Just catching up now! Love that Billie has multiple appearances, 'everything i wanted' is one of her best ever for me now and 'my future' is soooo underrated. Yep, even for a top 10 hit kink.gif plenty of other good songs here as well *.* I agree with your sentiment on the 'Take Yourself Home' instrumental breakdown - what a ride that song is! The likes of Dua, Harry and Taylor have of course been killing it <3 looking forward to more!

Past Life deserved SO much more - I like Falling but if he was only gonna have one big hit, it should've been Past Life sad.gif I like the solo version but it works superbly with Selena wub.gif

Another Yummy fan! cheeseblock.png

Thanks Pete, Jade and Joseph! Yay as always for the mutual faves *.*

30. Overcoats "Fire & Fury"

Some of you will recognize this from BJSC! I first discovered Overcoats from their song ‘The Fool’ in December 2019 and kept that in my potentials list for several months. In the meantime, ‘Fire & Fury’ was released and was an instant fave, so I had to share it first! The timing was great, in the spring of the first lockdown which gave the lyric "sky is falling but we’ll get through it" an obvious relevance. I’ve always loved duos for some reason, and in this case the song’s uplifting nature and Overcoats’ lovely harmonies made it an easy 2020 highlight for me wub.gif

29. Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes & Elevation Worship "The Blessing"

Another pandemic-influenced entry on the countdown. March was a challenging month obviously, and I struggled with the rapid change of life as we knew it, coupled with the uncertainty of what the future would hold. I was doing my usual mod work on Friday and noticed this song at #1 on US iTunes. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a worship song at #1 before so I felt compelled to listen and find out what the hype was about. ‘The Blessing’ was written before the pandemic, as evidenced by the video above when massive crowds were still a thing…but I can’t even describe the sense of calm and courage that I felt by the end of the song. It was absolutely the song I needed to hear at that moment and I’m so thankful for coming across it. The only reason it’s not higher is that I haven’t listened to it as much as the other songs here; the version I listen to is 12 minutes long so that hinders its replay value a bit!

28. Jason Aldean "Got What I Got"

For those who don’t know Jason Aldean, he was named country music’s Artist of the Decade by the Academy of Country Music, and personally I think he deserves it for having the most consistently good music throughout the 2010s – and that means a lot coming from a Dierks Bentley fan! So far he’s continued that quality into the 2020s with ‘Got What I Got’, a simple, laid-back, heartfelt love song that somehow isn’t a total cliché. Perfect for a summer sunset even if you’re single AF like me kink.gif heart.gif

27. Roddy Ricch "The Box"
It might pale in comparison to what ‘Drivers License’ just did a month ago, but ‘The Box’ sort of paved the way with its nearly-overnight success out of nowhere the previous January. It was unique and melodic enough to hold my attention, and before long it was my song of choice to sing along to in the car. music.gif

26. 24kgoldn feat. Iann Dior "Mood"
I’m always fascinated by short songs and am pleased that songs have continued to trend shorter in 2020 to fuel my fascination. ‘Mood’ was a prime example, fitting three choruses and two verses in just 2:20. And it actually sounds complete, whereas some end abruptly or lack a good final chorus. So many other positives to note: its insane amount of hooks, and being one of the few recent hits with any rock elements whatsoever. This article explains the rest better than I could, including its bending and blurring of genres and its ~organic~ hit status even with the help of TikTok.

25. Internet Money feat. Don Toliver, Gunna & Nav "Lemonade"
A year ago I wouldn’t have predicted any of these four to make my EOY, let alone all four of them! It almost felt like an accident for ‘Lemonade’ to have grabbed my attention. It was the chorus in particular, which I *think* is Don Toliver – his vocals remind me of Post Malone. In many ways this feels like the strangest, most unconventional UK #1 in years, especially when it wasn’t even a top-5 hit in the US. That’s no complaint by the way, I’m always here for strange and unconventional #1s and that was a wonderful one to witness!

24. Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby "Levitating"

‘Levitating’ wins the prize for the biggest 180 I’ve had on a song all year. My introduction to the song was the Blessed Madonna remix when that was played on the chart show, which was a disappointment to say the least. kink.gif But even when DaBaby’s version was first released, I thought the tempo was too slow and just couldn’t get into it for a few weeks. It took a listen through headphones to really notice the production quirks that make it shine, and by the end of the year it was #1 on my chart! To my ears this is the female equivalent of ‘24K Magic’ and that’s meant as high praise tongue.gif
Previous EOY history for Dua: "Be The One" (#3, 2017), "New Rules" (#4, 2017), "Electricity" (#30, 2018), "One Kiss" (#45, 2018), "Swan Song" (#23, 2019), "Don’t Start Now" (#31, 2019)

23. Powfu feat. Beabadoobee "Death Bed"
It feels weird to admit that I listened to a song as sad as this one on repeat, even though millions of others must have done the same blush.gif. I think the appeal of ‘Death Bed’ was Powfu’s rather heartbreaking verses juxtaposed with Beabadoobee’s soothing chorus. I could almost compare it to ‘Stan’ in that sense. Shamefully, I haven’t actually listened to anything else from Powfu aside from his one feature in BJSC.

22. Ariana Grande "Positions"
Ariana continues to be the most successful artist on my chart, with six #1s and ‘Positions’ being her 11th top-3. Oddly enough, it’s only her second lead single to be among those eleven, the other being ‘Problem’ way back in 2014! ‘Positions’ was surprisingly divisive on Buzzjack, and my guess is that many people love ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ and ‘Thank U, Next’ and were naturally expecting another pop moment from her. Personally I found more than enough to love about this song. The highlights for me are her vocals (of course), the instrumentation (listen to it after Internet Money’s ‘Lemonade’ and notice the similarities ohmy.gif) and the video!
Previous EOY history: "Break Free" (#8, 2014), "One Last Time" (#4, 2015), "Focus" (#30, 2015), "Into You" (#1, 2016), "Side To Side" (#18, 2016), "Everyday" (#22, 2017), "God Is A Woman" (#9, 2018), "Breathin" (#33, 2018), "Don’t Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored" (#39, 2019)

21. DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch "Rockstar"
Nice to see a hip-hop song that was actually relatively well-liked on Buzzjack! ‘Rockstar’ has the benefit of being more melodic than most. DaBaby also has the gift of a quick tongue and I enjoyed his speed-rapping on this. I bought every version of the song and spam-streamed it in a failed attempt to block 6ix9ine from #1 on the Hot 100. sad.gif Also, I find it odd that DaBaby’s singles since then have made little to no impact. ‘Rockstar’ doesn’t strike me as a one-hit-wonder kind of song, nor does it deserve to be!

The Blessing was such a brilliant song to get us through lockdown, it was great to hear all the various versions of it that popped up over those first few months. Fire and Fury was a great BJSC entry as well, and death bed is another of the chart highlights from last year!

20. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande "Rain On Me"

‘Rain On Me’ wasn’t as instant for me as it was for others, but there’s no denying it was stuck in my head that whole month of June. The drop made me think I was listening to Jamiroquai, which is a style I never thought I’d hear from any major artist, let alone these two. It gave Lady Gaga her long-awaited first #1 on my chart and Ariana her seventh, extending her own record. As for the video, how lucky were they to have filmed it 3 or 4 months before release! Could you imagine if the shoot had to be cancelled?
Previous EOY history for Lady Gaga: "The Cure" (#34, 2017), "Shallow" (#51, 2018)
Previous EOY history for Ariana: "Break Free" (#8, 2014), "One Last Time" (#4, 2015), "Focus" (#30, 2015), "Into You" (#1, 2016), "Side To Side" (#18, 2016), "Everyday" (#22, 2017), "God Is A Woman" (#9, 2018), "Breathin" (#33, 2018), "Don’t Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored" (#39, 2019)

19. Taylor Swift "The Man"
‘The Man’ was an instant Lover highlight for me and I’m glad it was chosen as a single, even if it was late in the era and didn’t amount to much. The chorus is among Taylor’s best lyrics and that alone is saying a lot. Honestly I’m in awe of how she fit these strong statements into a perfectly serviceable radio-friendly song!
Previous EOY history: "Shake It Off" (#22, 2014), "Wildest Dreams" (#25, 2015), "Delicate" (#1, 2018), "…Ready For It?" (#49, 2018), "You Need To Calm Down" (#32, 2019)

18. Lil Mosey "Blueberry Faygo"

Probably the most surprising #1 on my chart last year, and six months later I still don’t regret it. cool2.gif I was already quite fond of Lil Mosey’s song ‘Noticed’ and ‘Blueberry Faygo’ proved to be even more of an earworm. He must have some great producers! It sounds like something I’d normally consider disposable, so I’ll be interested to revisit it in a few years’ time. Also, for the zero people who were curious, I have never tasted Faygo.

17. Doja Cat "Say So"
In just this past year since her proper breakthrough, Doja Cat has shown an impressive versatility as an artist, which I love to see and hope will bode well for her long-term! ‘Say So’ is a perfect example, as she sings and raps so effortlessly and borrows influence from multiple music eras. Disco is the most obvious, but it also sounds like something Janet or Ashanti could’ve released in the early 2000s. Even though TikTok helped it take off, it felt like an organic hit in a year where those were very few and far-between. Just wish it could be enjoyed without the guilt of knowing Dr. Luke was involved! drama.gif

16. 5 Seconds Of Summer "Old Me"

‘Old Me’ is subtle, nostalgic, reflective and ultimately a healthy take on personal growth and self-acceptance. We love to see it! I love the maturity not just in the lyrics but in the sound, a nice evolution that feels true to them and not just reaching for a cheap hit.
Previous EOY history: "She Looks So Perfect" (#41, 2014)

15. Taylor Swift feat. Bon Iver "Exile"
What an unexpectedly outstanding collab! The fact that Taylor Swift and Bon Iver recorded a song together, let alone two songs, is nothing short of amazing. Almost hard to believe it’s the same artist who gave us "Spelling is fun!" the year before. kink.gif I still need to listen to ‘Evermore’ (the album and the song) but look forward to eventually hearing their second collab!
Previous EOY history for Taylor: "Shake It Off" (#22, 2014), "Wildest Dreams" (#25, 2015), "Delicate" (#1, 2018), "…Ready For It?" (#49, 2018), "You Need To Calm Down" (#32, 2019)

14. Little Mix "Sweet Melody"

The phrase “third time’s a charm” sure rang true for Little Mix last year. ‘Break Up Song’ and ‘Holiday’ seemed to lack originality and sounded too much like other songs. ‘Sweet Melody’ saved the era though by giving us something truly fresh. The drop in the second half of the chorus is everything *.* I can’t think of a song to compare it to sonically! Chart-wise it was like watching All Saints’ ‘Never Ever’ claim its #1 spot after several weeks in the top 10. Definitely a triumph of a song for them to release 9 years into their career!
Previous EOY history: "Woman Like Me" (#47, 2018)

13. Chris Brown feat. Young Thug "Go Crazy"
Yes, you read that correctly. I love this song. Even Young Thug’s verse!! Please send help.
Previous EOY history for Chris: "Loyal" (#18, 2014), "Show Me" (#26, 2014), "New Flame" (#40, 2014), "Freaky Friday" (#40, 2018)
Previous EOY history for Young Thug: "Havana" (#50, 2017), "Goodbyes" (#18, 2019)

12. Justin Bieber feat. Quavo "Intentions"
‘Intentions’ is full of lyrics that I’m sure many would consider awful but I think they’re really clever – such as "Already passed, you don’t need no approval" and "Heart full of equity, you’re an asset". It takes a lot for me to notice lyrics in the first place, so either way this song had no trouble accomplishing that. laugh.gif Quavo made for a good feature too—feels like forever since we heard from him despite his omnipresence in 2017, but his verse was genuinely the right fit for this!
Previous EOY history for Justin: "Sorry" (#12, 2016 and #14, 2015), "Let Me Love You" (#6, 2016), "Friends" (#23, 2017), "I Don’t Care" (#37, 2019)

11. Miley Cyrus "Midnight Sky"

I had an interesting first experience of ‘Midnight Sky’: heard it blaring out of someone’s car stereo while I was riding my bike, and it sounded so good I had to stop and Shazam it! Even though it deserved to be even more massive than it was, we can at least be thankful it didn’t struggle as much as ‘Mother’s Daughter’ and ‘Slide Away’. I’m sure there will be uproar that it’s not in my top 10, but I got bored of it too quickly. sad.gif
Previous EOY history: "Adore You" (#31, 2014), "Feelin' Myself" (#59, 2014), "Malibu" (#40, 2017), "Mother’s Daughter" (#2, 2019), "Don’t Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Slide Away" (#28, 2019)

Top 10 is next, but I may or may not get around to it for a couple weeks!

39. Harry Styles "Golden"
38. Taylor Swift "Cardigan"
37. BTS "Dynamite"
35. Ava Max "Kings & Queens" even though I could have seen it doing something.. I actually didn't see it coming for longevity like it did really. Here's hoping MHAH smashes too.
34. Saint Jhn "Roses (Imanbek Remix)
33. Dua Lipa "Hallucinate" this deserved to be a big top 10 hit, damn Spotify for not supporting it enough when they did all her other singles.
32. Billie Eilish "Everything I Wanted"
30. Overcoats "Fire & Fury""
26. 24kgoldn feat. Iann Dior "Mood"
25. Internet Money feat. Don Toliver, Gunna & Nav "Lemonade" didn't mind this to start with but got bored fast
24. Dua Lipa feat. DaBaby "Levitating"
23. Powfu feat. Beabadoobee "Death Bed" I voted this in the hate chart as it's a bit on the duller side for me but I did like the sample and the intentions are good!
22. Ariana Grande "Positions"
21. DaBaby feat. Roddy Ricch "Rockstar"
20. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande "Rain On Me"
19. Taylor Swift "The Man"
18. Lil Mosey "Blueberry Faygo" not crazy on this but it is one of the better songs of that ilk.
17. Doja Cat "Say So"
15. Taylor Swift feat. Bon Iver "Exile" beautiful, perhaps Taylor's best ballad for me. Moves you a lot <3
14. Little Mix "Sweet Melody" definitely their best since 'Touch' for me and I was pleased it grabbed them another #1 as well.
13. Chris Brown feat. Young Thug "Go Crazy" ok so I don't actually mind this and I still like about 5 Chris Brown tracks but yeah we don't want to endorse him either really with more hits.
12. Justin Bieber feat. Quavo "Intentions" I keep hearing this in stores more than anywhere else lol it's alright but I prefer 'Anyone' from anything he's released since 'Despacito'
11. Miley Cyrus "Midnight Sky" Shame you got bored of it pretty quick sad.gif it's easily my fave Miley track now heart.gif I love this lane she's gone down too.

Thanks Joseph and Rob! Aaaaand we're back!

10. Sam Smith "Diamonds"

Sam Smith is the reigning champ of my EOY, with ‘How Do You Sleep?’ claiming my #1 of 2019. They really seem to be at their artistic peak lately, with ‘Diamonds’ being another…shining gem basil.gif Deserved so much more chart-wise but still a great recovery from their previous two singles. Here’s to more of these uptempo bops!
Previous EOY history: "Latch" (#11, 2014), "Money On My Mind" (#38, 2014), "I’m Not The Only One" (#39, 2014), "Too Good At Goodbyes" (#31, 2017), "How Do You Sleep?" (#1, 2019)

9. Miranda Lambert "Bluebird"

So, backstory: I saw Miranda live in 2015 and it was a weird experience because she seemed very mentally and emotionally checked out…only to reveal a few days later her split with Blake Shelton. Her output since then didn’t impress me either, but ‘Bluebird’ won me back over and went all the way to my #1 in August. Written three days after Miranda’s new marriage, it offers a spring-like sense of hope that feels both authentic to this point in her life and relevant to the ongoing hard times in our world. Unique production too, love the strings!
Previous EOY history: "Automatic" (#25, 2014)

8. Luke Combs "Even Though I’m Leaving"

Luke Combs is by far the biggest name in the current generation of artists but his style is more like the generation of country that he and I both grew up on. ‘Even Though I’m Leaving’ is a father-son song with fantastic lyrics, reminding me of Rodney Atkins' ‘Watching You’ or Trace Adkins' ‘You’re Gonna Miss This’. While he’s not normally one of my faves, Luke shows wisdom beyond his years with his heartfelt storytelling in this song. Only peaked at #6 on my chart in January but stuck with me the rest of the year wub.gif

7. Dua Lipa "Physical"
Surely I don’t need to plead my case on why this song is here – it’s utter perfection! The release of ‘Physical’ was very well-timed just as the 80s trend was in full swing, and while it struggled to make the top 10 at first, we eventually watched it peak at #3 which was very satisfying! And yet it’s still probably not in my top 3 Dua faves, a testament to the consistent strength of her discography. We don’t get many eras like Future Nostalgia these days, so this one will be cherished for years to come!
Previous EOY history: "Be The One" (#3, 2017), "New Rules" (#4, 2017), "Electricity" (#30, 2018), "One Kiss" (#45, 2018), "Swan Song" (#23, 2019), "Don’t Start Now" (#31, 2019)

6. Lady Gaga "Stupid Love"
Has anyone else ranked ‘Stupid Love’ higher than ‘Rain On Me’, I wonder? unsure.gif For me it’s as simple as ‘Rain On Me’ being an instant smash with a quick but short-lived impact, whereas ‘Stupid Love’ took several weeks to grow on me, putting it higher in my affections. I can’t compare it to any specific song but it still felt like re-living previous Gaga eras back when she dominated and could do no wrong. So while EOY season is pretty much over, I hope this is not being overshadowed and instead getting its share of recognition and (stupid) love!

5. Trevor Daniel "Falling"
I tend to prefer conventional song structures and melodies, so ‘Falling’ was a little too odd for me on my first several listens. However, it was a majorly slow burner here and didn’t peak on airplay until summer, and somewhere along the way it finally clicked. I grew to like how unformulaic it is and that it doesn’t easily fit into any particular genre. I’m curious as to what made it so popular on TikTok though, it’s so moody and slow! So, I’ve only heard two Trevor Daniel songs and both of them made my EOY…clearly I need to listen to more, and hopefully he’ll have new music this year too.

4. The Weeknd "Blinding Lights"

(*insert joke about how niche and unknown this song is*) ‘Blinding Lights’ speaks for itself at this point, a massive consensus hit, a trend-setter, and a definite, deserved, future classic, no matter what the Grammy voters think. Given its omnipresence for over a year now, I’ll probably never listen to it out of choice ever again, but somehow it hasn’t burned out or lost its beauty after listening to it as many times as we all have. What a song to cement your status in pop history! I can’t say it’s my favorite on After Hours though thinking.gif
Previous EOY history: "I Feel It Coming" (#2, 2017 and #29, 2016), "Pray For Me" (#14, 2018), "Power Is Power" (#40, 2019)

3. Becky Hill feat. Shift K3y "Better Off Without You"

2020 was a successful year for Becky, finally scoring not just her first but also her second hit as lead artist! I’m especially pleased to see it off the back of ‘Wish You Well’, which was just briefly my favorite song of Becky’s until ‘Better Off Without You’ was released. Admittedly it’s a bit of a ‘Wish You Well’ part two but that’s no bad thing, and somehow the chorus is even bigger and more outstanding. Great assist from Shift K3y on the production as well. In a year that was full of dance covers, this original stood out even more and did not go unnoticed.
Previous EOY history for Becky: "Wish You Well" (#6, 2019)

Only two songs left...I'm guessing you'll be surprised!

2. Doja Cat "Boss Bitch"

I’m neither a bitch nor a boss, nor do I shine like gloss, but I think I have the authority to say ‘Boss Bitch’ is absolute perfection. Who’d have thought the artist behind ‘Juicy’ and ‘Say So’ (and ‘Mooo’ kink.gif) could give us such an aggressive EDM/pop banger!? Big kudos to the production which blows my mind every time I hear it. Of course I’m also in awe of how they fit so much song into just 2:14 – although I wouldn’t mind if it were a minute or two longer! The US did not give ‘Boss Bitch’ the respect it deserves, as it peaked at #100 on the Hot 100. Thank goodness the UK came through, 13 weeks on the chart show and Scott actually played it most of those weeks. Reminds me of the chart run for Wynter Gordon’s ‘Dirty Talk’ from 2011 (another BANGER I must add *.*)! Long story short, Doja Cat has quickly proven her versatility as an artist and I hope she continues to surprise us!

1. The Weeknd "Heartless"

This feels weird, but I can finally confirm ‘Heartless’ was my #1 song of last year ohmy.gif As great as ‘Blinding Lights’ was, I always preferred this one and was thrilled to see it add to The Weeknd’s #1 tally here on Billboard, and become such a long-running hit which didn’t seem to happen anywhere else. The Weeknd came so, so close to #1 on my EOY three years ago with ‘I Feel It Coming’, so I’m happy he has redeemed himself. That said, I wouldn’t quite call ‘Heartless’ my favorite song of his; it just had luck on its side, being my #1 in January and didn’t get overtaken the rest of the year. It also benefits from the video; I’m a sucker for those Vegas lights even if I’ve yet to experience them in person!
Previous EOY history: "I Feel It Coming" (#2, 2017 and #29, 2016), "Pray For Me" (#14, 2018), "Power Is Power" (#40, 2019)

Overall I’d call 2020 a surprisingly strong year for music, especially considering the pandemic! While I didn’t have clear runaway faves like I’ve had in past years, this top 65 is incredibly strong and each song played a part in getting me through this crazy year. Hopefully I’ll be back for 2021 EOY season – either way, thank you for reading and commenting! biggrin.gif *pats self on back for finishing my EOY 10 days earlier than I did last year*

Boss Bitch!! wub.gif I prefer Say So but I'm SO glad Boss Bitch got its moment in the limelight too!

Falling really grew on me after Past Life came out and I listened to his album, I do hope by some miracle he can avoid being a one hit wonder but Past Life not being given much of a chance doesn't look optimistic.

Stupid Love and Physical wub.gif and Diamonds is one of Sam's best! Great stuff biggrin.gif
