Shame I'm With You didn't make Top 40 but I imagine it would have done if it's whole run was in one chart year! Another fantastic single choice from his album I estimated late songs' chart runs so that they wouldn't be at much of a disadvantage, but I probably wasn't expecting a January resurgence for this so maybe it would have been a few spots higher. It feels like it's in the right place now though. Thanks Dexton! |

Casting Crowns Make Room (ft. Matt Maher) - Chart Statistics NE (28/10/2017) | 75-63-52-44-26-16-9-1-1-11-34-93-xx RE (22/12/2018) | 84-xx Video Commentary Kicking off our Top 40 we have our final Christian song and last year's Christmas #1 in my personal chart. Initially I didn't really realise it was a Christmas song (hence the October entry) as I was just looking for new Christian music and came across this, a collaboration by the great band Casting Crowns alongside Matt Maher, who managed himself another Christmas track this year. Luckily the early discovery got me to warm to it enough to give it two weeks at the top in December, although as with every Christmas song it tailed off very quickly as well. It did pop up this year again though, the highest retro Christmas song to do so. Ina Wroldsen & Alok Favela - Chart Statistics NE (25/08/2017) | 16-7-1-2-3-6-6-7-13-21-37-50-70-79-91-xx Video Commentary Another #1 here, and another 1-weeker which just scrapes the Top 40, by Ina Wroldsen (not Ina Wrolsden, Ida Wrolden or whoever else you want to mis-type her name.) Ina and Alok are both artists I've had music from in the past (and have enjoyed) so was looking forward to this. My first thought was that the lyrics were almost identical to Rockabye, but I've recently found out that Ina wrote Rockabye about herself so that does fit (in fact, Strongest was about a single mother as well wasn't it). This was definitely a fluke #1 but it's a song I still enjoy, even if I was a bit tired of it by the time it appeared in BJSC. Top 100 Chart History Ina Wroldsen 2016 06 Places (Martin Solveig ft. Jack Savoretti Between The Minds - Chart Statistics NE (14/07/2018) | 60-26-14-11-9-9-9-12-14-19-28-37-46-67-71-83-86-94-xx Video Commentary I've just changed (and almost written commentary for) the song at this position three times, just to let you know how difficult this is - and of course how fresh these results are. The unlucky one to drop out is Jack Savoretti's 'Between the Minds' (which I wrote as 'between the lines' for the first 5 weeks, oops). It's not the liveliest of the songs he's done, but it's the type of powerful heart-warming slow song that I'm loving at the moment. I also very much identify with not liking to raise my voice and liking to listen so this touched me. The Rubens Never Ever (ft. Sarah) - Chart Statistics NE (30/06/2018) | 92-16-10-8-8-6-10-17-21-25-31-46-65-79-98-xx Video Commentary So the next act to release a massive smash in my chart and then fall into the abyss are Australian five-piece The Rubens (although looking at the video you'd be forgiven for thinking there was only one of them). Another beautiful slow song, the only difference being that it has some fruity language in meaning that my fingers got a good workout turning the volume button down and back up again. (seriously, swearing really ruins the ambience of a song). Who is the mysterious 'Sarah' that this song features anyway? My sister's called Sarah - is it her? Moving on from that, The Rubens released a song called 'God Forgot' which clearly isn't meant for a Christian audience and so I forgot about its existence. To be fair The Rubens do have some fantastic songs to boast it's just God Forgot isn't one of them

Walk Off the Earth Fifth Avenue - Chart Statistics NE (06/10/2018) | 10-4-3-4-5-7-8-11-18-31-43-67-71-78-... Video Commentary although they played a song called Fifth Avenue live which could get them another Top 10 single. They better release it quickly because I'm sick of that abomination of a single NOMAD being the last thing on their chart history. So this is indeed that song I was talking about in the Reshuffle, and it did indeed go Top 10 yay. It's very catchy but I do think it sounded better live. Probably because when I heard it live I thought they were talking about living in Canada, 'living with the Mex (Mexicans) and the Yankees (Americans) every night'. But no, they were saying Metz, which is apparently another nickname for Americans. Presumably 'Fifth Avenue' is some street in New York that's supposed to be famous anyway. I don't know. Kodaline Follow Your Fire - Chart Statistics NE (31/03/2018) | 30-17-10-4-3-4-5-16-24-36-46-58-82-96-xx Video Commentary This is the point in the EOY where you being to re-discover how great songs you haven't heard in a while are and this is one of them. The chorus has obviously remained very stuck in my head but I'd kind of relegated the song to that, when in fact when you add in the verses and pre-chorus it really becomes a masterpiece. It was the first of quite a few Kodaline songs to chart this year, none of which did better than it. I really don't see the need for a long thin video though, it makes Youtube look like it's gone mad. Axwell /\ Ingrosso Dancing Alone (ft. ROMANS) - Chart Statistics NE (07/07/2018) | 34-4-3-2-2-2-4-7-11-19-31-49-66-85-99-xx Video Commentary Amid (confirmed?) rumours that Swedish House Mafia are getting back together, Axwell /\ Ingrosso released this summer smash. (I mean, when do they not release a smash? Except Dreamer which was more of a semi-smash but the others are amazing). This was perfect for driving around on the holidays, going on the beach in the sun etc. It had slightly more longevity than its sweaty counterpart but, as all summer songs do, fell pretty quickly when it started getting a bit chilly. ROMANS appear to have released a lot of songs I've not noticed but the one I'm listening to now sounds much more soul than dance. Good Charlotte Actual Pain - Chart Statistics NE (28/07/2018) | 91-51-32-20-12-9-9-9-8-10-16-20-33-48-61-74-84-93-xx Video Commentary Yeah, sort of forgot Good Charlotte existed until this cropped up, and I didn't really think that much of it really - the ridiculously fake smile of that woman hugging the kid at the start of the music video was a bit off-putting and makes you know she's going to turn into some sort of beast by the end of the song. Anyway, Actual Pain (you know, as opposed to all that fake pain) continued to get me until I just had to chart it, and continued to feel really fresh for weeks on end. In fact, it still does now. And another song that's about something a bit more serious as well. Top 100 Chart History 2016 05 Life Can't Get Much Better 2018 09 Actual Pain |

Despite not really sounding like Kodaline, I quite liked Follow Your Fire! I don't believe I ever checked out anything else from the album though (the album did eventually get released, right? )

Lukas Graham Say Yes (Church Ballad) - Chart Statistics NE (06/11/2018) | 2-2-3-4-5-7-11-27-28-38-... Video Commentary The lastg album track form their new album to crack the Top 40, this one feels a bit to this album what 'Funeral' was to the last one, maybe not as amazing but still good. This song is about his marriage to his wife, which in doing he finally lets go of the death of his father. (still spent most of the album talking about it though.) It's a really uplifting song and the organ really adds to it as well. Top 100 Chart History 2016 01 7 Years 2016 09 Golden (Brandon Beal ft. Editors Cold - Chart Statistics NE (27/10/2018) | 39-24-21-16-9-6-6-6-10-9-10-... Video Commentary Songs that peak at the end of the year always begin the countdown much higher than they should and end up a bir lower, and I think this has fallen victim to that, purely because it's been a playlist staple for a few months now. When I first heard this I had no idea I would go on to love it so much - the #39 entrry was during one of my 'songs-enter-high-and-fall-fast' era but then it continued to grow on me and became one of the longest-running Top 10s of the year. It's also helped by the fact that I spontaneously begin singing it whenever anyone says the word 'cold'. Top 100 Chart History 2018 05 Magazine 2018 38 Darkness at the Door 2018 06 Cold |

Embrace Never (ft. Kerri Watt) - Chart Statistics NE (27/01/2018) | 67-15-9-6-3-5-8-17-37-58-65-87-96-xx Video Commentary Apparently this song features Kerri Watt now. It didn't in January but she does play a pretty big part in the song so it does make sense. I'd never really been into Embrace much, although my dad is and they've got some good songs in their back catalogue (Gravity and On Top Of The World ). I came across this when looking at the New Releases thread and recognising their name, leading to me listening to it. After a few listens I loved it, so much that its chart run isn't that ugly even for a January 2018 release. Their other songs from this year have had lower peaks but still a lot of longevity. Only Sun Song For Leila - Chart Statistics NE (21/07/2018) | 58-59-19-20-22-25-24-24-24-29-27-36-46-54-67-73-78-68-64-74-79-83-xx RE (29/12/2018) | 92-88-... Video Commentary The first of three songs inside the Top 40 without a Top 10 peak but with a lot of longevity! Young indie band Only Sun came up with the innovative idea of releasing one single a month for the whole of 2018, complete with a wacky lyric video, and I personally think that's a great way of getting people to know your music more (as I hadn't even heard of them up until they were entered to Unknown Pleasures). This tune refuses to get old for me and is a really solid piece, complete with the fast singing and easy-to-learn chorus. It certainly paved the way for their #1 to come and I think I might even enjoy it more when I'm over both. Interesting chart because you definitely don't follow the UK charts. I can't say the same though.

Really like seeing "Dancing Alone" in there! Glad you like it! Hopefully we'll get some new stuff from them as a trio this year! Interesting chart because you definitely don't follow the UK charts. I can't say the same though. I mean I do follow the UK Charts, hence why I'm a mod But yeah, my music taste is pretty non-mainstream. Thanks guys! |
