Chart Commentary

While the same three songs occupy my top three spots, numbers 1 and 2 have swapped places this week as Finnish popstar Isac Elliot climbs to the top spot. Mouth to Mouth becomes his first #1, almost exactly five years since his debut single New Way Home debuted at #4 in April 2013, peaking at #3 two weeks after. This is a contender for longest gap between an artist's debut and their first #1 in my chart so far. Whilst I don't have precise data, other contenders for the record could be Avicii, who made his chart debut at a similar time to Isac with I Could Be the One, and took until October 2017 to achieve his first #1 with Lonely Together; Kesha, who debuted with #2 hit Die Young in late 2012 and achieved her first #1 in July 2017 with Praying; and Katy Perry, who debuted in August 2012 with Wide Awake and scored her first #1 in February 2017 with Chained to the Rhythm.

This week's highest new entry comes from Charli XCX, who scores her highest chart entry since Doing It almost three years ago. Out of My Head is the first single from her mixtape Pop 2, and is her third chart hit in the past 12 months, following #30 hit Dirty Sexy Money and #9 hit Boys. Charli's had two #1s in the past - the first being Fancy with Iggy Azalea, then Doing It followed a year later alongside Rita Ora. Out of My Head features Tove Lo and ALMA, both of whom score their highest position to date. Tove's had three previous top 10s - Desire with Years & Years (#6), Talking Body (#7) and Cool Girl (#10). ALMA's previous highest was #13 hit Chasing Highs, so she's achieved a new peak.

The second new entry into this week's top 10 comes from British boyband The Shades, who leap a huge 16 places with Back to Your Place, which finally becomes their third top 10 hit in its fourth week on the chart. Both of their previous hits, 24 Hours a Day and Trouble, debuted at #4, while Back to Your Place had a much more muted debut at #22.

The Shades
2017 04 24 Hours a Day | 1 | 4-7-13-22-32-X (5 weeks)
2017 04 Trouble | 2 | 4-8-15-23-32-39-X (6 weeks)
2017 09 Back to Your Place | 3 | 9-... (1+ weeks)

As the Christmas songs drop out, we see a few tracks previously heading downwards begin to rebound. Rak-Su, Jax Jones and Camila Cabello all jump back up this week, the latter finally reaching a new peak and now overtaking her previous hit Havana (which nevertheless climbs a spot this week). We also see debuts from the latest singles from Dua Lipa and Katy Perry (although the status of the latter remains unclear).

Katie Gallows makes her chart debut this week, as does Ina Wroldsen as a lead artist - although she has two top 10s as a featured artist and one more as an uncredited vocalist on Calvin Harris and Disciples' How Deep Is Your Love. Anitta also makes her first appearance as a lead artist with Downtown, following a feature on Iggy Azalea's Switch, an #8 hit last year. Big Shaq reaches a new peak, as Man's Not Hot jumps 10 places to #20, while Not3s and Mabel both achieve a new personal best as My Lover jumps to #12.

Hello Joseph!
I like "Out Of My Head", although I wished it could be better, still it is a good song and it's great that it is your highest new entry!
Also I am so freaking happy that "IDGAF" debuted on your chart, I knew it would be a single and I hope it becomes a hit!
And that new Liam & Rita Ora collaboration for the Firty Shades Freed soundtrack... not that bad, I quite like it, still won't watch the movie though.
Great chart overall!
Hope you had a great start in the new year!
