A thread for the album and all assorted news!!

Harry will be both hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live on 16th November, which means he'll be singing TWO songs, and we can expect what will likely be a promo single before then! Perhaps it's Watermelon Sugar?? ohmy.gif

Exciting promo!

Posted by: JosephStyles 30th October 2019, 04:28 PM

Harry has confirmed that he turned down the role of Prince Eric so he can tour next year! (then played it down as he's not announced it yet kink.gif)

YASSSSSSSSS

I do NOT feel confident with that date but SO HYPED ANYWAY

Posted by: blacksquare 4th November 2019, 05:53 PM

Fantastic artwork

I'm intrigued by this, which is more than I could say about his debut

Posted by: Calum 4th November 2019, 05:58 PM

Hyped *.* not expecting this to do much though with that release date yikes

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 4th November 2019, 10:34 PM

Dua's releasing her second album on the same day ohmy.gif

Posted by: Medellíam 4th November 2019, 11:28 PM

I think Harry will still do better than Liam despite being released a week closer to Christmas, but it is a daunting release date. Dua releasing too! I'd like to see them both surprise and smash big time upon release, I guess it's feasible given they're both likely to have strong promotional campaigns in the lead up, plus I'm confident they'll do well in the New Year anyway.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 4th November 2019, 11:39 PM

I think what I saw with Dua may be fake laugh.gif

Posted by: Jay ☆ 4th November 2019, 11:41 PM

Interesting and striking artwork!

I made no secret of the fact that his debut album era left me cold, but I love Lights Up! I'm cautiously optimistic that his second album will be more of what I want from him.

Certainly a bold release date! Not sure what is likely to be his main competition that week. Could Dua stand to do better? We'll see!

Posted by: Cremey 5th November 2019, 12:52 AM

That artwork heart.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee 5th November 2019, 01:13 AM

I was thinking that’s a bad release date.

Had the single came like a month early they could’ve pushed for a November release but that’s literally like Xmas chart week isn’t!

I think it might peak in position in the new year but he’ll sell more than what Liam will.

It's looking like Harry will become first member of 1D to perform at Glastonbury (though tbh Niall is probably the only other one who will play it at some point) - James Arthur won't be happy laugh.gif

Posted by: blacksquare 14th December 2019, 06:32 PM

It's a serviceable album with some great tracks but he needs to work on his lyricism and storytelling — some of the songs feel a bit empty. His identity isn't quite fully formed yet either — so much of it is clearly inspired by other artists, to the point where he's essentially just doing his own version of their work.

I do think he has the potential to be a really great artist in the future though as all the foundations are there.

Posted by: Jonjo 14th December 2019, 08:27 PM

I think I agree. It just kinda washed over me after my few listens of it, which is a shame as I really enjoyed his debut. I'm really surprised by the mass hype around it and the generally positive reviews for it. But eh. I guess it's just not to my tastes.

Posted by: JosephCarey 15th December 2019, 03:56 PM

Over 4k ahead of Stormzy in today's mids, gonna be a tight race ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 15th December 2019, 05:54 PM

Stormzy is today and tomorrows price crash in hmv! It's £6.99. I think he has some hmv signings still too (I think). I imagine they're gonna be the difference.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 15th December 2019, 05:56 PM

I think Harry will be a big selling #2. Stormzy will stream better and I think he’ll overtake. Plus if the signings rumours are true as well that may well help him. But Harry is much bigger WW and he’s slaying everywhere tbh what a star! I was nervous of him releasing Xmas week but he’s shown what a strong fanbase he has.

sales wise he is smashing it!! And I think he’ll sell well in the long run too. I’ll be listening to the album at some point this week smile.gif

Posted by: pippa 16th December 2019, 07:03 PM

Number 1 for Harry in a very tight battle with Rod Stewart at Number 2 and a little fraction behind that is Stormy.
Harry has sales of 28.5k which is a fantastic start.
What sales did his debut album open with?

Posted by: Rooney 17th December 2019, 11:11 AM

I'm reallly enjoying this album, I think it's much stronger than his debut. Totally agree about him borrowing lots of different artists styles and he's not really sure exactly what type of artist he is yet. That said, there's nothing wrong with that at all. You can certainly tell out of the other 1Ders, he certainly has the most money behind him, the production values are a world away from Liam and Louis for example.

Falling surely the standout for a next single? Although Treat People With Kindness is my favourite.

Posted by: dannjohn 17th December 2019, 07:49 PM

Now this is what you call an album... so much diversity sonically... lyrically it's all a bit one note but it's a great record... 'Falling' is so beautiful, it hurts.

Posted by: pippa 19th December 2019, 04:40 PM

I have not yet purchased the album but plan to do so in the coming days as i like everything i have heard so far from the release.
Harry has really come through with his follow up album after also delivering a strong debut.
The scene is now set for a successful third album when the time comes.

Harry Styles' 'Fine Line' Album Earns Huge No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart
The set tallies the third-biggest week of the year for an album in the U.S.

Harry Styles lands his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his sophomore effort Fine Line makes a huge debut atop the list.

The set, which was released on Dec. 13 via Erskine/Columbia Records, earned 478,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 19, according to Nielsen Music. That figure marks the biggest week for a pop album by a male artist in over four years, the largest week for a Columbia album in more than three years, and the third-biggest week overall for any album in 2019. It also scores the largest sales week for an album by a solo U.K. male artist since Nielsen Music began electronically tracking sales data in 1991.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Dec. 28-dated chart, where Fine Line debuts at No. 1, will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Dec. 24.

Of Fine Line’s total unit start of 478,000, album sales comprise 393,000; SEA units total 83,000 (equating to 108.7 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs); and TEA units equal 3,000.

Styles’ Second No. 1 Album: Styles goes two-for-two at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as Fine Line follows his previous No. 1, his self-titled debut album in 2017. The latter started atop the list dated June 3, 2017, with 230,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week and 193,000 of that sum in album sales.

First U.K. Male Artist to Debut at No. 1 With First Two Albums: The England-born Styles is the first U.K. male artist to debut at No. 1 with his first two albums. (Further, only two solo U.K. male acts have debuted at No. 1 with their first albums: Styles and his former One Direction bandmate Zayn. The latter launched at No. 1 back in 2016 with Mind of Mine.)

Third-Largest Week for an Album in 2019: Fine Line’s starting sum of 478,000 units marks the third-biggest week of 2019 for any album. Only the debuts of Taylor Swift’s Lover (869,000; Sept. 7 chart) and Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding (489,000; Sept. 21) landed larger frames.

Biggest Week for a Pop Album by a Male Artist in Four Years: Fine Line’s blockbuster bow yields the largest week for a pop album by a male artist in over four years. The last set to notch a bigger week was Justin Bieber’s Purpose, which entered at No. 1 on the Dec. 5, 2015-dated chart with 649,000 units. (Pop albums are those that did not chart on a genre-specific tally such as Alternative Albums or Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, etc.)

Columbia Records’ Biggest Week Since 2016: Fine Line -- released via Erskine/Columbia Records -- gives Columbia its largest overall week for an album since the May 14, 2016-dated chart, when Beyoncé’s Lemonade (on Parkwood/Columbia) bowed at No. 1 with 653,000 units. Fine Line also logs the largest week for any album released by a Sony Music label in over a year. The last larger week registered by a Sony release was the debut of Travis Scott’s Astroworld (on Cactus Jack/Epic Records), when it started at No. 1 on the Aug. 18, 2018, chart with 537,000 units.

‘Fine Line’ Is Already Among 2019’s Top 10-Selling Albums: After only one week in release, Fine Line is the sixth-largest selling album of 2019. Fine Line, which sold 393,000 copies in its debut week, was bolstered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with his upcoming tour, as well as an array of merchandise/album bundles sold via his official website. So far in 2019, the top-selling album in the U.S. is Taylor Swift’s Lover, with 1.05 million copies sold.

Largest Sales Week for a U.K. Male Artist in Nielsen Music History: Fine Line’s debut sales of 393,000 is the largest sales week for an album by a solo U.K. male artist since Nielsen Music began electronically tracking sales data in 1991. It surpasses the 374,000 sold by Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album over Christmas week of 1992 (reflected on the chart dated Jan. 9, 1993). Both Styles and Clapton were born in England -- Styles in Redditch, Worcestershire, and Clapton in Ripley, Surrey. (The largest sales week for an album by a female U.K. artist -- and for any album -- remains the debut of Adele’s 25 in 2015 with 3.38 million sold. The largest sales frame by a U.K. group is the 1.26 million sold by The Beatles’ greatest hits set 1 over Christmas week of 2000.)

Fourth-Biggest Vinyl Sales Week in Nielsen Music History: Fine Line was also a big seller on vinyl LP, as the album sold 28,000 copies on the format in its debut week. The only larger weeks for a vinyl album since Nielsen Music launched in 1991 were garnered by Adele’s 25 in the week ending Dec. 24, 2015 (31,000), Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy in its opening week (34,000 exclusively on vinyl LP in the week ending Nov. 27, 1994, before it became widely available on CD) and Jack White’s Lazaretto in its debut week (40,000; June 14, 2014).

Second week at #1 on the Billboard 200!!!!

QUOTE
Harry Styles’ Fine Line album leads the Billboard 200 chart for a second week, as the set earned 89,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Dec. 26, according to Nielsen Music. That’s down 81% compared to its debut a week earlier, when it blasted in atop the tally with 478,000 units.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Jan. 4, 2020-dated chart (where Fine Line holds at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Dec. 31.

Of Fine Line’s overall second-week unit sum, album sales comprise 47,000 of that figure -- down 88% compared to its first-week sales figure of 346,000.

Fine Line is the first pop album to spend two weeks at No. 1 since Ed Sheeran’s No.6 Collaborations Project set also spent its first two weeks in charge, on the charts dated July 27 and Aug. 3, 2019. (Pop albums are those that did not chart on a genre-specific tally such as Alternative Albums or Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, etc.) Additionally, Fine Line, which is Styles’ second No. 1, has now surpassed the one-week reign of his self-titled debut.

A little late but I listened to this the other week (Joseph forced me to I initially just checked out the album tracks that charted on the Hot 100 and I enjoyed all of them, that left only 5 songs I hadn't heard so I thought I might as well hear the rest) and it's actually a pretty good album, 'Falling' and 'Golden' are particular highlights although 'Watermelon Sugar' is still my favourite song from it and from Harry in general. There's nothing on here that I absolutely love but it's mostly consistently solid. The 2 proper singles are actually among the worst songs on the album for me... (although my overall least fave was 'Treat People With Kindness', the backing vocals on that song are not the tea).

First 1D related album I've ever listened to in full, who'da thunk.

Just listened in full and wow this is so so so good!

So much variety on there and he sounds so confident and sure of himself.

The only other solo 1D album I liked prior to this was ZAYNs material but this is brilliant and I’ll definitely get the actual CD now.

Falling was a highlight from the tracks I’d not heard yet and Golden. But there’s not a single bad track on there. One of the best albums I’ve heard in a long while and Male artist wise it’s probably my fave album released last year alongside Lewis.

Really hope UK wise this can sneak a week at #1. It really deserves all the success it’s getting and the Brits nominations. Hoping it can even get Grammy nods next year.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've just listened to this album for the first time. I have LOVED the singles from this era so thought the album was worth a go. I was so impressed. He's got such a unique voice and he's crafted his own distinct sound brilliantly; it's nice to know that the singles aren't just flukes.

I WISH I could find a ticket for his 2021 tour somewhere; I am becoming a proper fan of Mr Styles.

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th June 2020, 06:46 PM

I hope you manage to get a tour ticket Slick, I cannot WAIT to go heart.gif seeing the secret show in London last December was electric and that was in a smaller venue, cannot wait to experience the album in an arena atmosphere.

The album is still such an exciting listen, too. The singles have been picked perfectly but there's so much to enjoy across the other tracks, it's varied but so cohesive, and I love that he's given some good thought to the tracklist as well - Golden and Fine Line are superb choices for album opener and closer.

Posted by: Klumzee 17th June 2020, 09:14 PM

I've listened to this album for the first time thanks to more time during lockdown and I'm really impressed! What's the first album like in comparison to this?

The first album laid some of the groundwork for this, I think. It's not quite as strong an effort (and there's nothing as epic as Sign of the Times on there) but I think it's worth a listen, if only to hear the progression from album 1 to 2. Other highlights for me are Two Ghosts, Sweet Creature and Ever Since New York heart.gif

I think 'varied but cohesive' is a great way to describe it. There's so many huge songs and potential singles. I am impressed. I am going to keep trying to get a gig ticket!!

Here's someone else who's decided to listen to the album for the first time. I have to say I'm impressed. Even the odd song that seemed a bit weak at the beginning gradually built up into something decent. The three final songs are particularly good. Well done Harry ohmy.gif

I absolutely love this album (and Harry). I wasn't really a fan of his first record, but this one is incredible. Falling in particular really hits me, though it was Adore You that encouraged me to listen to it last year.

Posted by: StupidLove 29th June 2020, 05:55 PM

Yeah the level of quality is remarkable, his second record is so so good.

Posted by: Spiceboy 29th June 2020, 06:25 PM

Harry on his own is better than One Direction ever were as a group!

Posted by: pippa 29th June 2020, 09:20 PM

As a solo artist he is appealing to an older age group.

Posted by: JosephStyles 29th June 2020, 09:21 PM

He's appealing to all ages I think - the fangirls haven't deserted him, they're still just as on board as they always were, but he's definitely attracted new older fans along the way!

Fine Line has helped achieve critical acclaim too.

^ Absolutely! If more artists could take Harry's lead instead of pretty much abandoning the era following album release, that would be great.

Posted by: *Callum 9th October 2020, 11:45 AM

It’s crazy how 42 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 of the UK albums chart a mere 6/7 years ago would’ve most likely equated to sales close to a million, yet this is only just achieving Platinum. Is it time to lower the certification thresholds?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th October 2020, 12:29 PM

Out of the irish top 10 for the first time this week. Hard to know if lowering certifications would be fair as sales are low for a while now until they back dated it a bit but, I think lowering certifications could be a good move though but id recommend increasing certification on singles, a million seller these days is nothing now where as before it was a huge achievement.

Harry Styles re-arranged the tracklisting for Fine Line "100 times"

QUOTE
Harry Styles has revealed that he re-arranged the tracklisting for Fine Line "just under" a 100 times before its release.

With his second studio album, the Sign of the Times hitmaker has had quite the year since its release - netting three Top 10 hits on the Official Singles Chart with Lights Up, Adore You and Watermelon Sugar (which also became his first US Number 1 this summer).

But it seems that Harry certainly put the work in to make the LP a success - he admitted to re-arranging the tracklist of the record nearly 100 times during its production.

Speaking to Variety, Harry said that his perfectionist streak partly came from his love of the "story" of an album.

"How do you want people to hear your work?" He asked. “Because I do sit down and listen to albums, and I care about the way that things run — how that makes me feel and the story that it tells. It’s only natural that I would put emphasis on that.”

Apparently, though, he always knew that Golden (now the album's fifth single and his sixth UK Top 40 single) would kick off the album, and that the record would conclude with the title track.

Fine Line debuted at Number 3 on the Official Albums Chart upon its release in December 2019 and has had massive staying power. In fact, it's currently the second biggest record of 2020 in the UK so far.

And to boot, both Watermelon Sugar and Adore You are in the Top 20 of the biggest songs of 2020 so far.

https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/harry-styles-re-arranged-the-tracklisting-for-fine-line-100-times__31775

Love the amount of effort Harry put into the tracklist, it's a part of the album process so easily neglected, particularly in the pop world. Golden and Fine Line work especially well in their slots!

Posted by: pippa 4th December 2020, 01:34 AM

How songs are positioned on an album does make a difference and I welcome Harry putting in so much effort deciding it.

Posted by: spiceboy 12th December 2020, 11:33 AM

It's such a shame this didn't go to #1 with it being the best selling album of 2020 so far!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 14th December 2020, 08:20 PM

Good to see its sales up now in the busy december, this month will help push t closer to 350k.

Posted by: pippa 28th December 2020, 08:17 PM

Fine Line on over 350,000 sales and still Top 20 is such a stellar performance.
Harry's debut is also pushing nicely away from 300,000.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 29th December 2020, 02:12 PM

Fine line is also back in the Irish top 10. Fine line has plenty of legs left in it yet aswell, it will easily manage 400k now. It's great that fine line gas also helped to push up sales of his debut.

Posted by: Liam.k. 4th January 2021, 04:32 PM

#2 in the mids! Fingers crossed this can reach #1 this month - I imagine Taylor will be safe for #1 this week but Harry could easily make it at another point as the release schedule is pretty dead (aside from January 15th).

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th January 2021, 04:52 PM

SO EXCITING! #2 this week would make me very happy even if #1 is even better - I never thought it'd go above #3! laugh.gif

Posted by: Jay❄ 4th January 2021, 05:36 PM

wub.gif Happy that this is on course to outpeak #3 - it definitely deserves to do that! Fingers crossed for #1 at some point.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 4th January 2021, 07:31 PM

I know its probbaly only going to repeak due to very low sales but it has sold so well and had a great chart run it deserves to get a new peak.

Posted by: pippa 4th January 2021, 08:53 PM

After a long wait, Fine Line could achieve a new chart peak.

Posted by: spiceboy 5th January 2021, 09:46 AM

This album totally deserves to get a new peak! I would really like it to get to #1 it really deserves it but if not a #2 at least is better than #3. Sales are so close though it's only 61 copies ahead of Future Nostalgia and 89 copies ahead of Confetti either one of those could easily overtake.

Posted by: pippa 5th January 2021, 02:13 PM

The label should try and support the opportunity of a new peak and possible Number 1.

Posted by: spiceboy 6th January 2021, 09:41 AM

Sadly down to #4 now but the gap is tiny!

Posted by: pippa 6th January 2021, 02:19 PM

The top 4 could sway any way now among the 4 as the week closes out.

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th January 2021, 02:21 PM

#3 in today's update, it still has a chance of #2 (sadly not #1)...!

Posted by: dannjohn 6th January 2021, 04:05 PM

And its 9.99£

The label should lower the price.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 6th January 2021, 08:41 PM

Def should lower the price to try and get those extra sales, really hope it can grab the number 2.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th January 2021, 02:40 PM

Its starting to look like fine line wont be repeaking after all cry.gif , i think 3 will now be its highest, fine line has been consistently selling 5k+ for weeks now and he looks to be on track to make 5k sales this week aswell.

Posted by: JosephStyles 7th January 2021, 06:25 PM

It's closing the gap on Little Mix so it has every chance tomorrow

Posted by: pippa 7th January 2021, 11:51 PM

Woohoo a new number 2 peak.

Posted by: Jay❄ 9th January 2021, 03:12 AM

wub.gif Great stuff. I hope Fine Line can dark horse its way to a week at #1 at some point, but it even being #2 is very pleasing! The #3 peak just didn't feel right for such a big album.

Posted by: spiceboy 9th January 2021, 12:59 PM

Genuinely pleased for him getting a new peak at #2 suits the album more than #3 ever did!

Posted by: Better Man 9th January 2021, 01:36 PM

I really wish this album to be Number 1 at some point.
Harry and his mgmt have done a perfect work with the album and its campaign. So only one thing they need is a luck.

Posted by: pippa 9th January 2021, 09:21 PM

With low sales and lack of new releases, Number 1 is not fully ruled out.
That said, the label need to try and help it there.

Posted by: pippa 11th January 2021, 02:25 PM

Fine Line should be a contender for Number 1 this week.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 11th January 2021, 08:39 PM

Not a chance, its number 5 with Little Mix at number 4 on 1,981k and Barry Gibb number 1 on over 8k, most likely to stay number 5 but could take number 4.

Great jump for Fine Line this week and will bring sales very close to 580,000 this week and with lots coming fine line will be double platinum very soon which is great, the album could manage close to another 100k by the end of the year.
