12. Paperback Writer (1966) / non-album single
9/22 votes

Missing out on a place in the top 10 is 'Paperback Writer'. It received 9 votes out of a possible 22, beating 'I Feel Fine' (which had 8) as the single to receive the most votes so far. It was released in 1966 with 'Rain' as its B-side - both were recorded during sessions for their album 'Revolver' but ultimately missed the cut. 'Paperback Writer' was of course yet another hit for The Beatles, topping the chart in the U.K. and U.S. It spent two weeks at the top here. It has the accolade of being the last new song by the Beatles to feature on their final tour in 1966. It was also the single that they chose to perform for their only ever Top of The Pops performance - which was infamously lost by the BBC, save for 11 seconds that were later uncovered. Aww! It was given a simple outdoors colour music video, with the most standout element being Ringo, who is doing his own thing instead of playing an instrument. This seems to be a recurring theme - with him previously riding an exercise bike or larking about with an umbrella instead of drumming in other promotional films! 'Paperback Writer' was largely written by Paul, after his aunt challenged him to write a song that wasn't about love. He took up the challenge and wrote this song, which is set out as a letter from an aspiring writer to a publisher. Paul claims that the song came about because he loves the word 'paperback'! He was also inspired by reading about an aspiring author. Paul takes the lead on vocals but the song is filled with harmonies too. In fact, at one point John and George sing 'Frère Jacques' as background vocals! Another notable aspect of this song is the fact that a bass boosted guitar is prominent - a theme that would continue for 'Rain' and songs on 'Revolver'.

'Paperback Writer' and 'Rain' merely being 'Revolver' left-overs blows my mind - those sessions really were quite something! I wish the TOTP performance of 'Paperback Writer' hadn't been lost, such a shame </3 even if the group couldn't take themselves seriously due to the miming.

Okay so all the songs left now are in the top 50 Beatles songs list that I produced! Understandably I have selected the song lowest on that... which is 'Let It Be' eek! I guess that's the one that's suffered the most from overplay for me. Still a classic though, I love everything </3

This is really difficult now but I've chosen 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'.

All of these are really good, going for Penny Lane as it's just not quite as 'impactful' as what's left, for want of a better word.

In terms of songs, I Want To Hold Your Hand is the least sophisticated so it's got to be that for me, the other 10 totally deserve to be in the top 10 (as do another 20 or 30 not on the list laugh.gif )

Daytripper for me this time.

Again, about right for Paperback Writer so can't really complain there.

Hello, Goodbye once again.

Looking like 9 of you are going to have to plump for 1 of 3....

I wouldn't want to hold your hand in leading where your vote should go laugh.gif
