Self-titled lead single coming on Friday!! Ahhhhhhhh
HYPE!
Even in a competitive week Ariana would sell decently but in a chart which is quite stale at the top end and with many songs heading to ACR too I’m already thinking #1 debut with ease! Longevity depending on the song itself.
Coming for two years in a row with two UK #1 singles to her name!
The insider on ATRL who seems to have got things right so far said that 2 music videos have already been filmed, so hopefully a video drop straight away!
Hoping for a sensual bop with that title
Hoping for a Dangerous Woman pt II
Can't shake the feeling that I might be disappointed by this project but I hope not.
Ariana lead singles rank ahead of this coming out:
01. no tears left to cry
02. Dangerous Woman
03. thank u, next
04. Problem
05. The Way
Looking forward to seeing where this will slot in!
Think I'm going to go with:
01. no tears left to cry
02. thank u, next
03. Dangerous Woman
04. Problem
05. The Way
Cannot wait to here this, I'm expecting sexy R&B vibes for sure.
01. no tears left to cry
02. Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea)
03. thank u, next
04. The Way (feat. Mac Miller)
05. Dangerous Woman
01. no tears left to cry
02. Problem
03. Dangerous Woman
04. thank u, next
05. The Way
I guess I'll jump on the bandwagon
01. no tears left to cry
02. thank u, next
03. Dangerous Woman
04. The Way
05. Problem
Problem has aged so badly :x
01. no tears left to cry
02. Dangerous Woman
03. thank u, next
04. Problem
05. The Way
The Way acc sounds fresher to me lol
1. no tears left to cry
2. thank u, next
3. The Way
4. Dangerous Woman
5. Problem
Tbh there’s no great deal between 3-4 more mood depending.
The Way does sound really fresh though and I probably would listen to that more on its own than I would Dangerous Woman.
Problems sound is very of it’s era though.
ooh girl I am EXCITEDDDDD
1. Problem
2. no tears left to cry
3. The Way
4. Dangerous Woman
5. thank u, next
1. No Tears Left to Cry
2. Problem
3. Dangerous Woman
4. Thank U, Next
5. The Way
I refuse to use that hideous lowercase titling.
1. no tears left to cry
2. thank u, next
3. Problem
4. Dangerous Woman
5. The Way
I them all though!
Hope the new lead lives up to the excitement because were in need of a really good #1 right now!
Keep an eye out on this instagram account - https://www.instagram.com/positions/ (followed by Republic Records)
2 days!!
Great news about the video! I have high hopes!
I LOVE the artwork. Notice how it only says 'Ariana' too, that's pretty iconic! I remember her saying that one day she hopes she could just be known as 'Ariana'.
EXCITING!
I don't know what to expect!
The way I went from "love her keeping her name out there on these collabs and Rain On Me bangs, but she CAN'T release anything solo until March 2021 at the earliest" to "OMG SHE HAS A NEW SINGLE OUT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS!!!! SLAY" is legendary things.
I'm too excited now.
That artwork looks amazing!!!
I just hope it's more pop and less RnB, I wasn't really sold on the singles of her last era and the throwaways that followed.
The main thing I noticed about the artwork is that it’s not upside down this time around!
Maybe the album cover will be similar to this (hopefully a full face picture).
I wonder if we’ll see the album cover on Friday actually. I take it this picture is just for the single.
I am so HYPED
There’s an image on Twitter what keeps being shared as “the album cover” but until she announces herself it I won’t react to it.
The image itself is gorgeous. Facial image black and white and not upside down! Her name is also not on the cover again (if that is the cover).
Yeah I've seen this alleged cover as well but won't believe anything until I see Ariana posting it! I remember an awful rumoured cover for 'Yours Truly' originally
Serving on the single cover
Produced by London On Da Track and Tommy Brown.
Consider me floored, that snippet sounds GORGEOUS.
Reserving some judgement but I hope it's not just a cute 'typical' Ari song.
I mean I love 99% of her singles but I was hoping she was bouncing back with something a bit different this era.
Can't wait to wake up to this tomorrow
The music video dropping alongside the song is confirmed as the YouTube premiere says 'official video' <3
The Weeknd is also dropping a video tonight (or tomorrow depending on time difference).
What a day.
So happy it’s a video release too. I don’t know if I can quite handle the song and video together on my first listen so I might listen to the audio first then treat myself to the video later on in the day. I’m ready for this though!! And so excited as well.
I admire your patience, I don't think I'd be able to resist watching the music video as soon as I can going to re-listen to all of her previous singles tonight first
It looks like we have another lower-case era on our hands btw so I've changed the thread title accordingly
Tre artwork is amazing so like mariah's honey era
A MV too We're really being treated!
I have no idea what to expect from the video.
Happy 'positions' day Well... part 1, of course can say the exact same for the album next week too. Forum description now updated for AG6 I've been an Ari mod for almost a year and a half now and this is the first time I get to experience the start of a new era as one *.*
Need to go to bed now but I can't wait to wake up to the music video and read everyone's initial reactions!
EEEEP TODAY
Okay I need to stay up for this
this is good on first listen! Def feel like it'll grow pretty quick
She is BACK
Tbh it’s very chill, slick R&B and I can’t see it being an Ari fave on here but I was loving it by the end, it’s catchy as f*** and has a lot of replay value.
It’s very of the moment too, idk if it’ll stand the test of time like her pop songs (it’s deffo not in the league of Into You, No Tears, God etc that are timeless career definers) But who cares it’s an absolute BOP and I was wanting to dance during the last chorus. It’s gonna be HUGE
CD available for £2.99 on her UK store, we’re getting a physical album next week folks Ariana said imma keep CD’s alive singlehandedly! Ordered mine, hopefully it ships before I die x
Ohhhhh yes, I’m loving this on first listen Breezy R&B, with an instantly catchy chorus... a winner!
She’s serving looks in the video *.*
I’ve also ordered the CD single
It’s good! I don’t think it’ll be as huge as 7 rings and thank u next though.
It an okay song don’t get me wrong.. but the output from Justin, Ariana & Demi has all dropped in quality.. I wonder why..
This was very disappointing on first listen. It has elements of God Is A Woman melodically but it doesn’t go anywhere. Where is the big final chorus? Other than the whistle note I didn’t hear any variety in sound. I’m so disappointed ☹️
Loving this on first listen. A lush chill bop!
I was a bit nervous after reading the comments in here but I’m really liking this! It feels like a natural progression from ‘thank u, next’. Sonically it’s not exactly in your face or anything, very chill, but that chorus melody is soooo catchy! Even if it took me a few listens to properly understand what she was saying yeah, really lush sound - those strings are gorgeous. I’m pleased with the video too, president Ari *.*
will buy one of the CD singles when I get out of bed hooray for them being on her U.K. store!
I was expecting this to be a huge pop single, but I love this. Agree it’s a natural progression from thank u, next and it’s what she excels at. Those smooth vocals and that chorus
Omg I’ve been reading reactions elsewhere and I cannot unhear Craig David comparisons
cute but disappointing
I wouldn’t say this was a progression at all tbh. It feels very more-of-the-same and I think she’s capable of doing much better.
I do love the video though.
Ok so I basically ignored everything I said I was gonna do and went straight to the video.
Baring in mind I didn’t like thank u, next the song at all on first listen I did like this on my first play. It’s catchy as hell, produced well. I like the video as well.
It is kinda like Craig David’s 7 days not just in the chorus but kinda similar production at the beginning as well.
It wouldn’t have sounded that out of place on the thank u, next album tbh not a drastic change in sound.
As for how I think it’ll do. A definite #1 next Friday. But Idk if it’s gonna be a huge multiple week #1. Maybes more break up with your gf kinda chart run but with the album out next week it could end up staying there for a second week.
This is ok, Ariana songs never really hit hard on the first day for me. It just feels so predictable for her, I was hoping for a much more mature, sexy R&B sound with a name like positions but it’s just another tu,n song
I wanted to like it and it’s nice but as I expected typical snore fest Ariana.
I wish she would come back with a different type era, you could put this on most albums and it would fit.
Like it but just doesn’t hit hard.
Ariana can make anything sound good and she sounds great on this. It isn't especially different from her recent output though and there were better album tracks on her last album. I want pop Ariana back!
AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this is my favourite song she's ever done!!!
Took me a few listens but I really really like this! So catchy
It’s nothing on No Tears Left To Cry
I have this on a loop, I'm actually floored.
I wasn't expecting something this good!!
I really like this on first listen! I don’t think it’s the sort of song that commands immediate attention or obsession but the chorus is definitely a strong hook. I expected something a little more creative from her as the first single so I’m a tad underwhelmed on that level but that’s just expectations talking, cos I think the song is good on the whole.
Straight to A-List on Radio 1, #1 on US iTunes, #6 on UK iTunes currently!
Song's not that great, but she looks stunning in the video.
Love it on first listen! Very Ariana and nothing groundbreaking but it's a catchy bop. Also the video *.*
People need to stop expecting her to come back with a big pop banger now, it's not going to happen That's why she gave you Rain On Me x
Some of y'all are too hard to please.
THERE I said it.
i was expecting a slow r&b jam from the comments in here - this is a good compromise, it’s still got a very pop chorus.
it’s nothing groundbreaking but i don’t think that was what she going for. i didn’t have any expectations but it doesn’t sound far from what i expected her to release. thematically, it’s a very similar lane to tu,n + while i personally enjoy it, i understand why other fans could be disappointed. i think they’ll be bopping soon enough but i do also think she’s only got one album of this sound left if she wants to stay at this level cause we won’t keep buying the same thing over + over.
First couple of listens, I liked it, but definitely underwhelmed. So we'll see what happens when I've moved away from the "underwhelmed" feeling. I'm still really excited for the album, the 3 singles from tu,n were all bottom half of that album for me (not that I hated them either!!)
The video is brilliant though.
So yeah, first couple of listens, good but underwhelming.
This doesn’t sound quite as instantly massive as her last few lead singles but it’s a step up from the songs she’s released in between.
I haven’t seen the video yet though. Still hyped for that.
It's..... fine?
I think her diction is quite poor on the song though its quite hard to make out what she's saying - being a Diana Vickers fan I can see past that though haha.
On my second proper listen of this the song itself sounded very good.
When I hear songs with the video when it’s like a simultaneous premiere sometimes I get too distracted on the visual itself and don’t pay the song itself attention. With this now I’ve heard it as a song on its own it’s good. It’s catchy, slick, she sounds great. This was definitely more instant for me than what thank u, next was on first day one.
This is a cute bop that continues to grow on each listen! I went in with low expectations for some reason so I'm glad she's beat them.
I do agree she will need to switch up the sound sooner rather than later though.
I'm gutted but I'm hardly replaying this...
I don't know if Little Mix are just stealing the limelight because it's such a punchy song but this seems so uninspiring.
It sounds like a 3rd/4th single from an album to me
I’m pretending Rain On Me is the lead
As much as I love this (and I do love it) I wish she'd release a pop single again or at least have poppier elements
It's what I feared we'd get tbh.
Catchy R&B, but not anything I'll remember or regularly come back to
#1 on U.K. iTunes!
The video was on 8 million+ the last time I checked also
As for Spotify figures for tomorrow what are we thinking for the UK?
The #1 today did 415k. So this should beat that with ease I’d imagine but I don’t know by how much.
Ariana hasn’t really been away long enough to call it comeback but I’d still say this has been hyped and it’s all over socials and heavy promotion I’d imagine too on streams.
Already #11 on Apple Music too!
So obsessed with this song. Haven’t stopped playing it since release. Her second best lead single after the flawless No Tears.
Not keen on this at all. It’s following on from the r&b sounds from her last album. All faceless, tuneless songs. Bring back the pop Ariana.
She's on autopilot again
Uhhh had it on repeat all day (along with Sweet Melody), it's SO sexy, her voice is so addictive and I get the Craig David - 7 Days vibe, which is probably one of the reasons I'm so obsessed is because 7 Days is one of my favourite songs of all time, I was a massive fan of Craig David when I was a kid.
I'm going to go as far to say it's the most I've enjoyed a single from her since 'no tears', yes I even put it above GIAW and breathin.
Really love the video for this. My favourite of hers for quite a while actually. Shame it's too late for it to appear in the rate
Getting not much more from this than it being "nice"
Surprisingly hasn't killed my excitement for the album though, but like I said earlier, I think that's down to the tracks that got released from tu,n all ended up being mid-bottom of the album for me, so we shall see!
But yeah. Not hating or even disliking this, it's just not got my attention much at all.
This is one of her blandest for me. I would lump this with a ‘Boyfriend’ type release where you are just left thinking, has she run out of ideas? It unfortunately just sounds like everything we have already had from her, just slightly less interesting.
Sounds like a good song on first listen. I am sure the odds have shortened for Ms Grande actually running for president in future!
I can actually see this being a quite an underperformance I wouldn’t be surprised to see this miss the top 3! The only thing that will help her is ACR for other songs!
Really? The top of the chart looks so stale right now so I think she's picked a good week to sail to the top! I don't really know much about Apple Music tbh, is her performance on there good so far? Very intrigued for the Spotify numbers.
She could have a battle with Luke Combs in the USA, hes #1 on Apple Music US and iTunes
The current number one in the UK didn’t even sell 40k copies last week!
I’d definitely imagine Ariana could surpass that in her debut week. I mean, anything can happen between now and Friday but I do feel like she should at least get a single week at #1 just because of how the top of the charts has had a real clear out the last two weeks.
This is at 5 on UK Apple Music.
Little Mix are at 41 and KSI 51.
So of the big new entries this week shes the highest by a long way on there.
She also may have YouTube in her favour this week too.
If she does actually get there it’ll be the first solo song to go there since Drakes Toosie slide and the first female solo song to go to #1 since Billie’s No Time To Die.
Is it streaming or is it rare now to get solo number ones these days like the number one always seems to be a duet / collab now!
Great start for this!
#1 Apple
#1 Spotify (541k)
I’m thinking that the streams could increase when the album drops!
here's how her previous singles did for comparison, it's her biggest opening since TUN album dropped
541k seems pretty solid to me. 7th UK #1 is coming!
The streams for the #1 on Spotify in general don't seem to be as high as they were a couple of years ago.
Gah, I'm honestly so bored of her music. This is her on total autopilot.
I'm still quite underwhelmed by this. It is frustrating seeing people online say "omgz this is her best song eva" because it's absolutely not, and she can do much better. It was pretty much what I was expecting from her though - I think the days of "big pop Ariana" are gone and tbf her voice really suits this style.
these last two eras (this one included based on 'positions' alone aka wishful thinking) have been her absolute best so far. she got away from pop 101 she used to do which made listening to her music infinitely more enjoyable.
#1 in the mids!
That's fantastic about time we had a female solo #1. It's a good song from her.
Hopefully it can maintain a strong lead! The only people I'd accept pulling ahead would be Little Mix at this point, but I don't see that happening.
1 Ariana Grande - positions (25.5k) *
2 KSI feat. Craig David & Digital Farm Animals - Really Love (13.8k) *
3 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (13.6k)
4 Headie One feat. AJ Tracey & Stormzy - Ain't It Different (11.3k - 46 ahead)
5 Tate McRae - you broke me first (11.3k)
Strong start
Nice lead!!
It is breaking my heart to see how horrible people are reacting to her midweek position.
Some people are just terrible.
I'm so happy to see this looking very safe to become her 7th #1.
It's still growing on my loads with every listen!
It keeps growing for me each time with each listen.
Behind the scenes of the 'positions' music video:
Happy to see that this is heading for #1 The reaction to it here has been pretty mixed, but I'm really loving it.
1 Ariana Grande - positions (31.4k) *
2 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (17.9k)
3 KSI feat. Craig David & Digital Farm Animals - Really Love (17.5k) *
4 Tate McRae - you broke me first (14.8k)
5 Headie One feat. AJ Tracey & Stormzy - Ain't It Different (14.5k)
Extends her lead at #1 a bit!
I like it, though I can't understand 85% of what she's saying.
1 Ariana Grande - positions (40.1k) *
2 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (23.8k)
3 KSI feat. Craig David & Digital Farm Animals - Really Love (22.4k) *
4 Wes Nelson & Hardy Caprio - See Nobody (19.2k)
5 Headie One feat. AJ Tracey & Stormzy - Ain't It Different (19.0k)
Her lead continues to grow! and next week it'll have help from the album being out so 2 weeks+ at #1 seems realistic.
Yay! So happy this is easily going to be #1. I wonder how many weeks it can manage overall
I am really liking this. It is Ariana by numbers and she is clearly staying in this lane she has crafted for herself for the long run going off the singles we've had in the past few years, but it works so I'm not too fussed. I'm vibing
Glad you're enjoying it so much Bal!
Today's midweeks:
1 Ariana Grande - positions (47.8k) *
2 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (29.8k)
3 KSI feat. Craig David & Digital Farm Animals - Really Love (26.8k) *
4 Wes Nelson & Hardy Caprio - See Nobody (23.8k)
5 Tate McRae - you broke me first (23.7k)
Still way out in front
Look what turned up this morning!
Also... chart day
Congratulations to Ariana for her 7th U.K. #1 single with this!
Other artists on the same tier as her, according to an OCC article in May: Elton John, George Michael, Jess Glynne, Justin Bieber, Kylie Minogue, McFly, Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, Sam Smith, Tinie Tempah & U2.
So in terms of solo females it’s literally just Madonna and Rihanna who’s had more #1s than Ariana!
Incredible! Btw this sold 60,909 to be #1 - a 20k+ lead over #2 *.*
Ouch at it dropping to #2 on Apple Music to Wes
She might still be ahead officially as she has two versions of the song now (but then again he also released an acoustic version today).
Just seen on iTunes that the single version has gone and it’s just the album version now.
Actually yeah that’s another version at 49 so it’s still way ahead.
I also received the CD single yesterday
A minor error - the catalog number printed on the spines is wrong (in fact it's the same catalog number as the European 'thank u, next' album CD). However the correct catalog number for positions is printed on the back cover, the inlay of the front cover, and the disc.
#1 in the U.S.! she extends her record of #1 debuts! First artist ever to score 3 debuts in the same year too.
Ari also the first female artist to achieve 3+ #1s in a calendar year since Katy and Rihanna 10 years ago. Remember when this year was supposed to be her year off?
On track for a 2nd week at #1 in the U.K. also.
Wow!!!
Ariana and those achievements she keeps on getting is just insane!
Incredible success So pleased for her!
Finding myself going back to the music video a lot I love the transitions!
Spends a second week at #1 in the UK today her third multi-week chart topper here after 'thank u, next' (6) and '7 rings' (4 - non-consecutive) now!
Well deserved! I still maintain it's one of my favourite songs she's ever done tbh. Love a solo female @ #1 too.
This is officially my favourite song by Ariana It's just so catchy
She should have worked more with London On Da Track on the album.
#1 in the First Look Chart and still topping Spotify/Apple so a third week at #1 looks likely *.*
I am getting more and more obsessed with this as time goes on. It's absolutely brilliant and painfully catchy for me now
This is track #1 on Now 107 *.* with ‘Rain On Me’ as track #7 also! Definitely going to get this one
Could this secure a 4th week?
Announced just now that 'positions' has spent a third week at #1 for Ariana - fantastic, congrats to her
1 BBC Radio 2 Allstars - Stop Crying Your Heart Out (20.4k) *
2 Ariana Grande - positions (15.8k)
3 Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am (15.6k) *
4 Little Mix - Sweet Melody (13.3k)
5 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (12.1k)
Small gap but she's overtaken Billie since the First Look Chart now!
Hope this can nab a 4th week at #1 ahead of the Radio 2 single.
It's looking good so far.
Fingers crossed! Would be her second longest consecutive run at #1 ever after 'thank, u next', now that is wild ('7 rings' had 4 weeks too but non-consecutively)
#2 in the U.S. this week, good to see it stable outside of album release week.
4 weeks at the top would be incredible, I certainly wasn't anticipating it to manage this! What a bop
1 Ariana Grande - positions (27.9k)
2 Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am (27.3k) *
3 BBC Radio 2 Allstars - Stop Crying Your Heart Out (23.9k) *
4 Little Mix - Sweet Melody (22.2k)
5 Internet Money & Gunna feat. Don Toliver & NAV - Lemonade (20.7k)
#1 in the mids now and still 600 copies ahead of 'Therefore I Am'! Billie's lead dropped to just 3k on Spotify today. #streampositions
(I am a fan of the Billie song too - would be an amazing top 3 if Little Mix are up there as well in the end)
An Ari, Billie & LM top 3?
yeah this is really hitting.
Flipped back over today - Ari now has a 6k lead over Billie on Spotify! Looking good for her #1 chances, as Billie not only needed a lead but a substantial one today.
I never got around to commenting in here for some reason so belatedly noting that this has rapidly become one of my favourite Ariana songs (definitely her 2nd best lead single for me, though that's not saying much as 'no tears left to cry' is untouchable and I'm not a big fan of any of her other leads lol), it's a shame that it's got a relatively lukewarm reception - one of her catchiest hooks and I love the breezy production as well. I had pretty low expectations from an R&B era Ariana as well so it's really a pleasant surprise that I've ended up being such a fan of this. Great that it's managed to be such a huge success anyway, wouldn't have called it potentially having 4 weeks at #1 based on its progress during the first week! (And at least holding up pretty solidly on the Hot 100 even if it was limited to just the one week at #1 there).
Spends a fourth week at #1!!!
5th week maybe?
Just realised that this is the longest running female #1 of 2020 as 'WAP' had 3 weeks at the top, yesss, she's killing it!
Just noticed that Billie is climbing quite a lot on iTunes!
Oh yeah Billie's song has been reduced to 59p hmm, c'mon Ari, keep widening the streaming gap!
I think it will get a 5th week
I'm so happy it's managed a month anyway!
This sounds better and better upon every listen.
This has gone down SO much better than I ever thought during release week. People were acting like her career was over.
Miley/Dua #5 on Spotify, Shawn/Justin #15 and Ariana now 33k ahead of Billie get that 5th week!
Coming for 9 weeks at #1
Imagine the meltdowns in the chart forum
'positions' has been moved up to the Radio 2 A-List this week, apparently only the 2nd time this year that a song has had C-B-A progression on there.
Looking at the data, a fifth week at the summit seems likely.
Yep she’s now 60k ahead of Billie on Spotify - ‘Mood’ now #2 on there but on ACR *.* amazing!
Monday mids:
1 Ariana Grande - positions (14.5k)
2 Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am (11.6k)
3 Little Mix - Sweet Melody (11.5k)
4 BTS - Life Goes On (11.1k) *
5 Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky (10.2k)
5th week at the top looking good *.*
'positions' leads the Now! That's What I Call Music 107 advert shame that the ads are so short these days but Ari and Little Mix really won here!
Literally my favourite songs from Q4. Well... the whole year bar 'Rain On Me'.
Spends a 5th week at #1 in the U.K. officially overtaking '7 rings' as her 2nd longest running #1!
I can't believe it's gotten a 5th week! Deserves it so much, it maintains being one of my favourites she's ever done.
I predicted 5 weeks in the other thread, but I think it stands a good chance at a 6th. Guess we will see.
Go Ari!
5 weeks is great. I still feel like 7 rings and thank u, next felt culturally bigger but this is smashing.
It also rose on sales this week (going 21-17).
This is almost guaranteed a sixth week at #1. Hopefully she discounts it on iTunes too
Yep this has had no discount so far and zero promo as well so it just goes to show how much of a streaming force she is - enough to have a 7k lead officially over #2 in week 5!! Here's to week 6 ahead of the major Christmas invasion I agree that this doesn't feel as culturally big as 'thank u, next' or '7 rings' but has connected really well with the general public nevertheless. '34+35' is the one with the memeability factor really, I think 'positions' spawned 'president Ariana' memes for a couple of weeks thanks to the video but that's about it.
The song refuses to age one bit. Insiders were calling it a "grower" before the song came out and I see why. 5 weeks in and it still sounds extremely fresh.
#1 in the First Look Chart today! Get that 6th week Ari
The only non-Christmas song in the U.K. Spotify top 10 right now
If Ariana does this I'll be VERY impressed. Little Mix and Mariah Carey are big threats this week. Personally I'd like to see LM have a quick run in the top spot before the years up, but it really is going to be a fight with this MONSTER hit hanging in there. Couldn't be prouder of her.
6th week incoming
I’m loving a long running number one and it’s a very good song despite being slightly underwhelmed at first!
Mariah is 900 copies behind in the mids - I guess we'll have to wait and see how big her 1st December streams are, how much they drop after that, plus how Ariana's numbers hold up. I finally bought this on iTunes today
Btw this continues to be stable in the U.S. too:
Midweek info has gone quiet but Mariah didn't even do double Ariana's numbers on Spotify for the 1st December boost, so hoping she'll still be okay for a 6th week! I did have a hunch all week that she'd do it, mainly due to ACR being such an obstacle, but you can never predict the figures - was shocked at that
Edit: not me posting that and then the mids being released a few minutes after
1 Ariana Grande - positions (24.4k)
2 Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You (22.6k)
3 Little Mix - Sweet Melody (21.1k)
4 Wham! - Last Christmas (20.1k)
5 Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky (19.6k)
I know people had their doubts as to Ariana returning with a new album so soon after ‘thank, u next’ due to what (for seemingly any other artist) would be a risk of over-saturation, but she really has proven that people generally don’t tire of her and her music.
I mean ‘positions’ spending what will almost certainly be a 6th week at the summit (albeit somewhat by default), ‘34+35’ climbing/promising to be a substantial follow-up hit, and ‘Santa Tell Me’ looking to re-peak in its 7th(?) year charting are all just signs that she is fully cementing herself as a future icon.
I imagine at some point we will see her return to her poppier roots as she changes and her career evolves. But for now I’m happy living in the R&B era with her as it’s clearly her best market for the moment, and she’s not about to go anywhere anytime soon. Her stardom reminds of me Rihanna in her peak, in the sense that anything she puts her name to will automatically take off; the key difference between the two of them however I think is that Ari seems to have honed in on a staple sound much quicker.
Come on Positions.
I know it's inevitable that AIWFCIY will eventually become a #1 but I really hope it can be delayed as long possible.
On a side note, I'm pleasantly surprised to see 34+35 rising in streams everywhere. The song has apparently gone viral on TikTok and Snapchat, a re-entry to the top 10 seems possible.
Spends a SIXTH week at #1!!
Incredible, her joint longest stay at #1 with 'thank u, next' + alongside 'Head & Heart' it's the most consecutive weeks spent at #1 in 2020
What a smash
She’s still doing more than Mariah on Spotify (with ACR taken into account), so I wonder if this can manage a 7th week?
I want her to achieve a 7th week so she can snatch that most consecutive weeks of the year stat for herself keep streaming everyone!
Glad that holding off on downloading it until this week was worth it might get the Now version as well for this next week
Positions is the new River
ARGH she's acknowledged it!! <3
Well this has risen to #4 in the mids now and back to doing more than Mariah on Spotify when ACR is factored in. So hopefully top 3 should be safe!
This has fallen to #3 behind Mariah and Wham! today so its time at the top finally comes to an end! What an amazing run it's had.
1-1-1-1-1-1-3 *.* mirrors the run of 'thank u, next' exactly so far! Would have to fall to #5 next week to continue that.
It's done fantastic!
This just gets better and better
It’s definitely going to age better than thank u, next
Yeah 8 weeks on and it's not getting old for me at all <3
So by this time 'thank u, next' had fallen to #5 and 'positions' has outdone that with merely a fall to #4 today the former rose to #2 the following week though so can't quite see that happening here
1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4 *.* such a good run, especially in the Christmas rush!
This being the highest non-Christmas song on streaming NINE weeks into its run and above a new Ed Sheeran song.
Smash!
1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-19
still the highest non-Christmas related song in the chart though! Should be going to ACR so a big fall was on the horizon anyway.
Yep we have confirmation that this has gone to ACR today so has taken a dive! Still #1 on Spotify and Apple though *.*
Also it's apparently projected to be back up to #2 in the U.S. after the Christmas clear-out! Absolutely loving the longevity for it.
I wonder what kind of numbers positions needs to pull this week to get reset. I guess the residual Christmas streams from the 25th will make it harder than last year. A reset would mean a rebound to the top considering it's #1 on Apple and Spotify atm.
This was booted out of the chart to #45 this week due to ACR and Christmas but will probably be back in the top 15 or something next week
1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-19-45 *_*
Still held pretty strong with ACR but for sure it won't be gone for too long.
Yep, straight back in today at #21 in the mids! Hopefully it can climb and secure another week in the top 20.
It's a shame this didn't get reset. It feels like it went to ACR too soon because of Christmas.
I think it will climb a bit more before Friday.
I know right I'm sure she could've racked up plenty more top 3 weeks - maybe even #1 again next week as Little Mix fans are really going to town this week for 'Sweet Melody'. Then again, the lack of 'positions' on SCR does free up a spot for '34+35' to place a bit higher
Meanwhile in the U.S. without ACR:
^ Oops that already hasn't aged well as I think this was #6 without ACR in the last mids, the Spotify and Apple #1s not enough to be higher right now it seems.
Anyway, sadly no top 20 re-entry this week but does climb back up to #22 - 10 weeks in the top 40 now
(certified gold now too as posted in the sales thread )
I didn't see the Christmas bounce back in the US that's amazing!
Top 30 these days is always respectable! Another certification in the bag!!
Wonder why the bpi website hasn't been updated in a while. I'm assuming because it's been holidays.
Yeah that bounce back really was impressive and it's just achieved ANOTHER week in the top 2
Spends an 11th week in the top 40.
1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-19-45-22-28
Other Ari songs with 11 weeks top 40: God is a woman + 7 rings.
Oh wow! That's fantastic! Where is the 34+35 remix looking likely to chart in the US?
Well that's fantastic!
Spends a 12th week in the UK top 40! Chart run update: 1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-19-45-22-28-33
Same amount of weeks at '34+35' and 'Break Free'!
Hangs on at #39 in the U.K. this week. That's its 13th which matches both '34+35' and 'Dangerous Woman'
Ooh it scraped another week in the chart at #40 - 14 weeks is equal with '34+35' and fellow number 1 'Problem'!
She sounds so good!
This just popped up on my YouTube and oh my GOD I am obsessed in love.
Loving this studio footage from her lately:
I am LOVING this SO MUCH, the woman is a MACHINE.
Finally we get the first performance of this smash!
I was really looking forward to this one after the studio footage of her vocal layering was such a joy to watch in the past. The acapella intro was a beautiful idea here!
Now we've seen them all... 'my hair' was my favourite <3
Okay but I can't get enough of this... I really want a Garage track from Ariana, it would suit her so well. Wait til that Chorus hits!!
Oh yeah I remember the strings of 'positions' initially being compared to Craig's music! That mash-up slaps *.*
I'm generally into Ari's dance collabs (especially the Cashmere Cat ones <3) so yes please at her jumping on a one-off garage collab, you can't really go wrong with it tbh
I can't believe where that year went, still reminds me of an amazing night, this and Sweet Melody being released on the same night, gonna be hard to beat that one. What a smash, still obsessed.
Oh yes what a week that was with 'Sweet Melody' too a year since 'positions' began its 6 week reign at #1 here now, taken from the weekly chart thread:

Interesting video about the writing of 'positions':
New behind-the-scenes photo from this music video :
This is going to be featured on a Now That's What I Call #1s compilation release to celebrate 70 years of the Official Singles chart!
Surprised they didn't go for something from the 'thank u, next' era but hooray for her having a place on there nevertheless.
'positions' turned 3 years old this week! I don't think there's ever been more than a 2 year gap between her lead singles until now.
The past 3 years have really been a roller coaster, the week this and Sweet Melody were released was so pivotal to where I am now... unreal. 3 years, wow.
