BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 22nd May 2021, 04:52 PM

It could be a second #1 single for Olivia Rodrigo this year, if good 4 u can overtake Tion Wayne & Russ Millions' Body. Expect a big new entry for BTS with their new single Butter, plus releases from Anne-Marie & Niall Horan with Our Song, Galantis/David Guetta/Little Mix with Heartbreak Anthem and Lil Nas X with SUN GOES DOWN

Olivia Rodrigo could pull off the chart double with her debut album SOUR, but she’s up against Twenty One Pilots with their fifth album Scaled And Icy and P!nk's live hits collection All I Know So Far - Setlist. Gary Numan's Intruder is among the new releases along with albums from Waterparks, Lord Huron, Gruff Rhys and Billie Marten

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.

with it doing better than Confetti did on spotify I'm hoping this can be a solid top 15 debut, and could even shimmy its way into the top 10 if it keeps gaining.

Posted by: Hadji 22nd May 2021, 09:00 PM

I wasn’t expecting Olivia's album to clog up the top 50 on Spotify. Hopefully, some of the tracks fall and I hope that DL doesn’t get a reset

Are you completely oblivious to her having 2 singles from the album that had absolutely monstrous streaming figures xx

Posted by: Berserker32 23rd May 2021, 07:36 AM

What sort of album figures are we expecting from Olivia ?
I am hoping Gary Numan can get a Top 3 album with his new studio album Intruder but there is a bit of competition this week.

Posted by: JCR 23rd May 2021, 12:58 PM

I’m an old fart who thinks the most surprising thing about Olivia is she released a record with a parental advisory warning while she’s still the lead in a Disney tv show.

Standards are slipping, I tells you. [Shakes fist at cloud 😉]

I am thinking 40-45k doesn’t seem out of the question. Clearly has streaming on her side. Just a case of how she is doing with physicals & downloads. Has a clear online fan base already so expecting good support there. Bring on Monday’s midweek flash. dance.gif

Olivia Rodrigo looks set to score her second UK Number 1 single on Friday as Good 4 U takes the lead in this week’s Official Singles Chart race.

The Californian singer/songwriter and actress’s latest track entered the chart at Number 2 last week and is now on course to topple reigning chart lords Tion Wayne & Russ Millions as Body slips two places to Number 3 midweek.

Pop-punk hit Good 4 U is one of three tracks from Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, Sour, that currently dominate the midweek Official Chart Top 10 after 48 hours; previous single Déjà Vu is at 5, while album opener Brutal starts the week at Number 10.

Olivia’s breakthrough chart smash Drivers License, which spent 9 weeks at Number 1 earlier this year, is the UK’s biggest single of 2021 so far. See Olivia Rodrigo’s UK chart history.

K-pop outfit BTS are on track to bag the UK’s highest new entry of the week as Butter opens at Number 2.

Heartbreak Anthem - the new collaboration that sees Little Mix teaming up with Swedish production duo Galantis and DJ/producer David Guetta starts out inside the Official Chart First Look Top 10 at Number 8 – the second highest new entry of the week so far.

Elsewhere, a new entry for Anne-Marie and Niall Horan who join forces on new track Our Song (12).

Huge climbs are on the cards this week for 21 year-old British singer/songwriter Mimi Webb as Good Without jumps 13 places to Number 11, while Years & Years’ latest single Starstruck rockets 25 places following the release of a new remix with Kylie Minogue.

DJ/producer Majestic could be heading for a new peak position on the Official Chart on Friday, as his rework of Boney M’s Rasputin climbs six rungs to Number 16 so far in its ninth week in the Top 40. The tracks current best to date is Number 18.

And finally Coldplay’s Higher Power (20) climb 5 places back into the midweek Top 20 following their Glastonbury livestream appearance yesterday.

Bit late on catching up as I was at work, but I’m pleasantly surprised at starstruck climbing all the way to #19 didn’t expect the remix to boost it that much! Great to see Heartbreak Anthem at #8 hope it can keep its top 10 position by Friday. BTS song isn’t sounding too bad after a couple listens feel it could grow on me, not sure if it will hold up and stay top 3 by Friday, we will see.

Posted by: Ho-Lee Smokes 23rd May 2021, 08:57 PM

Maybe BTS might miss the top five this week.

I’m sure Brutal will be higher tomorrow as it will have a fair amount of streaming missing, I can see either being around 6/7 in tomorrows update.

Posted by: Smint 23rd May 2021, 09:36 PM

Oh “Brutal” is excellent! Reminds me a bit to Elastica and love the cinematic ending.

Hope by some miracle it stays longer than 1 week in the chart. Or it may get pushed as a single later.

Posted by: Hadji 24th May 2021, 12:15 AM

Unfortunately, Russ and Tion will knock BTS out of the top 2

Surprised Olivia is only that far ahead in the albums, thought she would be miles ahead already. Should extend easily but stilll

Posted by: Mangø 24th May 2021, 04:12 PM

Surprised Pink is that low, I mean I know it's only a (mostly) live album but thought she'd at least show up higher than Gary Numan, if not Twenty One Pilots. I expect Gary Numan will fall to #4 or #5 anyway.

Posted by: LMLou 24th May 2021, 04:13 PM

I didn’t even think Olivia would be ahead in the first mids, thought the other big new entries would be more front loaded and she would overtake with streaming added so I think it’s great she’s already got quite a lead

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th May 2021, 04:14 PM

Was hoping Pink would be Top 3 but a live album is always hard to call, if she stays Top 4 or 5 il be happy, 21 Pilots i was sure would be at least Number 2 and possibly Number 1 so im really surprised they are only Number 3 not that number 3 is bad.

Definitely great for her, think I worded it wrong. With streaming she should get some good numbers! Great for a new artist, album is stunning too!

The BTS song will fall out of the Top 10 next week anyway. Their sales are always very front loaded.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 24th May 2021, 04:24 PM

So P!nk could actually chart higher with a live album than her GH album managed, I wasn't expecting that!

Posted by: Lomadz 24th May 2021, 04:25 PM

Big for Pink, was expecting low top 10

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 24th May 2021, 04:26 PM

For a live album Pink is doing well and hooefully it can go silver at the least

Posted by: Berserker32 24th May 2021, 04:39 PM

Are there no sales figures then?
Any idea what the Gary Numan 'Intruder' sales figure is?
I would estimate it at around 20k.
Not too sure about Numan falling back to No-4 or No-5 though. His sales seem to be quite strong. Would just like to have known the figures.

Posted by: Bré 24th May 2021, 04:41 PM

That seems like a bit of an underperformance for twenty one pilots although to be fair this is without a vinyl release at the moment. Pleasantly surprised to see Gary Numan ahead of them at the moment regardless, would love if he can hold onto #2!

Olivia must be pulling in some pretty strong pure sales after all, unless it is just that both Gary and twenty one pilots are severely underperforming. Was never doubting that Olivia would be huge on streams (though she's doing even better than I expected) but her pure sales were a complete question mark.

Looks like all three of My Bloody Valentine's albums will be getting new peaks this week - they've never charted higher than #24 in the album chart before (and "m b v" never charted when it was released due to how it was distributed).

The Official Charts Company Midweek Sales Flash is in, and Olivia Rodrigo leads the way in both the singles and albums chart.

Last week's No.2, the American singer's Good 4 U (32,667 sales) has raced into an early lead ahead of BTS' Butter (21,588 sales), while Tion Wayne & Russ Millions' reigning chart-topper Body (21,491 sales) falls to No.3,

Kiss Me More (13,917 sales) by Doja Cat ft. Sza is up 4-3 and Rodrigo's Deja Vu (13,528 sales) ascends 11-5. Meanwhile, The Galantis/David Guetta/Little Mix collaboration Heartbreak Anthem (9,210 sales) debuts at No.8. And despite receiving nul points at Saturday's Eurovision Song Contest, James Newman's Embers is a new entry at No.42 with sales of 3,661.

Elsewhere, in the albums chart, Olivia Rodridgo's debut studio LP Sour is out in front with 23,031 sales. Gary Numan's Intruder leads the chasing pack on 15,530 sales, followed by Twenty One Pilots' Scaled And Icy (No.3, 10,889 sales) at No.3, All I Know So Far - Setlist (No.4, 8,438 sales) by Pink and the reissued Loveless (6,080 sales) by My Bloody Valentine, which completes an all-new Top 5.

It wouldn't surprise me if the vinyl added another 10k or so with their fanbase, so I don't think it would be too far off Trench had it been a normal release - especially given this campaign has been much shorter than the last with less promotion. It kinda feels like a bridge between Trench and their next album.

'We No Speak Americano' is actually literally not Italian - the song it's sampling is in the Neapolitan language (which is similar to Italian but technically a distinct language rather than a dialect).

On a related note, if 'SHUM' holds in the top 100 I have to assume that is by far and away the most successful Ukrainian language song ever in the UK? laugh.gif

When was the last time a foreign language Eurovision song made the top 40? Looking sewn up now for Måneskin after an impressive hold on Spotify today. The two recent ones ‘Think About Things’ and ‘Arcade’ are both English and the whole invasion in 2014 comprised of English language songs too. Really can’t remember!

Posted by: Bré 25th May 2021, 05:02 PM

Good question - I guess 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai' in 2007 was mostly not in English but then in fairness it didn't really have substantial lyrics in any language laugh.gif of course the only other fully non-English language winners this side of the millennium are 'Molitva' (which missed the UK top 100) and 'Amar Pelos Dois' (which scraped in at #97), and it's not particularly common for non winning songs to make the top 40 so there must be very few!

(have just realised that I guess 'Dancing Lasha Tumbai' can also be counted at least partly as a Ukrainian language song that of course did a little better in the charts than 'SHUM' lol - but the Ukrainian section of it is fairly minimal, likewise there were also some Ukrainian lyrics in Ruslana's 'Wild Dances' which charted at #47 in the UK)

Posted by: AcerBen 25th May 2021, 05:19 PM

I reckon these are the only foreign-language Eurovision hits of the last 30 years - and they were often translated to English before then!

Dancing Lasha Tumbai #23
Wild Dances #47
Allez Olla Olé #81
Moustache #89
Nocturne #90
Amar Pelos Dois #97
Dancing In The Rain #102
Molitva #112
La Voix #138
Party For Everybody #159

ah, I was just thinking of Eurovision, didn't cross my mind that opera singers used to have chart hits on occasion.
now you mention Bocelli, I now recall Pavarotti did make it to #12 with Nessun Dorma in 2007 after he died, although it previously went #2 in 1990 so yours may well be the newest recording.

I already knew about WNSA being in Neapolitan as well which is why I specified it wasn't to count despite its being an Italian dialect (or as it turns out whole separate language as per Bre's post).

G'won Gary Numan *.* I really like what I've heard from the album, especially the title track! Great for Olivia too of course.

Posted by: Slayer 25th May 2021, 09:23 PM

Hoping Heartbreak Anthem makes a Top 10 debut!

Posted by: Tafty 25th May 2021, 09:27 PM

I've heard it once and I was surprised at how much I wasn't hating it tbh. It's pretty decent. But Gary still has that fanbase that will buy every copy of every version at least once (literally what someone did on Friday on my last day at work for the week laugh.gif - and they bought the 2 copies of his picture disc vinyl that we had)

I wonder how much the sales of both Olivia and especially Twenty One Pilots (who seem to be one of the constant sellers on vinyl for us) would have been boosted by a vinyl release? I could definitely see TOP much closer to 20k rn tbh and above Gary. A shame sad.gif

Posted by: steve201 25th May 2021, 09:48 PM

Yeh the title track got to my PC top 20 which I never thought I would see in 2021 but it’s really great so class to see him hitting 20k by Friday which would be an amazing score. Also Olivia looking on for 40k which is stunning and more importantly streaming will be high for her over the summer so could be a decent seller by the end of year.
Also at the top 4 looking likely to be breaking 10k!!

Posted by: Berserker32 25th May 2021, 10:13 PM

Numan's sales figures are excellent.
He must be one of the few artists who have increased sales of studio albums over the past 10 years.
I guess the trend is going in the opposite direction.
Gary does have a hard-core following but as a fan myself I think a lot of the credit for the new interest in him and his music must go to his producer Ade Fenton. He is the one who has made his music relevant again.

8 new entries in the top 40 is rare assuming they all stay here. Never heard of Dream but it’s pretty good. Nice to get more indie-ish music in the top 40.

Wondering if it's possible 'SOUR' could finally end the streak of albums only spending one week at #1 - there doesn't appear to be any particularly huge new releases next week (guessing easy life are likely to be the highest new entry but Olivia's streaming numbers are showing no sign of slowing down yet, can easily see her second week numbers being more than enough to beat them).

I was wondering the same thing actually. I'd say there's a very good chance! (Although I don't know much about that Lana album that's coming out on Monday 1st, could that throw a spanner in the works?)

I think the Lana album was pushed back to 4th July (unless that's a completely different album, it's hard to tell with her sometimes as she keeps changing the titles of her albums before releasing them). I don't think she would get #1 with a midweek and presumably digital only release anyway though.

It's a live album. It was never going to sell much beyond the first few days or so when her fans have picked up their copies. I doubt there's much casual interest in it from the general public.

Never known a week one release to be so cheap.
Is this allowed in he chart rules?

they can put it on sale at 0.99 if they want

The issue with Pink's album is that she has less streaming sales in the Tuesday midweeks than in the Monday midweeks, for some unknown reason.

Monday midweeks:
Total: 8,438
Physicals: 4,715
Downloads: 2,360
Streaming: 1,363

Tuesday midweeks:
Total: 8,543
Physicals: 5,484 (+769)
Downloads: 2,529 (+169)
Streaming: 530 (-833)

I mainly only bought it physically because of that price in HMV, so I imagine she's picked up a fair few sales that way.

Asda weren't stocking it curiously, not sure about the other supermarkets but maybe the success of the album has taken them all by surprise. Hopefully they will begin belatedly stocking it after this week.

It will be GREAT to see an album stay at No.1, so fingers crossed. Not that I'd begrudge Easy Life as I like what I've heard from them so far. Texas will be top five I'm sure - and I will buy it as their new material is their best in 15 years - but I would be surprised if they sell a lot more than 10k.

Posted by: jimwatts 26th May 2021, 11:19 AM

Maybe they mistakenly duplicated streams between the live album and Greatest Hits So Far, where songs appear on both? In which case I thought they would have stayed with the live album as it's the higher seller this week, but I can never remember the rules about streams going to different albums by the same artist.

Posted by: Bjork 26th May 2021, 11:39 AM

yes, it counts towards the GH with more pure sales

but I think there is also a rule about live versions not being combined?

in this case, the new album is not a GH but a live album, so not sure. I mean, if you stream the original So What, it shouldn't count towards the new live album... cos the new album doesn't have a studio version...

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 26th May 2021, 12:37 PM

It's a strange situation that I hope they rectify for the live album or otherwise its sales will completely plummet if the allocations from streaming all go towards the original greatest hits.

Posted by: Bré 26th May 2021, 12:46 PM

My guess is they were mistakenly treating it as a Greatest Hits in the early updates (in which case don't expect them to reverse this change - looks like she should still top 10k for the week anyway).

The latest version of the Chart Rules contains the following:

QUOTE
Where an album is flagged as a Live release, only live versions of tracks from the project will be included in the streaming factor calculation
It still leaves a question as to whether streams of tracks from the live album are also being added to streams of the corresponding studio versions on the Greatest Hits release. The chart rules about this merely state

QUOTE
Where a track appears on more than one album by an artist, streams of this track will be attributed equally to each studio album and a maximum of one greatest hits album (the hits title with the highest sales DUS for that given week, or other hits title nominated in advance by label).

Finally, I'm assuming streams of the live tracks count towards sales of the studio versions of the tracks for both the weekly Singles chart and also lifetime sales of the track. The Singles chart rules do allow for sales of alternate versions, including live versions of the song, to be combined with the original.

Posted by: jimwatts 26th May 2021, 03:14 PM

It does look like Greatest Hits So Far has been given a lot of extra streams this week, presumably from the live versions, as it's been #39 in the mids compared to #67-71 for the last couple of weeks.

You're obviously not familiar with the core Numan fan mindset.

For them, it borders on obsession.

They'll have to own each of the 12 variants and then add duplicate copies.

I'm aware of a hard core of fans buying at least 20 - 30 copies of this release.

A pre order period of 26 months also has to be factored in.

Just 3.000 buying an average of 6 or 7 copies.

I don't doubt that his sales are bumped up a fair amount by multibuying but presumably the bulk of that (and the pre-orders) was accounted for by the Monday update, he has still been selling well since then.
