News has broken today that Cardi has applied to trademark her catchphrase "okurrr" (specifically with three Rs). Not everyone is happy about this, seeing as she didn't create the phrase even if it's arguably most associated with her now.

Here's what Cardi has to say about the backlash:

I can understand the controversy although equally I get her reasons for trying to trademark it too, it's very much part of her brand these days, but then my judgement's slightly distorted as I only really know it as a Cardi thing. Intrigued to hear all thoughts on this!

It doesn't sit well with me that she's trying to profiteer from queer culture after making offensive remarks, even if she apologized.

I'll be interested to see whether she gets the rights to it. It's a very savvy business move so I can understand why Cardi & her team are going for it, but equally I understand that it won't sit well with many people.

QUOTE
Last year, she described it as sounding like a "cold pigeon in New York City".

The application was made by her company, Washpoppin, and would cover merchandise like t-shirts and hoodies.

A second application was made for "paper goods, namely cups and posters".

According to Cardi, the phrase is "almost like, 'OK' but the 'okayyyy' is played out" with an extended series of rolled Rs.

It can be used as a simple affirmation or, with a change of inflection, as a comeback to someone who's in desperate need of criticism.

Cardi's trademark application helpfully clarified that "Okurrr" is correctly spelled with three Rs.

But she also made sure to submit an alternative spelling, using two Rs, to combat knock-off merchandise.

Doesn't surprise me at all that she is doing this but I agree this just doesn't sit right. For someone who's known as saying things against the LGBTQ+ community, for her to drill their phrase into the ground and use it for money is really not on.

Nah I'm pretty sure it's just a thing from drag culture in general, Laganja popularised it and it became one of those big things adjacent to Drag Race that always gets used and became a big thing for gay culture in general, but ofc this idiot thinks it's hers

Cardi B trademarking okurrr is about as ironic as her receiving her own forum over the drag community :') I can't even

Presumably not, it would be for merchandising purposes but I wouldn't put that past her laugh.gif

Even if she somehow came up with it first, which I very much doubt happened, morally to appropriate something that's become such a huge queer/drag culture element is beyond disrespectful and just... gross.

I think drag race would have to pay her royalties if it gets used or something. But don't quote me on that~

Benefiting from drag culture having never been part of it or done anything for it. Literally.
