Hello and welcome to my 7th annual EOY chart! w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif

As 2019 is the end of the teens (I know it should really be 2020 but oh well), I will be doing a decade spanning EOD chart at some point but let's start by focusing on the past 12 months.

As always, let's take a trip down memory lane and begin with a rundown of last year's chart.

Last year's playlist:

10. AJ Tracey & Not3s - Butterflies

Does it hold up?: Yeah! AJ has went from strength to strength this year releasing his brilliant self-titled album in February and continuing the year with a frequent slew of bangers. However, I don't think he will ever come close to matching this. While people praised Ladbroke Grove as the song of the summer, this is the ultimate summer song for me with relaxed vibes that take you instantly to chilling on a beach.

More EOY threads finally!
Anyhow, Ladbroke Grove is the clear fave of his for me but Butterflies is easily second best. Hope we get more like those soon but they seem like one-offs amongst the rest of his material. Wasn't very keen on either of his most recent top 40 hits.

Unfortunately Butterflies was pretty much the epitome of bland UK urban/Afro-beats sadly, there's nothing wrong with the song (I get the relaxed vibes as you say) but it doesn't grab me at all. Thankfully AJ redeemed himself with Ladbroke Grove this year (at least for me).

I never really got into Ladbroke Grove as much as everybody else but it's still a decent tune. I've preferred practically all of his other top 40 hits.

I thought Butterflies sounded really unique amongst the UK hip-hop tracks really but to be fair Ladbroke Grove took that to another level. There hasn't been many garage hits at all this decade.

9. Lil Wayne ft Kendrick Lamar - Mona Lisa

Does it hold up?: This has only got better this year. While it might not be my favourite, I would potentially rank this as the best rap song I've ever heard. It's almost operatic. Knowing that Wayne is capable of brilliance like this really makes it worse when he does one of his lazy verses.

8. The Weeknd - Call Out My Name

Does it hold up?: This is a song I haven't really came back to much this year. This is not classic Weeknd by any stretch of the imagination but it still has a killer chorus and I still enjoy it when I hear it. However, I do still currently much prefer this one to his recent two efforts.

The whole MDM EP was a huge disappointment for me, no wonder they were all throwaways and not for a proper album. His two new singles are a lot better.
I don't recall Mona Lisa, think I only listened to that once. Not a big fan of Lil Wayne's anyway.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't say COMN is one of his most memorable hits.

I really loved Call Out My Name & Wasted Times but the other tracks weren't his finest.

Mona Lisa is amazing. I would highly recommend giving it another listen

7. Ariana Grande - God Is A Woman

Does it hold up?: Out of the Sweetener singles this is the one I come back to the least but that doesn't mean I don't still love it. Apart from the annoying Beavers, this is one of Ariana's very best videos and is one I very much enjoyed belting out at the tour. Let's all be grateful that the producers of the track didn't get their wish. They wanted this to be a rapper's single where Ariana sang the chorus. That would have completely ruined the message of the song.

6. Little Mix ft Nicki Minaj - Woman Like Me

Does it hold up?: Yeah, I still love this one. When it was first released I was a little underwhelmed (it went 4-10 in its first 2 weeks in my chart) but as soon as the video was released the song properly hit me. Everything Jade does in it is iconic! This really should have reached #1 in my charts but instead spent 3 weeks at 2 behind Thank U, Next.

5. Eminem - Killshot

Does it hold up?: While I haven't went back to this as much as most of the other songs in my top 10, the bars still sting every time I do listen to this. At the time I gave a lot of stick to MGK for Rap Devil's atrociousness but at least it wasn't as bad as Nick Cannon's latest efforts. Those 2 might be the worst diss tracks of all-time. It says a lot when some random tweeted comback from Eminem got more likes in 10 mins than Cannon's tracks have got since they've been released.

I would probably say Woman Like Me is my favourite out of those three but I've not really been back to visit any of them, Killshot especially felt like some very petty bickering really which I can't say I endorse!

4. Blackpink - Ddu-Du Ddu-Du

Does it hold up?: 100%. I've probably listened to it even more this year than last to be honest. This year I fully became a Blackpink stan and even went to see them on tour in Manchester. Although unfortunately, as it was a day off the 2 years anniversary of the Ariana incident, they changed a few aspects of their show, including not performing the studio version of this song, out of respect. I do hope they tour again in the UK so I can get another chance to hear this song live. This has become the first K-Pop video by a group to pass 1 billion views on YouTube (sorry BTS). They're also a huge contender to get this year's EOY #1 with the 9-week chart topping Kill This Love.

3. Ariana Grande - No Tears Left To Cry

Does it hold up?: Well yeah, this is still an absolute perfect piece of pop and sounds so epic and massive. However, I haven't went back to this one anywhere near as much as you'd imagine this year. While I obviously love it (7 weeks at #1 in my chart) I don't think I feel it's one of Ariana's best like seemingly everyone else does. It's been a bit overshadowed by her more recently releases for me.

2. Ariana Grande - Thank U, Next

Does it hold up?: Yeah, this song just gets better and better. Probably now Ariana's signature hit, this really feels like Ariana on top-form. It was also quite possibly my favourite song to hear live on tour. It was a really fun performance and it felt like the song everyone in the crowd was excited to hear so the atmosphere was electric. I'm so jealous of the people on this leg of the tour who have seen it performed with the Mean Girls christmas outfits on and with Elizabeth Gillies even turning up for the Atlanta show.
