Oasis win Brit honour
Source: Music Week

The band, who have already been the recipient of four Brit Awards, for Best British Breakthrough Act in 1995, and for Best British Album, Group and Video in 1996, will perform at the awards which take place on February 14 at London's Earls Court.

Previous winners of the Outstanding Contribution award have included Paul Weller (2006), Bob Geldof (2005), Duran Duran (2004), Tom Jones (2003), Sting (2002), U2 (2001) and Spice Girls (2000).

The Mancunian-five piece formed in 1991, releasing their debut single Supersonic in 1994. The group has gone on to score eight number one UK singles, selling more than 50m records worldwide. The band are credited in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles as the biggest selling British guitar band of the 1990s.

Oasis will release their first greatest hits collection, Stop All The Clocks, on November 20.

Great!!

You can't say they didn't deserve it. They changed the british culture back in the 90's.

and still are an important band today.

Oasis lads to lead Brits parade
October 20, 2006

IPB Image

OASIS are to be honoured with the lifetime achievement gong at next year’s Brit Awards.

That means we’re in for a great show — for the first time in years.

The GALLAGHER brothers and pals will also close the proceedings with a medley of the band’s finest tunes.

And as the show is to be televised live, who knows how that will go?

It is the first time since 1989 that ITV1 have committed to a live broadcast — which means there is little chance for television bosses to edit out any of the lads’ bad behaviour.

Recently the event has been filled with slick pop stars who behave themselves and go home to bed early.

And it has also suffered from being crafted into a bland TV show by the time it reaches our screens — with any swearing and shenanigans on the cutting room floor.

Knowing that Oasis will be there at Earls Court on Valentine’s Day injecting rock cred will also encourage younger bands to turn up.

ARCTIC MONKEYS have said they were not planning to attend but the lure of NOEL and LIAM might tempt them from Sheffield.

It certainly means you’ll get the likes of KASABIAN and RAZORLIGHT.

The BPI, the trade body who organise the awards, made their Oasis announcement yesterday.

Chairman Peter Jamieson said: “As the Brit Awards goes live for the first time in nearly two decades, it is appropriate that we should honour one of the most exciting live acts the UK has produced.”

The tradition of televising the awards live ended after the 1989 show, now infamous for its horrendous technical glitches and the even more disastrous double act of MICK FLEETWOOD and SAMANTHA FOX as hosts.

The Outstanding Contribution To Music award is the first Brit to be won by Oasis since they scooped three awards in 1996.

Previous recipients of the gong include THE BEATLES, DAVID BOWIE, STING, THE WHO and U2.

The awards will also feature a first — the Best Single award will be voted on LIVE up to the moment it is presented.

So it seems we are in for a good Brits year after a few damp squibs.

As Liam would say: “Come on!”

Much deserved award even if it was only for some of their classic tunes from the 90's.

I reckon Noel Will have to sing and Liam will be either doing a "mtv unpluged 96" or he just won't show up.

If they don't show up they will probably just show highlights throughout their career with one of their songs playing.
