BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ 2014 UK Top 40 Hit Singles QUIZ

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Thermometer1/2014-uk-top-40-hit-singles

play along and tell us how you did. would be interesting to see which recent top 40 hits are already forgotten amongst buzzjackers and which have stayed in our collective memory whether it's thanks to us loving said songs or just them being in near enough every chart of the year *coughHappyAllOfMeRatherBecough*

I'll play too although I have the advantage of having made the quiz tongue.gif

This reminds me for the Buzzjack track of 2014, the yearly game, calling J▲hq... wink.gif

Posted by: { bré } 13th November 2014, 07:07 PM

First one of these I've played in a while!

A few took me a little moment to remember (looking at The Neon Brotherhood, The Janoskians and R3hab in particular) but ended up with 295/296. I don't take fault for missing the last one as you spelled Resonance incorrectly when making the quiz kink.gif

Posted by: SavenSeize's Cat 13th November 2014, 07:08 PM

aside from the misspelling with Luvbug i got 293, missed out the titles for Neon Brotherhood, Sophie E-B and one of the M.A.D singles~

Posted by: JosephOdell 13th November 2014, 07:09 PM

284/296! Counting Resonance there cause it was spelt wrong kink.gif

I failed to get Joel Compass, Ellie Goulding (Beating Heart), Skepta, Starship, The Killers (Mr. Brightside), Lethal Bizzle (The Drop), The Human League, The Irish Brigade, The Neon Brotherhood, The Weather Girls, The Kooks (Around Town) and Wilkinson (Dirty Love).

Posted by: Jade 13th November 2014, 07:12 PM

I love these things!

I got 262, the ones I forgot (genuinely forgot about = bold, ones I didn't get round to answering but knew = italics):

- Bastille - Pompeii/Waiting All Night
- Breach - Everything You Never Had (We Had it All) [forgot the bit in brackets]
- Chase & Status - Alive
- Chris Brown - New Flame
- Dappy - No Regrets
- Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike - Tremor
- DJ Fresh - Make U Bounce
- Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad) [thought it was 'bigger than big' lol)
- Gorgon City - Unmissable
- Hardwell - Dare You

- Joel Compass - Forgive Me
- John Martin - Anywhere For You
- Kasabian - eez-eh
- Klingande - Jubel
- Lana De Rey - Gods and Monsters
- Lethal Bizzle - The Drop
- Lil Wayne - Believe Me
- Little Mix - Word Up

- LuvBug - Resonance - this was spelt wrong!! tongue.gif ('Resonace' it said)
- M.A.D - Fame & TV
- OneRepublic - If I Lose Myself
- OneRepublic - Love Runs Out
- Paolo Nutini - Better Man
- Pitbull - Timber
- Pitbull - We are One (Ole Ola)
- Rihanna - What Now
- Saint Motel - My Type
- Shakira - Empire
- Showtek - Cannonball (Earthquake)
- Sub Focus - Turn Back Time
- Taylor Swift - Welcome to New York

- The Neon Brotherhood - Hope Ain't a Bad Thing
- The Script - No Good In Goodbye
- Wilkinson - Dirty Love

Posted by: Rush 13th November 2014, 07:16 PM

Had been looking forward to this for ages biggrin.gif 290/296, counting Resonance as well as I certainly knew it! tongue.gif Could not for the life of me remember the titles of Chase & Status, Kaiser Chiefs, Rik Mayall or The Irish Brigade, or anything about the existence of Kasabian and Lil Wayne's songs laugh.gif

Posted by: Dobbo 13th November 2014, 07:21 PM

288, I'm not a quick typer so if I took too long on one I moved on and only had a little extra time to spare. Other than the misspelling of one I knew the ones I genuinely forgot/had no idea were:

Make U Bounce, Better Man, Hope Ain't A Bad Thing, Tonight (We Live Forever), Tell Her, Midnight Memories and Pills N Potions

Posted by: Iz~ 13th November 2014, 07:23 PM

I got 212, I got distracted and wasted a minute or two on the timer, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

So I won't bore you with listing EVERY song I missed but I forgot about Kasabian's song unusually which I'm really sad about. And the two best Ed Sheeran songs on the list (Sing & I See Fire) I somehow missed, I forgot about Rihanna, the names of DJ Fresh's hits completely went blank for me, and I'd forgotten about Flo Rida's song completely.

Posted by: Dircadirca 13th November 2014, 07:26 PM

Well then I got a rather terrible 252/296 tongue.gif Mostly because of way too many dance hits that I'd only heard once or twice and have little memory of, so all of those artists seemed to have one or two that I couldn't remember (so I did miss Unmissable laugh.gif ) And yes I 'got' Resonance as well tongue.gif

Posted by: ► ▲ N 13th November 2014, 07:28 PM

oops at the ------Resonance mis-spelling. I've corrected that now anyway.

Got the whole lot but I'll never know if that's due to me being that good or because I typed the song titles out tongue.gif

Posted by: J▲hq 13th November 2014, 07:30 PM

163. Don't feel too bad about those missing other than err.. not noticing three One Direction tracks at the bottom of the second column.

I thought you were on about '#1 of the year' for a moment (consider that handled when the last chart show of the year comes around) but now I realise you're on about the other one I ran last year right? biggrin.gif

Can get to it tonight possibly.

I love doing sporcle quizzes so I'll do this now smile.gif

EDIT: Or later as just about to have supper

Posted by: ML Hammer95 13th November 2014, 08:16 PM

Got 185/296 laugh.gif

Surprised I got that many tbf, a lot of artists I had no idea had charted/never heard off plus it took ages to scroll down to the bottom on my phone so should have got a few more (not over 200 mind!)

Posted by: BlazingLovatic 13th November 2014, 08:17 PM

I got 87 💁

Posted by: #Slayberry 13th November 2014, 08:24 PM

247/296. Yeah... not too stellar of a job. Not really a fast typer and I had to move down a lot, plus I kept forgetting what was in the parentheses...

And I didn't know if "Good Girls" counted because it was a promo single

Some of these songs are old as f*ck

Posted by: mr_aly 13th November 2014, 08:38 PM

222, got fairly close to the end but there were a few I couldn't recall the titles of (such as the MAD tracks, the Bakermat one also got me, as did Joel Compass, Kaiser Chiefs and Dapper Laughs. The Justin Timberlake one was there somewhere in my mind but I just couldn't recall what the name of it was).

Posted by: Rob S 13th November 2014, 08:40 PM

I got just over 100/296 on first go then 222/296 laugh.gif

Posted by: M¤th 13th November 2014, 08:46 PM

I only got 202, I am such a slow typer at these things...

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 13th November 2014, 09:06 PM

226/296
Ran out of time

Posted by: FM11 13th November 2014, 09:12 PM

236/296

20 minutes is not enough for me. tongue.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat 13th November 2014, 09:23 PM

199. I feel really dumb compared to some of you (though a lot of time was consumed typing/remembering what was in the brackets to some titles)

Posted by: -Jay- 13th November 2014, 09:24 PM

160 laugh.gif

Posted by: Storm-Ray John 13th November 2014, 09:46 PM

Nice quiz, I got 188/296, but I did run out of time. Perhaps a 5min extention? laugh.gif

It also put me under pressure to think what I had left so I probably would have got 220 or so had a had a bit more time sad.gif

Posted by: ► ▲ N 13th November 2014, 09:48 PM

I can't make it any longer than 20 minutes so don't blame me for running out of time~

278 because i ran out of time

Posted by: AdamAloud 13th November 2014, 09:50 PM

127! To be honest, I didn't even recognise half of the artists! Such is my relationship with the UK charts these days I suppose. laugh.gif

Posted by: Riser 14th November 2014, 01:10 AM

255/296. I was typing pretty consistently for the duration of the quiz, the remaining 41 I simply couldn't remember. The most recent ones I forgot were "Say You Love Me", "Resonance" and "God Only Knows". The biggest hits I forgot were "Dibby Dibby Sound", "Braveheart", and "Love Never Felt So Good", so not bad! Well, I thought I did well but then I saw everyone else's scores and drama.gif

Thanks Dan!

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 14th November 2014, 01:48 AM

I did way better on my 2nd go
283/296

Posted by: Dircadirca 14th November 2014, 02:31 AM

It's interesting that despite 2014 including streaming in the chart (and making a good handful of tracks miss out), there are slightly more tracks in this list than last year's quiz, unless this one got a slightly larger time frame or something?

Posted by: SPINNING ADAM 14th November 2014, 09:00 AM

I'm going to try it again too possibly later today. Maybe you should've made this quiz after 2014 to save making it twice unsure.gif

Of course I could make it in your favour if you so wish smile.gif

Hmmm that's a interesting point actually thinking.gif

Posted by: ► ▲ N 14th November 2014, 04:52 PM

the thing is it's not possible to have more than 300 answers in one quiz, which explains both why I didn't wait until the end of the year to make the quiz and why last year's quiz has less songs in the quiz despite having more chart entries in the year (as I don't want some songs that entered in a certain chart week to make the quiz and some to not)

Posted by: ► ▲ N 14th November 2014, 04:59 PM

Here's a rundown of the most and least remembered top 40 hits (don't look if you haven't done the quiz yet)

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Thermometer1/2014-uk-top-40-hit-singles/results

didn't expect Amnesia to be so high but 5SOS do have the advantage of being at the top of the page (still doesn't explain why it's higher than their #1 SLSP). Ed Sheeran 'Don't' is currently the most recognised hit, with 'Problem' at #2 and 'Amnesia' at #3 alongside 'Break Free' and 'Happy'.

Unsurprisingly the 2 lowest songs so far are one week wonder charity single 'Hope Ain't A Bad Thing' and campaign single 'Roll of Honour', the latter which only got 5 seconds of airplay on the chart show due to its subject matter.

Posted by: { bré } 14th November 2014, 05:00 PM

There were a total of 373 top 40 hits in 2013, so 2014 is not going to match that (it'd require there to be an average of 11 new entries every week for the rest of the year).

Even including sales-only top 40 hits 2014 is still only on 324 top 40 hits so 7 new entries per week to match 2013 which is still rather steep.

QUOTE(► ▲ N @ Nov 14 2014, 04:59 PM) *
Ed Sheeran 'Don't' is currently the most recognised hit

This is probably also down to 5SOS being at the top of the page, as 'Don't Stop' gives you 'Don't' automatically tongue.gif

Ah that's a shame sad.gif

Perhaps exclude the #1s? thinking.gif

And have another quiz just for the #1s biggrin.gif

166/296

Not that good at all.

Posted by: Dobbo 14th November 2014, 05:39 PM

Full marks on second attempt today smile.gif

Posted by: mr_aly 14th November 2014, 07:11 PM

I think Ed Sheeran could be leading that with 'Don't' because I got it accidentally when I was going down the list and started to type out another song which started with it, so even if people don't know the title they'd get it by accident. tongue.gif

Posted by: M¤th 14th November 2014, 07:49 PM

I tried it again and got 252, still wanted more but oh well!

Interestingly in the US, it for a while refused to leave the top 40, even though it wasn't particularly big 36-26-34-34-35-40-35-37-37-37-42-45-57-59-57-64-62-69-81-87-out tongue.gif

I think there's a feature on Sporcle that allows the master to accept alternatives for answers. I also believe you can change this ongoingly, looking at comments often smile.gif
