Castle On the Hill only holds the top spot for a week, this week dropping to #10. To be fair, it’s the track’s fifth week in the top 10, having spent every week there since its debut – and given that my charts are fast-moving, this was impressive. He’s replaced at the top by, as predicted by commenters last week, new talent Tal, who’s launching an international career this year after domestic European success. It’s Tal’s third week in the top 5 after a strong debut, following a few weeks of slow-burning outside the top 40.

It’s all change in the top 10 this week, with only Tal, #2’s Dreezy, Charli XCX, 2NE1 holding #6 and Ed remaining there from last week. Highest new entry goes to Martin Garrix and Dua Lipa, a track that might be challenging to become Lipa’s second #1 on the chart in coming weeks. Other new entries this week come from Lost Kings with Tinashe, Sophie-Ellis Bextor, Rihanna’s first of 2017 following a stellar 2016, Phoebe Ryan, Mariah, Adrian Lux, Busted (!), Katy Perry’s Chained to the Rhythm, Lucy Spraggan, Cold War Kids, and actually a few others. A real bunch this week – and all new releases too!

Not heard your #1 but I've liked a of her other songs so will have to check that one out.

Brill to see Garrix enter high, an amazing track from him & Dua Lipa is brilliant too.

Other faves are After The Afterparty, Shed A Light & Ocean Hill - heard that at the weekend & really liked it

For the second week running, it’s a new #1, making Ed the shortest-running holder of the title in 12 weeks, as well as so far this year. Tal’s Slow Down the Flow is not a track I ever expected to take the top spot as it took a few weeks to grow on me; I first came across it in about December or the start of Jan. It’s Tal’s first and highest chart entry. Dreezy (ft. Jeremih), Nelly Furtado, Missy Elliot, and Sage the Gemini reach new chart peaks in the rest of the top 5 this week. Body becomes Dreezy’s second-highest charter following her feature on Mean What I Mean last year. It’s the highest Elliot or Furtado have been since the early 2010s. Sage the Gemini despite being quite a new act has precedence in the top 5, featuring on Dev’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VuYhd5GU70, a former #1 on my charts.

America 2 China and Infernal’s Hurricane are the only non brand new entries to move into the top 20 this week. Dua Lipa’s former 3-week #1 falls this week to #20. Cascada’s Run and CocoRosie’s Smoke Em Out both stall this week, holding their exact positions from last week’s chart. AK and Veela remain the longest-runner, notching up an 8th week, and a 6th between 20 and 35. Be The One, and Fergie’s Life Goes On are the second-longest-runners at 6 weeks apiece. Life Goes On this week falls from last week’s peak of #11 to #31, the number at which it entered initially 14 weeks ago.

On to this week’s new entries! I’ll be splitting this across two posts this week due to volume!



Chart debut for Busted with their, after a long time away, comeback track On What You’re On. It’s a funky, slightly Chic-disco inspired track with funky guitar and vocoder… not quite what anyone might’ve expected for the teen pop-punk band from the 2000s to come out with. It’s got a great groove. It’s debuting strongly this week but lingered around in my top 100 in 2016 as well, just never racking up enough plays to make it into top 40.



Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s another returning act from the distant past. She’s had mixed success on my charts since her career peak in the early 2000s with Groovejet and Murder on the Dancefloor. 2011 track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFiB651qbEM with Armin van Buuren was a huge surprise #1 for me with its great summery beach party/pool party sound. Bextor’s now on album #6 after going back to indie music from album #5 on. Wild Forever is her second chart hit from last year’s Familia following lead Come With Us, a Franz Ferdinand-lite inspired pop track that Rachel Stevens could have released in ’05 or so. This one, Wild Forever’s a little more Marina. Gotta love her glam in the video too.



Surprised at how popular this one is with commenters! I seem to’ve stumbled on something that actually will be a minor hit, instead of just tracks that I wish could be. It’s a Spotify discovery for me, but good to hear some folk have heard it out – I’ve not had a chance to hit the town in a while! Trinix are apparently a French house duo signed to Ultra Music with an association to the Chainsmokers. The more you know! Hannah Young, the vocalist, is just starting out her career too. It’s both artists’ chart debut for me. It’s got a pretty similar sound to Yall’s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hmd7of42DM which was a recent charter for me, as well as Frenship’s Capsize. Downtempo, with melodic vibes.



The return of Milky Chance, with a song I prefer to pretty much anything else they’ve already put out from album campaign #1. I guess I felt they were oversaturated at the time. This is a good indie pop track, a little like The 1975. I’m getting to the point with music that I’m looking forward to indie making a bit of a comeback and some more bands getting prominence instead of the one or two chosen ‘token’ indie bands that get mainstream support per year at the minute (e.g. Bastille, Two Door, Royal Blood, Alt-J).



Swedish producer Adrian Lux charts his first track in a while. I’ve been struggling to find who the vocalist is on this, but I might hazard it being Lux’s girlfriend Rebecca of DJ-producer duo Rebecca and Fiona. Lux and Rebecca and Fiona have all charted some tracks in the past and saw their personal chart peak in 2011-12, where Lux charted Teenage Crime, R&F charted Bullets, If She Was Away, and Turn It Down w/Kaskade, and they both charted on collab Boy. All Aloud holds on to some of Lux’s signature production sound but updates it a bit with some more modern elements. A good EDM track.



A new one for Rihanna, remixed from the track on the deluxe edition of 2016’s Anti. Anti disappointingly didn’t manage much at the Grammys this year, despite being something of a career rejuvenation from the Barbadian that’s seen her find critical success outside of the pop circles she usually keeps within. This is a really good remix, adding a smooth, downtempo chillstep, almost Stadium Arcadium undertone to the Drake/Tinashe-lite R&B styled original track. That was a minor hit in the US, but not so much to my taste – the remix’s a great improvement imo.



More indie! Cold War Kids in possibly their chart debut – or at least their first visit to the top 40 in a long time. Love is Mystical has a bit of a sound of Kings of Leon to it, of course with frontman Nathan Willett’s harsher vocal. It’s their first release in 3 years and precedes upcoming album LA Divine, due to be released in the early summer this year.



This is glorious, and returns Dua Lipa to the top 10 just as Be The One drops out. It’s actually not a new entry though, it sneaked in last week in its debut week of release at #36 after a strong initial impact.... which I missed when writing the copy for post '1. Any excuse to share it though.

Katy Perry returns with a track that reminds me a lot of…something else that I can't quite place. The underlying structure’s a lot like a slowed down mama-say-mama-sa from Rihanna’s Don’t Stop The Music, and the MJ song it was originally sampled from… but I’m not sure that’s quite it. Anyway, it’s an interesting comeback track for Perry. She’s gone blonde, which I don’t think suits her one bit, and the less said about her restyling fashion-wise, the better. I applaud her for doing something a bit different though with the disco elements. Shockingly, it’s her first UK top 10 since Dark Horse 4 years ago. This will rise on my charts next week.



Phoebe Ryan’s chart return following hard pushes to raise her profile last year, managing to grab features on the Chainsmokers’ and The Knocks’ albums. She’s ditched the green hair for a more tradional, wholesome look for 2017. Dark Side’s the first cut from her forthcoming album to be released later this year, and the first track of hers I’ve really liked since Mine in 2015. This girl can really do pop when she puts her heart and soul into it. One to watch.



Tinashe, following the steps of ten-years-ago Rihanna seems to be doing as many features as possible nowadays, while her album remains on hiatus. This is another one of her current singles, alongside Text From Your Ex with Tinie Tempah, and Slumber Party…if that’s still getting promoted… with Britney Spears. The R&B-pop princess pairs up with Lost Kings here, who I always confuse with Lost Frequencies. Lost Kings are just starting out, and have previously worked with rising star features Katelyn Tarver and Emily Warren. I think Tinashe is a step up in terms of star power, although I can’t help thinking about The Nekci Menij Show’s recent shade of her every time I’ve seen her since. This is a decent jam anyhow.



Yall’s second chart hit for me following Hundred Miles, that I came across a little late given its 2015 release. This is a new one, released just a few months ago, and appears to be a direct follow-up. The group’s Spanish, and have a shockingly low amount of followers on SoundCloud considering the huge European success of Hundred Miles, a track which has pushing 40 mil youtube views. It’s possible they’re more a live act than one that actually releases on a frequent basis. This is a solid sequel that’s essentially more of the same with slightly different lyrics and instrumentation… which is all you need, sometimes.



The first Lucy Spraggan track I’ve genuinely liked. The ex-X-Factor singer has become better known as a moderate lesbian icon, and that’s mainly how I know of her, from lesbian friends. I’ve listened to a few of her songs off and on, liking that she was an original singer pre-XF, and her quirky sense of humour, but I don’t really listen to comedic music that much. This track loses the comedy but retains the quirk – win-win – and is quite catchy and pleasant.



Elbow chart their first track since I started doing these. The band is actually less successful on the singles chart than I expected, when I looked up their history – I knew they were more an album band and it had taken them a while to get success. Although I don’t listen to albums as whole pieces that much, I liked what I heard on their latest, Little Fictions, so far, and more so than any of their other albums. I’m unsure if they’ll give any tracks a radio push – Radio 2 maybe – now that they’ve already secured the #1 on the albums chart and will probably tour it, but this one would be a good shout for a minor top 40 hit if they did.



Mariah has mixed fortunes on my charts. I don’t listen to her older music at all as it reminds me of an ex who was a big stan, and also because it’s not really my thing. Her track #Beautiful though, despite the unwieldy title, was a top charter for me when it was released, and remains one of my favourite summery songs ever. I guess overall I worry about Mariah a little, she seems a bit out of it half the time. This song’s not bad, but she should fire whoever styled her in the video… for a woman with as much wealth and power as Ms. Carey has, she does still make some frankly bizarre decisions.



Chart debut for The Him and second appearance for LissA, and first this year, fresh off squeaking into my top 100 of the year with her song Zimt. The Him are an Amsterdam production duo who according to their SoundCloud are ‘backed by industry heavyweights’. Okay then. They’re quite prolific remixers and have dipped their toes into releasing original content too off and on. LissA’s a prolific German feature artist with many fewer followers than The Him, but building her profile in a lot of different directions, especially in the chillstep and house scenes. She’s got a couple singles out right now. See more from The Him here and LissA right here.



Fittingly, we close with Goodbye, the second track of that name in this week's chart. It's another minor hit for two minor artists on my charts from the past. Filous and Mat Kearney have both charted before in collabs with James Hersey and Ingrid Michaelson respectively. A little research lets me discover that Kearney is well-known on the Christian music scene in the US which…to be honest I have mixed feelings about. He’s a pretty experienced artist, pushing 40 and on album #4 of his own, which makes him maybe a surprising choice of collab for a new act like the 19-year-old Filous. The young producer’s Austrian, and this track is his first bid for success in 2017. The collab with Hersey, How Hard I Try, saw some European success in 2015, but it’s been a cold front since then despite four follow-up releases. He’s also known for a Selena Gomez remix that adds a chilly edge to the chirpy Same Old Love.
