Like every major tournament, I've always started a seperate thread for England games, just because there is so much more interest in them from the general public.
Both teams suffering from all-time low lack of support for the national side. The media have finally realised England are in decline and will be until 2016 probably. Roy Hodgson was a controversial choice. His dinosaur tactics and tendecy to play a structured 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 is seen by many as not the way to play modern day football, but he stil persists that it is the best formation, and to his credit, it probably is the formation that suits the current English crop of players we have. After a dismal 2010 World Cup both privately and publically there is a lack of confidence in the French national team. Laurent Blanc sought to kick a lot of the old guard out in favour of younger, hungrier French players, which appears to have worked. Predictions? I shall say it will be a 1-1 draw. England scoring first, France equalising, then England defending for the point. Maybe catching France out on the counter attack/hoof ball. Hart Johnson Terry Lescott Cole Young Parker Gerrrard Milner Carroll Walcott |

We can certainly score past France, they're very beatable at the back, the main priority is to stop Cabaye, and then Ribery. Stop them and they become a hell of a lot weaker. Though they have a lot of options from the bench, particularly in Ben Arfa and Giroud as the additional striker.
The way we've played in the two friendlies, particularly the two goals we've scored, makes me much more confident we can get something from the game. Play direct (not hoof), getting the ball upfield quickly whilst the two centre halves aren't in the best positions, neither Rami or Mexes are particularly quick and they don't recover each other that well. They should play Koscielny IMO |

They should play Koscielny IMO I'm the same. We'll soak up pressure and hit them on the counter attack, the game is winnable, but easily loseable at the same time if we let them dictate too much. That's why I'd player Carroll, I really think he'd cause their centre backs massive problems. But I don't know whether Hodgson will want to play two out and out strikers in Welbeck and Carroll. I shouldn't have thought he would, especially with the sad news about Defoe. |

I'd expect Hodgson to play Young behind either Carroll or Welbeck, Milner on one side is likely given how solid he is - possibly on the right as protection for Johnson up against Ribery? Although that means we'll most likely have Downing on the opposite side, unfortunately.

Johnson will be fine against Ribery as long as we don't play too deep (which we inevitably will). |

Working on Monday, first major England match I'll have ever missed, devestating.
I can see us snatching a draw in this one based on the way we've come across in the two friendlies, but it won't be pretty. If we somehow manage to win I'll boldly predict we're getting to the Semis. |

Working Monday so I shall miss England's opener. Giving the last tornament match I worked through finished 5-1 to Germany, I guess it can't get much worse!
Take Ribery out of play, and we might just have a chance of nicking a result against them. Let's hope we don't have a Hand of Henry sort of thing happen to us |

France could be without Yann M'Vila as he is recovering from an ankle sprain.
France's team doctor said: "We are not optimistic for the 11th" I think it will be a 2-1 win to France. |

The whole nation moans at Capello playing 4-4-2 in South Africa. It then finally looks like we were moving away from that.. So what does Hodgson do ? Back to 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1)
Gerrard playing in a midfield two is pointless. He's played in a two this season at Liverpool and I can't remember him being effective in any of those games. His best performances have come when he's been played closer to the striker I'd play: Hart Johnson Terry Lescott Cole Parker Milner Gerrard Young Welbeck Carroll (4-3-3) Milner Parker Gerrard forming a midfield three. Carroll up front with Welbeck and Young playing in wide forward roles Not expecting this to be a good watch. France will have the majority of the ball whilst we sit back. A draw probably would be a good result, but we'd have to beat Sweden and Ukraine convincingly (France will probably do the same) if we want to win the group as it could come down to GD |

I'm far more confident of a 4-4-2 under Hodgson that I would be under anyone else to be honest given that's what he knows and plays, particularly when one of the '2' is a wide/attacking midfielder who can drop back somewhat. Whoever is manager and whatever formation we play we don't have the squad to be able to play intricate passing, possession football, so I'm quite happy do be disciplined and attack quickly.

Same really. Capello tried 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 etc. and we didn't have the players at all currently to play that. It's a mixture of possession football only really coming to the forefront in the last 6/7 years. Our players are over-coached generally, and not technically that good on the ball, whereas the rest of Europe are trained different. I think a midfield 3 of something like Henderson, McErachan (sp?) and Wilshere would be good to play possession football, but Lampard/Gerrard/Parker/Milner are not the types at all to play that style of football. And unfortunately we don't have a striker who is stong, technically good and fast. Welbeck could maybe become that player, but I'm yet to be 100% convinced. We can play 4-4-2, but drop back in to a hard to break down 4-5-1 when we're defending. The danger is though that if we ever go 2/3 goals down I don't think Hodgson has the tactics to mastermind a comeback. |

I think with our likely team the players are versatile enough to make the system relatively fluid, and able to switch between different formations. That means if it's not working we only need to substitute players who are playing poorly, rather than for tactical reasons.

That means if it's not working we only need to substitute players who are playing poorly, rather than for tactical reasons. Only problem is fluid, and switching are not parts of Roy Hodgson's tactics. He will always stick to a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation. It's his philosophy and belief. I saw as much at Liverpool when he tried 4-4-2 all the time with players who were not fit to play in a strict 4-4-2 formation. I agree sometimes you only need to change the personnel, but more often than not the issue is a tactical one rather than a playing one. Take yesterdays Russia-Czech game. The manager knew there was a problem with his tactics at half time rather than 2/3 players not finding their feet in the game. |

From twitter:
@Matt_Law_SM "Following on from @matt_lawton_dm I hear england will play same team that beat Belgium, minus Cahill, so Oxlade-Chamberlain starts" So that's: Hart Johnson Terry Lescott Cole Milner Parker Gerrard Oxlaide-Chamberlain Young Welbeck Surprised as I didn't think Hodgson would be the type to throw in an 18 year old against France |

England team to face France: Hart, Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole, Milner, Parker, Gerrard, Ox, Young, Welbeck.
Looking good, very impressive that he's playing The Ox. I'm starting to fade into delusional optimism again. |

Problem is we'll be really deep. It's all very well playing defensive, but one lapse of concentration, one moment of pure skill, or a 30 yard piledriver and you're f***ed.

Nasri going to cause us a lot of bother if we don't pick him up. Absolutely vital that Oxlade-Chamberlain/Young track back.
