I think this has been explained before, but these are all based on sales from 1994 onwards. It doesn't include what it had sold prior to then. Yes, it's at 1.03M including 1989 & 1990 sales. Every song before 1994 does not comprise of complete units when it gets a new certification. |

Aren't album totals sold prior to 1994 included for certification purposes? If so, why can BPI recognise pre 1994 album sales but not single sales? |

It’s the same for albums except for the ones that are included in the top selling albums of all time, like Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours or ABBA’s Gold. |

Has 'We Can't Be Friends' reached silver quicker than 'Yes, And'?
It feels like it has! |

Impressive for Olivia to get another platinum album. Bet the list of platinum albums released this decade is fairly short

Impressive for Olivia to get another platinum album. Bet the list of platinum albums released this decade is fairly short The release of the deluxe version was a good move from her & her team. It's top 5 in this weeks chart still with 8k+ sales. We'll likely see GUTS go 2x platinum & SOUR 3x platinum by the time she releases her 3rd album. |

One Moment In Time sold 327,590 copies in the 1980s bringing the total up to 727,590 chart units. That's a great figure for a #1 from 1988. Those sales are what i was there or there abouts expecting it to be but on the certification list it's gone gold in the last week which means 400,000. |

It's 400,000 since 1994. Sales before that are never included in these certifications.

If we know that it sold 327k prior to 1994 why can’t the OCC just use that data? Do they not have all of the figures pre 1994 or something?

Will this be the week that a certain someone acknowledges and understands that certifications are based on sales from 1994 and beyond, i.e. not including sales from pre-1994?

Not sure who you’re referring to but I don’t see the problem with people wanting to ask questions or clarify things.

Not sure who you’re referring to but I don’t see the problem with people wanting to ask questions or clarify things. There's no problem with that at all! I know I wasn't being clear about what I was referring to, but rest assured it wasn't about your post! A few of us have explained something a few times in recent weeks, which evidently hasn't been acknowledged by who we're trying to inform - which is becoming a bit frustrating. However I know that my post was flippant and vague, so I apologise for that. To answer your question from the other day: Official Charts Company have compiled the charts since February 1994 and their sales database started from scratch at that point - I guess they wanted the data to purely be their own. So previous sales are disregarded for certifications by BPI, who go off the OCC's data. I guess it's a case of "that's just the way it is", regarding why they don't take into account sales data prior to then, for certifications. I suppose drawing sales from more than one database is complicated. I'm sure other posters may have a deeper insight into why this is. |
