Uhsting's Chart turns 10 in December!

Uhsting's Chart is a weekly chart that brings 50 mostly new songs every week from all around the world regardless of language. The most common genre of Uhsting's Chart is pop, alternative, electronic, indie, rock and contemporary classical. Each week I listen to a bunch of New Music Friday playlists thanks to Spotify, and discover new songs from different personal charts and song contests.

I have been making Uhsting's Chart since I was really small (12 years old) and I am proud to have continued to do that for 10 years! Although there are periods of hiatus in between, the present iteration begins in March 2020 with a time-consuming but the most sustainable method in keeping all the new entries released mostly in the past few weeks.

I first got infatuated to listening to songs when I was small through the radio. I then got into habit of listening to the radio chart every week to vibe with the latest new songs. It was also at that time I had more sources of finding great songs around the world. I first bumped into a popular personal chart TheGeoKing on YouTube back at the time and found that there are a lot of songs that are yet to be discovered, and quickly got disillusioned by the quality of some of the popular songs I was listening to, so I created my own chart to document my latest findings. I also wanted to share my chart to the public and YouTube became a good platform to do so. At first, I only created videos using Windows Movie Maker, only to switch to PowerDirector some years later. It was pretty potato quality but that's how my first video got uploaded to YouTube. tongue.gif

Throughout the years, there have been a lot of changes to how I chart the songs, or there is a specific mechanism in the movement of the songs. Sometimes, I ran into the problem of songs piling up my playlist because I didn't know how to select good songs, which frustrated me and caused me to give up the chart momentarily or redo the chart completely -- the birth of the non-mainstream chart. I remember there was a time I had multiple no. 1s! At first, my top 50 personal chart proves to be quite popular. As time goes, views dwindled and I started to find ways to keep the number of views high enough. It also didn't help I'm quite a busy person so I often fall behind with the chart. Currently, I have found a good way to select the top 50 songs every week for my chart and a good way to rank the songs so that it doesn't feel formulaic that the songs move in a certain way on the chart. I have also tried to maintain the schedule, though it can be quite tricky! Nevertheless, I really enjoy the process of finding new songs, albeit a hugely time-consuming process!

There is also a notable shift in my music taste throughout the years, some quite questionable and indicative of my problematic era. kink.gif I first started with some relatively well-known songs, and included some songs from very small channels to promote their music. Then, I began to take a lot of songs from personal charts. Eurovision also helped me to find loads of great songs. Around the mid-2010s, I ventured into the realm of contemporary classical, and I really loved a lot of the tracks there. That became a hugely dominant genre in the chart (which might have turned people away). Probably around the late-2010s, sad emotional songs became the main type of songs that is found on my chart. Now, I can be proud of the hugely diverse range of tracks that I have, that features different moods and genres.

End of the long story of my chart, there will be a special video released on my YouTube channel on the first week of December, featuring top 25 songs on the 1st week of my chart and top 25 songs on the current week of my chart. Stay tuned! cheer.gif

My thoughts:
25: 2021
That was the song that introduced me to dubstep in 2011 but that is a decently produced Hong Kong rock song in 2021. Rock songs are somewhat not the most popular genre in Hong Kong despite being the more superior genre in my opinion.

24: 2021
Crush On You is really quirky and continues the dubstep trend. However, Queendom is levels above Crush On You for me with the soundscape they managed to produce and the message behind the lyrics is deep. The production value is just better for Queendom.

23: 2021
This was a cute song from Japan and the vocals are wonderful, but the style in Violence is just fabulous. I absolutely adore the grungy sound and the vocals are not kind at all which is appropriate for the genre.

22: 2011
An absolute Gaga classic which basically defines the old Gaga era back in the days! Comparing to The Worst, The Worst pales considerably and it is not the best VICTORIA song in my opinion but this is still decent.

21: 2021
As much as I love the style of Beyoncé, this song is not her best sadly. Heartbeat is fresh and sounds unique. The instrumentation is intricate but evokes emotions. The vocals are special which adds to the uniqueness of the song.

20: 2021
I really love Zee Avi back then. The song is cute and this is lowkey a banger but You're Not Harry Styles will probably grow a lot on me with the special lyrics. YNHS also varies more than TBoMJ so in this respect YNHS sounds less dull. This is probably the comparison of the weaker songs.

19: 2021
Never Coming Back is simply better. The instrumentation, the lyrics and the vocals are unforgiving and leaves a more long-lasting impression than Rising Sun. Rising Sun does have good drops so there is that.

18: 2021
I'm seriously questioning my taste with Clear As Day. I hardly like any country music nowadays and I believe I "liked" this song because Scott won American Idol back then. I Wanna Leave sounds promising and could grow on me. This is another comparison of the weaker songs.

17: 2021
Suéltate is just a lot more instant with the style, the emphatic drop and the vocals. While With Ur Love is a nice cute song, it couldn't cope with the slayage of Suéltate.

16: 2011
Back then FIFA songs are actually good and indie songs get a lot of attention. I think this is a late grower for me and I really admire the style here. Ayltawbad has a melancholy style but is not as deep and the instrumentation is not as intricate too but it still sounds astounding.

15: 2021
This is probably not the best Evanescence song here as the chorus is not very powerful. Oh My God on the other hand is a banger and a proof that Adele can serve upbeat bops and not just ballads. I also quite like the melody in Oh My God.

14: 2011
As much as I really like how quirky Literal Legend is, Bubble Pop was ahead of its time (before K-Pop became famous) and the chorus is memorable and boppery.

13: 2021
This is the first of the more difficult comparisons because both songs are really good. Ugly is probably my most favourite song at the time because the melody is sooo good, but Grace Davies wows me totally with this ballad. The instrumentation builds up extremely well and the lyrics are wonderful. I'm glad she recorded her original single down and we're able to enjoy it on streaming platforms.

12: 2011
As much as I like the intricacy of Otomo and the unique instrumentation there, Stayin' Alive is a lot more instant and accessible, and is a great cover of the legendary song in J-rock style.

11: 2011
Titanium is without a doubt one of the best songs of the decade. Sia's vocals are powerful and this is back when David Guetta produced bops after bops. Keep On Believing on the other hand is very unique and intricate but it takes time to get used to. I believe Keep On Believing could grow on me further.

10: 2021
It Girl is one of the better songs of Jason Derulo but I'm cringing a bit at that oops. woohooo!!! is musically a lot more complicated and interesting. The song demonstrates a wide range of character and the melody is absolutely wonderful.

9: 2021
Another batch of more difficult comparisons because both songs are absolutely amazing at the time. Starlight aged a bit for me but the instrumentation is sound and interesting. Vega is just other-worldly with the vocals and the soundscape. This song is just spectacular... When you compare a song to one of the contenders for the best song of the year, this is always a tall order.

8: 2021
Both ballads against one another but Reassemble Myself wins it for me because the instrumentation is a notch better. I really like how the strings and percussion add a new layer of awe to the song. Up pales in comparison with the less thoughtfully arranged instrumentation but still astounding nonetheless.

7: 2011
Sorry Pete! We Found Love is the banger of the time and Calvin Harris knows how to make good buildups and drops. This was also about when EDM meets pop and this song fuses both wonderfully. You could say Calvin Harris pioneered the fusion. On the other, Physical Presence builds up amazingly towards the end with a final big drop, but sadly it took really long for me to love this masterpiece. sad.gif

6: 2011
Starry Eyed is another classic banger at the time and Ellie Goulding's vocals are really special. To be fair both songs can't be compared fairly as both of them are totally different genres. Autopsy has some insane sound production and is one of the few songs which could deliver in all 9 minutes and not be boring at all. Thus, this is another difficult comparison for me.

5: 2021
This is one of the comparisons with weaker songs, or maybe put in this way: both songs are very polarised. Hangover is very party-like but it does feel a bit disturbing now thinking.gif Hengitä is as polarising as it could be with the style and the vocals, but the uniqueness wins it for me here.

4: 2021
Just a Kiss is nice but I don't think this should be as high as 4 back in the days sorry. Letter coming from the 1st place last week automatically wins it for me. This song is better than Otomo and Keep On Believing in the way that the beat is even more complicated and the buildup and release is done to perfection. The sound of the synths can be irritating at times but that's pretty much the point of the song. I would say Letter is an art!

3: 2011
Shake It Out is possibly the best song of 2011 and is the song that introduced to the legendary Florence + The Machine. The style really shines through and was way ahead of its time. OOO DADDY just can't be compared to this masterpiece, though I love how outlandish this sounds.

2: 2021
The One That Got Away is a decent bop by Katy Perry but probably not her best at the time, especially coming right after Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.). Stupid Boy is a lot more coherent and well-structured than OOO DADDY, and it fuses the style of COBRAH and Adam Lambert's Ghost Town perfectly. SLAYYYYYY

1: 2021
I really liked Mr. Know It All back in the days because the melody is amazing, but if you compare this to the level of production, the message behind the lyrics and the melody of Cisgender, Cisgender has to be the better song. The vocals could come across as irritating for some but this is just raw emotion here and everything is just superbly done. Hats off to Shamir!

In the end I liked 17 songs in 2021 compared to 8 songs in 2011 which shows that my taste has changed dramatically. kink.gif I do think I liked more songs in 2011 than I expected though.

What is your more preferred year?

It's hard to choose between the two years, there are many songs I've haven't heard from your 10 year anniversary list.
From my perspective on the songs I liked in both 2011 and 2021 is like this:
2011 is my childhood year, 2021 is my young adulthood year.
