A new thread ahead of tonight's episode after the last thread reached 50 pages.

A reminder of what to expect this Summer:

Schedule
Monday - 8pm
Tuesday - 7:30pm
Thursday - 7:30pm
Friday - 8pm

Omg Whitney ‘when you know, you know’ yeah hun isn’t this your 3rd engagement in 4 years?

Sonia, I do NOT need to know that you’re like a leaky tap when you get going.

Stacey and Martin are pretty horrific as people.

Not sure on Bobby yet. But I liked Ben acting like an uncle.

Sharon, keep slaying.

Posted by: pippa Jun 18 2019, 04:00 PM

I am not seeing much direction as to how Stacey will be wrote out for her maternity leave unless she goes on the run with Arthur.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jun 19 2019, 07:56 PM

There's no way Sharon is just going to reveal all to Phil surely

Posted by: T Boy Jun 20 2019, 09:55 PM

Screaming at Sharon and Karen teaming up.

How on Earth does Kathy look so f**king young?

Am I the only one who doesn’t understand what is so bad about Kush getting legal rights to his son?

Posted by: Slick Jun 20 2019, 10:09 PM

That episode was trash and made literally no sense. Sharon going all gangsta, kidnapping Keanu and smacking Karen unconscious with no logic or reason.

Posted by: Jαsє Jun 21 2019, 08:12 PM

omg this scene just came to mind rotf.gif Cringiest soap moment EVER.

Posted by: T Boy Jun 22 2019, 06:28 AM

Tbf it wasn’t actually Bobby’s fault Max did time. Phil bribes the jury but has been completely left out of any of Max’s revenge for some reason.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Jun 22 2019, 10:45 AM

Exactly Bobby had no part but I suppose it gives Bobby the storyline of paying for what happened and will likely lead to a max and ian plot aswell which could lead to Lauren returning.

Posted by: T Boy Jun 22 2019, 01:43 PM

Does anyone want Lauren returning though? They killed the wrong sister.

Posted by: Medellíam Jun 22 2019, 01:52 PM

I have no interest in Max seeking vengeance against Bobby. In fact, I have no interest in Max.

I am interested in seeing Bobby coping with being back in Walford, trying to readjust to real life but being constantly reminded of his past. There's lots to explore there, much more than the half-arsed "is Bobby evil?" angel that DTC tried to push.

Posted by: T Boy Jun 22 2019, 02:05 PM

I agree, I think Bobby’s return has been handled well so far and much more realistic than it could have been. He’s messed up after making a mistake and his parents’ behaviour following messed him up a bit more. He’s not a monster. Leave that role for someone like Denny.

I too am uninterested in Max. He’s run his course.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 23 2019, 05:39 PM

No Eastenders on Thursday this week, due to England playing Norway.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jun 24 2019, 10:23 PM

I can’t be the only one that thinks Bobby injured himself here?

Posted by: Medellíam Jun 24 2019, 10:37 PM

Yeah I thought that too. I feel like that final "please" after seemingly telling Ian and Kathy to leave him alone was more to himself.

Loved the scene with Denise coming over to the Beales in the Vic. Nice continuity.

Karen being oblivious to who Bobby is despite living on the square for two years and only living a few streets away when Lucy's murder made national news...

Thursday and Fridays episodes have both been rescheduled to accommodate the Women's World Cup QF stages on BBC One.

Thursday's episode will air tonight at 9pm and Friday's episode on Thursday at 7pm (up against Emmerdale!) It's almost like the BBC want the show to be axed :')

I don't know what makes you think that, when there is major Football competitions during the summer, Eastenders always gets shuffled around, its been ongoing for years.

Why is Lola frowned upon for being angry that bratty Lexi is acting like a brat?

ffs

Posted by: T Boy Jun 27 2019, 09:38 PM

Ffs that’s all we need. We’ve already seen that character completely ignore his son’s mental health and he already throws his toys out the pram over every tiny inconvenience.

I think this is the wrong character to explore this with.

Posted by: Medellíam Jun 27 2019, 09:42 PM

If they used this as a way to address Mick's attitude toward Lee and his depression then I'm here for it, but I very much doubt that'll be the case as I think the show expected us to cheer Mick on at the time.

This is pretty unnecessary. The Carters have Ollie's autism storyline and that's impactful enough. We don't need another "woe is Mick" story.

Posted by: HarryEzra Jun 28 2019, 03:32 AM

This is totally the wrong character to do this with...I can think of many characters who would do way better and explore correctly after his treatment of Lee I don't think it should be him :/

Posted by: Liаm Jun 28 2019, 10:50 AM

Exactly - it's not as if the character or family need a storyline! It's ALWAYS all about them, we had a nice escape while Mick was in prison, do they feel the need to make up for it?? Unless it's something quite drastic and different like schizophrenia, I'd probably be here for that but they wouldn't commit to altering a character like Mick so drastically.

Exit confirmed for Mel.

Gutted they wasted such a talent. sad.gif I don't actually understand why she was brought back in the first place though. At least we'll get some scenes with Lisa before she goes.

Posted by: Jαsє Jul 11 2019, 12:45 PM

She didn't last long laugh.gif I'm not surprised she's going. Her storylines have been awful.

Posted by: T Boy Jul 11 2019, 04:11 PM

That is such a shame as she has been absolutely amazing of late.

They completely wasted her in the first year back and she often felt like she was part of a different show. I’ve pretty much been dreading this since New Year.

With an actress of her calibre, she was never going to hang around for ages.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jul 11 2019, 05:14 PM

Loool unsurprising really. I’ve enjoyed her being back but there’s nothing more for her with Hunter gone and we can’t keep going over old storylines. Right decision.

Posted by: Medellíam Jul 11 2019, 05:38 PM

It's annoying that it's slightly tainted the character as newer viewers are just going to remember her as an isolated character who was always miserable and no explanation or exploration as to why that was. If this was a new character played by a less capable actress, I'd probably feel nothing for the character either.

Posted by: pippa Jul 11 2019, 05:51 PM

The exit was to be expected as we have speculated for a while.

An unexpected turn for Bobby there. I do wonder what their approach is going to be with this and I hope they’re not going down a radicalisation route.

Sounds like it's going to be a positive story:

QUOTE
EastEnders have been working with the Muslim Youth Helpline on this storyline, which helps Bobby find peace with his past actions through his new-found Muslim faith.

In the coming weeks viewers will see Bobby explore his new faith and how it positively affects him; offering Bobby support and helping him find peace with past events. As Bobby continues to settle into life back in Walford, albeit facing many challenges from his past, Bobby finds much support and encouragement from many close by.

Zohra Khaku Director of the Muslim Youth Helpline said: “The Muslim Youth Helpline have been providing feedback on Bobby’s storyline with the BBC EastEnders team. In a time where young British Muslims see their faith overwhelmingly represented in a negative way, it is heartening to see Islam portrayed as a positive influence in Bobby’s life."

Jon Sen added: “We are thrilled to be working with the Muslim Youth Helpline on a storyline which serves to challenge preconceptions and prejudices about the role of faith in young peoples’ lives. Bobby Beale's story will show how a young boy uses religion to help find peace and give his life meaning, structure and purpose. We hope this storyline will demonstrate the positive impact of religion in modern society.”

I thought it was going to be Honey on the subject of domestic abuse, it seems to be handled well. This is the second time this subject has been covered as I remember little Mo Slater bashing Trevor with an iron

Posted by: King Rollo Jul 12 2019, 09:52 PM

Yes,it will be interesting to see what happens with Gray and Chantelle. I wouldn't have even been able to put a name to Chantelle's husband up to this point.

Best UK Soap again at the moment.

Been ages since EE was this good!

Posted by: T Boy Jul 13 2019, 06:31 AM

It’s been obvious for some time that this was what they were going to do with Gray and Chantelle. The fact that she was hesitant to take the job and the fact that until last night, we’ve never seen them in a scene on their own or in their house.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Jul 13 2019, 08:57 AM

I expected Adam and honey for such a storyline but im.hapoy with it going to them also.

Posted by: T Boy Jul 13 2019, 09:47 AM

Honey and Adam won’t be domestic abuse, he’s just a slime ball cheat.

Posted by: Slick Jul 13 2019, 09:59 AM

I've been waiting for something to "surprise" us about Chantelle and Gray's relationship for weeks. He's such a lovely gorgeous guy and they're a perfect couple, but the signs have been there for ages - it's been done so well and the reveal of the abuse was a hard scene to watch.

Posted by: Liаm Jul 13 2019, 12:49 PM

This has all the makings of a brilliant storyline, it's great as well to use new characters so quickly with such a big storyline. Kate Oates is really moving the soap on, I agree it's probably the best atm.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jul 13 2019, 01:21 PM

3.3m for last night’s episode is not great though. It’s improving massively as a show but the audience needs to be tempted back in too

Posted by: Medellíam Jul 15 2019, 12:45 AM

Just caught up on the Thursday and Friday episodes. There was lots of speculation that there would be domestic abuse storyline for Gray and Chantelle so I wasn't surprised to see it confirmed in an article after the episode aired, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite so brutal and raw. I welled up as Chantelle sunk to the floor in tears and the way the scene lasted just longer than a moment really added to the discomfort of it. The build up as they were walking to the house and Chantelle was trying to talk her way out of what she knew was coming was really suspenseful and I also thought it was good that we actually saw the aftermath: once upon a time, the beating would have been the duff duff; a quick shock with no immediate follow up. If the show wants to raise awareness on domestic abuse, we need to see it all.

Jessica Plummer's soft delivery of her lines makes sense now in this context. I just wish I could believe Chantelle as a part of the Taylor family because that would make the storyline stronger. As it stands, I don't see any chemistry with any of her family members and that may get in the way of other aspects of this storyline.

Also, I forgot to mention last week, but the Pride episode was potentially my favourite of the year. heart.gif

Also again - Honey in that dress! *.*

Posted by: pippa Jul 15 2019, 02:50 PM

Chantelle needs further integration with the Tylers in general to really bring more power to the storyline.

Congrats to Lacey Turner and her partner Matt on the arrival of their daughter on Friday! wub.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jul 15 2019, 04:28 PM

Congratulations to Lacey yahoo.gif

She come across so lovely on This Morning when she discussed her long journey in terms of successfully becoming pregnant.

Also I agree that I was pleased we seen the aftermath of Chantelle’s attack. Initially I was thinking the scene where she punched her and she sank in tears to the floor was going to be the duff duff. It worked better with that not being the case.

Posted by: pippa Jul 15 2019, 05:58 PM

Warm congrats to Lacey and her husband.

Not been confirmed if it's permanent yet or whether it's just time off, possibly maternity leave. I hope it's just temporary as when the character is written well, she's fantastic! Also if this did turn out to be permanent, the character deserves a better exit than that (the Vincent storyline is right there ffs!). I'd also really miss Pearl who is a star in her own right.

There's speculation that Tameka is pregnant again. When she left in 2013, it was ages until it was revealed she was on maternity leave, apparently she had complications so it was kept on the down low. It's possible that's why we've had no confirmation this time around either.

That was shortly after Sharon returned although fans don't remember it quite as it happened. Sharon did introduce herself but followed it up with "you might not remember be" or something along those lines. 2012 Eastenders was uploaded in its entirety on Dailymotion which was where I could check it but it's since been removed by the BBC, however it definitely wasn't as much of an error as Sharon forgetting they had previously met.

It's kinda up there with fans claiming Sonia said "get Den Watts, he'll know what to do!" in the 2004 fairground disaster (also did not happen, not in that episode at least). laugh.gif

I hate when the show makes out characters don't know who famous people are. Lola may be in her mid-20s but would she really never have heard of Julie Garland, Donna Summer and Dusty Springfield?

Posted by: pippa Jul 19 2019, 01:32 PM

Posted by: Medellíam Jul 19 2019, 01:37 PM

I mean I know who they are but I think it’s sort of very slightly possible some who’s my age and straight might not.

The same way a character like Dot wouldn’t know who Ariana Grande or someone like that was.

It’s amazing what a change in producers can do.

Stuart was a joke last year. A failed attempt at making Mick look like the show’s protagonist. They introduced and interesting thread that he was sexually abused as a child and then mostly ignored it and sent out the message that sexual abuse turns you into a complete nutter.

Putting him with other characters was such a good idea. He seems like a more rounded but still flawed character and it helps that Ricky Champ and Tanya Franks are two of the best actors in the show.

Posted by: Medellíam Jul 30 2019, 10:45 PM

Yeah, I would never have believed it last year that Stuart could be saved as a character. I like that the show hasn't expected us to pretend last year never happened and have Stuart 'redeemed'. He's still very flawed and is capable of doing awful things, but he is much more rounded and nuanced. I love his relationship with Rainie.

I think we all knew that Stacey would be the one to injure Phil but I do like how it built and it's a logical way to accommodate Lacey's maternity and presumably Steve's latest break from the show. It also helps to put the Sheanu storyline on hold (or perhaps develop it further whilst he's away?).

-x-

I notice it's 15 years to the day since this classic scene:

This was a couple of months before I started watching EastEnders but I remember watching these clips via the website not that long after. Remains one of my favourite catfights! 2004 was heavily criticised at the time but there was still plenty of iconic moments.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Jul 31 2019, 02:40 AM

Chrissie had a few great scenes, I really like her.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jul 31 2019, 10:56 AM

They’ve been spotted literally round the corner from me at our Nene Valley railway line. They renamed the station Walford Common briefly for some scenes that are going to be aired in September. Bobby was the only character spotted.

Chrissie remains an iconic soap bitch!! The haircut scene was so good *.*

Agreed! One of my favourites but I fear they'd go down the "Chrissie is evil" route when that's never what she was. A bit like when Emmerdale brought back Kim Tate and had as a panto villain (although it seems they've found the balance now).

It really has turned a corner. Only Mick really irritates me now and he’s only been in it a little recently.

Posted by: Medellíam Jul 31 2019, 10:33 PM

It's been on a roll since February I think. Even poorer moments are drowned out by the generally strong place that the show is in right now.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Aug 1 2019, 02:17 AM

It has turned the corner alot and I think in another 2-3 months it will have that real oomph that was missing. The chantelle storyline I think could be great as she is playing it brilliantly so far you can feel her fear when watching.

Posted by: pippa Aug 1 2019, 12:38 PM

I am enjoying how many characters are getting screen time now and the focus is not not on one family.
There was a long period where the show was totally dominated by the Carters.

Omg I know, she literally looks like Bernadette on holiday! I guess you could say that she at least doesn’t look like she’s trying to play someone way younger.

How old is Bernadette anyway?

Posted by: linds Aug 1 2019, 02:10 PM

I'm kind of out of touch with eastenders lately (it can be hard to keep up when you work until 9pm most day) but i do still see the odd episode if I'm at my parents and my mum has it on and i still follow it on social media so i see some clips which is handy so still have a rough idea of what's going on but I'm hearing a lot of good things about it these days that I'm actially considering doing a bit of a binge and then keeping up properly again.

I'm seeing a lot of LGBTQ content (well L/G as soaps are allergic to having a bisexual character) but that's really peaked my interest more (to absolutely nobody's surprise) and I want to see what the Callum/Ben pairing is all about as well as Iqra apparently having a lesbian reveal soon? ohmy.gif

and we can't forget our sexually liquid karen now can we :')

Jean and Shirley are such different characters and i feel that is why their friendship works.
The friendships in the square need to be developed more as they open storyline further for characters.

Coming up next week:

The police continue to investigate Phil’s attack
Mick’s mental health storyline begins
Halfway and Whitney wedding drama
Sheree (Patrick’s new love interest) arrives and clashes with Denise
Iqra finds out that Bobby is studying Islam

Posted by: T Boy Aug 2 2019, 08:46 PM

One scene and I feel like I’m already stanning Sheree.

I wondered where I’d seen the new detective before but an article on DS explained. She has a new haircut but I usually see her acting in Welsh so to watch her speak English threw me a little!

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 2 2019, 08:51 PM

So Bex, who is a teenage girl, who is somehow magically Oxford material, after failing all her exams not long ago, going out to party all the time, and generally looking like she's not studying/ not particularly smart, is now also magically the next Paula Radcliffe?! Are you having a larf Eastenders? So unrealistic. One: with A Levels, you work hard for two years, coursework, exams, and THEN do final exams, or you don't go to Oxford. It's not one exam takes all. Two: a fully grown man who goes to the gym to train cardio and running all the time v Bex, who is not fully grown, is a woman (and there's a reason why physical sports are divided by sex), who has literally BEEN SITTING EATING CHOCOLATE AND STUDYING AND DOING NOTHING ELSE FOR TWO MONTHS. She must have a magical cardiovascular system to beat him. Come on, EE - be realistic!

Also, Sharon suddenly knocking out Karen, drug lords, etc? SHARON? SHARON?! And then threatening everyone and challenging everyone to fights? Come ON. You don't wake up and turn into a gangsta. She would be k.oed by Karen, not the other way round.

Too unbelievable for me atm. Axe Sharon!

Posted by: T Boy Aug 2 2019, 09:05 PM

Sharon cannot be axed ever.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 2 2019, 09:25 PM

Just a few months ago, she was terrified of a gangsta woman, too, and was worried she was too weak and just Phil's wife. She can't go from that to the square's champion fighter gangsta woman! They'd be better off axing.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 2 2019, 09:32 PM

She punched one woman, she’s hardly gangster queen. Sharon has punched plenty of people over the years. You’ve picked a really weird thing to make out as unrealistic given everything else that’s going on with her.

Also Sharon is an EE institution. It will only be over for her when Letitia Dean decides.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 2 2019, 09:37 PM

She also punched out a hard as nails drug lord?! Also, the storyline at the moment with keanu is so unrealistic, but it is soap gold tbh.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 2 2019, 09:39 PM

Exactly. She’s in a very high profile storyline that has loads of mileage going forward. There’s no way she’d be axed now even if she wasn’t Sharon.

I actually can’t think of one character that needs axing right now.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 2 2019, 09:48 PM

Mick and Linda say hi.

Although saying that, Kat and Stacey's storyline is unrealistic, extremely out of character for both, and ruining the show...

She just needs a story where she can be seen as being a bit more likeable and not just some man stealer. I’m hoping we find out more about both sisters past. Like maybe they had a very strict religious like upbringing?

They made a mistake hyping up the Ahmed sisters as if they were the new Ronnie and Roxy. I do think they both have potential and they seem more settled now rather than being aware of the camera and looking like they were acting.

I do stan Habiba's hair though.

Lorraine gets a lot of criticism for her acting and I do sometimes agree that she tends to play it a little over the top in dramatic scenes, but I still find her very believable as a protective mother desperate for her son to stay out of harms way. I usually have more of a problem with the writing for her in some of the comedy scenes than I do her acting.

Danny Walters is fine in every day scenes but he struggles in anything that requires any sort of drama or emotion. It's a shame as I thought he brought lots of humanity to the Sheanu affair last year but, since he returned earlier in the year and became joined to the hip of the Mitchell family, he's totally lost that spark. I hope it can return when the affair inevitably continues otherwise he really is going to be the weak link in the big reveal.

Posted by: pippa Aug 8 2019, 12:54 PM

Lorraine Stanley really works as an actress for me and i find her delivery of scenes believable whether its the serious or more intense scenes.
Danny Walters gets alot of hate and while not be the strongest actor he is passable.

To be fair it's unrealistic that anyone would slap anyone in soap really. People don't tend to slap one another in the middle of a heated argument and there would certainly be consequences if anyone did. It's just part of the dramatic licence soaps have.

What evidence is there that Karen is the hardest woman on the square? Isn’t it only Sharon that she’s punched? I can’t remember whether she hit Michelle’s stalker or not. But there is no reason why Sharon couldn’t knock her out with a lucky punch.

There are plenty of ‘unrealistic’ things going on with Sharon right now but that is not one of them.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 15 2019, 10:55 AM

Why does Eastenders always exaggerate the intelligence of its characters?? They're always out clubbin and fighring etx and they always get As and Bs? laugh.gif No one ever resits anythin either. Bex fsiled EVERYTHING up until final exams. The best she could get would be Cs and Bs. What an utter joke! A Levels are across 2 years!

Posted by: lewistgreen Aug 15 2019, 07:33 PM

I mean retakes are a thing so anything she did fail she probably took again but I’m not sure EE or the public care enough about the minor details of how a character achieved their A Level results rotf.gif

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Aug 15 2019, 07:35 PM

People getting results should give Eastenders a miss that week as it'd make them feel bad to see these thick characters overachiening somehow.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 15 2019, 09:14 PM

In the contrary, other than when she went missing for a couple of days, all Bex has done this year is study and jog so I think it’s pretty realistic she got those grades. She hasn’t failed much to my knowledge. From what I can remember, her music GCSE grade was disappointing but she hasn’t even been studying music so that’s irrelevant now. She’s has a few nights out here and there but what 18 year old doesn’t? I got really good A Level results and I was certainly no monk in my final year of school. And we’ve seen her studying way more than we’ve seen her partying.

Bex getting those grades isn’t as unrealistic as people are making out. It is unrealistic that Oxford would have offered her a place to begin with but those grades were definitely achievable for her. If Louise gets straight A*s next year, THAT would be unrealistic.

Mick and Linda really are jerks. That can’t be overstated.

Agreed! This is so much more interesting that the teen psycho route that we've seen all too many times. It also makes up for the shoddy work they did of the Who Killed Lucy? storyline after we had found out it was Bobby who killed her; it's brought the humanity back to the story which was what made it so strong to begin with.

Posted by: pippa Aug 19 2019, 07:00 PM

So far they have handled it well and it is slow paced which usually works much better for any storyline.

This is definitely the best UK soap right now.

Just seen all last weeks episodes as well as the two from this week.

Such strong acting in general.

There’s no real weak links in the cast at the moment.

Kate Oates is working wonders right now. Every soap she’s done so far has at the time she’s been in charge been my favourite. I love her way of producing and she really allows people to shine and gets the best out of characters who were perhaps a bit stale this time last year.

It has improved greatly and they are really making the cast work, there is no over focus on anyone/family in-particular which is welcoming as it gives everyone time to shine.
The storylines are moving slowly but with progression which helps give a stronger climax.

So I guess all of Mel’s family from the 90s all died in the past 20 years if Hunter is her only relative. She just can’t catch a break.

Mick is so awful, I know I keep saying it. But seriously, why would you hide panic attacks? Answer why would you change a flickering lightbulb before switching it off?

Posted by: Medellíam Aug 22 2019, 11:23 PM

Did Bailey really just say "how did we afforded it?"?

What's with the incidental music recently? Sometimes it works but it's felt very Hollyoaks this week.

I love Honey but I also love Mel’s absolute contempt for Honey whenever they share a scene.

Posted by: Medellíam Aug 23 2019, 10:55 PM

Brilliant performance from Tamzin tonight. Mel's return has been a waste but Tamzin has always put in her all into the role, particularly her relationship with Hunter which shone in those final scenes. I'll miss her when she goes.

I love how Rainie is still in pain from being kicked twice in the back about 5 weeks ago, yet Phil has is up and about absolutely fine following his attack couple of weeks back! laugh.gif

First teaser for the first week of September:

Posted by: T Boy Aug 24 2019, 08:02 AM

Tamzin is amazing and Mel is brilliant when she’s used. I knew they’d written her into a corner at New Year and the whole of her 2018 was a complete waste as she was mostly isolated from the rest of the cast. She does mix well when they let her, such a shame there’s not long left.

Hyped for her scenes with Lisa tho *.*

Posted by: King Rollo Aug 25 2019, 11:19 PM

Just caught up,I never expected the wonderful 'Little Bear' by Guillemots to be played on Eastenders (on Thursday's episode while Bailey was looking through her telescope on the roof of the Queen Vic).

Posted by: lewistgreen Aug 26 2019, 12:52 PM

Kate Oates has come forward to say that she took it on herself to completely change Halfway’s storyline. She referred to him as a ‘blank canvas’ with not much known about him and he was originally going to have a pregnancy storyline with Whitney drama.gif so glad that didn’t surface laugh.gif
I’m glad that they’re now dedicating time to underused characters and giving some depth to them. I never would have found myself liking Stuart or Mitch a year ago.

Posted by: JosephAvery Aug 26 2019, 01:42 PM

Yeah this show's in a better state than it has been for a LONG time thanks to Kate Oates. It doesn't feel like anybody is a spare part right now and the Halfway and Bobby storylines in particular are among the most impactful and interesting storylines in recent years undoubtedly!

Posted by: T Boy Aug 26 2019, 02:47 PM

I read what Kate said and agree with her 100%. If they were going down a baby route, they may as well have not axed Lee.

She’s seen what she has to play with and what didn’t make sense and found a way. Whitney and Callum were boring and could have easily been axed. This is a much better story for Callum and hopefully the last time Whitney tries to get down the aisle.

Posted by: pippa Aug 26 2019, 03:38 PM

The storyline has made Callum interesting, prior to this storyline he could have easily left without anyone noticing.
The storyline has made Callum, but Whitney has become less interesting as his relationship with Ben is far more intriguing to watch.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 26 2019, 04:21 PM

Whitney hasn’t been interesting for about 6 years but at least she isn’t a prize c**t anymore like she was a couple of years ago. I really rate Shona as an actress so I hope Kate has a plan for her too.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 26 2019, 04:26 PM

Whitney to me has been wasted for a long time.

I’ve said this before somewhere but I think she’s Eastenders equivalent to Maria CS.

Her only stories revolved around her love life time and time again.

I’d like to see Whitney become a success and get driven into being a business woman after this story concludes.

But I wouldn’t miss her that much if she were to leave. I think she could be great in the west end.

Posted by: Liаm Aug 26 2019, 04:40 PM

Whitney is arguably one of the most dispensable characters in soap right now, as said every storyline is the same and it just ends up being her desperate to be a Stepford wife and it ending badly. She had two incredible storylines with her abuse and pimping but since the latter she's not really done anything and the character has definitely run her course, even with a family link back in Tiffany.

It has been said that Bianca's return stint starts a year-long story though so hopefully that's something for Whitney to do!

I didn't understand why everyone was panicking before the fish tank burst so I rewatched the scene - I see there was a leak spraying out, although said leak was still spraying even after the tank burst! laugh.gif It also seemed like a lot of water compared to the size of the tank. Stunt of the year, I think not.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 26 2019, 09:26 PM

Also seeing comments on the year long Bianca story...

How’re we gonna get a year long story about her if she’s only in a handful of episodes.

I’m intrigued. I’m also surprised how they still ask her back considering she slags off the show everytime she leaves.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Aug 26 2019, 09:33 PM

That fish tank scene too.

More reaction to the fish tank than what there was the fire at the factory in ED and the collapse in CS all that fuss over a puddle of water.

Mel just randomly managing to pick out some random medication as if she’s some qualified practitioner as well.

Sonia’s Gareth Gates line too lol she’s winning at these one liners lately.

I guess it’s obvious but the letters Callum’s kept were from the funeral he attended last week or the week before so Ben isn’t his first Male lover?

Posted by: Medellíam Aug 26 2019, 10:11 PM

I think it's best not to look into the "year long storyline" regarding Bianca. It'll probably be a case of Bianca finding out about Tiffany's grooming and rape and encouraging her to seek justice.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 26 2019, 10:39 PM

I know it’s all ridiculous but I’m stanning everything Mel does atm.

It wasn’t until Sonia was banging on about remembering people that I remembered Jamie once existed. There are so many characters connected to him still in it, and he rarely gets a mention.

To do with her, they said she is the catalyst so it will be a storyline for Whitney or Tiff I assume, Liam is probably right though it'll maybe just be like Tiffany is kicked into gear by her and sets out for justice or decides a direction for her life after a heart to heart with her or something

Yeah it was his army friend who he loved and loved him back but I don't think it ever actually happened so he has residual unresolved feelings from that that probably caused his confusion over his sexuality and Ben brought it back up.

If they want a shock death I wouldn't actually mind it to be Keanu. He is the least interesting part of the Sheanu reveal tbh. That said, I think the Taylors have had their fair share of screentime this year and a death in the family would probably be too much.

Posted by: T Boy Aug 30 2019, 05:22 PM

But it’s also the way they treated Lee. He did wrong but they’ve never reflected on their own actions. Mick has found a dozen more situations where he can play victim and Whitney has rinsed and repeated her strategy with Lee with the next two people to lodge in his bedroom.

I thought tonight’s episode must’ve been a double one and I’d missed the first one when I tuned in at the start I was like what! I went back and watched Fridays too just to check I didn’t fall asleep or something.

Lisa’s a better character in my opinion.

Bianca's good in small doses but I find it off putting that she speaks against the show quite a lot yet is allowed back every few years.
It might be the press making things up and exaggerating but she does come across like she thinks she’s better than the other people on the show now she lives in LA.

Like... they don't even write characters as bi, which could have been the case with Callum really, but it annoys me when whenever a character has a same-sex relationship or fling "omg are you gay now!!!" drama.gif It was the same with Myra in Hollyoaks with Sally, her labelling herself a lesbian and other characters asking her that, I mean they don't need labels anyway if they just happen to fall for one person but soaps always just jump to "gay" right away as if it's a binary :/

I'm hoping it's just Whitney's perspective, like I could see why she would assume he's gay, and the show will actually acknowledge Calum as bisexual, but I'm not holding out much hope. You're right that in reality no-one should have to label themselves anything if they don't wish, but if the show is going to use labels then at least do it respectfully. The show has always been very hesitant to refer to Sonia as bisexual even though what we've seen on-screen would suggest she is, yet it's always she's straight again when she's with a man and she's lesbian again when she's with a woman.

That niggle aside, I thought this was a fab episode. Lots going on and the drama is hotting up! Didn't want the episode to end and cannot wait for Thursday!

Whilst I totally agree that soaps need to do better on bi representation, I don't think this is the storyline for that I must say! Callum's story seems to be very much about wanting to marry a woman so he can bury his real feelings for men deep down. It's clear he's ashamed of who he is, and it must stem back to his army days (I mean, he faked an injury to stop himself going back, that's where this storyline seemed to begin!). If he were bisexual, marrying a woman wouldn't be a big deal and this would simply be an affair storyline. I think it's much more than that!

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 3 2019, 08:21 PM

I can see your point Liam BUT I can also see it from the point of the characters. Especially someone like Bianca who’s quite ignorant as a person and doesn’t think before she speaks she’d be quick to immediately say he’s gay he’s gay, likewise with Whitney as at the moment she’s currently in shock.

As for who dies... maybe it really is someone who’s NOT Hunter. Kate Oates is known for causing a stir and she’d be able to pull off a surprise exit in my opinion.

What if he doesn’t want to go back because it got out about his sexuality?

I could imagine the army being a difficult environment for a gay man as typically you think of army men as being very much the old fashioned term men’s men.

This is what I think! I think the army is what's made him insecure about himself and his sexuality, and it's why he's felt the need to force his relationship with Whitney.

Am I missing something here? Have Hunter and Louise aged about 7 years in 2 years? I know the actors are in their 20's but is Hunter not meant to be like 15 and is running about with a full beard lmao?

Posted by: T Boy Sep 3 2019, 09:04 PM

Hunter is nearly 17 but the full beard is a bit much laugh.gif the actor is about 23 tho and Louise is 22 in real life.

Whitney in making a sensible decision SHOCKER.

Can’t really see anyone other than Hunter dying. Mel is leaving but I think it’d be foolish to kill her off (well I think the same about Hunter but he is more disposable) and though Bianca and Lisa aren’t sticking around I doubt they’d kill either of them.

With Louise being in the Vic, I guess the baby could be in danger.

I’d love it to be a shock death but they’ve let us down many a time in that regard.

Legit.

He wants Jack dead so he definitely won’t die and will probably end up a hero.

And I know they weren’t blood related but Ben seems to have inherited his ex step dad Gavin’s ability to survive multiple frequent head wounds. How many times have people hit him in the past 6 months.

Posted by: Medellíam Sep 3 2019, 09:39 PM

It's just been spoiled that someone else gets shot, although there's no way they'll be killing them off.

I think the facial hair on Hunter is pretty realistic. It's hardly a proper beard, it's just overgrown bumfluff and I know a fair few people his age that have facial hair like that.

Posted by: Liаm Sep 3 2019, 09:40 PM

I'm so hoping there's a surprise exit! Idk who I'd "like" it to be, for the first time in years Whitney has somewhere to go with the aftermath of this going on or else I'd say just kill her off. I think it'll just be Hunter but one thing Eastenders lacks compared to other soaps is the big surprise exits and twists, so I'd love it if they really pulled a curveball as long as it's not Callum or Ben!

QUOTE(JosephStyles @ Sep 3 2019, 09:06 PM) *
Whilst I totally agree that soaps need to do better on bi representation, I don't think this is the storyline for that I must say! Callum's story seems to be very much about wanting to marry a woman so he can bury his real feelings for men deep down. It's clear he's ashamed of who he is, and it must stem back to his army days (I mean, he faked an injury to stop himself going back, that's where this storyline seemed to begin!). If he were bisexual, marrying a woman wouldn't be a big deal and this would simply be an affair storyline. I think it's much more than that!

I see what you mean but I think he could still have those sorts of conflict and be bisexual. That would be a more interesting and original concept for me: someone who does have feelings for women and is able to have a happy relationship with one so is confused as to why they're feeling similar emotions towards men. Or maybe they're not attracted to all men necessarily, they're attracted to the person and it just so happens that it's a guy that makes them feel those things.

QUOTE(Jordan Lee @ Sep 3 2019, 09:21 PM) *
I can see your point Liam BUT I can also see it from the point of the characters. Especially someone like Bianca who’s quite ignorant as a person and doesn’t think before she speaks she’d be quick to immediately say he’s gay he’s gay, likewise with Whitney as at the moment she’s currently in shock.

I agree, it makes sense from a character perspective but there's a way of showing how characters react and balancing that with how the show perceives and portrays sexuality.

thisssss

i think that callum would have been a good character to write as bi bc he is convincing when he says he loves whitney and wants a future with her etc idk why soaps are ao adverse to the idea of having bi characters sad.gif

i thought ben could be the shock death but photos of a funeral airing later in the year show he's at it so that rules that out. i think callum could get shot but not killed and that makes ben tell him how he feels or whatever as he almost lost another guy he loves etc (presuming his wee rant to keanu about love being taken away etc was about callum)

Posted by: lewistgreen Sep 4 2019, 03:06 PM

I assumed the love being taken away speech he gave was because Paul died

Yeah I thought it was about Paul too.

I love how they’ve used Ben’s past effectively though, I just wish I could remember something vaguely interesting about Paul.

Linda Carter is set for a big storyline where

She develops a drinking problem

Posted by: Medellíam Sep 4 2019, 09:54 PM

I'm sure Kellie will smash it, but wouldn't that storyline be more suited to Shirley?

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 4 2019, 09:59 PM

I think it shows that it could happen to anyone and sometimes the people you often least suspect as well.

I’m excited for this its got great potential.

Posted by: JosephStyles Sep 4 2019, 10:01 PM

It makes sense with everything that's been piling up for Linda recently! Worrying about Ollie and his diagnosis, Mick's health and her own cancer scare.

Posted by: T Boy Sep 4 2019, 10:05 PM

Well it’s natural anyone married to Mick would go down that route.

But it does feel a bit tacked on. I can think of any number of characters that could have this story instead just like Mick’s Mental health story-which has been the real weak link in recent stories. I almost feel they are trying to turn her into Angie Watts.

I guess it could be good, but it could also be as lacklustre as her cancer ‘storyline’.

It's just we have over 10 years of history with Shirley, we've seen her time and time again go straight for the bottle when things get tough. I think it would add that extra depth to the storyline and it would give us the chance to see behind the mask and explore why exactly it's her immediate response. Also, Linda Henry needs something to sink her teeth in as she's been on the sidelines too long and I'm tired of her being there just to be angry and shout insults at the bar.

Denise would also work as we've seen her depend on alcohol in times of trouble and she too desperately needs something to do.

I have no doubt that Kellie Bright will do a fantastic job and I'm the show will make it a slow-burning story so we see Linda gradually become more dependent on alcohol, I just think it would have been better to play upon what we have already seen on-screen. If they want to show how Linda struggles, they should explore her eating disorder which was picked up and dropped within the space of perhaps two episodes a few years back.

Posted by: Liаm Sep 4 2019, 10:22 PM

It kind of makes sense, but I agree Denise would have been perfect, Diane Parish hasn't had anything to do in SO long. I guess her life's going well atm with the business and Jack but it could have shown that alcoholism can affect even those who's lives are going well and it can consume that, it could have played into things and maybe put the business in danger, ruined things with Jack.

Kellie Bright will smash it but it looks to be a Carter heavy next year or so with that, Ollie's autism and Mick's panic attacks drama.gif

I totally forgot about the Linda eating disorder story which was heavily rumoured.

I see your point now and I actually in hindsight feel that could’ve been a real moment for the show.

I wonder if Linda’s story could lead to an accident where her child is injured too perhaps after she’s looking after him?

Posted by: T Boy Sep 5 2019, 05:16 AM

I don’t think the ‘it shows it can happen to anyone’ really washes because everything seems to happen to Mick and Linda and no one else.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 5 2019, 08:51 AM

I totally forgot about her eating dis-order storyline but Kellie is brilliant at nailing the big stuff and she will with this too. I agree about shirley she needs her own storyline, denise got far overused under Sean o Connors reign and it's gone the opposite way now and she hasnt had much in ages.

What an episode though! Incredibly tense throughout and I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen.

I knew Hunter would end up dead that was always obvious. But what a week! Mel has possibly had all the tragic storylines now.

Sonia queen of saving everyone *.*

And lol at Bex thinking anyone would give a shit.

Also it’s eerie to realise how much Hunter’s death mirrored his father’s-both has Louise Mitchell hostage at the time.

Best episode in ages!! Pretty obvious Hunter was going to die but I did think for a moment it might be Mel in the slow mo section when Sharon shouted.

I really thought at a few points Mel was gonna get shot, that's a big part of why it felt so tense. We all knew that the likes of say Louise, Sonia, Mick, Linda wouldn't be shot but Mel it was kind of plausible but would be huge and a shock still.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 6 2019, 11:00 PM

It’s a shame Hunters death leaked before hand but it was still a good episode and it was actually a pretty good exit that he got in the end even though he’s been killed off.

Definitely the best soap this week.

I really enjoyed all the episodes this week and last nights was very tense and well shot but I cannot get over king Phil being thrown into the mix, was no need and I'm sure as hell the police would of had the back way covered and he wouldn't of been able to just walk through and into the bar, into the barrel store without making a noise maybe ( how they ever have stock I don't know as its always unlocked) but the other door no way, not without noise and being noticed it was laughable and spoiled for me what was a good intense episode

She’s tweeted that she finished filming and Mel’s in it for a while yet. I believe November is when she will bow out. There is a picture of her and Lisa in E20 with a ‘50’ balloon in the background doing the rounds which I assume means she’s still onscreen for Sharon’s 50th at the end of October.

Autumn/winter preview from the Metro:

QUOTE
Christmas, New Year, and the 35th Anniversary
Kate Oates: "There’s so much going on in Walford from autumn, well into the New Year. But, of course, in true EastEnders tradition, Christmas is huge. Much of it will circulate around a very complicated and messy love affair — so expect some major Sheanu drama as it all explodes….but we’ve got some twists and surprises in that story which last right through to New Year. And then we move into the 35th anniversary in February! I can’t say much at all about it now — except we have a big Carter story at the forefront, and some great drama with Whitney too — so it is going to be a very exciting time for the show. Between our huge September kick-off with the wedding week, right through to the anniversary beyond, there is no let up. I hope everyone will be as excited as Jon and I are!"

Linda Carter’s alcoholism
Linda’s had plenty on her plate this year, what with her concerns about Ollie never far from her mind, then there’s her recent cancer scare — not to mention Mick’s (Danny Dyer) panic attacks. Factor in her beloved husband’s recent stint in prison — and the extreme measures she had to go to in order to get the truth out of Stuart (Ricky Champ) — and it’s no wonder she’s struggling to cope.

With more stress piling on in the coming weeks, Linda will turn to alcohol to escape the pressures of everything that’s going on and, as she drinks more and more, it will soon become a much bigger problem — one that she’ll be unable to hide.

The Panesar brothers arrive with a bang
A brand new family is on its way to Walford in the form of the Panesar brothers. Described by show bosses as ‘charming by nature – but a force to be reckoned with’, the Panesars are comprised of siblings Kheerat (Jaz Deol), Jags (Amar Adatia) and Vinny (Shiv Jalota), and it’s safe to assume that they will ruffle a few feathers upon their arrival. What’s more, they’re set to feud with one of Walford’s big families — but which one?

Executive Producer Jon Sen said: "EastEnders is a show which prides itself on diversity and representing modern London and modern Britain and we were really keen on finding a way of telling stories from the Sikh community, so they arrive — these three siblings, who are very different in and of themselves."

A new chapter for Whitney
Whitney’s world came crashing down when she discovered that fiancé Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) had cheated on her with Ben (Max Bowden), but — in spite of this story having come to a close — there’s plenty more to come for the young woman, and Kate and Jon are keen to push the character to the front and centre of the show, with a storyline that will see her through for the next couple of years!

Jon Sen said: "We talk often in the story office about Whitney and her troubled past, and her history with men, and her bad luck in relationships. Shona plays tragedy so well and Whitney is such a compelling character. She is a character you can give these really tough stories to, and she plays them with such beauty and conviction — and power. You err away from her being happy! When I joined, Kate and I had a conversation where we both said ‘We’re fascinated by Whitney. This enigma — this character with this past that we all know about — and the fact that she can never find happiness, and where do we go?’ and we agreed that we wanted to push her to the front and centre of the show in terms of investing in that character. This story becomes a chapter in a much longer arc that we have planned going forward. Without saying too much, this is just one more chapter in her story, but overtime — over the next 18 months — she learns from everything that you’re going to see, and going on into Christmas, and the 35th next year."

Kate said: "We know where we’re taking Whitney over the next couple of years which is always a joy with a character because you don’t always get that."

Jon mused: "Maybe she will find happiness — eventually — but it may take some time."

Tiffany and Keegan’s relationship
Tiffany (Maisie Smith) and Keegan’s (Zack Morris) relationship will be of huge focus moving into the autumn. The pair fought their feelings for long enough before finally succumbing to them in a romantic moment outside the tube station several months ago, but what’s next for the pair?

Jon said: "They’re lovely, it’s a wonderful dynamic, superbly performed by those two — there’s a real chemistry between them — that’s got loads of warmth and heart and we’re really investing in that."

What's next for Callum and Ben?
Callum might have finally admitted to having an affair with Ben, but his journey is far from over. Yes, there’s a long road ahead for him, and he’ll struggle with everything that’s transpired — but will he be able to come to terms with who he is?

Then there’s his connection with Ben to consider. With Whitney no longer an obstacle, could their be a future for him with the Mitchell lad?

The pair’s similar family backgrounds brought them together in the first place, and with Ben knowing what its like to wrestle with your sexuality, perhaps Callum will be drawn to him once more now that he’s faced with the task of coming to terms with who he is? Regardless of what transpires, it’s safe to assume that there’s plenty more story to come here.

Honey takes action
Adam’s (Stephen Rahman-Hughes) affair with Habiba (Rukku Nahar) has been the source of much conflict for Honey (Emma Barton), as she’s been forced to question just how much she really knows about the man she loves.

In spite of her having clearly copped on to what her beau’s been up to, she’s managed to avoid confronting him on the matter, so expect more drama from the pair over the coming months, as Honey remains conflicted over what to do for the best. However, one thing’s for sure: she will take action.

What does the future hold for Chantelle and Gray?
Chantelle (Jessica Plummer) and Gray’s (Toby Alexander-Smith) seemingly perfect marriage is anything but, given that the solicitor is physically assaulting his wife at every given opportunity.

However, with a strong support network around her in the form of her family and work colleagues, the coming weeks will see Chantelle stand up to her abusive husband on more than one occasion.

Kate teased: "We’ve got great stuff for Chantelle and Gray. That storyline will be continuing EastEnders’ tradition of stories which explore really important issues."

Will Bobby find peace?
Since being released from prison, Bobby (Clay Milner Russell) has struggled in adjusting to life back in Walford. The young lad has been shunned by the community, berated by Rainie (Tanya Franks) and haunted by visions of dead sister Lucy (Hetti Bywater).

In spite of him having made several attempts to do so already, Bobby’s been unable to confront his past — which is something that will be explored further in the coming episodes. Will he finally manage to succeed in putting the past to bed, and thus be able to move on?

Sharon and Keanu’s affair explodes
Sharon (Letitia Dean) and Keanu’s (Danny Walters) steamy affair might seemingly be a thing of the past, but the truth about the pair’s dalliance is set to come to light at Christmas — a time of year that has something of a reputation for being anything but quiet in Walford.

In addition to the explosive Sheanu reveal, there’s also the fact that Sharon’s baby is Keanu’s and not Phil’s (Steve McFadden) to factor in, so it’s safe to assume that the Mitchell hard-man will become hellbent on revenge — but what will transpire? Then there’s Louise (Tilly Keeper) to consider, who’ll no doubt be heartbroken when the truth comes to light. How will she react?

Regardless of what happens, it’s safe to assume that the dynamics in the Mitchell clan will never be the same again.

So it seems the Sheanu reveal will take place at Christmas. Was hoping it would be October for Sharon's 50th and 25 years since Sharongate, although I understand the Sheanu storyline is has the biggest characters involved out of current storylines and will therefore be the biggest draw. I suspect October and the 35th anniversary will see big developments in the storyline anyway.

The show has really built momentum and i think it has managed to get to the point where we both needed and wanted the show to be for a long time.
It has taken sometime to get the show to where it is and it is wonderful to have EastEnders back to must see tv once again.
Plenty of action the last few weeks and even better is its highly indicating there is even better to come.
It is the best of the soaps right now and with how the show is running the Christmas episodes should be gripping to say the least.

I did too. I know a lot of people like Stuart that struggle to get their head around sexuality but are willing to accept it for the sake of a friend or family member - it's not perfect but it's sometimes the best one can hope for. It's a better reaction to that of Whitney who seems to be more offended that Callum likes guys than she is that he cheated on her. I get it's a reaction one may have in real life but I hope the show challenges this sort of reaction.

Me too, it's realistic. When he beat up Ben and didn't know want to even know about Callum, it's about the best we can hope for that he accepts it and tries to get on or understand because he wants Callum to be happy. It's good that the show will show that those kind of reactions can change, I expect as they're redeeming Stuart a lot, he'll grow into it and properly accept it. It could mean the world to people watching and struggling with coming out due to reactions from relatives like Stuart!

Can't wait for the return of the year tonight: SONIA'S TRUMPET!

Posted by: lewistgreen Sep 13 2019, 08:45 PM

Definitely here for Mel catching onto Sharon and Keanu.

That scene with Grey and Chantelle was so difficult to watch, he is infuriating which means the whole plot line/acting is fantastic

Posted by: T Boy Sep 13 2019, 08:49 PM

Living for Mel sussing Sheanu in seconds when no one got there last Summer despite them rarely being seen without each other.

Sonia’s trumpet to win Best Actor over Danny Dyer please.

The Chantelle and Gray story is being done so well. He is absolutely repulsive.

Stanning Mystic Mel

Echoing the love for Chantelle and Gray's storyline, awful to watch but both are playing a blinder.

Posted by: Medellíam Sep 13 2019, 09:13 PM

Remember when Sharon convinced Louise that the recording of her and Keanu was just him helping her to exercise? :')

Agreed regarding the Chantelle/Gray story - both actors have really stepped up to the mark since it began. It's been really hard viewing. I'd be interested in seeing some form
of 'redemption' for Gray at the end of this. Obviously there's no excusing his behaviour but there must be some reasoning behind it rather than him simply being evil, so it would be interesting to see him confront his behaviour and seek professional help. There's no winners in domestic abuse and I think it would be helpful to show that there is a way out not only for the victim, but for the abuser too.

Lmaooo that sex recording being passed off as a bedroom work out!!! Sooo unrealistic.

Yes!! I had heard rumours as he had been spotted around Elstree but I'm glad it's confirmed. The show has the chance to right the wrongs it made during the latter end of his storyline in 2017 so I'm trusting Kate Oates and Jon Sen to do the character justice!

I really hope it does and his family realise how badly they mishandled his situation. I hope it’s not just him supporting his parents on their ongoing health issues after they just ignored his.

I’m not confident because all the articles about this seem to say he’s there to help his parents with their difficulties.
So business as usual.

I'm going to be more interested in his dynamic with Callum tbh considering they're supposed to be friends and haven't spoken since his arrival :')

Posted by: linds Sep 16 2019, 12:43 AM

honestly every time i watch chantelle and gray i just want chantelle to tell karen about it!! shes so gonna lose the baby because of him, maybe that will be when both of them realise how bad things are etc or hopefully chantelle has more sense and leaves before then for the sake of her kids (including the unborn one). i definitely think it will be karen to find out first od maybe mitch so he can have his "i knew he was a bad one and should have done something before" drama

i really like mel and lisas dynamic together and im hoping that's something they can build on now hunter is dead erc

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 16 2019, 12:55 AM

See I think Bailey might find out first or maybe one of Karen’s other sons who we hardly see?

Also does anyone else find the back of Phils head hilarious how the size of whatever that is stuck on the back of it after his accident. It really makes me laugh now i hope he keeps it for a long while yet my fave soap prosthetic since the time Leanne had a black eye in coronation street which seemed to double in size by the episode for weeks before disappearing altogether laugh.gif

I'm so not looking forward to this. Mitch hates Gray because Gray is the parent that Mitch never was, not because he suspects Gray is a bad person or suspects something is wrong with the relationship.

yea exactly but you just know he's gonna get on his high horse over it :')

Posted by: pippa Sep 16 2019, 04:48 PM

I would not be surprised to see the Gray storyline end with a who killed him.
It will be a long time away but when its revealed it could go that way.

Posted by: Liаm Sep 16 2019, 05:45 PM

They said it gets a lot darker, I think either she'll lose the baby when he attacks her or maybe she's near to death or something and it's one of those life changing things that's the catalyst to her telling everyone and getting out of there, or they could do Chantelle killing him in self defence, I think that would be a great topical storyline to do, more than a who killed him story that's just another murder.

Posted by: Medellíam Sep 16 2019, 08:34 PM

Bex is just one of those kids at school you'd want to tell to fuck off for crying over getting A instead of an A*, isn't she? She's the least sympathetic character at the best of times but I just can't deal with her acting like she's so hard done by.

Posted by: pippa Sep 16 2019, 08:35 PM

I would prefer Chantelle killing him in self defense ahead of a guess who killed him storyline.
I think a great storyline would be for Chantelle to attack him and for him to survive but end up with a disability on the back of her self defense leaving him at her mercy.

LOL yeah she is.

I’m sure everyone went to school or some form of education like place with a Bex.

I honestly thought she didn’t actually get in and she’s just pretending but did she genuinely get in?

Kate Oates on the Gray/Chantelle storyline:

QUOTE
The domestic abuser - who is played by actor Toby Alexander in the BBC soap - regularly terrorises his wife Chantelle with mental and physical abuse and manipulation to keep her under his control.

However, despite his vile actions, fans have wondered if the soap could buck the trend and show an abuser who could redeem himself after years of having professional characters as villains.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Kate Oates hinted it could happen. She said: "I know there's been a little bit of conversation about the fact that EastEnders always make their be-suited educated characters villains and it's so crucial to his character because he works in the law fighting for the little guy.

"That confuses Chantelle because he's got a social conscience so he's the opposite of her father who was completely flaky and couldn't hold down a job as a guy who really does hold down a job.

"Plus the fact that he's part of this aspirational lifestyle. Gray has got a lot of redeeming qualities."

Kate added: "Abuse is so often about power. And he enjoys the power that he has over her.

"And characters can change and they can be redeemed, but I believe in those kind of dynamics that ultimately the victim, in this case,Chantelle, their first job is to look after themselves and if Gray could be redeemed later than that's up to him.

"If Chantele was my friend I'd want her out of there and I'd want her to take the kids with her."

She added: "Chantelle's problem at the moment is that she's telling nobody.

"Nobody has a single hint that Gray is like this. So I think in a way, not letting anybody in, anybody at all, she's actually building higher walls around herself but that's going to be part of the problem."

Kate and executive producer Jon Sen have been keen to avoid repeating EastEnders most famous domestic abuse storylines where Little Mo killed her evil husband Trevor with a hot iron after years of abuse.

Speaking about the comparisons, Kate said: "I knew that they would come, but I think that they will be short lived because the characters are so different.

"And where the stories goes is very different and we know where it's going to go and it's challenging, but important.

"I think comparisons with Little Mo in some ways are very flattering because that story was brilliant. It was incredible, it was so well performed, so brave and I can remember really vividly certain elements of that story, which shows what a great story it was as part of classic EastEnders history.

"So in some ways the comparison was flattering but I think that anyone that watches this story unfold will see something very different."

Bex is so shit. She should be excited for uni not desperate to live a mundane life on a market stall. I can’t remember the last time she did anything good.

Loool they didn’t do their research

Posted by: Liаm Sep 16 2019, 09:17 PM

There was a time when Bex was really promising, throughout a fair bit of the bullying storyline, but that feels so distant now. I think the storyline would have been much more effective, and the character far easier to feel sympathy for, had she just worked hard to get in, been excited and happy and then struggled at uni and it could have been a really good mental health storyline that highlights something a lot of students struggle with. God knows what direction they've tried to/are trying to go in, but they've killed any sympathy you could have for her and I just want to see her fail now laugh.gif

lol I missed that. It is The Sun, I'm afraid.

I thought it was interesting that Kate acknowledged fans' comments about a possible 'redemption' for Gray - something I considered myself - and talked about wanting to tell stories in different ways. Soaps have a habit of using the same sort of formula and us fans can usually guess the sort of direction plots will go, so it's refreshing to have someone in charge who is keen to challenge this and keep us excited. She definitely did this with the route she took Bobby in so I'm interested to see how she and Jon handle the Gray/Chantelle storyline.

Posted by: linds Sep 17 2019, 09:29 AM

the more i see of kate oats talking about what she wants to do with the show the more i stan, this is the best era of eastenders in a long time!

i dont want to see a gray murder storyline, i feel like he has a lot of layers to him that we've not seen yet so I'd much prefer a redemption arc or the like instead. i think seeing him lose everything because of his abuse would be interesting. if chantelle and the kids leave, he loses his job - get him to do a stint in jail even and see what kind of person he is when he comes out.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 17 2019, 11:52 AM

Yes redemption with consequences could be a good storyline for Gray. I would have liked to have seen the abuse in the opposite roles and chantelle to be beating Gray as this isnt touched on as much. The story telling is great at the moment and i agree we have waited a long time for the show to be consistently enjoyable, I'm back to looking forward to each episode again.

Posted by: T Boy Sep 17 2019, 05:52 PM

I agree, too often abusers go unpunished by being killed off. He needs to lose everything and reflect upon his actions. The storyline really is only just beginning.

Bex is such a drip I honestly wouldn’t care if they packed her off to Oxford and they forgot about her for a few years like Libby but I know that won’t happen. All this ‘Bex is a hero’ tripe is just that and she really isn’t.

I want more Laura Beale mentions tbh. Her death is what really started all this for Bobby.

EastEnders have been teasing on Twitter that something's happening tomorrow and, given it's been a Bobby-centric week, I wouldn't be surprised if they've lined up a shock Jane return.

She's definitely missing from this story and even a week's worth of episodes would be enough give us some answers.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 19 2019, 10:50 PM

A Jane return if it’s done like Biancas could sort of work to be fair! Come back get involved in a handful of episodes and then maybe Bobby will leave to stay with Jane for a few weeks too before he then comes back.

The actress is doing a play isnt she I read a article of that on digital spy so I don’t think she’d stick around if she does indeed return. Unless she does a Lisa Riley in Emmerdale and returns briefly then comes back properly later on down the line.

Even if she doesn’t appear on screen I hope she’s at least mentioned more.

Posted by: Liаm Sep 19 2019, 11:04 PM

Jane is definitely really missing from this, fair enough if the actress is busy or didn't want to come back but given that she was only driven out by Max and given the writers' commitment to St. Max's redemption, it seems perfect timing for her to come back. Not only that, but it really doesn't seem in character for Jane to not even call or contact Bobby when he needs her most, however she left things in Walford.

If the actress can't return they can at least mention that Bobby went to visit her or that she just called or something.

To be fair that’s what happened last time IIRC. She had a surprise return then went and then returned full time for the Lucy storyline!

Posted by: T Boy Sep 20 2019, 03:26 PM

Jane’s exit was so bizarre. It wasn’t publicised until it aired and she only left because of Max. His scheme was foiled just a couple of months later and she could have easily come back.

It also helps that she hasn’t been overly judgemental and sticking her nose in everything like she used to. Heck, it also helps that they’ve made her daughter into an unlikeable drip so you find yourself siding with Sonia every time.

Suicide attempt story confirmed for Bex.

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Sep 23 2019, 11:58 AM

For god's sake. No one is going to sympathise. It woulda been better if she didn't magically get the grades, really wanted to go and had loads of pressure to go, ended up in clearing and then got that storyline. Then there'd be sympathy. As is we're just fastforwarding her parts, like we do with Sharon.

Posted by: pippa Sep 23 2019, 01:27 PM

I disagree that no one will be interested as i think it is an important issue to tackle (not just the suicide attempt) but college can bring various insecurities and issues.

Posted by: Liаm Sep 23 2019, 02:14 PM

The actress is definitely capable of pulling it off if we look at the bullying storyline and how great she was, I think it could be good! It's definitely an important issue to tackle, I think they should have gone down the route of her struggling at uni in the first place rather than all this exam crap.

This!

Jasmine is a strong enough actress to serve the storyline good if the scripts are strong.

Posted by: T Boy Sep 23 2019, 04:50 PM

The actress can tackle it and it’s definitely something that needs coverage. I’m sure it might have been a bit more relatable though if she wanted to go and didn’t get the grades. Speaking from personal experience, my cousin attempted to take her life after not getting the result she wanted.

I just hope it is good though because I’ve found every scene with Bex lately to be pretty underwhelming.

100% this. It just isn't a relatable storyline with how they've gone about it. It would speak to a lot more people.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 23 2019, 04:56 PM

I honestly thought she didn’t get the grades tbh until a poster on here reminded me that she did.

So I do agree with pretty much everyone who said that should’ve been the catalyst for it.

Posted by: T Boy Sep 23 2019, 04:59 PM

I mean, I guess the point is she feels she’s lost control and is being forced into something she doesn’t want to do but it’s not been that convincing. Her family haven’t actually piled too much pressure on her and she’s barely even tried to explain that she doesn’t want to go to uni.

I guess what’s missing in this story is motivation for her to do anything but uni. Back when she wanted a music career, it would have made a bit more sense.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Sep 23 2019, 05:02 PM

I feel like Bernie Taylor could’ve been a better candidate for this story if they wanted it to be a female character.

But the Bex actress is capable. I’m guessing it’ll build on screen more throughout this week.

Posted by: Medellíam Sep 23 2019, 05:13 PM

Bex's storyline is so confusing. For ages she wanted nothing more than to go to uni; now it seems like she doesn't want to go but it's so hard to work out as she kept working really hard to get the grades she needed, then it seemed she did get the grades she needed but was still not satisfied. As I've said before, she's just one of those people who isn't happy unless they're moaning about something.

I'm sure the suicide attempt will be well written but I hope the focus is more on Sonia's reaction as I really don't think the actress is up to the job. She's never impressed me, she's too aware of the camera and has the same facial expressions for everything.

PREEEEEEECH!!!

This storyline should see Natalie deliver some strong scenes and it may help Jasmine show what she can do.

Mel causing Sharon to absolutely shit herself *.*

Yeah that's what I don't get, everyone has said it's been fine if she doesn't want to go, and we don't even know what she's studying, what she wants to do. I'd have understood it a lot more if say she had a pressuring family, maybe if the storyline was done with someone like Yaz from Hollyoaks (first example I could think of) where her mum is a doctor, her brother's a lawyer, maybe they force her to go to uni and do that but she wants to be a model or actress. I just don't get where the pressure side is coming from, if she didn't even want to go to uni and her parents didn't mind, why are we supposed to sympathise when really it doesn't matter? It's definitely important to explore, but it would have been better if the angle had been mental health, in the case of Bex, not the pressure leading to it. She'd be much more sympathetic as a character if she worked hard, got the grades, got there but her mental health was dragging her down and keeping her from being happy, enjoying it and looking to the future.

It just feels like they weren't sure where to go other than "Bex struggling" and just kind of went along with it, hopefully they've happened upon something good with this now.

Posted by: pippa Sep 24 2019, 01:49 PM

The storyline has diverted into different areas which makes it harder to identify the real problem.
The pressure appears self inflicted and maybe that is the area they will explore and highlight.
Bexs seemed to suffer with what she sees as others expecting her to achieve.

Posted by: linds Sep 24 2019, 02:19 PM

i think they need to give bex more to struggle with than just not wanting to go to uni for people to understand why she'd want to kill herself because looking at it on paper, shes got good grades, she's got into one of the best unis, she very much has a future and often if you're suicidal that's something you feel you dont have. okay its not what she wants to do but she's a smart girl, surely she'd realise all she has to do is tell someone that and then think about an alternative? sonia isn't the type to not support that either, her family aren't even pressuring her in general and like i said, shes got the grades which means there are other options for her.

maybe if this storyline isn't happening soon it might give the writers more things to give bex to struggle with. it would be more relatable if she has a gradual build up of things not working out for her. I agree with Liam in that it would have worked better if she wqs struggling at uni because there's the pressures of maintaining grades and living away from home, having a social life etc and if bex isn't doing that and also feels really alone bc shes away from her family then that could be more understandable. ik mental health is tricky and saying someone doesn't have enough to feel suicidal over is a bit dickish but i cant help but feel it's a bit of an extreme outcome for just not wanting to go to uni but we'll see how it pans out i suppose

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Sep 24 2019, 02:23 PM

Hoping we get some scenes away at uni however for this.

Looking forward to the next Ben recast, as this one is just not doing it.

Cellulite Keanu must be the worst actor in the show's history. My god he's crap. His moves are: touch nose, look away to the right, grimmace, walk like Phil Mitchell, touch nose, point.

Posted by: lewistgreen Sep 25 2019, 06:42 AM

Whaaa? I think this Ben Mitchell is great

I have to agree about Keanu though.. his substance amounts to a few words amongst “Where’s Louise?” every few minutes.

Posted by: linds Sep 25 2019, 01:29 PM

yea i really like this ben as well!

Posted by: pippa Sep 25 2019, 02:07 PM

It took me time to warm to this new Ben but i like him and he fits in very well to the show now.

I'm not even certain it's Natalie Cassidy! laugh.gif Looks more like Morgana Robinson as Sonia.

Whitney in another doomed romance story though mellow.gif

It’s all she gets

Posted by: T Boy Sep 26 2019, 05:14 AM

f*** sake, if she gets engaged AGAIN...

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 26 2019, 10:12 AM

Ya I'm not a big whitney fan as her storylines are repetitive. I'm not really enjoying the Bobby storyline as I'm finding the actor is still very wooden with his performances. Lisa and mel are such a joy in the recent episodes they have great on screen chemistry and remind me of classic eastenders.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 26 2019, 10:42 PM

Really wish she wasnt leaving.

Posted by: lewistgreen Sep 27 2019, 05:49 PM

Not that it’s a massive issue but how long are they keeping it at 8:30pm on a Friday? Corrie being on for an hour and this pushed back just seems odd

Posted by: Algernon Monqueef Sep 27 2019, 05:53 PM

Bet they kill her off with parallelism, with her stealing Louise from Sharon, or even Sharon's baby to make up for Hunter, with her passing the baby/ opening Louise's door. She'll help them escape but blow up, just like Steve and Phil. Sigh. What a load of old codswollop!

The good thing aboot this Sheanu reveal thing is that there are lots of actors involved. This means his atrocious acting will be protected by having lots of good actors around him!

Sharon will be nowhere near due to give birth by the time Mel leaves.
