BuzzJack Music Forum _ R&B and Hip-Hop _ Lil Dicky - Earth

Posted by: JosephAvery 15th April 2019, 09:07 PM

Apparently the video's got a whole host of stars in it too - DJ Khaled, Katy Perry, Halsey, Shawn Mendes and Adam Levine all rumoured. Very intrigued, Freaky Friday was definitely my guilty pleasure of 2019 :')

Posted by: Jαsє 15th April 2019, 09:38 PM

Freaky Friday was an embarrassment so not holding out much hope for this!

Posted by: Botchia 15th April 2019, 09:40 PM

Freaky Friday was a bop so hype

Posted by: dobbo 15th April 2019, 09:44 PM

I'm ready.

Posted by: John-James 16th April 2019, 01:24 PM

Here for Justin but I already know its going to be trash

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 17th April 2019, 06:48 PM

Titled 'Earth' (using the #WeLoveTheEarth as well) and it stars:

Justin Bieber
Ariana Grande
Halsey
Zac Brown
Brendon Urie
Miley Cyrus
Wiz Khalifa
Snoop Dogg
Kevin Hart
Adam Levine
Shawn Mendes
Charlie Puth
Sia
Hailee Steinfeild
Lil Jon
Rita Ora
Miguel
Katy Perry
Lil Yachty
Ed Sheeran
Leonardo DiCaprio
Meghan Trainor
Joel Embiid (basketball player)
Tory Lanez
John Legend
Bad Bunny
Psy
Kris Wu
Backstreet Boys
Benny Blanco
Cashmere Cat

Seems like it could be a Band Aid style thing - will be massive!

Posted by: Wall 17th April 2019, 06:58 PM

Meghan Trainor coming for one final number one!!!!!

Posted by: Liаm 18th April 2019, 11:25 AM

Strangely hyped for this, idc what anyone says, Freaky Friday was an absolute bop

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 18th April 2019, 02:50 PM

Short preview with Justin and Ariana's vocals - this is going to be mad laugh.gif

All artists will have vocals on the song, not just in the video. The comeback of Psy!

Also, all proceeds are going to The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which helps projects around the world in protecting vulnerable wildlife, climate resiliency, etc.

Oh wow this actually looks really exciting! And glad it’s for a great cause

Posted by: 365 18th April 2019, 03:24 PM

Ariana 'I don't know if I'm white or black' :rip:

Posted by: Bangtan Cody 18th April 2019, 05:19 PM

is the "white or black" comment a dig at people accusing her of blackfishing?

This is looking to be an iconic mess lmao. Like We Are The World but it doesn't take itself seriously.

Posted by: Moses 18th April 2019, 05:22 PM

Surprised they didn't save this for a gimmicky 'Earth Day' release on Tuesday (Earth Day). Guess that's why it's out this week though!

Interesting idea... could this revolutionise the 'big group ensemble' charity songs?

Posted by: blacksquare 18th April 2019, 07:10 PM

That Ariana line has killed me

GOODBYE EARTH

Posted by: LMLou 19th April 2019, 07:37 AM

Awww this is cute.
Shame that some artists literally get about 2 words but suppose they didn’t want the song being like half an hour

Decent enough song and for a great cause

Posted by: Wall 19th April 2019, 07:51 AM

ZEEEEEEBRA

IT'S ZE BRA

Posted by: Rooney 19th April 2019, 08:09 AM

Did I really just hear the line ‘We forgive You Germany’ LOL

Posted by: Jonjo 19th April 2019, 08:18 AM

I love this laugh.gif

The video is really good too. Such a great message!

My favourite line, it completely caught me off guard.

Posted by: Klumzee 19th April 2019, 10:07 AM

bit WTF on first listen but definitely growing on me! Quite original to have a charity song that's doesn't take itself so seriously and in turn will probably generate more publicity so clever move Leo! Love both the video and the song as they're very clear about what the intention is without coming across as preachy. I'm interested to see if radio take to it or whether it will remain a viral hit but I'm glad this is in the world and nice to see a climate change charity song for a change!

Posted by: Jack 19th April 2019, 11:23 AM

The video and the song as a whole package is great and a lot of fun, but not sure if I would listen to the song itself out of context.

Agreed.

It's fun but I'm really not going to feel the need to return to it... laugh.gif

Posted by: Liаm 19th April 2019, 01:29 PM

The video was so much fun and really joyous, really made me smile! The song is catchy af too, very odd so might take a few listen to stand on its own (if at all), but it's cute. I don't think it's meant to be a huge pop hit or anything though so that's fine. Maybe I'll go back to it but watch it as the video instead idk laugh.gif

Hey, I'm a zebra
No one knows what I do, but I look pretty cool
Am I white or black?

(my fave line is Brendon's "I'm a fat f***ing pig") laugh.gif

SCREAMING

Posted by: 365 19th April 2019, 10:58 PM

I know it’s meant to be jokey, but the ‘we forgive you Germany’ line is so silly and patronising, and very ironic when they’re a lot more eco-friendly than America!

I agree. I don’t find that line remotely funny, especially in 2019. So lazy.

Posted by: Liаm 20th April 2019, 12:01 PM

I hate that I'm kinda obsessed with this now ffs

A friend a BMG of mine who told me about this song ages ago said they’ve been expecting it to be a big #1 debut for ages. The video cost 1.5 million. But it could...miss the top 40?

Posted by: LMLou 20th April 2019, 02:25 PM

They really should’ve built more hype around this, think it would’ve helped. Even if they ended up setting expectations far too high it would’ve helped with initial sales and streaming
They also really don’t seem to be harping on all the big names at all. You woundnt know all the big celebs on it unless you look into it or actually watch the video

Posted by: dobbo 20th April 2019, 02:34 PM

Chris Brown confirmed as a bigger pull than all of the 'Earth' artists combined.

Hmmm not really sure what to make of it as a song, definitely not bad & the chorus is quite catchy (if basic as hell) but for a charity record all the excessive swearing & celebs bigging themselves up (as well as the questionable lyrics already highlighted in this thread) definitely make me lean away from it more. To me it doesn't feel very sincere at all & I have my doubts as to whether the majority of these celebs are in any way genuine environmentalists.

At least it is raising awareness & spreading a good word (not that I can even take any highground here whatsoever as I throw my milk carton into the non-recycling binbag).

Posted by: Dexton 20th April 2019, 03:30 PM

I suppose not having any featured artists doesn't help, Freaky Friday was obviously with Chris Brown but "Earth featuring Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Halsey, Wiz Khalifa, Kevin Hart, Miguel, Rita Ora, PSY, Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon, Adam Levine, Shawn Mendes, John Legend, Charlie Puth, Lil Yachty, Joel Embiid, Brendon Urie, Zac Brown, Sia, Hailee Steinfeld, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, Tory Lanez, Bad Bunny & Kris Wu" is probably too much

I agree awareness and hype seems zero to none. On Friday I was with friends/ pop fans and none of them knew it existed!

Even though it would have been a MESS I feel like a crediting like this would have helped the song a lot

Or maybe it’s because Katy Perry is on the song?

Posted by: JosephAvery 20th April 2019, 05:22 PM

It's funny cause I saw loads about this on my timeline in the lead up to its release - Bieber's name alone generated a load of publicity! I honestly think a long credit like that would only have helped the song get more of an initial fanbase boost from Arianators, Beliebers, etc trying to get their faves another hit. It would've been pretty short-lived cause otherwise I feel like it's quite well known there's big names involved in this song, certainly amongst the people I follow anyway.

It's not becoming a huge worldwide #1 cause it's just not good enough really - it's not got the "cool" factor of Freaky Friday or the catchiness/replayability either. It does the trick and for what it's worth I think it's a fun and unique take on the charity ensemble formula (a few dodgy lyrics aside), but I can't say I'm compelled to listen more than once.

Posted by: Jonjo 21st April 2019, 06:46 PM

Yeah. At the very least the crediting should've been "feat. Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry & Various Artists". I feel like those 3 names do the most on the song, so would benefit from a separate credit.

EDIT: I also don't think it helps having the cursing in the song. The video and lyrics (for the most part) are SO child friendly! Pretty sure that would've boosted YT views a whole lot more and probaly would've gone a bit more viral with little pre-schoolers dancing to it and stuff.

Freaky Friday took ages to take off, dunno why people were expecting this to be #1 straight away???

Freaky Friday was an instant top 20 hit and #1 in its third week, that's pretty fast! There's quite a difference between that and this I'd say - this one has a much vaster array of big names and guest stars who all have their own fanbases to show interest. Lil Dicky's more of a known name now thanks to Freaky Friday too, and the video was highly publicised. Perhaps not an instant #1 but I did expect a better start than this, and I struggle to imagine this being the sort-of thing radio will pick up on (Radio 1 didn't even bother with Freaky Friday).

Posted by: Chez Wombat 21st April 2019, 08:27 PM

It's got great intentions, the video is wonderfully animated, is sometimes quite funny (Leonardo DiCaprio's bit did make me chuckle) and it's actually quite a catchy chorus, shame then it's ruined by the absolutely awfully cringeworthy toilet and sex humour throughout and stupid lyrics about 'lol I'm an animal' as well as the country lyrics already mentioned in this thread which were a bit dodgy, it could've been a bit more serious and focused and made much more of an impact. As it stands, it's a bit of a mess and I don't know if I'll listen to it regularly, but I support it staying in the public eye as the message is of course a great one.

Posted by: Bré 1st May 2019, 06:42 PM

Well this is certainly a thing that exists. I don't know why Lil Dicky of all people is trying to make a new 'We Are The World', this really doesn't work on any level, apart from a decently made music video. And I did let out a solitary giggle at Lil Jon's cameo. I appreciate the message behind it but not surprised at all that this has underperformed so far.

Posted by: Mack. 13th May 2019, 01:13 PM

This probably one of the sweariest charity singles of all time.

Justin Bieber as Baboon
Ariana Grande as Zebra
Halsey as Lion cub
Zac Brown as Cow
Brendon Urie as Pig
Hailee Steinfeld as Mushroom ("Common Fungus")
Wiz Khalifa as Skunk
Snoop Dogg as Marijuana
Kevin Hart as Kanye West
Adam Levine as Vultures
Shawn Mendes as Rhinos
Charlie Puth as Giraffe
Sia as Kangaroo
Miley Cyrus as Elephant
Lil Jon as Clam
Rita Ora as Wolf
Miguel as Squirrel
Katy Perry as Pony
Lil Yachty as HPV
Ed Sheeran as Koala
Meghan Trainor, Joel Embiid, Tory Lanez, John Legend as playback vocalists
PSY, Bad Bunny, Kris Wu as the "We Love the Earth" choir
Backstreet Boys as the Credits
Leonardo DiCaprio as Himself

Lil Dicky a one-trick pony?
