England's first game of the Euro 2016 tournament is against the next World Cup hosts, Russia!

The game is live on ITV. Please use this thread for speculation, pre and post match chat on the England game.

Posted by: Mack 8th June 2016, 06:59 PM

This should be a win for England. I think it would be an 2-1 win to them although I wouldn't be surprised if they drew this game. Russia are no pushovers.

Posted by: Mack 9th June 2016, 06:27 PM

At least no-one has pulled out yet.......

Posted by: Mack 10th June 2016, 06:30 PM

Vardy has to start you have to feel.

Posted by: Mdh 10th June 2016, 06:34 PM

I hope so however I expect he will be a supersub for this game. Roy isn't that adventurous.

Posted by: Mack 10th June 2016, 06:36 PM

He'll probably will be a supersub for Roy. I would start Vardy a player who has had the season of his life.

Posted by: Dobbo 10th June 2016, 06:38 PM

I can't see him starting all of Kane, Vardy, Rooney & Alli unofrtunately so I feel Vardy will be the one ousted to the bench.

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 06:07 PM

England talk in here please!

Team for tonight: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose; Alli, Dier, Rooney; Sterling, Kane, Lallana.

First impression.. we need another actual midfielder playing. Midfield 3 of Dier, Ali and Rooney is poor defensively.

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 06:29 PM

STOP PLAYING ROONEY IN MIDFIELD. that is all. I've never rated that choice.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 06:55 PM

Hoping that the football will be remembered following the events of earlier in Marseille.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 07:08 PM

Good chance early on from Lallana. Still look very vulnerable defensively.

I get worried when England make lots of chances without scoring.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 07:24 PM

At least we are creating chances trouble is we can't find the back of the net or have a decent shot at goal. Has Rooney done anything in this game?

Few good balls, but he doesn't suit the team if we're playing a pressing game. Henderson/Milner would be much better suited.

Playing well so far, but very wasteful in front of goal.

Posted by: Iz~ 11th June 2016, 07:39 PM

I see I've missed very little so far then. Looked decent enough earlier but with very little coming of any of the chances I managed to see.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 11th June 2016, 07:48 PM

Good first half, hope we score soon though!

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 07:48 PM

Come on ENGLAND, so many chances and they simply can't find the net, specsavers is just round the corner. And Rooney is just THERE, he looks like he has eaten too many pork pies. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 07:50 PM

In terms of attacking, this is one of the best performances by our standards in years. So creative and our cross field and overlap play has been fantastic at points. However - bring Rooney off (even though I have £3 riding on him)! We need Sturridge, Rashford or Vardy to finish our chances - if we had of had a born finisher in our first 11 today this would have been the best performance from us in the last 10 years.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 07:52 PM

Roy needs to put Vardy on instead of Rooney that could be the game changer in the second half, I can't see Rooney playing the full 90 mins

Posted by: OutstandingMixer 11th June 2016, 07:54 PM

A positive first half performance, just lacking that cutting edge so far. Russia have only had that one good chance really.

I don't understand why Kane is taking the corners. We seem to lack that free kick/corner kick specialist.

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 07:55 PM

Rooney got better as the half went on, thought Lallana/Ali were magnificent in the first half.

Kane has been anonymous and his corners are terrible!

As my dad perfectly analogized, he looks out of place, like an old man among young men. To be perfectly honest he hasn't got the pace of Lallana, Rose, Kane, or anyone spearheading the England attacks these days, if we are to play him I'd play him as an impact sub, maybe for the last 20 minutes or something, where we need to finish a game off.

He's a great player still, and we know that he can finish for England (literally and figuratively), but in this team with this style that we've been playing for the last few games he just doesn't seem to fit in.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 08:02 PM

Please put Vardy on for the second half, see what happens there or possibly Rashford even. Lallana/Alli have been good so far, Kane looking nervy, Rooney not done much.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:10 PM

I really fear for England I really do, after seeing Wales playing this afternoon, Wales have easily outclassed England so far, and that's coming from just seeing the first half of this match.

We've been miles better than Wales. and that is coming from someone that slates England at ever possible opportunity.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 08:19 PM

Russia playing much better now. Could be an goal from them possibly.

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 08:21 PM

This is painful to watch. GET IN THE f***ING AREA

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 08:25 PM

Surely Roy has to make a substitution now?

What a save that was! Unlucky Rooney.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:27 PM

Clever Rooney for missing that one.

Bring on Vardy please

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:28 PM

Fantastic free-kick from him.

Finally! We deserved that.

I'm sure my sister and her family will have heard the cheers from next door. She lives next door to Eric Dier's parents biggrin.gif

Posted by: Taylor Jago 11th June 2016, 08:30 PM

Yes! Only 16 minutes left and we've finally set a goal!

Posted by: Iz~ 11th June 2016, 08:30 PM

What a strike!

Now just hold off the Russians for another 18 minutes. Which I'm not trusting that we will do.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:33 PM

Jack Wilshire... mellow.gif

At least Rooney is off

Oh... it's Wilshere.

Now yes hold off Russia for the last 10 minutes and don't mess it up.

There goes our 3 points sad.gif

I never predicted that final scoreline

Posted by: Robot 11th June 2016, 08:48 PM

How frustrating. We completely deserved that and played fantastically to our credit, I can't believe we haven't won that.

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 08:50 PM

Sorry for swearing Mack sad.gif

Lesson learned- take our chances. For GODS sake.

Posted by: Dobbo 11th June 2016, 08:51 PM

WE NEVER CHANGE

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 08:51 PM

Absolutely woeful defending, it's why we won't come anywhere near to winning the Euros.

More annoyed about the fact England lost me money! Loads riding on the Wales game now.

Posted by: Mack 11th June 2016, 08:51 PM

Typical, same story, uninspiring England. Actually I thought might happen take our eyes off the boil in the final minute and this happens. Russia nevertheless will be delighted with the result. I don't think Wales need to worry at all. I still think Wales will beat England on Thursday. Just the same story time and time again for England. Think you are getting somewhere and then they mess it up big time.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:52 PM

My analysis... yes very frustrating to watch, we had better chances in the first half but couldn't find the net and balls it right up in the last dying minute. Enough said.

Posted by: Iz~ 11th June 2016, 08:53 PM

Oopsie. Apologies for being mystic.

Yeah, agree with what Rooney said, this'll make Wales vs England even more crucial than it already was. Fun fun fun.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 08:56 PM

Unfortunately I'm going to miss the England vs. Wales match with that 2pm kick off on Thursday, I have to watch that game on catch up. sob.gif

And still England haven't won their opening match at an European Championships out of 9 tournaments. Again that's why England should take the chances they made and they'll get punished for it which they did. Looking at today's matches, Wales would be the favourites for me from what I saw. England really need to improve in their next game. Absolute typical from England. Rooney and Kane, Sterling weren't good. They still are really vulnerable in defence and on the counter attack.

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 08:58 PM

Wales were not that great against Slovakia. England have way too much quality if they're on form. Annoying to concede in injury time, but it happens. Important thing now is to learn from the mistakes made today. Scoring in the first half will be crucial though.

Posted by: dandy* 11th June 2016, 08:59 PM

I'm quite optimistic after that, I think that's the best I've seen them play in an opening game for quite some time. The last minute equaliser was a shame but a draw with signs that we can play well bodes better than a flukey 1-0 win when we play awfully.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 11th June 2016, 09:00 PM

FACT: England have never won the first game of any European Championship - best were draws against Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, France and now Russia in 80, 92, 96, 2012 and 2016 respectively.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 11th June 2016, 09:01 PM

Well, I got that prediction right so that's one thing biggrin.gif I REALLY didn't see that late equaliser coming though, and it is a shame as we played very well and outplayed Russia for the whole game. Still, we shouldn't take this as a defeat as we DID play well and if we just don't lose that, then we should do better. Gonna be very interesting against Wales, they also played really well today and was met with a win... (I may also miss the first half though </3)

I'm still certain we'll win the Euro's. Completely certain.

EDIT - and today was really good for the most part! Really optimistic for the next few games obviously, don't want to set my hopes and expectations to high because we all know what happens then rolleyes.gif

Let's not bring up this fact, it blinds people with false hope that we will go on to win!

Posted by: OutstandingMixer 11th June 2016, 09:04 PM

We played well and should have won but that's football for you. I just hope that late goal doesn't deflate the players too much, as it was a positive performance overall. Just have to move on and beat the Welsh now.

I put money on -
A) England winning the match
B) Wayne Rooney scoring a goal.
C) A card being given between 6-11 minutes.

The moral of the story - never gamble, especially when you know next to nothing about the sport post 2004.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 11th June 2016, 09:11 PM

You should have put money on England squandering the win in the dying seconds. Always guaranteed!

Either that, missing a crucial penalty or having a crucial goal disallowed (hello Sol Campbell).

I went with a straight England win, seemed too good with a lot of Russian players out injured. Ah well, I'd won 3 bets in a row previously, so my luck was bound to run out!

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 09:16 PM

For me though after all the chances we had in the first half, we could have scored more goals, and Russia looked poor as anything, but hey ho that's football. We just have to play better, having 3 points is better than a point. mellow.gif never mind.

We played well, but we didn't really have that many chances. The only big one was the Rooney, apart from that they were either off target or comfortable saves. Hodgson messed up with his tactics, he reverted back to his defensive self. Not that it's a bad thing, but we don't really have the players to do that. Milner is disciplined, but not defensively that great. And Wilshere is not really known for being a playmaker.

Sterling's getting all the stick on social media, but he's the only player we have who can give us width. Kane was just terrible. Stood 5 yards offside for most of the game.

Posted by: Dobbo 11th June 2016, 09:37 PM

I really feel Wales vs England will be a draw & Russia will beat Slovakia so YET again we'll have it all to do in the last match (World Cup 2010 anyone?)

Very lucky the tournament is expanded to allow some 3rd placers though, means not quite as much pressure as there would otherwise be.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 11th June 2016, 09:49 PM

Why didn't Roy Hodgson play Vardy? why was Harry Kane taking corners? these are the types of things that let you know immediately that England are not going to win this tournament.

England are like the Arsenal of international football, they build your hopes up and ultimately they leave you feeling disappointed. I think Wales will qualify from the group after today's results.

And by mid June 2020 we will say the exact same thing again!

Posted by: Soy Adrián 12th June 2016, 09:07 AM

If we'd have held on at the end then Hodgson's tactics would have been vindicated. Everyone bar Kane played pretty well, I'd be tempted to put Sturridge in for the Wales game. We're still favourites for that, although might have to rethink our midfield as Dier will presumably track Bale and I don't want it to be Rooney and Alli tasked with picking up Ramsey's runs.

Posted by: Mdh 12th June 2016, 10:00 AM

Result or no result, there's no denying that yesterday we played some of the best football we have played in recent times. Our ball retention skills (especially after losing it) were superb bar a few mistakes and our attacking play was honed to perfection, especially in the mid second half. If we can tighten up our defence and not dedicate too many men forward on an attack where it isn't necessary (this is one of our only major frailties), we will be able to beat Wales but I'm up in arms as to whether we'll play at the same quality on Thursday. I really don't want the players to feel dejected and demotivated after yesterday - it's not overly important as I'm still relatively confident we'll qualify for the round of 16 and I hope they are too - we just need to keep the confidence we had yesterday and take our chances more.

Posted by: Mart!n 12th June 2016, 10:42 AM

Well they had to draw at some point in their group stage, hopefully they can still qualify just have to win against Wales and Slovakia, saying that Slovakia are a good team, Wales beating them was a surprise when Slovakia beat the World Champions (Germany) 3-1 recently. Russia are the weakest country in this group and we just drew against them. England need to score goals and on target, and play Vardy from the start, instead of Rooney. My main worry Slovakia could give us a good game, if we are not careful.

Posted by: Dobbo 12th June 2016, 10:44 AM

Really? I'd say Russia are the strongest team in our group. at least that's what the rankings state (which I admit aren't always the most accurate indicator). If anything Wales are the weakest on paper but they'll want the win more than England IMO.

Plus there's no way he'll drop Rooney who was man of the match last night. He does need to give Vardy some playing time though, I'd say give Kane a run around & if nothing sub Vardy on.

But that is partly our weakness. We had really good attacking transitional play, but at this level its naive to think at some point of the game your defence won't be under heavy pressure. We don't have the squad to cope with this unless we score 2/3 goals. England are much better than Wales and Slovakia and Wales will raise their game against us massively, but we're better than them. Plus England really have to get a result against Wales now. They have a better player than us, but that's it. My worry is, I expect Hodgson will play largely the same team again. You would expect Dier to track Bale, but that would mean Ali/Rooney tracks Ramsey's runs from midfield. We have a risk of being picked up on the counter attack.

Posted by: Soy Adrián 12th June 2016, 04:14 PM

I'd bring Wilshere in for Lallana and switch to a 4-2-3-1 with Rooney higher up (as good as he was last night, Russia's midfield was awful) and Alli cutting in from the left. Give Kane 45 minutes and if he's not cutting it, bring Sturridge on. The whole point of this squad is that we've got attacking options if someone isn't cutting it, we may as well use them.
