Another film that was getting rave reviews earlier in the year, especially Mary J. Blige who a lot of people mentioned as the cast highlight. It ended up being acquired by Netflix so its awards chances are probably a bit ruined by that (oops ) although it does look very poignant. I think it looks brilliant and I really like Carey Mulligan too so I'll make sure I watch this when it's released. |

Would definitely recommend this based on the final act alone! The first two thirds or so are actually pretty dull and slow but certainly worthwhile sitting through as it makes the pay-off at the end so much more impactful. I know Mary J. Blige is getting the majority of the acting praise and props to her because she gives an incredibly warm and moving performance but my highlights were the scenes between Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell. Some really touching moments between the two but it's so sad to see because you know a friendship between those two just wasn't able to survive in those times and the ending had me wincing because it felt so real.
