I apparently went on a whole ramble about the song in September 2019 without actually saying where I think it should have charted.
Uh. Some similar stuff made the lower top 10 around that time. So. I'll go with that, I guess. Even though I like it, it doesn't command attention as an album launcher like Look At Me and It's Raining Men did. But. I will say...I do find the radio blacklisting she experienced to be really annoying. She had four solo number ones and another four top tens at that point. Her chart placings back then *always* far outperformed her level of radio support. Technically, that trend continued with Desire as her support was zilch. I guess we'll never know what happened in the biz, and if she just stepped on the wrong toes in the industry or what. But I don't like that her success was promptly ended by some forces in radio basically saying "okay, sweetie. We think you're done now." I guess we'll never know what happened in the biz, and if she just stepped on the wrong toes in the industry or what. But I don't like that her success was promptly ended by some forces in radio basically saying "okay, sweetie. We think you're done now." I think the sudden turn in Geri's fortunes had a few reasons: - The public perception of her was really turning sour. She was no longer really seen as a music act, more like a celebrity and an annoying one at that. - There's Something About Geri documentary - it basically killed her career from then on... - Anti-Spice backlash.. After 2000-2001, any solo Spice saw a reverse of their public perception and backlash, including industry removing much of their support and the general public moving on from them as pop stars. Mel C suffered from this, so did Emma (even when she was getting her best reviews and album sales), Victoria Mel B and Geri specially... It was a tough period when the Spices werent really liked at all as solo acts specially, but also as a group. Which is very sad as the sexism they experienced from their own peers was terrible. The only other thing that killed the song and the album were the fact that the singles werent that good. I will die on this hill if I have to.... Both Ride It and Desire were miles below the quality of her first run of singles. Granted, her second album singles werent that amazing either, but at least they felt more genuine and better thought-through... Ride It and Desire were really cliché and lame productions, in my opinion... They were no It's Raining Men or Look At Me... At the time of their release, just like with the other solo Spice efforts, they were no longer in a position where they could get decent chart positions even with middle of the road songs (hello Going Down, hello What I Am....) BUT they could get minor hits if the songs were indeed great, just look at the success of Maybe, Mel C's Loving You, etc... hec even What Took You So Long and It's Raining Men managed to cut through the anti-solo Spice backlash that existed at the time which was at its peak partly because of Geri's own solo career tactics |

It's very unpopular opinion, but four Spices (both Mel, but especially Geri and Emma) have better solo back catalogue than Spice Girls.
