BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions (Wednesday Update + Top 5 Sales)

Posted by: Mart!n 23rd August 2015, 09:03 AM

American singer song-writer 34 year-old Rachel Platten is looking set for a #1 with her debut track 'Fight Song' (which will become the 1300th #1) unless Jess Glynne can hold off the competition to sustain a second week at #1 or will Charlie Puth feat. Meghan Trainor re-claim the #1 position. Other new single releases come from Felix Jaehn collaborating with Jasmine Thompson on the old Rufus & Chaka Khan hit 'Ain't Nobody (Loves Me Better)', Ella Eyre with her brand new release 'Good Times' and Madcon collaborating with Ray Dalton on 'Don't Worry'.

The #1 album looks set to change again as Jess Glynne releases her long awaited debut studio album 'I Cry When I Laugh' featuring all her hit singles and collaborations with Clean Bandit and Route 94, her closest challenger will probably come from Bon Jovi with their new studio album 'Burning Bridges'. Other new album releases this week come from Rend Collective 'As Family We Go', Disturbed 'Immortalized', Natalie Imbruglia 'Male', The Fratellis 'Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied', Bars & Melody '143', and The Bohicas 'The Making Of' all vying for a top 40 entry in this weeks' album chart.

one of the most unpredictable #1 battles for some time ~ rachel patten's lead on iTunes is small enough to open the door to the more heavily streamed hits just behind her with charlie puth and jess glynne virtually neck and neck ~ or with his pre-order a permanent fixture in the top150 over the last 3/4 months could felix jaehn pull a david zowie?

Posted by: Doctor Blind 23rd August 2015, 02:35 PM

Sales in the singles chart are going to be low (#1 probably only around 40-45K) so streaming will heavily weight in the chart this week. I predict a narrow victory for Glynne.. but it could just as easily go to Calvin or Charlie Puth!

Posted by: Danvicii 23rd August 2015, 03:48 PM

Her Majesty Jess Glynne to get her 6th #1 this week please *.*

Would've liked a Felix Jaehn #1 this week but as that's not gonna happen g'won Rachel Platten!

Posted by: Robbie 23rd August 2015, 03:48 PM

Out of interest, since the chart sales week switched to a Friday to Thursday has anyone ever had sight of a weekend compiled midweek chart? I quite like the first midweek chart being on a Monday but the OCC did indicate that there would be at least one midweek chart compiled and published prior to a Monday. I was wondering if anyone who has access to the midweek charts has ever seen one of these weekend midweeks?

Mint Royale must have done as they were tweeting yesterday about Jojo's Tringle being in the 50s section and Rita Ora rebounding back into the chart.

Posted by: SevenSees 23rd August 2015, 04:04 PM

Singles chart will be interesting. Rachel would seem like the favourite, her lead on itunes isn't exactly huge but if her streaming picks up well enough I think she can get it

Jess Glynne for around 60k in the albums? Maybe similar sales to Years & Years but a bit higher

No, but there are definitely ones produced on Saturday and Sunday as “She’s Kinda Hot” was mentioned by Alan Jones as being #1 then #2 on these charts, before eventually publicly announced as the #6 on Monday's fully published midweek.

Posted by: Mart!n 23rd August 2015, 04:14 PM

I'll quite like having chart info on a Thursday when we do get it, as the new chart unfolds next day with hardly any changes, prior to this we had to wait 2 days (weekend) before the chart reveal and throw the odd new track in the lower region of the top 40, now we don't get that. I'm beginning to like the new chart change to be honest, the only drawback is just remembering compiling the new thread topics for the new chart week.

Anyone think Jess Glynne will do a Sam Smith/Ed Sheeran and hang around the album top 10 for over a year

Hard to say, I'm sure the likely release of her Emeli collab + its likely XF performance will do wonders for her album but I can't really tell beyond that

Posted by: Joe. 23rd August 2015, 05:54 PM

I didn't personally expect Jess to have huge numbers for her album until everyone else said it. I thought she'd be around the 35 - 45k areas.

Jess Glynne up to #4 on pre-orders. Wtf? Looks like she'll smash 100,000 first week sales and beat a decent band like Bon Jovi to #1

heehee.gif

I would say also around 40k.

Posted by: ___∆___ 24th August 2015, 01:30 AM

Will be interesting to see where Bars & Melody end up in the albums - They have 19 album signings between Friday and Thursday so capturing the whole sales week plus 2 x CDs, Tape, £5 SMS download & Vinyl plus bundles with concert tickets and a special edition fan album that includes the names of fans that pre-ordered.

Can see it having a 4-77 chart run laugh.gif

Posted by: pippa 24th August 2015, 09:03 AM

Ideally Bon Jovi, Natalie Imbruglia and Rob Thomas can do well in the album chart, it is less likely too happen for Rob Thomas i would predict. Bon Jovi have missed out on a few number 1's with their last releases simply by releasing at the wrong time, i.e last week they would have easily got to number 1 but Jess Glynne is the obvious number 1 this week. With Bars and Melody carrying out so many signings this week they could steal the number 2 and absolutely drop like a very big rock next week.

Jess will be no1 in the albums - probably about 50-60k sales. Singles, lookslike either marvin gaye or fight song but don't really like either.

I'm the complete opposite, I really don't like that we get one on Thursday as it totally takes away any of the unpredictability of any close chart battles for me. If we'd had a few days with no information last week, I think we'd have been less certain of a Jess #1 but as it was, we already knew.

lmao at Ella Eyre's floppagé, the song is a much weaker 'Together' so I am not at all surprised that it could miss the top 40.

Posted by: JosephStyles 24th August 2015, 05:13 PM

I can't see Good Times missing the top 40 at all, I mean Maroon 5 managed to hold up and they didn't get as high as Ella has on iTunes so far. The weekend streaming effect has been and gone so Ella won't lose out because of that either.

Posted by: Hassaan 24th August 2015, 05:24 PM

Given their fan base would be restricted to under 16s (at best), I think Bars and Melody are doing pretty well. But, that is an interesting choice of formats to release an album onto - I suppose if it introduces more people to the record formats of old it's probably a good thing but I don't see why though, maybe their management are hoping that some of the 85 million+ who've seen their Britain's Got Talent audition will make the effort to buy the album.

Jess Glynne could do well with her album, although her single dropped more than I thought.

I must say, I disagree with this! Fight Song has been massive worldwide so it was obvious that it would follow suit in the UK. Echoing the surprise at Jess' album sales ohmy.gif and I kind of agree with the above. It's always seemed to me that she's been fortunate to an extent in being involved with songs that have become hits based almost entirely on their own merits, rather than people also buying into her as an artist. Like, I've had the feeling that if she were to release an ill-advised single, it'd flop disastrously. Even after the 18 months or so that she's been consistently successful, I haven't seen much to say she's been gaining a big profile or solid fanbase (other than racking up hits to her name obviously), so the fact that so many people are investing in her album is really impressive.

Good start for Bars & Melody - The 6 physical format/19 date HMV tour is doing wonders for them considering the last 2 singles missed the Top 50 - The chart run will be horrific though! And ohmy.gif at Cilla already outselling her total for last week - can see this becoming a solid seller.

Posted by: SLlewellyn 25th August 2015, 07:08 AM

Echoing the surprise at Jess Glynne's album sales, but as someone did say the deluxe edition is pretty much a greatest hits (four solo singles and four #1 collaborations) - I'd say it's a good bargain!

I agree but that shows she's not getting default no1s which a lot of artists with big fanbases normally get.

Cilla Black has sold more at this early stage of the week than she did for the week combined last week.

Posted by: Mack 25th August 2015, 02:53 PM

Much rather have 'Fight Song' at #1 than that 'Marvin Gaye'.

Rachel Platten on top of Charlie Puth there.

Although I don't think Floyd Mayweather and Joe Calzaghe would want to fight to this song.

I'm finding it incredibly difficult to find Jess' album. Both supermarkets by me were out of stock and Amazon have sold out of the deluxe version. I'm going to try at HMV tomorrow but if not I'll have to finally step into 2010 and download the album :S

I'm perfectly aware of that, mr_pmt. I was just expressing that those two boxers wouldn't want to fight to that song.

Although away from that. I'm pleased she's getting the success she is with this following '1000 Ships' which could have been successful.

I realise its based on experiences that she has had.

Fight song isn't a great song at all. Very surprised it's reached number one. Her voice is quite weak. I'd rather see Jess Glynne there or Calvin Harris.

Posted by: ___∆___ 26th August 2015, 02:18 AM

Just realised Hometown are not in the Top 100! Thought it would do really well here - Radio friendly track and reached #1 in Ireland - They also have a HMV signing tour.

Edit - Just realised the download is only available this week, CD & HMV tour is next week but it's not looking good if they can't scrape Top 100!

Top 20 for NatIm would be pretty good, considering there is no hype for the album, or indeed for her anymore.

Posted by: Josh. 26th August 2015, 05:34 PM

Aw, was hoping Jess would make it two weeks because it's just so joyous whereas Fight Song for me is more irritating than empowering. Far from the worsr #1 of the year anyway though. And at least Jess Glynne's album will be #1 with excellent sales even if there isn't a song on it as good as any of her singles so far.

Posted by: slowdown73 26th August 2015, 05:39 PM

At least fight song hasn't sold much and her residency at no1 should be short lived. Jess should sell 60k of her album which is impressive in today's market.

I think it's more the video effect than the break news but I'd imagine the latter has had an effect still!

No idea I'm afraid, only have what Music Week have reported so far, this week's been pretty scarce for the full midweek update with sales.

Posted by: 『bré』 26th August 2015, 06:10 PM

Good to see Jess back up to #2 on the singles chart! Looks like Rachel has #1 in the bag now though. I'm not crazy for 'Fight Song' but it's still one of the better #1s of the year. For now anyway. I'll probably have got bored of it within a couple of months.

'I Cry When I Laugh' nearly at 50k already as well, looks on course to beat the opening sales of 'Communion'. Yay.

Posted by: Mart!n 26th August 2015, 06:17 PM

Now we have further info... Joseph is on the case, when he gets a minute or 2.

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th August 2015, 06:22 PM

Remaining top 5 sales added!

Posted by: Mart!n 26th August 2015, 06:26 PM

Nos 2 to 5, could go any way in the singles chart, once all the missing data is added.

I think Jess Glynne's album is just going to fall short of 60k.

Posted by: Envoirment 26th August 2015, 06:36 PM

Great sales for Jess, 55-60k by Friday then! Shame she doesn't look like she'll do the double. Rachel has ~8k lead (although more likely ~7k once missing streaming is taken into account) on Jess and I can't see her overcoming that in just 2 days.

Really hope Selena can climb into the top 20 come Friday! #14 on iTunes and up to #29 on Spotify should get her there I think.

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th August 2015, 06:37 PM

Rachel's lead has remained the same from the other day although Jess outsold her yesterday (only by 500 copies). Rachel will quite comfortably keep #1.

Posted by: Mart!n 26th August 2015, 06:44 PM

Looks like Rachel Platten has got that 1300th #1 landmark, shame it couldn't happen to a better track though.

Charting on streams:

146 Demi Lovato “Cool For The Summer”
166 DJ Snake & AlunaGeorge “You Know You Like It [DJ Snake Remix]”

Charting on mostly streams but also achieving some random download sales from somewhere / somehow:

142 Sigala “Easy Love” (97% streaming)

It was originally scheduled to be released this Friday but was brought forward and released back in mid-July

Interesting to see fellow Northern Ireland-ites Rend Collective likely to get a top 20 album on Friday. Can't say they're necessarily my cup of tea, but nice to see another bunch of local guys/girls doing well. When was the last time that a Christian/spiritual act made the top 20 albums? I know a few have pierced the top 40 in recent years, but I can't think of any that made the top 20.

They had a top 20 album in 1997 and two further albums that made the top 75. So unless there's been another one in the interim, this would be the first Christian album to make the UK Top 20 albums in 18 years.

It's not 100% clear most of the time but I'd say so. Streaming tends to be a day behind and I know Apple Music have failed to report Thursday sales before the chart cut-off point before but I'm not sure if that's the case now or not.
