"Nightcrawler" is an American neo-noir crime thriller which was released in the USA last October. In my country, it made its official premiere over two months ago. The film won a Golden Globe nomination for "Best Actor in a Drama", four Bafta nominations such as "Original Screenplay", "Best Actor in a Leading Role", "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" and "Best Editing" and it also received an Oscar nomination for "Best Original Screenplay". Unfortunately,"Nightcrawler" did not win any of the above categories but it is undoubtedly one of the best films in recent years!
The protagonist of the film is the ruthless opportunist Lou Bloom who lives in Los Angeles. He carries out scams to make easy money. One night, he will find himself in front of a car accident and he will be influenced by a self-employed / night reporter who filmed the tragic event, to sell it later to local TV channels. So the next day, Lou Bloom buys a radio scanner and a camcorder and he begins to locate himself during the nights anywhere there is news. He will develop a professional relationship with a successful news director, which will be crucial for him. He will do anything to have the best shots of the hottest headlines. Screenwriter Dan Gilroy made his first directorial attempt and the result of his work was extremely good! "Nightcrawler" was well written and it had very clever dialogues, interesting development, elaborate editing and remarkable soundtrack by James Newton Howard. Jake Gyllenhaal was brilliant in his role and I wonder why he wasn’t one of the five actors who were nominated in the category for "Best Actor". Personally, I think it was the performance of last year and of course it was not based on some imitation like some other nominees, after all, "Nightcrawler" is an original inspiration. Equally good was Rene Russo, who plays the ambitious Nina Romina and she is perfectly convincing with her amazing interpretation. She was totally wronged by the American Film Academy, which preferred to choose Meryl Streep once again although the performance of the latter was a caricature. All of this tends to be very boring. "Nightcralwer" is a story that shows how the voracious TV channels work behind the cameras and can reach the most viewers so they can have the highest viewership. It is one of the few movies I've watched so carefully with my friends and our interest remained undiminished throughout the duration.
"Nightcrawler" received rave reviews worldwide and it won several awards from various American Film Associations. It's a very apt story which is seen pleasantly and directly passes the messages that it wants to convey to the viewers. Its low budget was not an obstacle for the box office success although it could have done even greater numbers based on the value of its content. It has been loved by a large proportion of the audience and it has amassed a high average score in IMDB (7.9). "Nightcrawler" is a compelling film that should not be missed for anything!
