27TH DECEMBER

In a week in which most of the music industry were refusing to believe that anything but John Lennon would be the festive No 1 St Winifred's School Choir have turned up a chart surprise as "There's No-One Quite Like Grandma" becomes the Christmas No 1 for 1980 and a record equalling 24th No 1 of the calendar year drawing 1980 level with 1965. They sold 165,685 copies of their track last week to sprint over the 438,000 copies mark but it was far from a convincing victory!

Both new entries to the top 10 come this week from the man himself John Lennon. Some suggest that were not for the split in sales then "(Just Like) Starting Over" would easily have seen the year out at No 1 and in truth the three titles sold a cumulative 325,994 copies over the last week, "Starting Over" itself responsible for 164,385 as it slid to No 2 on a 11% sales increase and just 1,300 copies behind the Christmas No 1 despite leading the Christmas race until the final moment! However a fully re-issued "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" hurtles 45-4 this week selling 102,609 in the copies and was of course a No 4 hit for John & Yoko back in 1972 and so has at least matched that peak and may out do it yet with New Year still ahead of us.

Another re-issue comes in the form of Lennon's 1975 track "Imagine" which peaked at No 6 five years ago but perhaps with more poignant lyrics given recent events it may re-peak, it slams straight into the top 10 at No 9 ( 59,000) and brings to 10 in total the number of tracks to achieve this feat in 1980.

Adam & The Ants also make some headway jumping 10-7 and record a 67% sales increase to 65,377 which in some weeks this year would see them at No 1 but as its Christmas No 7 will have to suffice.

With the exception of St Winifred's and Adam & The Ants nothing else is climbing in the top 10 though as you might expect most go up sales wise. Jona Lewie up 11% to 126,048 and holds at No 3, Abba down 13% to 71,097, The police similarly drop 1 with sales down 6%,, to 58,160 Madness continue to fall 6-8 (61,139) sales up 4% and Stray Cats dip 9-10 (51,649) with a 32% sales hike.

As BMRB are taking a well earned rest next week there is no chart so we'll be back in a fortnight with the final chart of 1980.

1- THERE’S NO-ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA- St Winifred’s School Choir (165,685)
2- (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER- John Lennon (164,385)
3- STOP THE CAVALRY- Jona Lewie (126,048)
4- HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER)- John Lennon & Yoko Ono (102,609)
5- SUPER TROUPER- Abba (71,097)
6- DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA- The Police (69,160)
7- ANTMUSIC- Adam & The Ants (65,377)
8- EMBARRASSMENT- Madness (61,139)
9- IMAGINE- John Lennon (59,000)
10- RUNAWAY BOYS- Stray Cats (51,649)

On the one hand St Winifreds feels like a 'fluke' #1 of sorts as I'd guess that the John Lennon track must have been in shorter supply as they obviously won't have been expecting to press lots more copies when it was previously on the way down.

But on the other hand I guess under normal circumstances it would have actually had a longer run at #1

Do we know the actual sales figures etc for the next chart Gezza? Didn't they just used to be rolled over back in those days with everyone defaulting to the same position?

The Christmas #1 incredibly close to going to John Lennon then! Obviously avoiding spoilers, but for those already aware of the songs which went to #1 after this - and indeed what would have been #1 the following week by many accounts if a new chart had been compiled - another 1,500 sales could have made for an extraordinary sequence at the top.

No sorry. The W/E 3/1- no data was collected so those sales would have just have been lost (Sales week 22-27 Dec).

Sales for 29 Dec- 3rd January were recorded though (W/E 10 Jan 81)- but i don't have actual figures for the week- only the monthly tallies.

Love 'Antmusic' wub.gif it's a shame the music video for it is so low quality on YouTube. There was a Record Store Day release of 'Kings of the Wild Frontier'/'Antmusic' as a gold 7" single so I do have that artwork somewhere in my collection, as they kept it faithful to the originals. My favourite single by them won't arrive until the next era but I do think Kings of the Wild Frontier is a much stronger body of work as an album - very much enjoying that era slowly unfolding here.

'There's No One Quite Like Grandma' is nails on a chalkboard so a shame Lennon didn't quite stop that, can't imagine how shocking that news must've been at the time.

I already had Imagine and Happy Xmas having paid full-price for them Xmas 1972 (Happy Xmas) and sometime in 1977 (Imagine) or I would have contributed more sales as soon as deliveries caught up with demand. These would all have been unexpected extra pressings at record plants. The missing week would have been Happy Xmas War Is Over on top, I would like to have thought, due to radio play and a host of Beatles/Lennon stuff on TV over Xmas before Imagine took over post-christmas.

Antmusic was Adam's best record till the new stuff in 1981, but his back catalogue was about to be hammered as he becomes the new kiddies fave pop star of the time - no question he was beloved of pre-teens and early teens in particular. I know cos I was getting work experience volunteering at a Youth Club in Mansfield, and on disco nights it was 1. Adam 2. Shaky 3. Bucks Fizz 4. Birdie Song in 1981. ohmy.gif I hid behind the sweet counter when one of them came on so I wouldnt be dragged on the dancefloor by some kid or other. Spoilsport!

Its funny the Antmusic lyrics implying it's a fresh new style of music replacing music that has 'lost its taste' but at the same time musically it is actually imo very retro, 70s glam rock and late 50s rock and roll inspired!

To Cut A Long Story Short is a very good electronic dancefloor new wave track which there hasn't been in the top 10 of 1980 really since Blondie's 'Atomic'.

Some Adam and the Ants style drumming in it too midway through.
Yeah both Spandau and UB40 became more MOR by 1983.

Another example of the record companies wanting sales and stifling innovation by the middle of the decade!

It's a shame Happy Xmas (War Is Over) never got to have it's week at #1 formally recorded. It's a good Christmas tune.

Exactly ^^^^^

'Happy Christmas (War is Over)' is just phenomenal. Very unique sounding, great structured song and heartfelt message. I'm finding the moden Spotify playlist of encouraging Christmas music which puts generic lyrics about snow, Santa, presents over a few sleighbells tiresome compared with something as classic as this. Def in my top 3 Christmas songs ever.

Agree with this sentiment completely. Most of my Christmas faves (John & Yoko and Jona Lewie both included among them from this thread) are actually the ones that are pretty much not actually about Christmas. Unfortunately the masters behind the streaming playlists that dictate so much of the annual passive listening do not feel the same.

It’s basically biased towards American artists most Brits had never heard much of until Spotify rambed them down our throats from 2014 onwards! And let’s face it the Brits do Christmas best when it comes to music!

Wow, very close! I’m tempted to suggest that if Imagine hadn’t been re-released at this point, Starting Over would have held on

I think it's a very safe bet that had Imagine not been available, enough of those sales would have moved to Starting Over as an available Lennon product to make up the 1k difference.

Its also a safe bet that if Clive Dunn - Grandad hadn't been such a big #1 hit in 1971 then the song St Winifred's - Grandma might have not have existed.
