"This Netflix-original comedy-drama is inspired by Norman Lear's 1975 series of the same name. This time around, the series follows the life of Penelope, a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life. Now a nurse, Penelope is raising two strong-willed children. When faced with challenges, Penelope turns to her "old-school" mother, and her building manager, who has become an invaluable confidant. The series offers a contemporary take on what life looks like in both good and bad times, and how loved ones can help make it all worthwhile."

It is pretty much the standard lowkey-cheesy family sitcom that's been done loads before but it does contain good humour and plot lines, not to mention every character is extremely likeable and endearing to watch. It has a very feminist theme to It, it has to when it's about a single mum and her two kids who also has her mother staying with them but it discusses the likes of sexism, how it differs now compared to in the past and loads of other contemporary issues. Elena, the 15 year old daughter is a "social justice warrior" and rejects a lot of her Cuban family traditions because she feels it's misogynistic etc but her grandmother is an extremely Catholic woman who is very passionate about her religious and cultural traditions, it's interesting to see so many different perspectives navigate today's issues etc.

Anyway, it's an easy watch, i did season one in a day and season two is dropping later this month. If light sitcoms are your thing, I'd defo check it out.

I really enjoyed this, but I have a real hatred of both the kids in it laugh.gif

I'm most of the way through season2 now having finally got back round to season 1. It's such a funny heartwarming show. It handles some serious topics with real grace.

I don't think there's a topic for this, at least I couldn't find one. Who loves this? *.*

One Day at a Time revolves around a Cuban-American family living in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park, focusing on a single mom who is an Army veteran dealing with PTSD, her kids and her Cuban mother. The re-imagination of the original CBS sitcom tackles important issues like mental illness, immigration, sexism, homophobia, and racism that faces Latinos living in the United States. It has three seasons, the most recent premiered earlier this month.

Its first season premiered in January 2017, but I only started watching it earlier this month (and have nearly reached the end of Season 3 already). I absolutely love it! wub.gif Genuinely find it to be one of the funniest shows I've ever seen (which sounds like ridiculously high praise, but I mean it!). Everything about it just works - the cast is fantastic (particularly the character Abuelita, she is iconic heart.gif ), the humour always feels natural and unforced.

I tried watching it because I enjoyed Fuller House but I'm just not too into it.

I'm not sure why, but I feel claustrophobic watching it tongue.gif
They're always inside and there aren't any windows! At least Fuller House has a garden and are at school sometimes!

Not me!!

but it's how I reeled Joseph & Maurice in x

YES! I love this. So funny and refreshing, really gives you old school sitcom vibes without being problematic and focusing on current issues, not easy to do! I agree, Abuelita is absolutely everything and has me in stitches at times!

Oops! kink.gif Yas at your fantastic taste tbh x

So I only finished watching this last week, having binged all 3 seasons in less than a week... and tonight I decided to start watching Season 1 again! I very, very rarely go in for repeat viewings, and certainly not so quickly after the first watch, but this show is so special and actually missed it. It's interesting to see the first two episodes again and some jokes landing better because I'm obviously far more used to the characters and the dynamics than I was when I was new to it.

By the way...

cry.gif I would be beyond gutted if it gets cancelled just as I've discovered it, but not long after that was tweeted #RenewODAAT started trending... I hope the outpouring of love is enough. heart.gif

Posted by: Klaus 25th February 2019, 09:20 AM

I don’t watch the show but I remember they did the same when considering renewing for Season 3. Whether it’s a ploy or not to drum up people talking about it I don’t know but they don’t exactly advertise it much (like most of their returning shows now) and it can’t be costly to make in comparison with other shows. Although I did see that it’s actually made by Sony and they prefer shows they make themselves.

Posted by: Jack 26th February 2019, 10:33 PM

Really late but I am fully obsessed. Such a easy fun watch, but I'm so so impressed with the way it tackles hard hitting issues like racism, homophobia, gender and sexism so effortlessly, as well as informing us about different cultures. It is so funny as well and I can't get enough.

It doesn't get near enough promotion though, I watched it through people here saying it was good, I wouldn't have watched it as the old font used and the title are kind of 'eh' looking, you would have no idea really!

Posted by: Kehlindsey 26th February 2019, 10:42 PM

I think i only started watching it because I saw gifs of Elena and Syd on tumblr lmao but hopefully with Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero guest starring in season 3 will mean brooklyn nine nine stans will check it out too

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 14th March 2019, 05:41 PM

The show has been cancelled. I'm a bit disappointed as I actually started to give it another go.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 14th March 2019, 07:14 PM

cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif gutted

It's apparently being shopped around to other networks, so I hope it could find a new home?

Posted by: JosephAvery 14th March 2019, 07:23 PM

Extremely disappointing news. The show was groundbreaking in so many ways. It felt exciting, fresh and new, yet also so homely and warm. No show has made me laugh as much in a little while as this, it's absolutely hilarious and every character adds their own touch to the humour. Abuelita is someone I could watch all day long, and Penelope is such a strong lead. Schneider totally won me over too after I initially wondered what purpose he served laugh.gif

I also loved how this show wasn't afraid to tackle topical issues. I learnt a lot about anxiety, PTSD and the racism that Cuban families can face, and none of it was brought up in a condescending way for those who may not know. It's accessible, emotional and just what TV needs to be in 2019. Desperately praying that it's picked up by another network because I want to see this family for so many more seasons.

Posted by: 5 Silas Frøkner 14th March 2019, 07:25 PM

I’m gutted. It’s such a great and lovely show

Posted by: Klaus 14th March 2019, 07:26 PM

Lol not enough people were watching - they never even promoted the show! I only heard about it from Twitter when it was threatening to be cancelled last year. As I said before, I highly doubt it’s costly to make especially comparing to their other shows. I’ve not seen it though so maybe there’s lots of period drama elements and big explosions with car flips

Posted by: linds 15th March 2019, 01:23 AM

I don't believe that not enough people were watching, especially this latest season. it makes me kinda sick tbh when shows of this calibre get cancelled whilst extremely overdone, problematic and generic shows get renewed time after time. like why do we still have insatiable or riverdale or even friends when it cost them what? $100,000 ?? It was the same with sense8, like okay that woulda probs cost a fair amount to make but maybe if they invested some of that friends cash into that as well as promoting their originals like odaat it woulda got more viewers. I'm really pressed about this but I'm hoping it's not the end and someone else does pick it up. it happened for b99 so I do have hope here. altho Idk if i could picture it on a mainstream network over a streaming service but we shall see i guess.

Posted by: Klaus 15th March 2019, 06:22 PM

Friends was the most streamed show in the UK (and probs US too last year) beating shows on iPlayer etc too so it’s a HUGE draw for people. A costly one certainly but when the rumoured amount is the same as what they were/are spending on likes of shows like The Crown and it’s getting the most viewers - it’s possibly worthwhile!

Posted by: Jack 16th March 2019, 12:03 PM

Joseph summed up my thoughts about ODAAT perfectly. Such a shame.

I honestly don't think it was promoted well or marketed well at all. If you have a quick glance at the title and still for it on Netflix, it appears to be a dated show which is obviously not the case at all. I have only ever heard about it from word of mouth as well.

So sad as it was quickly becoming one of my most favorite shows sad.gif. I hope somehow that another network picks it up or Netflix reconsiders, but it's looking doubtful at this stage unfortunately.

looking forward to working through the next two series

sad.gif I saw it coming but that's so disappointing, not even a full fourth season due to covid. I'd love for it to defy the odds again and make a return but I can't see it at this point! sad.gif At least things are somewhat more wrapped up now than they were at the end of season 3.

A fond farewell to One Day at a Time.
One Day at a Time's journey is officially over after news this week that producers Sony could not find a third home for the beloved comedy. Showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce join the show this week to say farewell to their fan-favorite series in an interview that is both funny and emotional.

sad.gif It's such a shame. I'm at least glad that the show didn't end on a massive cliffhanger, but there was so much more potential cry.gif

Thank you . You changed my life . So much love so many laughs and tears . There are no words to describe what this cast these show runners the crew the writers the execs mean to me . But I’ll say it again this show and my beautiful cast changed my LIFE . Goodnight my loves what an incredible ride it was.

Okay you guys, it’s officially over. I know a lot of you are probably exhausted from the roller coaster this has been and I totally get if you’re over reading sappy ODAAT posts, but for those of you who aren’t, this ones for us. It will absolutely spill over into the comments. Not sorry.
1. Season 1, episode 13. This episode always felt like the heart of the show bc at the core of all of it was the unconditional love and support of family, chosen and otherwise. The energy on the set was so palpable I can still feel it running over me when I think about it. It’s a feeling I go back to over and over, letting the joy of experiencing artistry and community fuel me. This scene was ever present, in jokes with James about him leaving Elena on the dance floor, in backstage whispers of “I got you.” in the unwavering trust and love you could feel every time the director yelled “action!”
2. Let’s start with the things you guys never got to see. The quiet moments on set while we were on 5s and yet you could find most of the cast somewhere on the floor chatting with each other, sharing stories, snacking, discussing that weeks episode or last nights event. Feeling a pair of hands land on my shoulders and looking up to see an EGOT sweetly asking, “how you doing, nena?” Watching Marcel recruit the crew for whatever shenanigan he was trying to get into next. Hearing the roar of Machado’s laughter somewhere on the stage. Seeing a little group huddled around Stephen and running over knowing whatever he was telling them was bound to be good. It’s these moments I’ll miss most.
3. Then there was the goofiness. The playing in rehearsals, sneaking a funny look, seeing who would break first, finding the beats and the arcs and the funny so freely it almost felt like we were only doing this for each other, not for the entire world to see.
4. Run throughs kinda felt that way too. There’s something really magical about putting a show on its feet with the only audience being people who had a hand in it, who love these characters and are all there to aid the story be the best it can be. Also though, watching this cast was the greatest privilege of my career. I was never not in awe, never not absorbing the genius that flows out of those humans.
5. And then there was show night. You guys were our bonus cast member, as integral to the show as the rest of us. There are no words to thank you enough, but I have to try anyway. Thank you for the never ending amount of love, support, vulnerability and growth you brought into my life. You’ve changed me in the best of ways and every single one of you will always be a huge part of my life. I wish I had known our last show night would be our last. I wish I had taken it in more. I wish I had hugged everyone a little tighter and a little longer. I wish I could feel the magic we all created together one last time.
6. When you walked on our set, chances were you would hear “We’re making a TV show!!” at least once. Pretty sure Gloria started it and I took it and ran with it. Every time Glo and I saw each other we’d say it. I think a lot people in this industry get into it bc it’s their dream, but it’s a tough business to stay soft in and even harder to stay present as we’re always stressing about what comes next. For me, “we’re making a tv show!” Was a reminder that were living the god damn dream. A reminder to look around and take it in. A reminder not to forget that it was a miracle of sorts that all our paths crossed at the perfect time so we could make this perfect show together in an industry where most people never “make it.” A reminder that somehow, we made it, and man it was beautiful.
Verified
7. Then the pandemic hit. We were in the middle of season 4. We thought we’d be back. We had already done the impossible and gotten picked up again, now we just had to wait a little longer. The brilliant Justina Machado was about to direct us for the first time. And then 1 week turned to 2 and 2 turned to 3 and eventually I had a sinking feeling. Todd and I went to Sony to pick up our stuff from our dressing rooms. This was in June. At first, we played. I got to finally open those damn curtains. Todd did his Schneider thing. We stayed 6 feet away, never hugging, and walked through a time capsule. Scripts with notes in every corner. Our chairs in the last places we all sat. Every dressing room untouched. We stayed for hours. In a lot of ways, I think Todd and I are the softest of the bunch. Uncle Todd has been there for me in some really defining moments of my life. His was the first dressing room I’d run to when a boy did a stupid thing or when I felt insecure about my comedy skills or when I was just bored. He never turned me away. Ever. I feel really lucky I got those couple hours with my uncle Todd in our home, reminiscing and laughing and taking it all in together one last time.
8. This was our notes room. We’d make our way in here after run throughs, Moreno would say something inappropriate and we’d all squeal with laughter. This is where I came into my own. Where I learned about artistic partnership. Here I was taught that my voice mattered, taught to always fight for what I believe in, taught how to mold and shape a character. I snuck away from Todd that day we went in to get ur stuff to film this. I wanted to take everything, to record everything, to make sure I’d never forget a single second or a single detail. He didn’t want me to think that way, he’s always the most optimistic person in the room. Today, I’m glad I did it anyway.
9. At the end of each season I took a picture with all my scripts. I never threw them away. Here’s half of season 4. A rare moment of bittersweet joy in the middle of a pandemic as I looked at all we had accomplished.
