It looks like this is now being released before 'The Fall Off' and is out a week on Friday. I'm so excited for this. 'The Climb Back' & 'Lion King On Ice' have aged like fine wine and if they are an indication of the quality of the rest than this has won album of the year already.

I'm not quite sure why an interlude that contains about a minute of him actually rapping is already doing so much better from his last 2 singles but it is fire. #8 on Spotify today.

"Christ went to heaven aged 33 and so did Pimp C and so did Nipsey"

I presume there's just more hype because this time there's a confirmed album coming very soon - that and the stream impact isn't split between two songs, plus this is shorter which is always good for streams (if there's people out there putting an interlude on loop lol).

A bold move to just drop a literal interlude as the lead single but I guess it's paying off anyway laugh.gif I didn't particularly like any of the small handful of songs he dropped in 2020 unfortunately, hope there will be some stuff I can get on board with more this era.

I had this on while I was working before and it was sounding incredibly hard. I can't wait to listen to it properly tomorrow when I can fully take it in. '1 0 0 mil' was the one that managed to stand out on first listen.

Shocked to see The Climb Back (or 't h e . c l i m b . b a c k') on the album as I thought that was supposed to the on the still rumoured to be released The Fall Off.

Yeah, 2nd listen and I'm already ready to crown this AOTY. Cole really is the GOAT.

Spotify Day 1:

2. a m a r i

I'm not sure why 95 south appears twice. It would be at 2 if combined. Can't see this holding up well because it's not the most commercial but hopefully he can nab a couple of top 10's officially

Lyrically it is really strong I just find the production and the flow to be very solar throughout and there's nothing exciting there for me personally.
A shame as he is such a good songwriter!

I think he is destined to be very US centric superstar, even more than Kendrick.

The problem with rappers internationally is that all countries have their own style and trends in rap which automatically causes that even the biggest US stars decline faster from international perspective (or don't ever make it big in the first place outside the enthusiasts)

The lyrics are so corny. He's literally just mumbling over generic trap beats

? It's about as far away as you can get from mumbling in rap

It sounds like he's talking over beats and can't always make out what he's saying. If he used less auto-tune it would be better imo

Delighted that 'pride is the devil' is now the top track on Spotify. It's my favourite of the tracks we hadn't heard before. Ideally 'Amari' & '95 South' would fall out the top 3 allowed to chart but amari has an official video releasing today so that's going to stay at least.

'a m a r i' is one of my least favourite on the album but it's nice that at least one of the songs has a video now.

This is somehow still getting better and better with every listen. Punching The Clock is the only non-essential track for me and that's only because of the length.

Spotify Day 5

10. p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l (with Lil Baby)
11. m y . l i f e (with 21 Savage & Morray)
13. a m a r i
20. i n t e r l u d e
32. l e t . g o . m y . h a n d (with Bas & 6LACK)
36. 9 5 . s o u t h
45. a p p l y i n g . p r e s s u r e
47. 1 0 0 . m i l ' (with Bas)

54. t h e . c l i m b . b a c k
56. p u n c h i n ' . t h e . c l o c k
64. h u n g e r . o n . h i l l s i d e (with Bas)

The climb for '9 5 . s o u t h' makes me think that it is now finally combined.

This has turned out to be the at least partly the case - there's still a couple of songs I've not listened to yet (I'll get to them x) but from what I have heard so far there are 3 songs that are standing out, and they are... the exact 3 that ended up charting from the album in the release week, so I guess the UK public has taste laugh.gif 'm y . l i f e' is easily my fave atm (Cole & 21 Savage over a retro soul sample beat is a killer formula between this and 'a lot') but 'p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l' is already proving to be a grower and can see 'a m a r i' being one too.

The other songs I have checked out ('i n t e r l u d e', '9 5 . s o u t h' and the 3 Bas collabs) still haven't really made much of an impression though - they're not bad (definitely still an improvement over the 'Lewis Street' songs) but they just don't really keep my attention, '9 5 . s o u t h' in particular feels like a disappointment as I can tell it's trying to be hype / a banger but it just falls a little flat. Not surprised that its numbers died off pretty quickly in favour of other tracks.
