Afternoon all! As always, NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

Excited to hear some high new entries today, hoping Olivia keeps top 10 and Hozier and Artemas are as high as possible! Also would love Benson to be the "old rules" #1 this week. Slow It Down creeping into the top 40 would be a bonus but not expecting it this week, think its Spotify surge may have been a little too late x

Ooh yes, had forgotten we'd be getting a slightly extended chart today! Thanks for the reminder. Of course, we go by the Radio 1 broadcast here, so anything revealed on the OCC site between 5:45 and 6pm is still a spoiler until announced on R1.

Tyla
ART

4th single from TYLA
Released: 22nd March 2024
Label: FAX Records

Video

Biography

Tyla creates music that is at once indelibly South African and ambitiously global. It’s a unique balance, one molded by the sounds she heard as a child growing up in Johannesburg. Not only did Tyla (born in 2002) listen to plenty of homegrown music, including Kwaito and Afropop, but she was also exposed to ’90s American R&B greats like Aaliyah and Brandy. As with so many artists coming of age in the 21st century, the motivated teenager utilized social media to showcase her swiftly evolving talent; she then teamed up with South African producer Kooldrink for “Getting Late.” The 2019 single is a mesmerizing realization of Tyla’s love for bridging styles. The killer rhythm track is rooted in amapiano, and the singer’s translucent vocals reveal stunning versatility: hypnotic enough for dance music yet packed with pop’s effortless catchiness and R&B’s undiluted soulfulness. - Apple Music

Olivia Rodrigo
girl i've always been

Album track from GUTS (spilled)
Released: 22nd March 2024
Label: Olivia Rodrigo

Video

Biography

A few weeks after Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license” became the biggest song in the world, Saturday Night Live ran a sketch that featured a bunch of middle-aged guys shooting pool in a dive bar. One puts “drivers license” on the jukebox. Another complains that it just sounds like a teenage girl sitting alone at a piano. By the end of their discourse, they’re all in tears, singing along. “I was driving around my neighborhood listening to really sad songs, like, crying in the car,” Rodrigo told Apple Music. “And I got home and I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll write a song about this: crying in the car.’” Rodrigo had tapped into a universal experience: The middle-aged guys weren’t teenage girls, but they’d also driven around listening to sad songs. Rodrigo was just 17 when the song came out, but she had been getting ready for years. Born in Temecula, California, in 2003, she started lessons in piano, voice, and acting as a child, and went on to star in Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But, really, what could prepare you for breaking the global single-week streaming record for a female artist? Especially on your first single? And getting a nod from Taylor Swift in the meantime? (Along with “drivers license” winning the Apple Music Award for Top Song of the Year in 2021, Rodrigo’s debut LP, SOUR, was the Top Album of the Year and Rodrigo herself was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year.) Like Swift—and Lorde, too—Rodrigo has a knack for conjuring big feelings through small details: an ex singing along to their Billy Joel with his new love (“deja vu”), reading his self-help books “so you’d think that I was smart” (“enough for you”). Her content is all-caps, but her delivery is lowercase, lacing bedroom pop with a vulnerability and anger rare for teen pop: “Where’s my f***ing teenage dream?” she wonders on “brutal.” “I’m the biggest emo drama queen,” Rodrigo tells Apple Music. Maybe. But the key to letting it out is keeping it together. - Apple Music

Biography

The Blessed Madonna is the divine alias of Marea Stamper, the Kentucky-born, London-based DJ, producer, and label owner revered for her rapturous fusions of techno, disco, and electro. Stamper found community selling party gear and mixtapes at local raves as a teenager, and later cutting her teeth as a radio DJ at the University of Louisville. She relocated to Chicago, where she became resident DJ at the nightlife haven Smartbar and spearheaded the city’s Daphne Festival, which put a much-needed spotlight on women and non-binary DJs. Stamper's first original release in 2012, “Alright This Morning,” melded disco and Chicago house, laying the foundation for her acclaimed 2016 breakthrough, “He Is the Voice I Hear.” She moved to London following a sold-out 13-week run at XOYO nightclub in 2017, launched her record label We Still Believe in 2018, and was later tapped to helm Dua Lipa's 2020 LP Club Future Nostalgia, where she worked with the likes of Missy Elliott, Jamiroquai, and the other Madonna. - Apple Music

Nice to start off with some freshness although I'm not getting into this one too much yet. I think The Blessed Madonna's work on Club Future Nostalgia is still my favourite of hers to date.

This is light years above Asking! Still quite generic to my ears but not bad, and much less screechy x
