BuzzJack Music Forum _ Spice Girls _ Melanie C - 'Version of Me'

Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 29 2016, 07:06 PM

Just confirmed on Twitter by the lady herself.

If it's anything as good an album as 'The Sea' I am on board with this. Crazy to think she is now seven albums into a solo career!

Posted by: ___∆___ Aug 29 2016, 08:02 PM

So ready for this! Come and slay us once more Mel! yahoo.gif

Posted by: Martyn Aug 29 2016, 08:11 PM

Is that the cover? Or just a teaser?

More than likely a teaser going on other recent Instagram posts she's made!

Welcome back. I know her album will under-perform like many of her others, but her albums are always worth purchasing.

Something as epic as 'Burn' please!! *.*

I'm hoping the fact you need less than 2k in sales to go Top 40 plus the fact Melanie always does all the promo she can (Daytime TV, Magazines, Radio etc,) means that in chart position terms she should do well even though it will fade away quite quickly.

She's released on her own label for over 10 years.

I always find that I like one of her albums, then don't like the next, then I like the one after etc... So seeing as though Stages was a complete non-event for me, I should like this one!

Posted by: ThePensmith Aug 29 2016, 10:07 PM

I was about to say Mel's self released all her music for the last 10 years.

The Sun have Tweeted there is a comeback interview with her in the Bizarre column tomorrow in which she apparently berates the notion of the whole Spice Girls GEM thing.

Hope she's not going for column inches regarding the GEM thing, she didn't want to be part of it which is totally fine but she can't berate the other girls for doing so or as a way of saying thank you to the fans who 20 years on are still supporting!

Posted by: Jaÿ Aug 29 2016, 11:47 PM

wub.gif Finally! To think it's already been 5 years since Melanie's last (proper) studio album. ohmy.gif

It seems she's been exploring different sounds for this album, judging by who's she been working with (for instance, Sons of Sonix) so it'll be interesting to hear the results and if she deviates quite far from her usual pop/rock sound. Very much looking forward to hearing the single that precedes the album release. Not expecting any sort of success from a single, but like ___∆___ says, I hope she achieves a decent album chart position.

~

Here's a new Melanie C article, which she's written herself: http://www.thelovemagazine.co.uk/posts/6886/a-good-sport-mel-c-aka-sporty-spice-tells-love-about-fame-therapy-and-why-she-won-t-be-joining-the-spice-girls-reunion She talks about deciding not to be a part of a Spice Girls reunion.

Lest we forget, she was the one in 2007 who was point blank about not wanting to do it then. I've read the interview Jay just posted. A lot of what she says is sensible and measured, not "berating" as Dan Wootton made out (what even is the point of that man?).

But whilst part of me agrees with what she said about the Olympics in 2012 being hard to ever top, part of me also thinks "Yes, but who's to say it wouldn't work as a four or three?". It's been a quartet before.

I think this is going to be an interesting album certainly. As has been cited the recent Sons of Sonix collaboration was a move forward for her from her usual sound. If it gets good promo and with the way album sales are these days she'll easily be looking at a top 40 album.

Posted by: vibe Aug 30 2016, 10:06 AM

I can't wait for this album !! I am surprised she is releasing it after the spice saga, when she does promo all they will ask her about is why she is not doing the reunion!

I'm a huge fan and hope for some solo shows very soon.

I can fathom how the 3 spices can do a live show without her ? She sings all the adlibs etc ....

I don't pay much attention to Mel aside from a few tunes from her singles catalogue but The Sea was actually really really good, so I shall have to take a listen to what comes out of this era! I'm not a huge fan of Numb so hopefully that isn't indicative of the whole album.

Can Tuesday come already? w00t.gif

Posted by: ___∆___ Sep 4 2016, 02:30 PM

Yes!! Get that single launch on R2 Melanie heart.gif Loving 'Numb' but that seemed to slip by unnoticed by everyone but guessing that was more of a buzz release for the album?

Posted by: buzz_person Sep 6 2016, 10:28 AM

I really like this, especially the chorus.

Really good! ohmy.gif If this was by Zara Larsson or Dua Lipa it would be a hit I'm sure. Didn't expect to like this so much!

Posted by: ThePensmith Sep 6 2016, 06:26 PM

Loving the single! Very current in its production...will definitely pre-ordering the album smile.gif

Posted by: Liаm Sep 6 2016, 06:39 PM

It is very Carly Rae/Dua Lipa, a good direction for her! It's current but it doesn't feel too forced or too much of a departure <3

Posted by: Regina Sep 6 2016, 06:41 PM

I miss Rock Mel but this is still good.

Posted by: Jonjo Sep 6 2016, 06:52 PM

Lahhhhv itttt. Gaga's wig is not safe *.*

It reminds me of Poli's 'If Love Was A Crime'! Just more synthier.

Posted by: vibe Sep 6 2016, 09:04 PM

This is such a great song !!!

I hope the album does have a goin down / beautiful intentions track in it !

Posted by: ___∆___ Sep 6 2016, 11:25 PM

Another solid pop song from Melanie - The reaction to the song on social media seems to be positive too. Really hope she has a successful era.

On another note is always wondered how Mel continues to self release - it's not like she is constantly touring and generates lots of revenue that way, she has not had a sizable hit album since self releasing (Although has had some big hit singles in Europe).

Posted by: ___∆___ Sep 6 2016, 11:33 PM

Getting that iTunes relevance!! heart.gif

Posted by: vibe Sep 7 2016, 12:29 PM

She is loaded she was a spice girl !!
They wrote their own tracks , toured the globe three times.

Plus she has never spent her money on cars and mansions or got married / divorced .

Posted by: pippa Sep 7 2016, 01:07 PM

Mel's first album and and that era of singles were huge. Follow up albums were not as successful in the UK but she has has had good success in Europe. I would think money from all of this and the millions she would have made from the Spice Girls is more than enough to fund her albums. I have no doubt she has other sources of income such as public appearances and possible property investments. I would doubt she has any financial worries as she appears to have always been very sensible with her fortune.

On a music note, good to see her make the top 100 itunes, she deserves so much more as yet she has released extremely solid material that is worthy of doing much better, i hope her album can at least crack the top 40.

Posted by: Inna Selez Sep 7 2016, 04:46 PM

"Anymore" track is dope. I still think she is most talented from "Spice girls". One thing she could be more popular now if she signed with any big music label. But maybe Mel C wants to be more free in music and time on her own label.

Posted by: pippa Sep 8 2016, 01:06 PM

I doubt many big labels would sign based on the success she has achieved outside her debut. I too agree she is by far the most talented Spice Girl and i wish she could have a far bigger solo career.

I believe she should join the Spice Girls for the reunion and use it as a platform to promote her own material as part of the deal.

Aware of all of the above but essentially her 'Red Girl' label is a business venture that is designed to make money. She always spends on videos, promo and in the early day released multiple physical formats for seemingly little return - Just wondered if she runs it as a continuous loss making business as an album spending 1 week in the charts at #53 and no hit single I doubt generates a lot of income.

Posted by: slowdown73 Sep 9 2016, 03:53 AM

Love the new single anymore. Great tune. I also really liked her last album, the sea.

Posted by: vibe Sep 10 2016, 01:00 PM

She is holding listening party's which features a 40 minute live set on the 10th and 11th of October.

I'm going on the 10th - u can buy tickets at underthebridge.com

Posted by: pippa Sep 12 2016, 01:16 PM

Some tv promotion would help her immensely, i would hope she has some lined up.

Posted by: Juranamo Sep 13 2016, 08:51 AM

Wow, 'Anymore' sounds like a big hit! So good. 😍 Shame Radio 1 and Capital won't touch it with a barge pole. 😰

'Anymore' 8 track remix EP now available to pre-order and is released on September 23rd. Glad this is being 'properly' pushed as a single - I'm sure Mel will have some promo for the single and album lined up too.

Posted by: Voodoo Oct 1 2016, 02:43 PM

A limited-edition CD single is now available to pre-order from Melanie's official website. It is released on the same day as the album (October 21st).

Tracklist:

1. Anymore
2. Anymore (Seamus Haji remix)
3. Anymore (At Night HiFi remix)
4. Anymore (Full Intention dub mix)

In other news, Anymore has been A-listed by Radio 2! w00t.gif

So... how is the album, guys? happy.gif

I'm loving this album. Melanie's vocals and lyrics on this album are phenomenal. And not to mention the immense production! My top 5 songs would be Dear Life, Unraveling, Escalator, Room for Love and Loving You Better. wub.gif

Posted by: vibe Oct 22 2016, 05:20 PM

I'm really enjoying the album.

It's not full of uptempo pop tracks !! But is so sophisticated and great lyrically.

My fav tracks are dear life , escalator and our history .

Posted by: vibe Oct 22 2016, 05:26 PM

Blame is also one of my faves

Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 24 2016, 03:10 PM

#11 in yesterday's mids so hope it can stay Top 20 and be her first to do so since 'Reason'.

Kind of wish she'd released a few weeks ago and snatched a Top 10 when any old randomer was making it.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 25 2016, 01:03 AM

I hope it stays top 20 but if it manages to do so it will be tight.

Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 28 2016, 04:15 PM

#25 nocheer.gif However the fact she's returned to the Top 40 after her last 3 albums failed to do so is an achievement. Just hope we don't have a 25-OUT chart run.

Posted by: pippa Oct 28 2016, 05:26 PM

I am disappointed it missed the top 20 but on reflection in comparison to her last albums it has done well, not only did it achieve a higher peak it more importantly has higher opening sales. This said, i am slightly dreading what her position will be like next week.

We've seen drops from the top 5 to nearly out the top 100 so I would like to think it be ok. However I'm sure the press will slate her!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Oct 29 2016, 09:25 PM

Top 20 would have been lovely but its good to see her back in the top 40,hopefully she can get a 2nd week in the top 75.

The album made a number 94 debut here in Ireland this week cry.gif but at least it charted if nothing else.

Posted by: ___∆___ Oct 29 2016, 11:06 PM

Have to say I'm pleased she has managed to increase sales too as well as just chatting higher, VOM sold almost double what Stages did in its first week.

10k might be a stretch, unless she gets to perform any future singles on TV (she didn't do this for Anymore).

Version of Me sold 4,084 in its first week, but in week 2 it's sold under 900 copies. 25-146 is its chart run, which is her steepest decline within the Top 200 to date, unfortunately. As ever for Melanie, it'll be an uphill struggle to try and revive it.

There's only so many times you can express this crushing and sorrowful disappointment before realising these 90s starts aren't going to be the same powerhouse force they were in 2016.

I listened to the album upon release week, it was alright in a "potential BJSC entries, which never come to fruition due to something better/stronger appearing" sort of way, but on the whole quite weak. sad.gif 'Anymore' was by far the strongest song on there.

Gutted at 'The Sea' going 45-101-OUT. That album deserved more. sad.gif

MELANIE C UNTERSCHREIBT BEI 313 MUSIC
ALBUM RELEASE IM FEBRUAR 2017 BEI RCA DEUTSCHLAND/SONY MUSIC

Melanie C is back!

In ihrer Solokarriere, die 1999 mit dem Album „Northern Star“ seinen Anfang nahm, landete Melanie C mit „Never Be The Same Again“ und „I Turn To You“ in Großbritannien, mit „First Day Of My Life“ in Deutschland & der Schweiz und mit „I Turn To You“ in Österreich zahlreiche Nummer-Eins-Hits. Sechs ihrer Singles erreichten die Top Ten der UK Charts, ihre Solo-Tonträger verkauften sich weltweit über 12 Millionen Mal, in Deutschland erhielt sie insgesamt 5 Gold- und 2 Platin-Awards.

Das neue Album „Version Of Me“ von Melanie C inkl. der Single „Dear Life“ erscheint im Februar 2017 als Standard-CD, Deluxe-Digipak und Download.

Can't believe it's as low as £2.99 - Shame she didn't reduce the iTunes version for a week too, also it would help if she had a tiny bit of support for 'Dear Life'.

I think she is playing where she is wanted, let's face it to the general public she's not a crowd puller any more and hasn't had a significant hit album or single in years. It's not like she's fending off invitations to festivals and Jingle Bell ball.

Mel appeared on a chat show here in Ireland last night, doing an interview and performed hold on with Alex Francis, it was acoustic but it was a lovely performance, i really hoped it would be in the iTunes top 100 here today but no sign of it, fingers crossed it will sell a few albums for her and she might re-enter the top 100 albums here as i would think it wouldnt take much sales to enter in the very low end of the chart.

When asked about the Spice Girls she didnt rule out them doing something together. She interviewed very well and got a great reception.

Her tour started in Glasgow yesterday, here's the set list:

Anymore
Escalator
Version of Me
Room For Love
Something For The Fire
Northern Star
Dear Life
Unravelling
Human [Rag'n'Bone Man cover]
Numb
Loving You Better
Never Be The same again
Our History
Blame
Say You'll Be There [Spice Girls]
Hold On
Think About It
I Turn To You

All 12 tracks from Version of Me, 4 of her older solo singles, a Spice Girls single & a cover of Human

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Apr 6 2017, 12:15 AM

She is really doing all the album songs which i can understand but i think she could drop one or two and replace them with other songs out of her singles.

Mel C is someone i think who needs to do a Greatest Hits, i know she has albums over different labels but a Greatest Hits would be lovely from her and a Greatest Hits tour is something id love from her with her solo material, i wudnt mind a Spice Girl song either. For Lets Go from her the Reason album is my favourite song by her from all her solo work but i doubt i will ever get to see her perform it. I always thought that should have beeen a single, Reason is still my favourite album by her.

She only really has two albums on a different label - the rest of her deals she did with Red Girl records were licensing deals, so I imagine that she has control over all her singles from Next Best Superstar and forwards. The singles from her Virgin years shouldn't be too hard to license either I would think...

Because the new album is quite mellow and chilled and she played every track from it , as a gig I definitely missed the rockier songs that didn't feature .

This came out a year ago! ohmy.gif

A year on, what do you all think of 'Version of Me'? What are your favourite tracks? Are you happy with the singles run or not?

Posted by: Spiceboy Oct 22 2017, 11:11 PM

A year on the album has gone down in my estimations tbh. I love Melanie but I feel like the album is a bit of a chore to get through it's a bit ploddy. Some great moments and most tracks are good on their own but I get a bit bored after listening to half of it in one go. When it first came out I had it down as her 3rd best album but now I'd probably say it's my least favourite after Stages (although I don't think it is her weakest album as I do think the tracks are all strong on their own).

1. Northern Star
2. The Sea
3. Beautiful Intentions
4. This Time
5. Reason
6. Version Of Me
7. Stages

Posted by: sammy01 Oct 23 2017, 08:51 AM

I've always said as with the last 2 albums (I discount Stages exists) that her albums are 3 or 4 good tracks and then the rest is woe is me MOR shit. I could make a great 12 track album from TT, TS and VOM.

The positive from VOM is the production is better and more interesting, which is good but it just proves the songwriting and subject matter are the problems.

Posted by: vibe Oct 23 2017, 09:37 AM

Version Of Me is not her best work but it is still a solid album! I think after we heard Numb and Anymore we were all very excited bout the rest of the album . Melanie kept referring to it as her most electronic album so I was hoping for more upbeat material .

I think it's a shame Numb wasn't pushed more .

Anymore , Numb & Blame are my fav tracks .

I really hope we get to here Peter Vetesse production for Blame one day !!

Posted by: vibe Oct 23 2017, 09:40 AM

Oh and Hold On was a big mistake ! The only Melanie single that doesn't grip
me whatsoever . To think she spent money on this video ! This and Better Alone - worst single choices of her career when you compare to material that could have been chosen !

I actually think hold on was a great choice and if it had been with Matt Cardle or James Walsh or someone who is actually a name out there (James Bay, James Arthur, Niall Horan, Chris Martin etc) it would have done a lot better as she would have had more opportunities to promote it which she simply doesn’t get on her own.

But it’s still my least fav album by her (not including stages).

Posted by: Pearll Oct 22 2020, 09:20 PM

It was an okay album for me.

Room For Love is one of the best songs in her discography. I have never stopped playing that song.

Posted by: Sideout Oct 22 2020, 09:30 PM

Version of Me worse than This Time? This Time is the queen of MOR.

Version of Me and Melanie C are not too different in sound. Melanie C has more stand out bangers than VOM.

Posted by: Pearll Oct 22 2020, 09:41 PM

This Time has to be my least favourite album of hers.

It's just painfully boring.

Posted by: Spiceboy Oct 22 2020, 10:35 PM

I had This Time on in the car today and it has some gorgeous songs. I forgot how much I love What if I stay it's so simple but gorgeous... my husband was in the car and he was like "this song is very relaxing it's nice!" (poor guy I'm always dragging him to Melanie C shows etc etc lol).

Posted by: Mr.X Jan 28 2021, 07:06 PM

I just listened to this album and whilst some songs really stand out and continue to be lovely, I had to skip more than a few tracks this time (buy this time) sleep.gif

It's a very strange album. I quite liked it at first and you can see there is some progression in sound from the previous one, but overall it is very uneven and a bit meh...

The good:

- Loving You Better - still the best song in the album for me, it is classy as hell...
- Numb - actually quite cute and relistening did bring me joy!
- Room for Love - it's a good song, nothing amazing but it is a nice addition to her catalogue
- Anymore - the beat is great and the verses are cool too. The only thing that makes it Good rather than Great is the lyrics in the chorus. They sound so insincere....
- Version of Me - it is a good song indeed, just a bit grating otherwise it would be a Great song lol

The meh:

- Dear Life - that lyrical content is bad, jesus... why would you actually include the line 'Don't know if I believe in a God, Don't know if I believe there's not' ohmy.gif it's so clunky for the sake of a rhyme, it sounds like she is a 12 year old writing a song... I cant actually believe it was a single....
- Escalator - it is fine, nothing major... certainly feels dated as hell
- Our History - it's alright... a bit grating as well and a bit forgetful, but it passes...

The straight up bad:
- Something for the Fire - I hate it. Burn it all the way to hell! Probably the worst song she has ever done.
- Unravelling - I had to turn it off.

I think overall it is clearly an in-between album, where she was moving towards more electronic sounds and moving away a bit from her previous records' style of pop, but she never quite moves away from that at least here. It has good moments, but overall it is not a pleasurable experience to endure lol

The highs are good tracks, but the lows and the mehs are bit toooooo grating to be enjoyable..

GLAD SHE MOVED ON!!

VOM was a big step forward in production but man is it a deary slog lyric and subject wise.

Melanie C kept that production improvement but finally added some more interesting and positive lyrics and subject matter. This Time, The Sea and VOM were just such a downer to wade through thematically.

Dear Life is legitimately a highlight of this album for me. The lyrics are fine imo! They make the theme clear... the entire song is made up of a whole lot of contradictions and uncertainty about life in general, so the opening line sets the tone well, with her placing herself as not being sure about the existence of God but not ruling it out either.

I get the sentiment of it, and can relate but the clunkyness of the lyrics and the rhyms are just a bit too on the nose for me. It is usually my main blink.gif about Melanie's writing to be honest... Her lyrics often feel very under cooked unsure.gif

That particular line always bothered me cos the grammar of it is twisted and unfinished and it feels like it was written like that just to rhyme. I get it, just doesnt sound good to me at all...

But maybe it just isnt my style eh

remember when she was raving on TV about how proud she was of her 'concubine' lyric and then we heard it and it was so bad laugh.gif

Version of me is a bit of a weird one for me. The only song I outright dislike is Out History which I've never liked. Every other song I either like or love, yet as a whole album I'm not massively keen on it and I don't know why? I think there needs to be some more upbeat songs on it possibly.

Ps Mr X we have the same favourite song on the album Loving you better totally thought it was going to be a single I was a bit wtf at Dear life.

She certainly has some absolute clunkers when it comes to lyrics. She could do with sometimes inferring or using metaphors than just stating things outright.

One of my favourite things when I get a new Tori Amos album is figuring out the meaning to songs. Sometimes I have to look up books, films, volcano goddesses or serial killers to get references or metaphors. Mel C just smashes you over the head with the meaning of a song most the time.

Like most pop artists do. Tori is / has become left-field. Why are you even comparing her to a Spice Girl?

Call me basic by all means(!) but I appreciate lyrics that are reasonably straight forward and possibly relatable for being clearly conveyed. I don’t think it’s a bad aspect of writing.

Melanie C is clearly no Taylor Swift when it comes to the art of story telling and imagery in songwriting, but hey, different artists cater in different ways. If everyone wrote songs in the way Sammy describes it would be a bit exhausting imo. I do believe Melanie’s songwriting is always authentic to how she feels & she wants to clearly let us know how she feels. I like that.

I wasnt disputing the simplicity of her lyrics and how effective they might be. Sure, I prefer more nuance and lyrical experimentation, but absolutely adore very straight forward story telling or inspirational lyrics too. Emma does those quite fairly often, ah, and so do artists such as Ariana Grande, Adele, Madonna, etc...

What we are debating is how clunky her lyrics are, and a lot of times borderline cliché-driven with their imagery. When you have lyrics that sound shoe-horned in to make a point or illustrate without any nuance, it can be quite grating after a while as it can come across as insincere... Her last album is also full of them, though it is accompanied by excellent production and music, so it is not as grating imo...

It doesn't have to be massively deep or exhausting. The biggest song of the past few years is Dance Monkey which is a one massive metaphor, clever but also very easily accessible.

It would just be nice if Melanie, especially with the freedom of her own label, had a few songs where you had to dig a little deeper or were more metaphorical not so straightforward. I think it would do wonders for her writing as I agree with Mr X her writing borderlines on juvenile sometimes in its basicness and forced rhythms.

Actually you touch on a very good point: with the backing of a record label and professional A&R she could develop quite a lot as an artist and work with other writers who could challenge her to step up her game in this department at the very least. Clearly she needs it..

Not saying that she cant do that on her own, but it isnt exactly happening is it?....

Anymore is mine 🥰

I went to the listening party back then and the songs sounded better live.
Overall the album is ok but in my opinion her voice is unlistenable in some songs.

Anymore and Blame are the highlights.

Loving you better is the best album track its so slick and 90's sounding I love it

6 years already! Anymore was such a strong song to launch the campaign wub.gif I have a soft spot for Dear Life even though it doesn't seem to be well liked in the fan base. Room for Love another strong single.

Anymore is such a song! Always thought loving you better was the missed single (not that it would have done anything).

This album was necessary for her to understand she needed a change. VOM is a small step forward. Probably the key to Melanie C the album. She tried but she didn’t dare. That’s why she did way better with the follow-up.

I actually really agree with this. I liked the album a lot upon its initial release too but I very rarely go back to it now Melanie C still sounds much fresher!

Some nice tracks but I never quite enjoyed this album. Anymore was the right lead single but the chorus makes me cringe, just doesnt sound convincing to me...

Dear Life is ok as an opener for the album but not a single, so obviously Mel released it lol..... Loving You Better was good and should have been the follow up singles rather than the awful Hold On.

Apart from those, I dont really like the rest of the songs anymore. I think at points her voice really grates on me. I'm glad she followed up with self-titled as that was a much better record and progression.

The fact that Melanie C was successful though, has a lot more to do with the post-Spice tour landscape where she had:

1) a lot more money to invest in a long-form campaign
2) her profile was much much more visible than before 2018
3) she did a lot more than just small gigs
4) she had multiple formats available for her album, whereas before she would do 1 or 2 at most

She basically played the game like every other act who releases now.

It also helps that she had 3 singles released prior to the album which were all highly featured on Radio 2 and she released in a much lower sales climate.

What will be really interesting is to see whether she can continue similar success with the next record, I think she could easily get another top 10 hopefully top 5 if she plays it right.

I hated that she used the Spice Girls name negatively to sell this record.

There was a lot that went on behind the scenes around this point Tbf and Melanie wasn’t speaking to any of the girls other than Victoria for a little while.

I don’t agree with that. She didn’t join that GEM disaster, but she did talk in a respectful way of the others. And thanks to that too, we’ve got the best tour ever a few years later!
