BuzzJack Music Forum _ TV Shows _ The Good Place

Posted by: The-BrightPlaces Apr 27 2017, 12:33 AM

Starring:
Kristen Bell || William Jackson Harper || Jameela Jamil || D'Arcy Carden || Manny Jacinto || Ted Danson

This is my most recent obsession, I found it so funny and it's so easy to watch, it's sort of like Grace and Frankie in those aspects. Kristen Bell is also amazing of course. Anyway here's a small synopsis of the show:

The Good Place is a town where those who have been good throughout their lives go once they have passed away. The series focuses on Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a recently deceased young woman who arrives in the Good Place. However, she quickly realises that she was sent there by mistake. With the help of Chidi (Harper), Eleanor tries to hide her morally imperfect past and right her wrongs, seeking to finally earn her spot in the Good Place.

What they do not mention in this description is the funniest character - Janet - who is a 'robot' and provides answers to all and every question anyone in the town has. Her deadpan humour always gets me it's brilliant.

The show has also received pretty good ratings:
IMDb | 7.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes | 90%

Overall, this is a really lighthearted comedy and there's only 1 season so far (12 episodes). The only downfall is that it's not on netflix BUT, do not fear, I have provided a link to a half decent website http://123movies.net/watch/yGDkLLx6-the-good-place-season-1.html if anyone wants somewhere to watch it, which I highly suggest you do smile.gif

really?! i forking love her.

watched ep 1 of s2 tonight.. wasn't that thrilled with it tbh. felt like it was a bit of a waste of 45 mins.
no progression + while the concept was cute to begin with, i can't see where it's going to go.. it's been pretty predictable so far.

though, i will say.. it did have the best surprise twist in a season finale that i've seen in a long time.

^ I was loving the new episode but did not like the way it ended, did sort of make it feel like a waste. I hope it's the last time they do that...

if you followed the storyline (i.e. Sean telling there will be no third time, meaning there's no time for another re-do) i doubt they will do that again

I watched the entire first season in a day heading to and from London on Monday. I absolutely loved this. I thought it was well done and entertaining

I'm getting caught up on season 2 now, but OH MY GOD Janet's repeated deaths in episode 3... I was on the verge of needing MEDICAL HELP

Posted by: Styles Bilinski Oct 22 2017, 11:41 AM

I've made my way through season 1 over the past few days and everything about it is AMAZING (well, maybe not Jason/Janet, I wasn't feeling that so much). Proper laugh out loud funny and I love the concept.

I think Janet is the best character really but I love how big a role Jameela has and she has not disappointed heart.gif May crush a little on Jianyu too. Can't wait to dive into season 2 and hope it doesn't begin to feel too stale

I was sold from the first episode though and think each episode delivers more of the same so if anyone isn't feeling it after a couple of episodes, I'm not sure further episodes will change things unsure.gif

Posted by: ᴄᴀɴɴɪ Oct 22 2017, 03:00 PM

See I am a couple of episodes into season 2 and I am a bit bored of it still, although I did reallt enjoy the lead up to the finale and the twist was really well done, I didn't see it coming ohmy.gif Its one of those shows where I can only watch a couple of episodes at a time, then I leave for ages then go back to. Janet is also my fave, Jianyu is adorable too so I didn't mind that pairing laugh.gif Tahani has grown on me a lot but Chidi and Eleanor still annoy me so much :')

Posted by: JosephStyles Oct 27 2017, 11:38 PM

Finished this within three days, absolutely hooked! Some thoughts ~

- Love the concept, it's unique and exciting on its own even without the comedy element I think
- I like the cast overall, although I guess I'm biased when it comes to Tahani so she's my fave x
- Janet is brilliant also, echoing the love for her in here
- The twist at the end of season 1 was BRILLIANT, I didn't see it coming at all and it played out so well
- Season 2 continuing to be fab thus far *.*

HOLY FORKING SHIT THE END OF SEASON 1!!!!

For a comedy I'm STUNNED by that plot twist!

Posted by: Liаm Oct 31 2017, 03:00 AM

I've been cackling for 5 minutes at Tahani calling a female plumber a "clog wench" rotf.gif

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Nov 4 2017, 10:38 AM

Janet is the absolute bomb. What a fantastic character.

This is such a magnificent show and I am deeply enjoying it. One of the best American comedies of recent years for sure

Posted by: Klaus Nov 4 2017, 12:23 PM

Watched the first season of this! So much plot for a comedy, I think it really helps to make it stand out! and that twist at the end, really didn't see it coming. ALTHOUGH, I had been confused at why Tahani was in The Good Place because she was a bit of a bitch.

Janet is just iconic. She could have been a character that we've seen all before but I think a mixture of the scenario, writing and the actress helps to elevate it to a really great character.

Posted by: Cameron Nov 4 2017, 12:25 PM

Janet has really made season 2. I just find myself cackling at her constantly! I am loving how well this is developing too

Posted by: Liаm Nov 6 2017, 07:32 PM

Janet is legit one of the best characters in anything ever.

Posted by: Jay ☆ Nov 10 2017, 12:44 AM

Just binge watched every episode over 3 days. I really enjoyed this, so glad I gave it a chance!

Echoing others - Janet is a hoot! laugh.gif Loving her character development as it’s gone along, and I adore her deadpan delivery. :’) Really love Tahani too... not just because she’s Jameela ( kink.gif ); it didn’t actually take me long to get over the fact it was Jameela and I just started to see her as Tahani.

Season 1’s twist was everything, I really didn’t see it coming! I read a commentary afterwards that highlighted a number of clues that are scattered throughout the first season that subtly pointed to all not being as it seemed. Extremely well done!

Now I’m sad.gif that we’ve got to wait for a few weeks now for new episodes.

Posted by: Cameron Nov 10 2017, 08:31 PM

It's not back until January! I am devastated!

Posted by: JosephStyles Nov 11 2017, 06:20 PM

I didn't even realise, I went looking for a new episode yesterday and was gutted when there wasn't one sad.gif

Posted by: Klaus Nov 12 2017, 12:13 PM

I didn't realise either!! Perhaps I should have spread them out more kink.gif

NBC are airing football on Thursdays or some garbage like that so all their Thursday shows are off the air until Jan :/

Posted by: Jack Nov 22 2017, 11:45 AM

Series 1 has been amazing, loved it, one of my fave series of this year.

Series 2 however ... such a huge decline in quality so far (I'm on episode 3), there doesn't seem to be any point or direction, I don't really see where they're going with it at all. sad.gif

Posted by: Jay ☆ Jan 7 2018, 09:58 AM

wub.gif Glad it's back! It's going to be weird having to wait a week for each episode, rather than being able to binge watch a few episodes a day. ohmy.gif

Janet drunk on magnets. :')

Posted by: Klaus Jan 7 2018, 10:41 AM

Good to have this back, although not sure where it’s going to go from here! I’m sure they’ll have plenty of tricks up their sleeve though.

Agree with Jay though, going to be so weird not binging this and having to wait a week each episode!

Posted by: Cameron Jan 19 2018, 12:18 PM

Today's episode was so good, I really want it to be longer than 22 mins!

I predict that the 4 of them are going to find each other unknowingly in the real world and work together to do something good for Eleanor’s charity and Tahani will throw a party or something and they’ll get into the good place 😂

Just finished this, and yeah, I agree with the idea that they don’t seem to know where they’re going with this at all, I feel like each seasons gonna end up feeling like a sort of rehash of the previous one, but I guess if it’s still fun I can’t complain

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Feb 3 2018, 01:22 PM

I actually really liked the second season, probably a little bit more than the first. I loved the twists and turns and the Trolley problem episode had me in stitches.

Really very curious to see how they develop the show from here.

For me this has to be on of the best shows from the past couple of years

That would be awesome! And I agree, it does feel like they'll come into each others lives someway or another. Really can't wait to see how they manage to wind Jason into the thread they've started.

Feels like Elenor is the central thread that improves all of them and thus gets them all into the Good Place

Whatever happens, it feels already like Season 3 has a lot of promise.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Feb 3 2018, 02:12 PM

So I started this series a few weeks back as the concept intrigued me - Season 1 was one of the best first seasons of a comedy I've seen in a long time, so much development, brilliant characterisations, moral points and shock twists that all worked so well, I was srsly impressed.

Season 2 has certainly been a bit of a step down (although the second episode with the constant reboots had me howling), but it's a little hard to follow such a concept and I think they've done some great character development, just perhaps a little focus on the romances would do it better.

The finale, as good as it was, did signify that this wouldn't work as a really long running show as it did seem a bit overly familiar, but it at least kept things going and I will still definitely be watching a season 3. Bear in mind we still haven't seen what the ACTUAL (omg that Jameelaism wasn't even intended but ha) good place is like so surely that would be something to touch on next time, I'm hoping there's a little bit more to it than just a fabled heaven land

Posted by: ionderella Feb 3 2018, 08:59 PM

i don't think they will ever show either good or bad place in the future. or it will be something very abstract.

either way i LOVED the final two episodes, as well as the entire season. so much development and amazing twists. kristen is obviously one incredible scene stealer but i am LIVING for janet (TOTALLY saw the 'bad janet is good janet' twist coming!) and maya *.* hopefully there will be more of the judge in season 3.

this might be the most intelligent and funniest sitcom of the recent years.

I loved season 2 just as much as season 1. Not sure why people think they don't know where they're going with this. However, I do think they should wrap this up with Season 4, it's not one of those comedies that can go on forever. Also, I hope we get a glimpse of the actual Good Place next season.

Posted by: Lindsey 🙃 Sep 10 2018, 01:16 PM

I finally finished this last week after bingeing season 2, idk why i struggled to get into it before :') I love the direction they're taking it in and it's going to be so interesting to see how they all cross paths in their real lives given how different they all are. I'm here for Chidi and Eleanor now, such cuties who genuinely make each other better people, so I'm well aboard that ship. Unsure about Jason and Tahani though, they feel a little too forced together for convenience?? Wish we'd seen the full version of the reboot where Tahani was Eleanors soulmate though kink.gif

This is absolute SHITE

It reminds me of that programme with Rachel's sister from Friends, the one who wanted the baby. She had amnesia and they had flashbacks to ''bitch' moments. It comes off as contrived and like they couldn't find a way to fit a funny moment into the storylune.

This is ham fisted, cheesy, and with the worst set of characters I have ever seen. Hi I am going to bore you about philosophy whilst being a goody goody whilst forcing myself onto you as your soulmate skweeee! Hi I am a monk WHO DOES NOT SPEAK. Hi! I am the controller with a MESS of a personality. Terrrrible.

Unless they go back to earth and away from that fake ass set, I am not interested. Whose idea was it to have a teeny tiny computerised set with a limited number of characters?

The jokes too man aliiive. Embarrassing death ... trolleys into a penis enlargement truck. Yaaawn.

This

It's such a ham-fisted, stupid show. It is unfunny, forced, completely contrived, with the cheapest storylines it can find. The characters are terrible. Chidi is the worst character in YEARS. I'd say only the Cleveland Show bears come close, or Stuart from EE. He is such an insufferable bore - philosophy, moaning, stating the obvious, hanging around to say how good he was in life.

The cut aways do not work and are ENTIRELY derivative and contrived, amped up but yet so flat with as bitchy as situations as they can think of to highlight how oh so unsuitable she is for this cheesy af 'paradise'.

Is it paradise, or just American fantasy, to have a STRANGER enter your house and say I'm your soulmate surpriiiiiiseeee? Soulmate surpriiiiiseee! SOOOULMERRT SERPRERRRSSEEE! Anddd then live in a TIIIINY, supposedly eventless, town with 300 people for ETERNITY? ETERNITY. They sounded bored by the storylines and painful dialogue two days in. They should be glad someone is there that shouldn't be to give themselves something to react to!

Also tough shit if you want to use um ALL OF ETERNITY in a tiny plastic bubble learning languages. Oops. Translaaated!

The most recent episode omg, one for the Janet lovers aka everyone!

Definitely my favourite ep of a more weaker season. The actress who plays Janet was really amazing!

Posted by: Brett-Butler Dec 9 2018, 12:01 PM

I hope D'Arcy gets some awards recognition for that last episode. Playing 5 characters at the same time and making them all recognisably distinct takes some acting chops. Nice to see Stephen Merchant popping up as well, was a bit of a surprise to see him in the previous episode.

Posted by: Liаm Dec 9 2018, 12:50 PM

I think that was my favourite episode of the entire show so far, let alone just S3! Another good twist and Janet mania was iconic *.* I was howling at D'arcy doing every character, she nailed each one and NEEDS an Emmy for it. Not just that but Eleanor and Chidi finally, my heart cry.gif

The terrible parentis locum, preachy, regurgitating what he learned in a few uni Philosophy classes season 1 aside, this is pretty good. The less Chidi is in it and the more Jameela Jamil is in it, the better.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Dec 26 2018, 02:48 PM

Janet(s) is a remarkably good episode of TV. D’arcy Carden deserves all the awards for that

Is this show still meant to be a comedy because THAT FINALE I'M NEVER GOING TO STOP CRYING

Posted by: Klaus Jan 26 2019, 07:45 PM

~spoilers~

omg i didnt realise it was the final episode, I thought there was one more left! Stupid double premiere episode putting me off!

I don’t know, it’s a nice twist (and very happy to have Simone back!) but it wasn’t as shocking as the previous two finales. There’s probably more to come with it but we know that Eleanor and Chidi have got together in nearly all of the thousands of times they’ve met each other - although I guess it won’t be as natural this time with Eleanor being aware.

Is Chidi now one of the four new test ones then? It’s probably obvious that he is but didn’t the Judge say they couldn’t use those four again?

I am looking forward to being back in the fake Good Place though - it’s where the heart of the show lies

Posted by: Jack Jan 26 2019, 07:59 PM

I can't be the only one who can't abide Chidi right?? He literally goes right through me. Overall the series have felt fairly lacklustre, I'm looking forward to the next series though!

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Jan 26 2019, 09:27 PM

They always finish the seasons in really interesting ways, I can’t wait to see where they take it through season 4.

I still think we’ve got two more to come. I’m really interested to see who comes back for Elenor and Jason. Wonder what the odds on pill boy are?

Posted by: Liаm Jan 26 2019, 09:28 PM

I was thinking Eleanor's mum if Chidi didn't count as hers.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Jan 26 2019, 09:32 PM

Ooh that’s a good shout

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner Jun 8 2019, 09:10 AM

Season 4 will be the final season of TGP. They confirmed last night that they had elected to end the show after 54 episodes (14 episodes in season 4 apparently) and it will have an hour long finale.

Sad news but it’s going out on a creative high. They’ve storyboarded 4 seasons and about 50 episodes right from the start so it’s nice to see a show live out it’s full vision without being endlessly extended

Posted by: JosephAvery Jun 8 2019, 10:04 AM

That's my thoughts too, really sad to see it's ending but it's promising that they've got a clear vision and ending planned. Praying it delivers!!

Posted by: Klaus Jun 8 2019, 05:54 PM

I’m glad tbh, I don’t see the point in shows running for the sake of it and it kind of spoils the legacy of the show. I love it but this is one that definitely has a limited plot/story and I’m glad they’re following the plan they set out from the start!

It also allows Mike Schurr time to develop new shows kink.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jun 8 2019, 07:05 PM

I'm very glad to see this, Season 3 whilst still good in the latter half, was clearly showing signs that the concept was wearing thin and they were retreading paths hence why it took me so long to finish it! Plus it should make sure Season 4 feels like the properly emotional ending where everything is wrapped up.

Posted by: Big Boobs Vjay! Nov 16 2019, 02:01 PM

This got axed due to really really low ratings apparently, losing a million a season. That's what happens when you make scropts based on your college philosophy classes and turn each episode into a mini uni lecture on the subject!!

Posted by: Slick Nov 16 2019, 02:36 PM

I'm extremely late to this - I decided to give this show a go last month and watched all 3 (and a half) seasons within a couple of weeks. I really enjoy it and can't believe I was so late to the party.

I felt a bit lost during the last season at times but what a perfect finale! It was obvious that was what was going to happen when the door was mentioned last episode but they did it perfectly for each character. I just demand a Tahani as a Good Place architect spin-off.

Also I can't be the only one who bawled my eyes out at Chidi going through the door and that last Eleanor and Janet scene </3

That really was the perfect finale for the show. I ended up watching it as if it were two episodes because I was already crying about 25 minutes in, then was away by the end of the episode again. cry.gif laugh.gif

A Tahani architect spin-off would be iconic *.*

Definitely happy with that finale, or as happy as I can be anyway. The season was a little messy at times but it was all to tie up loose ends and the show still ended on such a high note! Each character had their proper final moment and I never would've picked Tahani as the only one to stay!

One nice thing about the show ending now is that it won't take that much time to go back and rewatch it all, I'm sure there's so many little hints that I've missed along the way.

That was a great ending for the show. It definitely lost a lot of it's spark for most of Seasons 3 & 4, even if there were lots of highlights still there but it was great in terms of tying up the character's stories and also the themes of the show. It was of course emotional and it all stayed true to their characters (particularly with Chidi & Eleanor, I loved their scenes!). Good to have Jason actually spend time being a monk too laugh.gif

It was certainly special show and sort of turned the mainstream sitcom format on it's head entirely (just like that Season 1 finale!!). I hope has/will inspired new shows to do something as similarly daring and different. I'm also very glad that it told the story it wanted to tell and ended, without truly overstepping it's welcome. As I said, I know Seasons 3 & 4 weren't as special but the narrative together made sense in terms of how it flowed and was able to lead to that finale. It would feel a cheat for them to end up in the actual good place at say the end of Season 2, had it ended there.

Perfect finale! I loved the first three seasons. Season 4 was the weakest, but I still liked it. Season 1 is better in retrospect, as I didn't like it till they decided to turn it on its head.

One question: what happened when they walked through the door? I think they were reincarnated, and that man was Elenor right? And M recognised her?

I just assumed it was them floating around touching into people's souls and making them better/good people, doing good deeds, etc. Didn't think about that. ohmy.gif

I don’t think that the man was her reincarnated but it’s likely her spirit or whatever that pushed him/it was her influence to give the letter to Michael as he originally wasn’t going to.

Posted by: A Capella Sally Feb 8 2020, 08:19 PM

I thought her essence was reincarnated, her consciousness, but her goodness, after becoming the best version of herself that she could be, dissipates out - and it touched a future incarnation of her consciousness, her as that man. She then saw Michael again, and he recognised her, showing the interconnected water and how we come across each other time and time again in different lives. And the reason why the people in the good place decide to go through the door is that they realise that self-gratification is nice and all, but they get bored of it eventually. They have become the best versions of themselves and want to spread goodness. Tahani goes and becomes an architect, whilst the rest dissavow their ego walk through the door and spread out more goodness, and their actual consciousness enters the cycle again.

Well, that's what I thought anyway!

I personally don’t think it went as far as reincarnation! I think Michael was just recognising the system was working and hopefully also recognised it was Eleanor in particular that was causing the good deed.

I guess it’s good that it’s open to that interpretation though!

ALTHOUGH! Saying that, in Buddhism, existence in itself is suffering, and that even the "gods", i.e those im an elevated plane of existence, i.e the good place, suffer. That's what we saw. What Nirvana is, therefore, is a STATE, and not a place, and it is a state of peace and ... non-being. This could be what the door was, and note they get it after reaching INNER PEACE and in becoming the highest ideals of themselves. In Jason's case, it followed years of LITERALLY sitting under trees and meditating.

Finally got round to finishing this, a good ending, definitely felt very fitting giving them all closure and though there wasn't a lot happened, there didn't need to be as they achieved their goal, and the concept of the good place not being a permanent thing was good as that was the last quandary they hadn't solved

I am glad it's finished though, this show was great, had some excellent moments and a great reflection on afterlife and morality, but S3 & 4 were a bit of a slog at times, it led up to a good ending, but I do wish it could've been condensed a little bit.

Also, LIVING for Jason actually becoming a Buddhist monk and Chidi becoming decisive!

I guess the only way it could end was us following Eleanor's perspective through the door, but I wish she had stayed. She could have become an architect/ Good Place joint head with Michael, and then taking over from him. She could have hung out with Mindy and Tahani. Also, wth at Tahani being the only one NOT to go through?! She got the ending I expected Eleanor to get. But it makes sense. For many Jeremys in the afterlife, and on earth, she thought her hosting skills were meaningless, but they got meaning in the end because she gave them meaning by using them for a higher purpose - helping people by becoming an architect. She also had thousands of failed Michael tries to help! She had a lot of knowledge, and so would easily become one.

The ending really does square up with Buddhism, even to the feeling of completeness and emptiness before entering the door.

Loved Phoebe from Friends too and the way they just sidestepped a historical/ linguistic debate!

Also, the finale ended up more philosophical than the entire show. Tahani and her sister wanted to spend quality time with their parents. They expected them to come as they were on earth, critical and eith drama. But they gor domestic bliss. They then realised they had it best on earth with all the grittiness and realness, and that the heavenly vision was a little false in comparison to what they knew.
