It has to count as a decent result for the Lib Dems, gaining over twice as many votes on a reduced turnout with a very short campaign. It could be a sign that we may have some interesting by-elections in the course of this parliament.

There will be a by-election in Newpost West following the death of sitting Labour MP Paul Flynn at the age of 84. It was a comfortable Labour win in the last general election, with Flynn winning over 50% of the vote, although the Conservatives won 39%, so don't rule them completely out. Will probably be a good Labour win.

Yay, a by-election! All eyes will be on whether a) the Tiggers will field a candidate, and b) If the SDP will field a candidate. Well, that's where my eyes will be, anyway.

Plaid Cymru - Jonathan Clark Renew - June Davies Conservative - Matthew Evans UKIP - Neil Hamilton Labour - Ruth Jones Liberal Democrat - Ryan Jones SDP - Ian McLean For Britain - Hugh Nicklin Abolish the Welsh Assembly - Richard Suchorzewski Democrats and Veterans - Philip Taylor Green - Amelia Womack Quite a large list of candidates for a by-election, a good range of parties for the electorate to choose from (even though it'll end up being Labour they go for). TIG didn't stand a candidate, although a different pro-EU centrist party, Renew, is. Two Ukip splinter groups are standing, Democrats and Veterans & the explicitly far-right For Britain, in addition to your bog-standard Ukip, and look! There's the SDP! |

Tory MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, Chris Davies, has pleaded guilty to charges of. expenses fraud. Strangely, particularly as it relates directly to his job as an MP, the news doesn’t seem to have received the same coverage as the Labour MP for Peterborough. In the latter case, she had the Labour whip removed and the party joined calls for her resignation. The Tory response in Davies’ case so far - nothing, he retains the Tory whip.

The South West Argus have done a sterling job interviewing all the local candidates for the by-election (that's one local newspaper website I never thought I would visit so consistently on a weekly basis), including the representative from the AWA Party. It seems to be a single issue party, although the candidate was previously a leadership candidate for Ukip over 10 years ago (losing out to a Mr Nigel Farage). |
