HUGE HUGE thanks to Jay for all the information here! It's all still a work in progress, will keep you all updated as to when this is finished.

I never understood HOW ON EARTH did "See the day" got #1 on the radio airplay chart! huh.gif
It was the third single off a not really successfull album, a rather bland cover, and they were so unpopular on radio at the time (even "Biology" bombed on airplay), so it's just so weird to see "See the day" getting heavy rotation... Is there a particular reason?
I guess it had some Christmas appeal but not to the point to get that much airplay. "I'll stand by you" was a massive hit and and it had the Comic Relief appeal, yet it didn't even get close to #1 on the airplay chart.
Such an oddity!

Yeah I'm gonna guess at it just being released at an "appropriate" time of year, and having a Christmassy sound to it. Otherwise, I really don't know. laugh.gif It's very strange but their general lack of huge radio support makes the 21 top 10 hits out of 23 thing seem even MORE impressive.

Posted by: -Jay- 23rd April 2014, 11:24 AM

It got to #6 on radio, not #1! #1 was on TV. Still, both rather great peaks. I'm sure it must have helped out 'Chemistry' over the Christmas period though. Perhaps 'Chemistry' would have been even lower in the album charts without 'See The Day' doing well in the two airplay charts. ohmy.gif

All up to date! Again, if you have any corrections, please post them and I'll be happy to fix!

Posted by: liamk97 23rd April 2014, 10:30 PM

It's always surprised me how underwhelming Girls Aloud generally performed on the radio airplay chart pre-'Call the Shots'. Even popular hits like 'Love Machine', 'Biology' and 'Something Kinda Ooh'. At least TV has always been on board - seems that airplay was much more influential back then.

Posted by: JosephTheVamps 23rd April 2014, 10:45 PM

I've always found it very odd, but it just makes their success look even more impressive I think - biggest girl group of the 21st century yet radio barely touched them!

Posted by: Joe‽assmore 28th April 2014, 09:27 AM

SHOCKED at the radio airplay. I had no idea it was so bad. How did all their albums go platinum?!

Posted by: Hayzayy 28th April 2014, 10:08 AM

So how many singles/albums have they sold?
That's over 3 millions each right?

Posted by: JosephTheVamps 28th April 2014, 11:21 AM

3,943,000 single sales going by the estimates in here (rounded to the nearest 1,000 where necessary)! That's obviously excluding many trickle sales since the last totals, as well as any album tracks that have been purchased, so they're well over 4 million singles I'm sure.

4,060,000 albums, not counting The Collection, and again missing any trickle sales since the last estimates.

Posted by: Hayzayy 28th April 2014, 12:01 PM

Oooh that's amazing wub.gif

If anyone's interested in any international chart runs for Girls Aloud or their individual singles/albums, I've now uploaded them all here: http://girlsalouddiscography.weebly.com/ Huge thanks to Jay for the info! The only one lacking right now is Kimberley's chart positions outside the top 100 and any airplay/international runs for her (but that won't be much at all lol)

Posted by: OutstandingMixer 16th June 2014, 11:38 PM

I know I'm being really pedantic here but I noticed you have 'Fight For This Love' first week sales as 292,845 when it should be 292,846. You also have 'Promise This' first week sales as 157,208 when it should be 157,210.

http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=120013

Posted by: -Jay- 17th June 2014, 11:53 AM

Hmm, the reason for those sales being listed is because they're from the Top 200 sales lists emailed within the music industry (which I had a source for, at the time kink.gif ), which stated:

NEW 1 157208 N/A PROMISE THIS CHERYL COLE POLYDOR
NEW 1 292845 N/A FIGHT FOR THIS LOVE CHERYL COLE FASCINATION

... and I never noticed that what Music Week stated in their articles was slightly different. I'm not really sure why there's differences of 1 and 2 sales!

Posted by: liamk97 30th August 2014, 01:19 PM

Official first week sales for 'Love Machine: 35,828 (http://scans.chartarchive.org/UK/2004/UK%20Charts%202004.10.02.pdf - see the narrative for 'Call On Me')

'Call On Me' had a lead of 32,310 and sold 68,138 copies itself when 'Love Machine' debuted, which works out as 35,828 for Girls Aloud.

Posted by: -Jay- 30th August 2014, 04:38 PM

Thank you! biggrin.gif 35,828 were fairly reasonable sales for a #2 back in 2004 I think. It's a pity they ran into Eric Prydz's huge hit, but then again GA wouldn't have made it to #1 with those sales in many other weeks of '04 anyway. However it was 393 sales more than Brian McFadden needed for #1 a week earlier!

It's a shame that sales were so low across 2003-7ish, because some of their totals seem a bit floppy in today's terms. At least a few more of their singles have managed to go Silver in recent years. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Joe. 1st September 2014, 01:54 PM

Such a shame singles like The Show, Biology and No Good Advice never made silver, despite being successful singles with decent chart runs at the time... sad.gif

Something New though...I still don't know what happened there...

I wish we could have some new updates. sad.gif I know we've had a few over the last couple of years, but there's some I'd love to know the updated sales for, particularly Call The Shots and Something Kinda Ooooh.

Most recent updates:

210,000 - Love Machine [September 2014]
160,000 - The Loving Kind [August 2014]
536,700 - The Promise [November 2013]
250,000 - Jump [November 2013]
200,000(+) - Can't Speak French [July 2013] {Known due to BPI updating certifications}
660,000 - Sound Of The Underground [February 2013]
165,000 - Biology [October 2012]

Sales not updated since April 2010 (to the best of my knowledge):
Call The Shots / Something Kinda Ooooh / I'll Stand By You / No Good Advice / Walk This Way / Sexy! No No No... / Untouchable / Life Got Cold / Wake Me Up / See The Day / Long Hot Summer

Sales not updated since June 2009:
The Show / I Think We're Alone Now / Whole Lotta History

I have an estimate of 155,000 for 'Something New' as of March 2013 but I'm not sure if there's been any more recent estimations. I guestimated 15,000 sales for 'Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me' as of January 2013.

Cheryl & Girls Aloud’s Official Top 20 Biggest Selling Singles Revealed!
08/11/2014
By Justin Myers

As Cheryl prepares to release album number four, we rank her solo hits against her Girls Aloud classics and see which tracks come out on top. Is she really better off alone?

This week is a big week for Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, or Cheryl as we like to call her in the pop biz.

After a two-year wait and two massive singles before it, Mrs Fez-Vez is finally ready to release her fourth solo album, Only Human. But as Cheryl celebrates five years as a solo artist, we couldn’t help but wonder: have Cheryl’s singles sold more than her Girls Aloud hits?

Well, luckily, we have all the details at our fingertips , because we are, of course the only chart that counts. And so we had a look in our vaults. And now we can tell you, by way of an amazing Top 20 that doesn’t have a duff track on it. But first… the Top 5!

1: Cheryl – Fight For This Love

In an amazing coincidence, Fight For This Love was Number 1 exactly five years ago today. We’ve had an in-depth look at this tune’s progress, but all you need to know is that as a million seller it is Cheryl’s bestselling song. It was Number 1 for two weeks and sold super-speedily – 430,000 of you bought it in its first two weeks on sale. Cheryl may well have thought going solo wasn’t “gon’ be no picnic”, but she didn’t do too badly with this deceptively dancey R&B number.

SALES: A cool million

CHART FACT: Cheryl only went and knocked her very own X Factor protégée Alexandra Burke off the top spot. Cheryl was then herself booted off Number 1 by another X Factor act – JLS!

2: Girls Aloud – Sound Of The Underground

The song that started it all for Cheryl – and Nadine, Nicola, Kimberley and Sarah too, of course – this was the Official Christmas Number 1 of 2002 and beat the girls’ Popstars: The Rivals competitors One True Voice into second place. Sound Of The Underground – the beginning of a career-long love affair for Girls Aloud with producers Xenomania – stayed at the summit for four weeks until it was given the heave-ho by another talent show winner – Fame Academy’s David Sneddon.

SALES: 665,000

CHART FACT: Four weeks was Girls Aloud’s longest run at the top spot. Sound Of The Underground was the first of four Number 1 singles for the group.

3: Girls Aloud – The Promise

From the song that began their great chart story to one that came pretty near the end, The Promise was a huge hit for Girls Aloud as they prepared to release their fifth and final studio album Out Of Control. Part ‘60s girlband-pastiche, part Blankety Blank theme tune (in the best possible way), The Promise stayed at Number 1 for a week, almost exactly six years ago today!

SALES: 540,000

CHART FACT: The Promise also fell victim to the curse of The X Factor – it was booted off Number 1 by The X Factor finalists’ cover of Mariah Carey’s Hero. Take a look at the full Top 40 from the week The Promise was at Number 1.

4: Cheryl – Call My Name

With Calvin Harris on board, there wasn’t much chance of this track not being a monster hit. Cheryl’s second biggest seller was a Number 1 hit for her in 2012.

SALES: 450,000

CHART FACT: Call My Name was originally earmarked for Rita Ora, but she didn’t think it was her thing. Rita had three Number 1s in 2012, and along with Cheryl and Geri Halliwell, holds the record for most Number 1 singles by a British female solo artist. Selling over 150,000 copies in its first week on sale, Call My Name was the fastest selling single of 2012 until James Arthur’s Impossible came along in December.

5: Cheryl – Promise This

And another Cheryl song means that the majority of the Top 5 belongs to Mrs Fez-Vez. Promise This was the lead single from what you might call Cheryl’s sophomore album, Messy Little Raindrops, and spent a week at Number 1 in 2010, giving Chezza a second solo chart-topper.

SALES: 430,000

CHART FACT: Promise This was knocked off Number 1 by Rihanna’s million-selling Only Girl (In The World).

Other notable entries

The top selling song on our chart not to hit Number 1 is Cheryl’s Parachute, in sixth place. It peaked at Number 5 in 2009 and has sold 400,000 copies.

Girls Aloud’s top selling non-Number 1 is 2007’s Call The Shots, a Number 4 hit, selling 325,000 copies and landing eighth on our overall countdown.

Cheryl’s 2014 Number 1 Crazy Stupid Love is already her sixth bestselling solo single, and breaks into our Top 10 here, with over 280,000 copies sold.

Girls Aloud’s other Number 1s also put in an appearance in this Top 20, with 2004’s I’ll Stand By You popping up in 13th place with over 230,000 copies sold.

Up in 20th and only just edging No Good Advice out of the countdown by a mere 400 copies is the girls’ team-up with Sugababes, Walk This Way. The charity cover of the Run DMC/Aerosmith track spent a week at Number 1 and was a third chart-topper for Girls Aloud, but a fifth for Sugababes, who by then had welcomed Amelle into the group to replace Mutya. It’s sold over 140,000 copies.

Classics that didn’t make it

The download era means that Cheryl’s solo material had a better chance of making the Top 20 – and quite right too. It’s bad news for Girls Aloud tracks like Sexy No No No (24), The Show (25) and Wake Me Up (28). They are, of course, still brilliant.

Posted by: Jay ジ 25th March 2015, 01:14 AM

Good question and unfortunately I'm not sure! As far as I know download sales only started to contribute officially to overall totals from April 2005. So there is a chance that download data for Love Machine before that wasn't added on.

Might be a question for the UK chart forum!

OCC reveal Girls Aloud sold 4.4m singles and 4.1m albums (they confirm these figures exclude streams). Sarah's song 'Threads' has yet to pass the 2k mark! :')

http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/cbb-2017-sarah-harding-and-amelia-lilys-chart-stats-and-biggest-singles-revealed__19832/

I wish they had been a bit more accurate with the singles total figure instead of (presumably) rounding it to the nearest 100k! In October 2012 they tweeted that GA had sold 4.3m singles... so technically the new figure of 4.4m only suggests a 100k rise in almost 5 years. We know that Something New sold 175,000 pure sales (as of Nov '16), before taking into account BCYLM (20k?) & the rest of their back catalogue - so surely they've exceeded 200k pure sales over the past 5 years? The only way it'd make some sort of sense is if they'd rounded up to achieve the 4.3m figure last time, and if they have rounded down to 4.4m this time.

As of March 2013, the 5 studio albums had sold 2,658,000 combined, TSOGA 1,200,000 & Ten 156,000 = 4,014,000. (If you included Mixed Up & Girls A Live*, then an additional ~35k = approximately 4,050,000). Ten still had a bit of life left in it in 2013 and had risen to 167,290 by October 2013. It would stand to reason that the majority of their sales achieved over the past few years come from Ten, but we don't know whether OCC have rounded up or down to arrive at 4.1m so it's hard to estimate what Ten's total could be on now!

* I wonder if OCC's 4.1m total includes these two miscellaneous albums?

Poor Threads! :') Most of that figure surely comes from the CDs!

Posted by: Jay ☆ 20th August 2017, 06:11 PM

Didn't spot this in the Sarah/Amelia Lily article originally, but Sound of the Underground is stated as being on 715,000 now, and the Out of Control album is revealed as 800,000.

Including streams, I'm guessing? Great to see updated figures for songs we haven't received in a while and it's pleasing to know 'Biology' isn't that far off Silver - it's one of their most known and celebrated hits and Chemistry needs a certified single!

I reckon 'The Promise' isn't too far away from Platinum either, streams included.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 15th September 2017, 12:26 PM

Seemingly so re: streaming!

Here are their last known sales:

165,000 - Biology (October 2012) [+25,660 in 4 years & 9 months]
160,000 - The Loving Kind (August 2014) [+11,200 in 2 years & 11 months]
98,955 - The Show (June 2009) [+15,469 in 8 years & 1 month]

Such a small increase for The Show... cry.gif

Posted by: Seinfeld 15th September 2017, 01:00 PM

'Something New' must be very close to Silver now! biggrin.gif

Jay, haven't you always disputed that 99k figure for the 'The Show'?! I remember you saying it should be higher, which probably means the 114k figure is incorrect as well...

Posted by: Jay ☆ 15th September 2017, 01:18 PM

^ The guy who posted lots of different artist sales on BuzzJack originally gave it as 76,090, but then corrected it to 98,955, thankfully!

So hopefully the new 114k figure is right? thinking.gif

The Show's sales always seem to be a problem though, for instance:

- MTV aired a "Girls Aloud Top 20" programme in April 2010 & stated that The Show had sold 175,000 and was their 9th best seller... which was definitely wrong.
- http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/girls-aloud-crowned-the-biggest-selling-girl-group-of-the-21st-century__2472/ published a Top 20 in October 2010, and had The Show in 17th - below I Think We're Alone Now & Life Got Cold, which seemed unlikely to me.

More sales! As of 15th Sep:

578,145 - The Promise
149,992 - No Good Advice

Hmm, might take a while yet for The Promise to go platinum!

Posted by: liamk97 21st September 2017, 10:24 PM

Really pleasing to see these new sales snippets coming through with streams included! There's something so satisfying in seeing a precise figure rather than a rounded one.

Here's what we have so far:

715,000 Sound of the Underground [August 2017]
150,000 No Good Advice [September 2017]
Life Got Gold
Jump

114,000 The Show [September 2017]
Love Machine
I'll Stand By You
Wake Me Up
Long Hot Summer

191,000 Biology [September 2017]
See the Day
Whole Lotta History
Something Kinda Ooh
I Think We're Alone Now
Walk This Way
Sexy! No No No...
Call the Shots
Can't Speak French

578,000 The Promise [September 2017]
171,000 The Loving Kind [September 2017]
Untouchable
189,000 Something New [November 2016]

Thanks for the "list so far" Liam! *.* Hopefully there will be more to come. cool2.gif

It's a shame that sales lower than 200k seems so awful these days because of how much streaming has inflated things. GA have at least 8 singles that are currently stuck in the 100,000 to 199,999 range. cry.gif Thankfully Biology & Something New should become silver in the not too distant future... I wouldn't like to guess how long either will take though. drama.gif

Posted by: liamk97 21st September 2017, 11:39 PM

Fingers crossed!

Yeah, I agree, seeing songs uncertified just automatically feels like a flop due to how literally every hit single passes Silver with such ease nowadays.

I think that once 'Biology' is certified, that'll be all of their biggest hits with a certification.

Posted by: Seinfeld 22nd September 2017, 12:52 AM

It's a shame the majority of their singles were released in such a crappy sales climate! cry.gif

'No Good Advice' felt like a very big hit at the time but it's only sold 150k. I guess its Top 40 run was on the short side (just 6 weeks) but it did spend 14 weeks inside the Top 75, and 23 weeks inside the Top 100 (more than SOTU!). Despite having a good run inside the Top 100, it wouldn't have sold much between the 76-100 positions. It was the 56th biggest song of 2003 but it felt like a bigger hit to me. sad.gif

NGA also seems to be forgotten these days (probably why it's such a low trickle seller!). sleep.gif

A summary of all the most recent sales we have - including a new figure for Call the Shots!

The date at the beginning is when the sales are from, i.e. 2017/12 means December 2017.

[2017/12] 726,000 - Sound of the Underground
[2017/09] 578,145 - The Promise

[2010/04] 65,000 - Long Hot Summer
[2009/06] 52,081 - Whole Lotta History

A pity that a lot of these sales are from so long ago. cry.gif

I wonder which will come first - The Promise going Platinum, or Biology going Silver?

Previous update for Call the Shots was 325,000 as of November 2014.

Posted by: Seinfeld 26th March 2018, 09:30 AM

Thanks for the update Jay - nice to see Call The Shots is slowly but surely approaching 400k! laugh.gif

So Biology and The Promise will be the next certifications, and perhaps The Loving Kind and then Call The Shots?

I reckon Jump and Something Kinda Ooooh are well over 300k now, and I'll Stand By You and Love Machine are probably over 250k.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 11th June 2018, 10:20 PM

Two new updates *.*

311,928 - Something Kinda Ooooh
292,827 - Love Machine

An increase of...

...almost 83,000 for Love Machine since September 2014 (3 years, 9 months)
...almost 67,000 for Something Kinda Ooooh since April 2010 (8 years, 2 months)

biggrin.gif

Seinfeld you must be right about Jump being over 300k! I reckon it will have a higher total than SKO considering Jump's streaming is stronger.

Posted by: liamk97 11th June 2018, 11:41 PM

Wow at 'Love Machine' when compared to 'Something Kinda Ooh'! Both are classic, big Girls Aloud hits but I think it highlights just how much of a signature hit 'Love Machine' is and how it is viewed and appreciated by the wider audience.

Great to see that they have 6 songs near enough passed the 300k mark. Feels slightly more reflective of their impact.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th June 2018, 05:28 PM

Agreed! I'm glad some of their sales are looking somewhat more healthy. It's such a shame that their heyday occurred at a time when physicals were on their way out and downloads were only beginning to take off. Nowadays a Silver certification isn't a big deal, yet it really was an indicator of a big hit in the mid 2000s. laugh.gif

Love Machine ended 2004 on total sales of just 94,000 - which obviously looks jarringly low compared to figures we're used to seeing these days. It was the 49th best seller of 2004... the 49th best seller of 2017 sold 615,000! drama.gif

Obviously it's impossible to directly compare the charts of then with now... but I'd say in terms of how big Love Machine felt back then & its endurance as one of their signature hits, in comparison to today's sales levels, it does feel like it should be a Platinum certified single.

~

I wonder how close in sales I'll Stand By You and Can't Speak French are? CSF's 200k figure from July 2013 is only based on the fact it received a silver certification by default when BPI decided to change their rules - so we don't know exactly when it crossed 200k. It was on 185,000 in April 2010. I'll Stand By You's 234k from November 2016 is without streaming. I would assume that ISBY is still ahead.

I also hope that Biology isn't too far away from becoming silver certified, then they'll have 10 certified singles!

Posted by: Joe. 13th June 2018, 10:24 AM

Love Machine is featured on 'Get Home Happy' which is advertised on Spotify daily, which is getting it a lot of streams (as well as 'Cheesy Hit' and 'Best of British'). I wish a couple more of their past hits were featured on some of the official playlists. The Saturdays 'Ego' and 'Higher' benefited from this hugely, too. I'm happy 'Love Machine' at least is getting the streams. But I wish it was 'Call The Shots', 'The Promise' and 'Biology' which were getting some decent streams too to get them closer to their certifications. The fact 'Biology' has never been certificated is a crime - it's their only big memorable hit that hasn't got one!

Here's a list of the Platinum, Gold & Silver selling singles, achieved within each calendar year, 2002 - 2012 (i.e. Girls Aloud's year of formation, to the year of their final single release):

2002: Silver - 39 / Gold - 13 / Platinum - 5
2003: Silver - 23 / Gold - 3 / Platinum - 1
2004: Silver - 16 / Gold - 2 / Platinum - 1
2005: Silver - 14 / Gold - 4 / Platinum - 2
2006: Silver - 15 / Gold - 3 / Platinum - 2
2007: Silver - 26 / Gold - 3 / Platinum - 1
2008: Silver - 52 / Gold - 10 / Platinum - 2
2009: Silver - 89 / Gold - 27 / Platinum - 8
2010: Silver - 105 / Gold - 32 / Platinum - 11
2011: Silver - 114 / Gold - 40 / Platinum - 15
2012: Silver - 110 / Gold - 39 / Platinum - 16

2008 was certainly the beginning of increasing sales thanks to the rise in popularity of downloads. As mentioned by Seinfeld, The Promise sold 349k in 2008 alone, and was the 17th best seller of the year. That was achieved in just 10 weeks of availability (Chart Run: 1-2-3-6-7-10-15-20-19-14...). For the time, that was certainly "massive hit" territory, for it to sell that much in a short time.

As can be seen above, only two singles went platinum within 2008 - those being X Factor Finalists 'Hero' (the programme's first release for charity), and Alexandra Burke's Hallelujah (X Factor winners single). So achieving Platinum still wasn't commonplace (and as can be seen, hadn't been for a number of years). Duffy's massive hit Mercy was the third best seller of 2008, which accumulated 535,000 sales in ten and a half months.

So, 2008 was just a bit too soon for "Platinum within the year of release" to be a likely outcome for "ordinary" singles. By the end of 2009, The Promise had sold just under 482,000 - enough to make it the 100th best selling single of the 2000s decade. Highly respectable sales for the era! To make up the 118,000 sales it needed to go Platinum has proven to be a bit of a slog, but really there was no particular reason for it to continue to sell very well on downloads from 2010 onward, and by the time streaming data started to be included in 2014, it was a 6 year old hit by a defunct girl group who were only really majorly successful in the UK (which isn't very helpful in terms of global streaming services). So it kind of figures that it's taken this long to claw its way to Platinum.

It's certainly a shame that Girls Aloud went on hiatus in 2009 from a commercial point of view, because they missed out on the major sales increases that occurred in 2009/2010/2011, which they really could have capitalised on with a couple more album eras. Girls Aloud's loss was Cheryl's gain, who definitely started her solo career at the optimum time!

Fight for This Love was unquestionably a much bigger single than The Promise, a phenomenon really (292,845 in its opening week, compared to The Promise's 77,110 - which is only a little over 25% the sales of Fight for This Love). It is worth noting that Fight for This Love also had a markedly better sales climate on its side than The Promise, even though it was just a year later. Not to put a dampener on The Promise though, because that 77k actually represented the highest weekly figure achieved in the 43 weeks of 2008 that had elapsed! It went on to be bettered by The X Factor Finalists - 'Hero', Leona Lewis - 'Run' and Alexandra Burke's 'Hallelujah' before the year came to an end.

Fight for This Love was the 4th best seller of 2009, with 745,738 copies sold in its 10 weeks of availability within that year. By the end of 2010 it was on a total of 935,000. A further two years saw it pass 1 million sales (December 2012), and as of September 2017 it had sold 1,097,754 [1,040,958 pure sales, 56,796 streaming sales], so we can assume it's exceeded 1.1m sales now.

While I'm on the subject of Cheryl... Call My Name sold 152,001 in its first week (about twice as much as The Promise's first week) and 421,200 by the end of 2012 (just under 7 months of availability). It passed 500,000 as of September 2017. Evidently it didn't quite have the staying power of The Promise.

I guess my main point of this lengthy post is that The Promise really was huge at the time but it wasn't really any surprise that it didn't make it close to Platinum during its time as a hit single - it managing to go Gold quite quickly was an incredible achievement. By the way, I'm not sure when Sound of the Underground crossed over 600k, but in June 2009 it was on 624,697. It was awarded Platinum in March 2003, but that was thanks to shipments. It sold 560,000 physically during its time in the chart from 2002-2004. Maybe it would have crossed over 600k sometime in 2008?

Wow, it's been a while since I wrote such a lengthy & chart geeky post! kink.gif

Jay and his charty/geeky posts x wub.gif

The Promise was definitely a huge hit. I just had a look to see what was the 17th biggest seller of 2017, and interestingly it was Touch by Little Mix. That sold around 920k last year: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=140270&view=findpost&p=3931083

I think that's a fair comparison. The Promise was probably a similar size hit to Touch, but slightly smaller than Black Magic and Shout Out To My Ex.

Oh I'm certainly not surprised it didn't go Platinum in its year of release, I know that was very rare - that's not what I meant at all. I'm just surprised that it took a decade! Lots of singles from that year have crossed platinum quite long before this did; Broken Strings, Hot N Cold, So What, Use Somebody, Run, Infinity, Viva La Vada, Greatest Day, Rockstar, Don't Stop the Music, If I Were A Boy, No Air, All Summer Long, The Man Who Can't Be Moved, Human, Distburbia - to name a handful, and the Promise felt just as big (if not bigger!) than a lot of those songs - (I know songs by Rihanna and Beyonce benefit hugely by the artists still being very active since). I'm not trying to put a negative spin on it and take anything away from the girls, they always seem a little hard done by when it comes to sales and seem very unlucky. Bit given they even came back 3 years later and promoted the song on TV again, toured and released a Greatest Hits, it does surprise me that they didn't get this cert 3 or 4 years earlier, that's all! I feel similar about Madonna's 4 Minutes which "only" just went Platinum too.

(When I Grow Upp and U only on Silver still despite feeling just as big as some of the above, too! - poor girl groups!)

A side note, I'd say The Promise felt just as big as Black Magic actually! Possibly not quite as big as Shout Out, which is why it's so annoying that they went on hiatus when they did!

Take this post with a pinch of salt, but I worked out some rough estimates of what some of their singles might be on now!

The methodology is a bit long-winded to explain, but I'll try... I did this based on how their songs tend to do on Spotify in comparison to each other, compared with The Promise's sales growth. I looked at the streams each single achieved between 13th March 2018 and 29th June 2018 (that info is in http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=99999&view=findpost&p=6028928). For instance, Something Kinda Ooooh managed 74.9% the number of streams than what The Promise achieved in that time (74.9277391% to be precise). The Promise sold 21,855 copies in 45 weeks, so 74.9277391% of that is 16,375 - so that would be the potential number of sales Something Kinda Ooooh might have managed in that same amount of time. Divide that by 315 (that's the number of days in 45 weeks), and then times that answer by 7, and that would show how much it might sell in a week on average = approx 364 sales. Of course this could be highly inaccurate, given there's so many variables that I'm unable to take into account. It's just a rough idea.

743,300 - Sound of the Underground
364,200 - Call The Shots
314,800 - Something Kinda Ooooh
299,700 - Love Machine
204,700 - Something New
200,800 - Biology
181,000 - The Loving Kind
153,300 - No Good Advice
118,700 - The Show

I only did these singles because we've had sales updates for them in either 2017 or 2018. It would be too difficult to work out older singles because the impact of streaming would have been a lot less in 2014-16, and for a few of the singles I'd have no idea what they've sold in downloads since their last updates in 2009/2010!

~~~~~
Here are some certification predictions (assuming that the above was 100% accurate & everything continued to grow at the rates I've worked out) -
The Loving Kind - Silver in July 2020
Sound of the Underground - 800,000 sales in July 2020 / 900,000 in February 2024 / 1,000,000 in September 2027
Love Machine - Gold in October 2020 (before Something Kinda Ooooh and Call the Shots, thus moving up to being their third best seller)
Call the Shots - Gold in April 2021
Something Kinda Ooooh - Gold in January 2023 (by the way, I assume that Jump could be on a similar sales figure to SKO at the moment, so might go Gold around the same time as this)
Love Machine - Platinum in April 2025 (while The Show and No Good Advice would still be nowhere near Silver kink.gif )
No Good Advice - Silver in September 2030. :') (Walk This Way kept pace with No Good Advice on pure sales and even achieves a similar level of streaming, so perhaps Walk This Way could go Silver at a similar time)
Anything could happen, of course... streaming could become even stronger than it currently is, Girls Aloud could reunite and thus create boosts across their back catalogue. Therefore the events I've listed above could happen more quickly. Equally other things could happen... perhaps streaming will weaken eventually (due to a future technology change?) or if OCC changes sales rules / BPI change certification levels.
We'll have to see in the future whether I end up being right about any of these lol. Let's hope the years don't go by too quickly, I'm really in no rush to find out any of this xx
Omg has Something New gone silver? Finally!!!! *.*
Unsurprisingly I find this kind of thing very interesting Jay kink.gif Fingers crossed for 2030 x
Thanks for the big chart posts, Jay! Always enjoy reading them. heart.gif
Woo at The Promise going Platinum! Very deserved and I guess gives the impression SOTU isn't their runaway best seller (that's not meant to be a dig, just that song has always had strong sales in comparison to the others despite other songs also having great significance and popularity and it's nice to now see one of them boost it sales passed such a prestigious mark).
So these are their biggest trickle sellers since June 2009 (I've excluded Something New). Jump is a bit of a rough estimate, I reckon it's probably around the 310k mark.
The Promise - 142,380
Love Machine - 111,650
Sound Of The Underground - 101,033
Jump - 87,589 (rough estimate)
Call The Shots - 82,163
Something Kinda Ooooh - 81,557
Can't Speak French - 67,409
Biology - 52,911
The Loving Kind - 38,056
Untouchable - 23,022 (pure sales)
No Good Advice - 17,075
Sexy! No No No... - 5,218 (pure sales)
See The Day - 1,366 (pure sales)
Life Got Cold - 322 (pure sales)
Obviously the figures for Untouchable, Sexy! No No No..., See The Day, Life Got Cold, I Think We're Alone Now and Whole Lotta History are way out of date as they haven't been updated since 2009/2010. Untouchable and SNNN aside, I doubt they've increased that much even with streaming added.
Yay! Great that all but two of their recent totals have been revealed within the past couple of years. Very pleased 'Jump' joins their 300k sellers.
Guess we can assume 'Life Got Cold' has sold over 100k and 'See the Day' is at ~90k then.
Yay! Glad to see some updates!
I feel like although singles sales were in the doldrums when they were at their peak and the sales aren't as representative of their impact, album sales were so healthy they made up for it on that front.
Posted by: Seinfeld 24th October 2018, 01:47 AM
I thought Jump would have been a bit higher than that. I imagine Love Machine is ahead of it now.
Posted by: Jay ☆ 24th October 2018, 04:23 AM
^ I had imagined that Jump would be a bit closer to SKO's sales (i.e. exceeding 310k), but I'm pleased to see it's exceeded 300k at least! heart.gif It was on 250k in November 2013, so that's almost 52k sales in 4 years, 11 months.
Posted by: Jay ☆ 24th October 2018, 06:28 AM
I was thinking about how some of Girls Aloud's singles were fairly unlucky to not peak higher than they did. It was usually because of poorly chosen release weeks, although there were a couple of bizarre release strategies that hindered them too. They also experienced some singles achieving higher midweek positions than where they ended up placing for the official chart.
I am a chart nerd, forgive me for this very pointless post that I expect none of you to read. kink.gif
QUOTE
No Good Advice - #2 entry/peak - 42,762 sales
29,598 sales behind #1: R Kelly 'Ignition Remix' - 72,360 sales
2 weeks earlier, #1: Tomcraft 'Loneliness' - 36,671 sales
3 weeks earlier, #1: Busted 'You Said No' - 41,000 sales
So 2 weeks earlier could have resulted in a comfortable #1 for them. I feel like this release would have stood to have achieved a better first week sale if they'd released CD1/CD2 formats, instead of CD/DVD. DVD singles were quite niche!
-----
Life Got Cold - #3 entry/peak - 31,963 sales
1 week later, #2: Blu Cantrell 'Breathe' - 31,000 sales (estimate)
Life Got Cold CD2 supposedly experienced distribution issues in the first week (I believe this to be true, because I remember not being able to find it until a week or so later!). Perhaps this single could have reached #2 rather than Lemar, if it hadn't have been for that. 'Dance (With U)' sold an estimated 33,000 copies to enter at #2, so it was pretty close between them.
One aspect of Life Got Cold peaking at #3 that is pretty cool though, is that it made Girls Aloud the first act to peak at #1, #2 and #3 with their first three releases!
-----
Jump - #2 entry/peak - 59,820 sales
8,800 sales behind #1: Westlife 'Mandy' - 68,620 sales
1 week earlier, #1: Busted 'Crashed The Wedding' - 55,088 sales
2 weeks earlier, #1: Kylie Minogue 'Slow' - 43,291 sales
Perhaps Busted & Britney Spears releases from the week before seemed like it would be too competitive, but Girls Aloud seemingly could have defeated them! Louis Walsh managed both Girls Aloud & Westlife at that time, so scheduling their releases together was certainly a conflict of interest... although I think we all know that Louis greatly favoured Westlife, haha.
-----
Love Machine #2 entry/peak - 35,828 sales
32,310 sales behind #1: Eric Prydz 'Call On Me' - 68,138 sales
1 week earlier, #1: Brian McFadden 'Real To Me' - 35,435 sales
That could have been a very close battle with Brian McFadden!
-----
Long Hot Summer #7 entry/peak - 18,451 sales
1 week earlier, #5: Iron Maiden 'The Trooper' - 14,726 sales
2 weeks earlier, #3: Craig David 'All The Way' - 14,883 sales | #4: Goldfrapp 'Ooh La La' - 14,745 sales | #5: Akon 'Belly Dancer' - 12,233 sales | #6: Ciara 'Oh' - Less than 10,000 sales
This was very unfortunate... most weeks of summer 2005 required far less sales to make the Top 5 or even the Top 3.
-----
Biology #4 entry/peak - 25,917 sales
2 weeks earlier, #2: Arctic Monkeys 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' - 22,986 sales | #3: Pharrell 'Can I Have It Like That' - 18,535 sales
1 week later, #2: Westlife 'You Raise Me Up' - 23,073 sales | #3: Black Eyed Peas 'My Humps' - 19,059 sales
Rather high sales required for Biology to make it to #4 in that week, whereas in other weeks it would have been more than enough to manage Top 3.
-----
See The Day #9 entry/peak - 20,000 sales (estimate)
In the same week, Coldplay at #10 sold 19,846. Unfortunately we never found out a precise figure for See The Day, but 20k+ was assumed and it might have been nearer 25k. See The Day's sales were likely helped along by it being released in Christmas week, so it probably would have sold less had it come out a week earlier - but potentially could have achieved a higher peak. Only 14,916 was required to be #8 a week earlier / 15,522 for #7 / 17,898 for #6 / 20,135 for #5 / 21,322 for #4.
-----
Something Kinda Ooooh - #3 peak [physical release week] - 42,114 sales
12,688 sales behind #1: McFly 'Star Girl' - 54,802 sales
4,782 sales behind #2: Fedde Le Grande 'Put Your Hands Up For Detroit' - 46,896 sales
1 week earlier, #1: My Chemical Romance 'Welcome to the Black Parade' - 29,201 sales
1 week later, #1: Fedde Le Grand 'Put Your Hands Up for Detroit' - 34,391 sales
Something Kinda Ooooh downloads were released 1 week before the physicals. It sold 14,308 downloads to enter at #5. If they'd opted to release the download and physicals together instead (which would have been a more conventional strategy), perhaps they would have defeated McFly and got to #1? Although that is assuming that those who downloaded it a week earlier would have still downloaded if forced to wait a week. Alternatively if the SKO CDs had been released a week earlier than they were, I assume GA would have easily beaten My Chemical Romance to #1.
It was also unlucky for SKO not to at least make it to #2. In both of the weeks in which it ended up placing at #3, it started out as being midweek #2.
-----
I Think We're Alone Now #4 peak [physical release week] - 20,857 sales
1 week earlier, #3: Gwen Stefani 'Wind It Up' - 17,706 sales
Like with See The Day, perhaps I Think We're Alone Now's sales were helped along by it being Christmas week.
-----
Sexy! No No No... #5 peak [physical release week] - 21,612 sales
299 sales behind #4: James Blunt '1973' - 21,911 sales
1 week earlier, #4: Robyn 'With Every Heartbeat' - 20,357 sales
1 week later, #4: James Blunt '1973' - 17,377 sales
For some reason, Polydor opted to release the download three days in advance of the physical, which resulted in Sexy! entering at #64 with 1,693 sales, the week before full release. Wasted sales that more than likely denied them managing to chart at #4, given how close behind James Blunt they ended up being!
In the week that Sexy! climbed to its peak of #5, the sales for the #3 single are unknown. If they'd not released the download early and these sales had been achieved in physical release week instead, then 21,612 + 1,693 = 23,305 sales. For all we know, the #3 that week sold less than that - so perhaps they robbed themselves of a #3 peak. The #3 sales from a week later are unknown as well.
-----
Call The Shots #3 peak [physical release week] - 31,457 sales
311 sales behind #2: T2 'Heartbroken' - 31,768 sales
2 weeks earlier, #2: Take That 'Rule The World' - 30,220 sales
Call The Shots was midweek #2 all week, so it was very unlucky that T2 overtook them on the final day. cry.gif
This single had a strange release strategy... the CD singles were released a week after the Tangled Up album. Had they scheduled its release a week before Tangled Up, I think it would have undoubtedly made it to #2 instead of Take That 'Rule The World' (Leona Lewis 'Bleeding Love' was #1 with 74,549). I think #2 is the best they'd have ever managed around this time, considering Leona's dominance.
-----
Can't Speak French #9 peak [physical release week] - 19,556 sales
1 week later, #5: Madonna '4 Minutes' - 20,623 sales | #8: Chris Brown 'With You' - 16,037 sales
This could have potentially peaked at #6, #7 or #8 if the physicals/digital EP has been released a week later? Unfortunately the #6 & #7 sales from that week are unknown, but we can see that Chris Brown required 3,000 sales less to reach #8.
-----
The Loving Kind #10 peak [physical release week] - 19,655 sales
1 week earlier, #8: Beyoncé - Single Ladies - 19,200 sales
1 week later, #9: P!nk - Sober - 16,941 sales
-----
Untouchable #11 peak [physical release week] - 21,708 sales
2,883 sales behind #10: Beyoncé 'Halo' - 24,591 sales
2 weeks earlier, #10: Lily Allen 'Not Fair' - 21,149 sales
1 week later, #10: Beyoncé 'Halo' - 21,269 sales
Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course and this relies on assuming that their singles would have sold the same number of copies in different weeks to achieve these better peaks... but in summary, what could have been:
#1 - No Good Advice (2 or 3 weeks earlier)
#2 - Life Got Cold (1 week later | or in release week had there not been a distribution problem)
#1 - Jump (1 or 2 weeks earlier)
#1 - Love Machine (1 week earlier)
#3 - Long Hot Summer (2 weeks earlier)
#2 - Biology (2 weeks earlier or 1 week later)
Possibly #6, #7 or #8? - See The Day (1 week earlier)
#1 - Something Kinda Ooooh (1 week earlier or 1 week later | or if download/physical formats had been released together)
#3 - I Think We're Alone Now (1 week earlier)
#4 (maybe even #3) - Sexy! No No No... (1 week earlier or 1 week later | or if download/physical formats had been released together)
#2 - Call The Shots (2 weeks earlier | or if download/physical formats had been released together)
Possibly #6 or #7, definitely #8 - Can't Speak French (1 week later)
#8 - The Loving Kind (1 week earlier)
#10 - Untouchable (2 weeks earlier or 1 week later)
I would regard Something Kinda Ooooh as being their biggest missed opportunity for #1 - the download only week was daft (even though it was great that they managed to be the first British act to debut in the Top 5 without a physical release on sale).
Long Hot Summer was their only non-Top 5 hit that viably could have been a Top 5. I wonder if it would be better regarded by the fans had it been a Top 5 hit? It being their first to miss out surely tainted it.
Conversely, these releases were well timed:
The Show - #2 - 28,572 sales. The previous two weeks would have seen it enter at #3, had it sold the same.
Wake Me Up - #4 - 16,351 sales. The previous two weeks would have seen it enter at #5, and if it had been released a week later it may have found itself as low as #7!
Whole Lotta History - #6 - 11,720 sales. If released a week earlier, these sales would have only got them to #9.
Thanks for that Jay! I'm just as chart nerdy so that really interested me! tongue.gif
Wasn't it common practice for songs to be available to download prior to their physical release in the early years of downloading? As much as I'd have loved 'Ooh' to have been a #1, I don't think it was bad scheduling, just the way songs were released back then.
Agreed about 'Long Hot Summer'. I don't think it would have got as bad a rap for being lead single if it had made the Top 5, even if it's performance was otherwise the same.
Btw, could the new totals be added to the opening posts?
Posted by: Jay ☆ 26th October 2018, 10:57 AM
Glad you found it interesting! heart.gif
Indeed a lot of pre-album singles had the download released a week in advance of the physicals (I'd actually forgotten this!). I think it was largely a tactical choice from the labels to ensure that the songs were high up the iTunes chart by the time the physicals came out!
Not everyone did this though. McFly's Star Girl had all of its formats released in the same week, which evidently paid off for them. I looked back on old BuzzJack posts and interestingly Star Girl did quite badly on iTunes in its first week. The vast majority of the downloads came via pre-ordering it with a code on mobile phones. drama.gif
wub.gif Thanks Aly! What could have been... the Untouchable sales generally being enough to be #10 in other weeks is probably the most galling discovery. :')
Maybe Girls Aloud should have taken the same strategy as McFly, given how strong physical sellers girl/boy groups are. Still, I think the girls were just generally unlucky to release at a more competitive time - I remember going through the 2006 sales and the 41k they sold to make #3 was pretty high in comparison to other #3s.
Would be interesting to know how the likes of Biology and Love Maching would have performed if released as leads - with the sales they did sale, plus theatrical sales from possible added interest from them being leads, maybe they could have been #1s?
606,000 for The Promise! https://twitter.com/officialcharts/status/1057912954501414912
So that's 6k sales since the last update, which was 13 weeks ago. If it kept selling at that pace, then it's managing around 24k a year.
I’m gutted that of all their singles to miss top ten it was Untouchable that was the one to do it and it’s even more painful it just missed out too I’d actually rather it have been like a #15 peak!
Do they still have the record or most consecutive singles to go top ten from their debut?
Is there any chance we'd be able to find out figures for Theme to St. Trinian's and On the Metro too? Would be interesting to see if On the Metro has managed to overtake Beautiful Cause You Love Me (and I oop at its sales figure!).
Looking back at some old information given, there's some confusion with these:
July 2018:
241,738 - Can't Speak French
87,671 - Wake Me Up
August 2019:
242,253 - Can't Speak French (+515 sales)
83,352 - Wake Me Up (-4,319 sales)
I'm not sure, maybe the info was wrong from last year? Or there's some missing sales this year?
Looking at older data, averages can be worked out and therefore we can forecast when singles may reach certification levels! Obviously a lot of these singles are depressingly far away from certifying Silver (or improving on the certification already achieved), and of course we have no idea what will happen over the next few years when it comes to sales levels and method of consumption. Also a reunion occurring would presumably cause their streams to pick up. Nevertheless, let's have a look at possibilities! By the way, I'm assuming these new sales are as of 2nd August 2019.
💀💀💀
I don't have enough recent data to be able to work out any of the other singles!
So in summary, this could be the timeline for future certifications:
01/2020 - Gold - Call the Shots
02/2020 - Gold - Love Machine
06/2021 - Silver - The Loving Kind
11/2021 - Gold - Jump
11/2021 - Gold - Something Kinda Ooooh
05/2023 - Platinum - Love Machine
08/2026 - Silver - No Good Advice
06/2027 - Silver - Sexy! No No No...
12/2027 - Platinum - Jump
05/2028 - 2xPlatinum - Sound of the Underground
09/2028 - Silver - Walk This Way
03/2029 - Platinum - Call the Shots
08/2029 - Platinum - Something Kinda Ooooh
05/2031 - Silver - Untouchable
01/2033 - 2xPlatinum - Love Machine
11/2033 - Silver - Long Hot Summer
01/2034 - Silver - The Show
04/2034 - Gold - Biology
09/2034 - 2xPlatinum - The Promise
02/2036 - Gold - Something New
08/2041 - Silver - I Think We're Alone Now
07/2057 - Silver - Whole Lotta History :')
I'd take everything I've predicted 2023 onward with a pinch of salt, given that so much could change in the next few years. At least we're certain to see Call the Shots and Love Machine go Gold in the very near future, and maybe in another couple of years Jump & Something Kinda Ooooh will join them. wub.gif Will also be lovely to see The Loving Kind go Silver
The strong likelihood that Love Machine will go Platinum a few years before No Good Advice manages to reach Silver is pretty crazy! By the end of 2004, Love Machine had only sold 94,000 copies, whereas No Good Advice was on 105,000 at the end of 2003. Love Machine was a relatively strong seller for them in the download era (it had increased to 181,177 as of June 2009, whereas NGA was on 132,917) and obviously it's soaring in the streaming era!
It shows the power of playlists... Love Machine is definitely their most prominent song on Spotify, it's included in a number of popular playlists. An unfortunate thing is that Girls Aloud aren't included in the "All Out 00s" playlist, which has millions of followers and is very beneficial for these songs: Sugababes About You Now / Push the Button and Atomic Kitten Whole Again / The Tide Is High. If any Girls Aloud song was placed high up in that playlist, the sales would skyrocket!
2056 !!!!! That's depressing laugh.gif sad.gif
What a FABULOUS post though, thank you so much for posting that Jay!!
You're very welcome *.* I enjoyed spending time on that post! wub.gif Thanks again to AJ! biggrin.gif
I'm certainly in no hurry to find out whether Whole Lotta History eventually goes Silver... I would be 68 years old by the time I've predicted it might occur rotf.gif In the relatively near future though I'm quite excited to find out when certifications happen in the 2020s... it's certainly high time that some of those songs became Gold sellers. wub.gif
Posted by: 365 9th August 2019, 03:59 AM
Jay, an incredible post.
Let's hope Call the Shots goes Gold pronto!
Posted by: Jay ☆ 9th August 2019, 11:55 PM
Thanks Joe heart.gif I'm so ready for Call the Shots to be Gold... it's been 12 84 years!
It seems the Wake Me Up & Can't Speak French figures from now are actually accurate; I'm not sure what was up with the figures given last year! I'm theorising that the Wake Me Up 87,000 figure was actually meant to be 81,000... the 1 & 7 characters looking similar mix up? Not really sure about Can't Speak French - maybe it was meant to be 231,000 rather than 241,000 back then.
Posted by: Theonix 10th August 2019, 09:47 AM
Wow that's for those sales everyone and that post Jay! Exciting could double their number of Gold+ certified singles in less than 12 months! ohmy.gif
I never realised that Crazy Stupid Love was Cheryl's third biggest seller either - although her album sales were in a huge downward spiral at that point, you can't really deny the singles sales were still strong for her 4th era
Yup, CSL & I Don't Care did more than fine even tho they weren't album sellers.
Expected Promise This to be closer to 500k and Call My Name closer to 600k.
I guess this is the order of her upcoming certifications :
- Fight For This Love : 2x Platinum (2020)
- Call My Name : Platinum (2021)
- I Don't Care : Gold (2022)
Posted by: Jordan Lee 10th August 2019, 11:42 PM
Sales wise I expected CSL to be on around what it is but I felt like Promise This may have been ahead.
I’m so happy at Parachutes sales though probably my second favourite from her wub.gif and one what hasn’t aged either! Love love love that track and includes my favourite Cheryl solo performance ever (the sport relief one).
Call My Name I felt may have been higher too.
Albums wise A Million Lights was robbed sad.gif Messy Little Raindrops was lucky to get those sales as she was still popular at the time and was a Q4 release too. Quality wise it’s her weakest album by a long way for me.
Woop at Cheryl having a solo album to outsell any GA one though and also with the single too. A Geordie queen : :heart:wub:
Fantastic news wub.gif Plus it’s now their third best selling single! For the level of impact & how memorable Love Machine is, it feels like it’s worthy of being this high up their best sellers list. Sound of the Underground, The Promise and Love Machine is a pretty stellar top 3 for them.
It’s funny to think that Love Machine wasn’t even Silver for the first 9 years of its existence, and for most of those years it didn’t seem like Silver was much of a possibility, and of course Gold was completely out of the question. It’ll always be a shame how awful sales levels were for a few years in the 2000s. Honestly given how big a hit Love Machine felt like in 2004, if today’s sales levels were applied to it, it probably would have been Gold within months, rather than 16 years!
I hope it’s not long until Call the Shots is Gold too... based on information we received last year it was on target for gold in January 2020, so its weekly average must have lowered a bit unfortunately.
Now 'Call the Shots' joins them just a week later! wub.gif
Cheryl's biggest hits revealed by the OCC:
QUOTE
If there's one thing Cheryl cannot be faulted on, it's her dependability to deliver an incredible live show. Following last year's main stage performance at Manchester Pride alongside Ariana Grande, she's back on the road this summer for more outdoor shows, including a headline slot Mighty Hoopla festival.
The London festival, which takes places on June 6, brings together the best pure pop's present and past, from Atomic Kitten, Gabrielle, Alphabeat and Anastacia to Allie X and Becky Hill. Sister Sledge and UK garge icon Lisa Maffia are among the latest acts to join the bill.
To celebrate this Cherylaissance, we're revealing her biggest hits, based on UK sales and streams using Official Charts Company data.
Cheryl's debut single from 2009, Fight For This Love, finishes top of the pile, with an impressive 1.2 million chart sales, made up of 1.05 milion pure sales and 16.6 million streams. Anticipation around Cheryl's first post-Girls Aloud release was sky-high at the time: her appointment as judge on the The X Factor, the UK's most popular show at the time, had quickly turned her into the nation's sweetheart. Fight For This Love landed straight in at Number 1, spent two weeks at the top and finished as the fourth best-selling single of 2009.
As evidenced in her all-time Top 10, Cheryl is best when she's in banger territory; and her second biggest single is probably the banger-iest of them all, 2012's Call My Name. The ballsy, neon-bright dance stomper - produced by Calvin Harris - launched Cheryl's third album A Million Lights and became her third Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart. It's chart sales to date stand at 557,000.
In third place is Crazy Stupid Love (524,000), a Number 1 hit in 2014 and Cheryl's most-streamed song with 19.2 million plays, while 2010 chart-topper Promise This is fourth on 474,000 chart sales. Her fifth and most recent Number 1 single, I Don't Care, places sixth on 368,000 chart sales.
Beyond the (many) chart-toppers, Top 5 hit Parachute - the third single from her debut album 3 Words - is fifth, and her will.i.am collaboration Heartbreaker, released while she was still in Girls Aloud, is eighth.
Narrowly missing out on a place in the Top 10 is Cheryl's comeback track Love Made Me Do It, a Top 20 in 2018, while her most popular album track is Heaven, another will.i.am collab from her debut album.
Cheryl's biggest songs on the Official UK Chart
