13th September 2020
It's 3 weeks on top for Miley Cyrus as 1989's Yello top 5 Of Course I'm Lying reaches a new peak of 3, still a great under-rated minor hit single. Jessi gets a first top 10, the US-born, South Korean-based singer doing what BTS can't quite manage lower down in my chart. LCD Soundsystem get a Human League classic a much-deserved top 10 spot 39 years late, and Groove Armada get their highest-charting track since Song 4 Mutya hit 8 in 2007. London Grammar get a first top 40 since Hell To The Liars hit 10 2 years ago, and Marty Wilde gets his first-ever top 40 52 years since he would last have had a chart hit (Abergavenny would definitely have been a big top 5 fave in summer '68), though he's had loads of songs chart, includign a chart-topper in 1968 for The Casuals - Jesamine - so pretty confident that's the longest wait any songwriter will ever have to wait to get a solo debut chart entry in my charts! It's a quiet week for new entries, giving me the chance to cut the chart down to 90 (phew!, 100 is too much work!) and so the highest new entry, is err, Steps! Cheesefest continues 22 years on, and just to underline I enjoy a slice of cheddar Saara Alto also debuts with the surprisingly decent collab with Baga Chipz. Saara has topped my charts with the fab Eurovision flop Monsters. Robbed she was! Travis are back rapidly after A Ghost, with Susanna Hoffs on tow, the Bangles-singer not having graced my charts since, errr, well, need to look that up! At least 24 years, gulp! Still, it extends her chart run to 35 years since The bangles debuted with the fab Going Down To Liverpool went top 10 (happy supporting Merseyside, even if it's an American who wrote it - Katrina of The Waves fame - and sang it). The Struts debut with the help of a famous friend for another Covid-themed track, giving Robbie 24 years of solo chart appearances, and 28 including Take That - and that's a fact I wouldn't have believed in 1992! Finally, another 80's act is back, Nik Kershaw sneaks in for the first time in over 30 years, while extending his run now to 37 years. He has, though, been knocking about as a songwriter in the interim, notably for Chesney Hawkes and Let Loose, and is still touring showcasing his new material (I saw him the other year and he's still fab, some 36 years since I caught his Riddle tour). 1 1 1 5 MIDNIGHT SKY Miley Cyrus 642600 2 2 1 3 ALL THE STARS Kendrick Lamar, SZA 400000 3 19 3 2 OF COURSE I’M LYING Yello 106000 4 4 4 4 TICK TOCK Clean Bandit & Mabel featuring 24kGoldn 158600 5 3 2 5 GHOSTKEEPER Klangkarussell & GIVVEN 430000 6 23 6 2 NUMB Jessi 74250 7 24 7 2 SECONDS (ELECTRIC LADY SESSIONS) LCD Soundsystem 69000 8 7 7 3 ELECTRIC LOVE BORNS 127000 9 5 1 8 SAY SOMETHING Kylie Minogue 745000 10 6 1 6 FREAK Doja Cat featuring Paul Anka 467000 11 8 8 5 BREATHE DEEPER Tame Impala 135500 12 12 12 7 HAPPINESS McFly 137300 13 20 13 4 CHINA SHOP St. Lucia 66450 14 27 14 2 LOVER 4 NOW Groove Armada featuring Todd Edwards 47400 15 10 10 6 AIR I BREATHE Sub Focus featuring Wilkinson 124700 16 11 5 10 AND IT BREAKS MY HEART LEON 368700 17 9 9 8 DANGEROUS LOVE Tiwa Savage 212300 18 28 18 2 THELMA AND LOUISE Anna Bergendahl 40300 19 21 19 7 TO SPEAK IS A SIN Pet Shop Boys 117150 20 13 10 7 MY FUTURE Billie Eilish 188250 21 16 1 7 RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED FROM Maxine Nightingale 469750 22 15 4 7 SUGAR MAN (THE GOLDFISH MIX) Rodriguez 324500 23 32 23 5 BLUEBIRD Miranda Lambert 74400 24 18 18 9 THIS FEELING Faithless featuring Suli Breaks and Nathan Ball 144700 25 14 7 7 ONE AND ONE MAKE FIVE Pet Shop Boys 207200 26 17 9 11 I USED TO BE COOL Bright Light Bright Light 242000 27 34 27 6 A LITTLE RESPECT Erasure 105400 28 38 28 4 BEND THE KNEE Bruno Martini, IZA & Timbaland 55000 29 22 7 7 GRAND ILLUSION (LE FLEX POOLSIDE MIX) Donna Summer 201700 30 39 30 6 REAL LOVE SONG Nothing But Thieves 81400 31 25 10 9 SUN IS SHINING Bob Marley Featuring Robin Schulz 221950 32 49 32 4 BABY IT’S YOU London Grammar 42300 33 36 33 11 ORDINARY WORLD Duran Duran 152800 34 37 34 4 TRAVEL BACK IN TIME Little Jinder’s Unreleased Romance & Little Jinder 50100 35 26 18 9 WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT Kygo & Tina Turner 153900 36 47 36 3 OVER NOW Calvin Harris, The Weeknd 31900 37 30 30 6 SUPERMAN Keith Urban 83100 38 40 38 7 SUNDOWN Gordon Lightfoot 98750 39 48 39 2 THIS FLIGHT TONIGHT Nazereth 29400 40 50 40 4 60’S WORLD Marty Wilde featuring Kim Wilde 33800 41 29 25 5 TO BE YOUNG Anne-Marie featuring Doja Cat 71850 42 31 3 13 HALLUCINOGENICS (SEEB REMIX) Matt Maeson 381550 43 33 4 10 SALAMANDER STREET Callum Beattie 347450 44 35 17 7 MARRIED IN VEGAS The Vamps 111550 45 66 45 3 DO WHAT YOU CAN Bon Jovi 20900 46 46 33 7 IN AND OUT OF LOVE Melanie C 86900 47 54 47 5 WILL YOU RETURN/WHEN YOU COME DOWN The Flaming Lips featuring Particle Kid 44700 48 58 48 5 LOVE AND AFFECTION Joan Armatrading 36400 49 60 49 4 SAILING The Sutherland Brothers 34100 50 52 50 4 SPAGHETTI City Of The Sun 44950 51 44 1 10 HOW LONG Ace featuring Paul Carrack 583400 52 67 52 2 MAJOR TOM (COMING HOME) Peter Schilling 18100 53 57 53 4 WHO’S LAUGHING NOW Ava Max 35450 54 62 54 4 TAKE YOU DANCING Jason Derulo 30200 55 87 55 3 SAME THINGS Georgia Lines 15400 56 59 56 5 MY WAY Aloe Blacc 33600 57 65 57 4 THING Edwina Biglet & The Miglets 27400 58 55 1 18 IN YOUR EYES Robin Schulz featuring Alida 965050 59 53 1 12 WATERMELON SUGAR Harry Styles 612200 60 85 60 3 NERVES OF STEEL Erasure 14400 61 41 20 8 BLACK DOG Arlo Parks 122200 62 69 62 4 DYNAMITE BTS 19000 63 68 63 4 THE PIE The Sutherland Brothers 22800 64 42 32 5 BACK AT WRONG Lola Lennox 67150 65 71 65 4 FINGERS CROSSED Agnes 17400 66 56 3 11 HALLUCINATE Dua Lipa 353950 67 91 67 2 MAYBE LOVE IS IN NYC Pretenders 8500 68 70 68 5 ON THE ROAD AGAIN First Aid Kit 28000 69 74 69 4 DOESN’T MATTER Gallant 15900 70 43 34 6 DELUDED Kate Miller-Heidke 67600 71 94 71 2 LEGENDS NEVER DIE Orville Peck & Shania Twain 7400 72 81 72 4 DREAM KID The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver 14200 73 75 73 6 SPIRIT OF LOVE Johnny Hates Jazz 21000 74 45 18 10 FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE Miranda Lambert featuring Maren Morris, Elle King, Ashley McBride, Tenille Townes, and Caylee Hammack 146450 75 95 75 2 TONIGHT I RUN Astraea 6500 76 83 76 2 LOADED Primal Scream 8200 77 89 77 2 CRAZY DAYS The Shires 6800 78 NEW 78 1 WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS Steps 4400 79 64 27 8 THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE LP 103200 80 88 80 3 HYGIENE STRIP Dubstar 7700 81 NEW 81 1 WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN Saara Alto & Baga Chipz 3800 82 90 82 4 THE DARK SYML 8100 83 86 83 4 ARMS OF MARY The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver 9200 84 NEW 84 1 THE ONLY THING Travis featuring Susanna Hoffs 3200 85 96 85 2 RADAR LOVE Golden Earring 4400 86 98 86 2 SCARLET The Rolling Stones featuring Jimmy Page 4000 87 99 87 2 WHAT’S YOUR PLEASURE? Thanks, and you're right about Lover 4 Now, such a pop tune! Maybe the odd production sound stopped it getting points. Ghostkeeper is among my fave-ever Aeroche entries, and there's quite the long list of 'em! |

Midnight Sky still #1 pity it won't get there officially like fellow 80s revival track Blinding Lights did.
So apparently This Flight Tonight by Nazareth is a cover of the Joni Mitchell song, I only know that original version and its a really nice song. On the subject of Joni Mitchell, it will be Christmas in a few months which means Ellie Goulding's version of river will probably be recharting top 100, Ellie's version was better than I expected as I usually don't like her voice much but I prefer the original. Ordinary World by Duran Duran is so apt for this year with the lyrics. A Little Respect by Erasure too with some of the lyrics. Is that why you have recharted them I wonder....For Ordinary World as well as the original which is perhaps my favourite Duran Duran song I really like the Aurora and Naimee Coleman cover of it from the year 2000. The LCD Soundsystem track vocal style reminds me of Sisters Of Mercy. It also reminds me in style of early Human League. Good BJSC entry anyway. The Groove Armada entry was good too, Song 4 Mutya from 2007 is a nice song but a bit too poppy but I really like the crazy sounding Get Down ft Stush, Red Rat from the same year.
