I've started to play Mario 64 and it seems pretty awful and just boring to me so far, probably because I don't have the nostalgia effect with it.

So I've got all the stars now and have been rewarded with starting all over again as Luigi - there's no way I'm doing it all again! You haven't got all the stars then (although the bonus 121st star for collecting all 120 again with Luigi is a pretty underwhelming waste of time lol - thankfully they did this gimmick much better in the sequel) I have only played the DS version of SM64 and I didn't finish it, I can definitely appreciate its significance (and I've got quite into watching speedruns of it as well #geek) but I do agree with you that it's probably one that's kind of reliant on the nostalgia value. |

You definitely need the nostalgia, I never played it as a kid (never even on the DS remake) but I did when I got it on the Wii U's virtual console back in 2014 or so and I found it awful Of course it was hugely influential and definitely set the stage for all the 3D platformers we love to this day but when you go back without the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, it really isn't that good. |

I may not persevere in that case! I do like seeing some of the recurring characters and seeing how they used to be before I started playing Mario games - such as the penguin race etc. The bosses in particular seem very one note and uninspired. Basically grab them from behind and spin them :/

Did you do it all over again then? I played through the entire game all the way to 121 stars more than once! (there are a few very small differences playing as Luigi - most notably the cosmic clone races are slightly harder - but it was basically just a very cheap way from Nintendo to double the time investment to get the 'true' 100% lol) |
