Dexton's Top 40 (13/11/2018) (Week 79)



To perhaps noones surprise, Jon Bellion's album release sends shockwaves through the chart and makes a couple of chart records along the way. Last weeks top 2 of Stupid Deep and Conversations With My Wife continue to hold their ground at #1 and #2 whilst JT (7-3) makes room for a few new entries...

Holding a monopoly on the top 10 Jon's entire 10-track album occupies the top 10 this week. His genre-bending, emotion-manipulating sophomore album has already racked up enough plays to be bording on my top 10 most played albums of the year according to last.fm *.* Stupid Deep is this weeks #1 since I've been listening to that most outside of the album - but as a whole I don't think I'd be able to put a finger on my favourite track from the album. I've been looking forward to Jon's comeback literally all year, The Human Condition (a re-entry at #2 in the album chart) was my favourite album of 2016 was where my obsession love for him began. After the success of All Time Low I was worried he (or more likely his label) might try and release an album of ATL re-creations but I'm so so so glad they didn't do that A lot of people have been praising Mah's Joint and I feel a bit guilty about charting it so low, but everything else is just as strong the top 10 is incredibly close right now.

For those who won't check out the album (BUT YOU SHOULD BECAUSE IT'S ONLY 43 MINUTES LONG AND IS THREE QUARTERS OF AN HOUR OF GENIUS) I highly recommend Stupid Deep, Blu, Adult Swim, and Mah's Joint as true examples of how great Jon is and how varied he can be as an artist. Also Cautionary Tales maybe features Will Smith. It's unconfirmed so far but they have been in the studio together

And for those who do listen to the album - let me know why you like it and why Jon is now your new favoruite artist Also listening to it backwards (alike to Kendrick's album) is a good idea

Anyway, nothing else really happens. Travis Scott's Sicko Mode enters at #19 despite the Jon Bellion chaos. A few songs could end up with crappy peaks thanks to Glory Sound Prep (mainly Halsey who would otherwise be #1, Ariana who again could also have had a shot at #1, Ava Max, Kygo, Little Mix, Alesso, The Rubens, and Dua Lipa).

The chart has also extended to a top 50 this week which has allowed NF's Lie (#44) and Major Lazer's Blow That Smoke (feat. Tove Lo) (#50) to enter... sort of I'll probably keep this as a top 50 from now on although I won't in future comment on non-top 40 events.

ALBUM CHART TIME

Basically, it's the week of Jon Bellion. Glory Sound Prep (#1), The Human Condition (#2), and The Separation (#6), The Definition (#7), and Translations Through Speakers (#9) make up 50% of the top 10 and kind of boot out big hitters like Eminem, Ariana, and Amy Shark. The Human Condition was Jon's debut album, and the other three were mixtapes which were added to Spotify only last year. Travis Scott's Astroworld climbs to a new peak of #3.
