The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Saturdays from 12:00 to 14:00 CET and from 19:00 to 21:00 CET and on Sundays from 12:00 to 14:00 CET.
The chart seems to be a Top 40 (on a couple of occasions in 2016 MTV Europe also showed positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50). However, not all the positions are shown - some of them are skipped each week. The songs that are skipped on this "Euro Top Chart" seem to be one of two cases: either songs that aren't played on MTV Europe in general (especially if they don't have an official video yet); or when an artist has more than one song in the chart, not all are shown. It's also notable that the upper part of this chart is basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy. This post has been edited by bobiloko: Jan 5 2019, 03:53 PM |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of January 14, 2017: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 Sia - The Greatest 2 Down 28 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own Stay => 27 Ariana Grande - Side To Side 26 Lady GaGa - Million Reasons 11 Down 25 Charli XCX - After The Afterparty 6 Up 24 23 22 21 Calvin Harris - My Way 9 Up 20 19 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 2 Up 18 Alessia Cara - Scars To Your Beautiful 17 16 John Legend - Love Me Now 1 Up 15 Shawn Mendes - Mercy 1 Down 14 Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know 2 Up 13 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 5 Up 12 James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go 1 Up 11 Louisa Johnson - So Good 8 Up 10 Little Mix - Shout Out To My Ex Stay => 9 8 7 Bruno Mars - 24K Magic Stay => 6 Neiked - Sexual 17 Up 5 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles 4 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human Stay => 3 2 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy 4 Up 1 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye Stay => I'd like to point out the chart run of "Starboy" by The Weeknd and Daft Punk so far: 1-1-3-4-3-6-2-8-7-5-2-5-6-2 It has happened several times - "Starboy" starts falling, then jumps back to number 2! It seems like the runner-up position is a magnet for the song! |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of January 21, 2017: 40 39 38 37 36 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You 35 Calvin Harris - My Way 14 Down 34 33 32 Hailee Steinfeld, Grey & Zedd - Starving 31 Sia - The Greatest 2 Down 30 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 11 Down 29 Charli XCX - After The Afterparty 4 Down 28 Lady GaGa - Million Reasons 2 Down 27 26 25 24 Alan Walker - Alone 23 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 5 Up 22 Louisa Johnson - So Good 11 Down 21 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 8 Down 20 Shawn Mendes - Mercy 5 Down 19 18 17 Alessia Cara - Scars To Your Beautiful 1 Up 16 John Legend - Love Me Now Stay => 15 Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know 1 Down 14 Little Mix - Shout Out To My Ex 4 Down 13 12 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles 7 Down 11 10 9 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy 7 Down 8 Robbie Williams - Love My Life 7 Bruno Mars - 24K Magic Stay => 6 5 4 3 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 1 Up 2 Starley - Call On Me 1 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye Stay => "Rockabye" now scores a TENTH week at the top! The last song to reign for a longer time seems to be "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, which supposedly spent 11 weeks at number 1 (I only started watching this new version of MTV Europe's European chart during the second week "Happy" was at the top). The last song to spend 10 weeks at number 1 in the "old" period of the chart (until 2012) was "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye. And to find the last song to spend 11 weeks at the top we have to go back to 2003, when "Lose Yourself" by Eminem accomplished this... |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of January 28, 2017: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 23 Hailee Steinfeld, Grey & Zedd - Starving 9 Up 22 Charli XCX - After The Afterparty 7 Up 21 Lady GaGa - Million Reasons 7 Up 20 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens 10 Up 19 Sia - The Greatest 12 Up 18 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You 18 Up 17 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 6 Up 16 Sean Paul & Dua Lipa - No Lie 15 Louisa Johnson - So Good 7 Up 14 Shawn Mendes - Mercy 6 Up 13 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 8 Up 12 Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know 3 Up 11 Alessia Cara - Scars To Your Beautiful 6 Up 10 Little Mix - Shout Out To My Ex 4 Up 9 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles 3 Up 8 John Legend - Love Me Now 8 Up 7 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy 2 Up 6 Bruno Mars - 24K Magic 1 Up 5 JP Cooper - September Song 4 Robbie Williams - Love My Life 4 Up 3 Starley - Call On Me 1 Down 2 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 1 Up 1 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye Stay => "Rockabye" has now spent 11 weeks at number 1, equalling the achievement of "Happy" by Pharrell Williams (supposedly), "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, "Asereje" by Las Ketchup, "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue and "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins. So who's ahead? If we don't consider the period between August 2012 and the end of 2013 (when no European chart was broadcast on MTV Europe) and the times before September 1989 (for which we have no archive), only 2 songs have been at the top for 12 weeks - "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio and "Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira... |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of February 4, 2017: 40 39 38 37 36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 23 Tom Zanetti - You Want Me 22 Nevada, Mark Morrison & Fetty Wap - The Mack 21 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 8 Down 20 Charli XCX - After The Afterparty 2 Up 19 Lady GaGa - Million Reasons 2 Up 18 DJ Snake & Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You Stay => 17 Little Mix - Shout Out To My Ex 7 Down 16 Shawn Mendes - Mercy 2 Down 15 Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know 3 Down 14 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles 5 Down 13 The xx - On Hold 12 Robbie Williams - Love My Life 8 Down 11 Bruno Mars - 24K Magic 5 Down 10 Alan Walker - Alone 9 James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go 8 John Legend - Love Me Now Stay => 7 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy Stay => 6 JP Cooper - September Song 1 Down 5 Little Mix - Touch 4 Sean Paul & Dua Lipa - No Lie 12 Up 3 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye 2 Down 2 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human Stay => 1 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill It's no surprise that Ed Sheeran is the new number 1. What's shocking is the song which he conquers the chart with - "Castle On The Hill" and not "Shape Of You"! I think the explanation is that the official video of "Castle On The Hill" was released earlier than the official video of "Shape Of You"... "Castle On The Hill" becomes Ed Sheeran's third chart-topper after "Sing" and "Thinking Out Loud". We're waiting for his fourth! In other news, Little Mix appear in the chart simultaneously with 2 different songs - "Touch" and "Shout Out To My Ex". This is actually very unusual - in almost all cases when an artist has 2 (or more) songs in the chart, MTV Europe play just one of them... Unless one (or both) are collaborations - as Sean Paul demonstrates at number 3 and number 4... |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of February 11, 2017: 50 49 48 47 46 45 44 Train - Play That Song 43 42 41 Calum Scott - Dancing On My Own 40 39 The Chainsmokers & Halsey - Closer 18 Down 38 37 36 Shawn Mendes - Mercy 20 Down 35 The xx - On Hold 22 Down 34 Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles 20 Down 33 32 31 30 Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know 15 Down 29 28 27 26 25 Bruno Mars - 24K Magic 14 Down 24 23 Alan Walker - Alone 13 Down 22 Robbie Williams - Love My Life 10 Down 21 20 James Arthur - Say You Won't Let Go 11 Down 19 18 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely 17 John Legend - Love Me Now 9 Down 16 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - Starboy 9 Down 15 14 13 JP Cooper - September Song 7 Down 12 11 Sage The Gemini - Now And Later 10 9 Little Mix - Touch 4 Down 8 Starley - Call On Me 7 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye 4 Down 6 Sean Paul & Dua Lipa - No Lie 2 Down 5 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 3 Down 4 3 2 1 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You This week's chart-topper was completely expected. Still, what Ed Sheeran has done is unique! There has been no other time in this chart when an artist reaches number 1 with a song ("Castle On The Hill") one week and reaches number 1 with ANOTHER song ("Shape Of You") the FOLLOWING week! I have no idea when such a thing might happen again... Another notable thing - last year there were 2 instances when MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40. Now the same occurs - so, in theory, the chart may be a Top 50 but this shows very rarely... |

Unfortunately, this edition of the chart is an example of something I'm opposing. I don't think songs should appear in a EUROPEAN chart if they're only having success in the UK singles chart (and some of them are not doing well even there!)... |

"Where's The Revolution" is Depeche Mode's first appearance in the chart since "Wrong" in 2009. And Sia's new single is not the first one titled "Move Your Body" to appear in MTV Europe's European chart - Eiffel 65's "Move Your Body" reached number 3 in 2000. |

However, they have always debuted AFTER the contest... Now Italy's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 - Francesco Gabbani - appears with "Occidentali's Karma" more than a month BEFORE the contest! It's always fantastic to see MTV Europe play songs in languages other than English!... And if I'm not seriously wrong, this is the first song in Italian in the chart since Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP's 2010 number 1 "We No Speak Americano" (which is technically in Neapolitan)... Also, this is the first time MTV Europe plays both of Ed Sheeran's singles during the same edition of the chart. In fact, "Castle On The Hill" appears only for the second time after it topped the chart for a single week in the edition of February 4. Once "Shape Of You" replaced it at number 1, MTV Europe stopped playing "Castle On The Hill" (it's usual for them to play just one song by an artist during a particular edition of the chart)... However, it seems like Ed Sheeran's complete chart dominance has made MTV Europe decide to reflect his success and play both "Castle On The Hill" and "Shape Of You" - at least this time! |

Here is the chart of April 1, 2017: 50 49 48 47 46 45 44 43 42 Sean Paul & Dua Lipa - No Lie 3 Down 41 Stormzy - Big For Your Boots 40 Alan Walker - Alone 8 Down 39 Rag'n'Bone Man - Human 13 Down 38 Little Mix - Touch 1 Down 37 Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma 13 Down 36 35 34 33 32 31 The Chainsmokers - Paris 18 Down 30 Train - Play That Song 10 Down 29 28 27 26 Ariana Grande & John Legend - Beauty And The Beast 25 Lorde - Green Light 11 Down 24 Maroon 5 - Cold 9 Down 23 Bruno Mars - That's What I Like 6 Down 22 21 Clean Bandit, Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye 2 Down 20 19 18 17 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - I Feel It Coming 1 Down 16 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony 15 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely 14 13 12 11 Zayn & Taylor Swift - I Don't Wanna Live Forever 3 Down 10 9 Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios 2 Down 8 Martin Jensen - Solo Dance 2 Up 7 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 2 Down 6 5 4 3 2 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You 1 Down 1 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm 1 Up This is the fifth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40. They also seem to be more willing to play 2 songs by one artist during one and the same edition of the chart - they already did it last time with Ed Sheeran and now they also played both "Rockabye" and "Symphony" by Clean Bandit... Speaking of Ed Sheeran, very strangely, "Shape Of You" is replaced at the top by "Chained To The Rhythm". It becomes Katy Perry's fifth chart-topper in MTV Europe's European chart after "I Kissed A Girl", "Hot 'N' Cold", "California Gurls" and "E.T.". "Roar" certainly would have been number 1 as well if there had been a European chart broadcast on MTV Europe in 2013... |

Here is the chart of April 8, 2017: 50 49 48 47 46 45 44 43 Linkin Park & Kiiara - Heavy 42 41 Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma 4 Down 40 Lana Del Rey - Love 39 38 37 36 35 34 Zayn & Taylor Swift - I Don't Wanna Live Forever 23 Down 33 The Chainsmokers - Paris 2 Down 32 Take That - Giants 31 Jon Bellion - All Time Low 30 29 Ariana Grande & John Legend - Beauty And The Beast 3 Down 28 27 Maroon 5 - Cold 3 Down 26 25 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely 10 Down 24 23 Imagine Dragons - Believer 22 21 20 Lorde - Green Light 5 Up 19 Martin Solveig - Places 18 17 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - I Feel It Coming Stay => 16 Stargate, Pink & Sia - Waterfall 15 Bruno Mars - That's What I Like 8 Up 14 13 Martin Jensen - Solo Dance 5 Down 12 11 10 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 3 Down 9 Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios Stay => 8 Jax Jones - You Don't Know Me 7 6 5 4 3 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm 2 Down 2 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You Stay => 1 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony 15 Up This is the sixth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40. It looks like DJ's called Martin are in fashion right now! There are three Martins in the chart simultaneously - Martin Garrix, Martin Solveig and Martin Jensen! And "Symphony" becomes Clean Bandit's third chart-topper after "Rather Be" and "Rockabye" as well as Zara Larsson's second number 1; her first was also a collaboration - "This One's For You" with David Guetta. |

Something even more remarkable is that they played a total of 25 songs from the chart! They hadn't played that many songs from a single edition of the chart for a long, long time. |

Here is the chart of April 29, 2017: 50 49 48 47 46 45 44 43 42 41 Will.I.Am - FIYAH 40 Jamiroquai - Cloud 9 39 38 Louisa Johnson - Best Behaviour 1 Down 37 Maroon 5 - Cold 4 Down 36 Martin Solveig - Places 5 Down 35 34 Imagine Dragons - Believer 4 Down 33 32 31 30 29 28 ALMA - Chasing Highs 10 Up 27 Stargate, Pink & Sia - Waterfall 4 Down 26 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely 1 Down 25 The Weeknd & Daft Punk - I Feel It Coming 4 Down 24 Linkin Park & Kiiara - Heavy 23 22 21 20 19 18 Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios 1 Down 17 Jason Derulo - Swalla 1 Up 16 Martin Jensen - Solo Dance Stay => 15 Bruno Mars - That's What I Like 4 Up 14 Jax Jones - You Don't Know Me 5 Down 13 12 11 Little Mix & Machine Gun Kelly - No More Sad Songs Stay => 10 9 8 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 7 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm 1 Down 6 5 4 Rag'n'Bone Man - Skin 4 Up 3 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You 1 Up 2 1 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony Stay => This is the eighth time in 2017 that MTV Europe played songs placed below the Top 40. And I really disapprove of songs appearing in this chart when they are nowhere to be seen in ANY European chart - like "FIYAH" by Will.I.Am... |

Here is the chart of May 6, 2017: 40 Stargate, Pink & Sia - Waterfall 13 Down 39 38 ALMA - Chasing Highs 10 Down 37 Maroon 5 - Cold Stay => 36 35 Linkin Park & Kiiara - Heavy 11 Down 34 33 32 Imagine Dragons - Believer 2 Up 31 30 G-Eazy & Kehlani - Good Life 29 28 27 26 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely Stay => 25 24 Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE. 23 Martin Solveig - Places 13 Up 22 21 20 Little Mix & Machine Gun Kelly - No More Sad Songs 9 Down 19 Martin Jensen - Solo Dance 3 Down 18 17 Bruno Mars - That's What I Like 2 Down 16 Disciples - On My Mind 15 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 7 Down 14 Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios 4 Up 13 Lorde - Green Light 12 11 Jason Derulo - Swalla 6 Up 10 9 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm 2 Down 8 Jax Jones - You Don't Know Me 6 Up 7 Rag'n'Bone Man - Skin 3 Down 6 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony 5 Down 5 4 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You 1 Down 3 2 1 Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - Despacito This is a historical edition of the chart! "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee becomes the first song in Spanish to become number 1 since "La Tortura" by Shakira and Alejandro Sanz back in 2005 - 12 years ago! It's also Daddy Yankee's first appearance in MTV Europe's European chart - "Gasolina" never charted in spite of having success across Europe in 2005. |

Euro Top 40 - (as broadcast on MTV Europe)
Here is the chart of May 13, 2017: 40 39 38 37 Linkin Park & Kiiara - Heavy 2 Down 36 Paramore - Hard Times 35 34 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely 8 Down 33 J Hus - Did You See 32 G-Eazy & Kehlani - Good Life 2 Down 31 30 Martin Solveig - Places 7 Down 29 Martin Jensen - Solo Dance 10 Down 28 27 Lorde - Green Light 14 Down 26 25 24 23 22 Charlie Puth - Attention 21 Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill 6 Down 20 19 Little Mix & Machine Gun Kelly - No More Sad Songs 1 Up 18 Anne-Marie - Ciao Adios 4 Down 17 Burak Yeter - Tuesday 16 15 Julia Michaels - Issues 14 Zedd & Alessia Cara - Stay 13 Jax Jones - You Don't Know Me 5 Down 12 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm 3 Down 11 10 9 Rag'n'Bone Man - Skin 2 Down 8 Kygo & Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me 7 6 5 Jason Derulo - Swalla 6 Up 4 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You Stay => 3 2 Clean Bandit & Zara Larsson - Symphony 4 Up 1 Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee - Despacito Stay => For the second time Zedd appears in the chart in a collaboration (this time - with Alessia Cara) where the song title includes the word "stay"! In 2014 he reached number 11 with "Stay The Night" - a collaboration with Hayley Williams! And it's always great to see in MTV Europe's European chart a song that is having success across Europe in spite of not appearing in the UK singles chart - like "Tuesday" by Burak Yeter! Also, unless I'm mistaken, Burak Yeter is the first Turkish act in the chart since Tarkan peaked at number 13 with "Şımarık" in 1999! |
