot - think i said when I first heard it on the album that if released it would be a no1 challenger although I never thought it would happen!!

Very surreal for George to now have a #1 to his name! I wonder if 'Budapest' will remain his signature hit or if 'Shotgun' or even 'Paradise' will be better remembered over time.

Yeah I can imagine the Big Top 40 just being essentially made up, maybe primarily based on iTunes but they always seem to remove a few songs and add a few others as they please.

I think Budapest will always be his biggest hit as it's quite timeless and a classic. Bit like everything Queen did following BR which was class but that's what they're remembered for. (Prob a poor example but I was just using it as an example)!
