I've started to play Mario 64 and it seems pretty awful and just boring to me so far, probably because I don't have the nostalgia effect with it.

You definitely need the nostalgia, I never played it as a kid (never even on the DS remake) but I did when I got it on the Wii U's virtual console back in 2014 or so and I found it awful  Of course it was hugely influential and definitely set the stage for all the 3D platformers we love to this day but when you go back without the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, it really isn't that good.

I may not persevere in that case! I do like seeing some of the recurring characters and seeing how they used to be before I started playing Mario games - such as the penguin race etc. The bosses in particular seem very one note and uninspired. Basically grab them from behind and spin them :/
