Ronnie O'Sullivan says having a crowd at the World Snooker Championship is an "unnecessary risk".

World Snooker says the Sheffield event will host a "reduced crowd" after discussions with government.

Spectators will be asked to "follow a code of conduct" at the event, which begins in Sheffield on 31 July.

But speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the idea of having a smaller crowd, O'Sullivan said: "You aren't really achieving anything."

The five-time world champion added: "Having people there but not enough people doesn't look good. Either pack it out and say we don't actually care or just go 'we aren't having anyone'."

The tournament has been chosen as one of a handful of events to stress-test the UK government's guidance on fans returning to elite sporting events after the coronavirus shutdown.

World Snooker Tour chairman Barry Hearn said players who have commented that the tournament will not be the same without fans "will be thrilled".

Fans have already been asked if they would like the chance to keep their ticket and those who responded stating they would will now be given a place among the crowd at the Crucible Theatre.

I shall watch quite a lot of it. At least they will be proper matches with a decent number of frames.

Snooker players are being treated like "lab rats" by allowing spectators into the Crucible Theatre for the World Championship, says Ronnie O'Sullivan.

The tournament, which begins on Friday, will be the first indoor sporting event with crowds, allowing around 300 supporters to attend each session.

Qualifier Anthony Hamilton, who suffers from severe asthma, says it is "ridiculous" and "too early" for fans.

Five-time world champion O'Sullivan said players "all run a bit of a risk".

A number of sports have already returned behind closed doors but snooker will be the second government-backed pilot event after the Surrey v Middlesex friendly in cricket to be staged in front of fans.

Those that have booked tickets to attend the Sheffield venue will be placed in 'bubbles' of up to four people - limited to a maximum of two households - and will be socially distanced from others in the arena.

Temperature checks will not be in place and face masks must be worn around the venue but can be removed once seated inside.

World number 48 Hamilton pulled out of the Tour Championship - the first event that was played on the sport's return - because of health concerns and called the decision to allow people to take off their masks in the auditorium "a mad thing".

He added: "Let's say one person gets ill and dies from the Crucible, that is one person who has died for no reason, just for entertainment.

"I won't be comfortable in there personally, I don't know why anybody would be comfortable, we all know it is airborne."

And there it is, Judd Trump becomes the second player to make 100 centuries in a season. That is a great achievement. No emotion from him when he did it though.

Posted by: Suedehead2 31st July 2020, 09:40 PM

Trump goes through but it was a tough match for him.

Posted by: Mack. 1st August 2020, 09:23 AM

It was a tough match for him, Tom Ford gave him a scare there. No Hazel Irvine presenting this year due to a family illness and wish her and the family all the best. No John Virgo commentating due to him being in Spain.

They've started using recorded applause for centuries and the end of frames.

Four-time champion John Higgins made a maximum 147 break but could not avoid a shock 13-11 defeat by Kurt Maflin in the World Championship second round.

Scot Higgins, 45, has been runner-up the last three years and led 11-10, having trailed 7-4 and 10-8.

But Norway's Maflin, 36, responded in stunning fashion, taking three in a row to progress to the quarter-finals.

Higgins' brilliant 147 came in the 12th frame and was the first maximum made at the Crucible Theatre since 2012.

In a tremendous tussle, Higgins had already made a century and added six further breaks of 50 or more, but Maflin held himself together in fine manner with runs of 80, 75 and 63 for the biggest win of his career.

Maflin will face the winner of the second-round tie between Anthony McGill and Jamie Clarke next, guaranteeing a qualifier in the semi-finals.

Posted by: Mack. 7th August 2020, 03:33 PM

Those three frames in the final session with Selby and Saekngham took longer than Ronnie's first round match with Un-Nooh.

Posted by: Mack. 7th August 2020, 10:58 PM

Defending champion Judd Trump moved into the quarter-finals of the World Championship with a nervy 13-11 win over Yan Bingtao.

Scotland's Anthony McGill is on course to cause an upset in his first World Championship semi-final with a 6-2 lead over Kyren Wilson.

Some spectators will be allowed at the Crucible for the final tomorrow and on Sunday.

Posted by: King Rollo 14th August 2020, 05:57 PM

What an extraordinary final frame that was. ohmy.gif I don't watch much snooker but I'm glad I saw the end of that semi-final.

Posted by: Mack. 14th August 2020, 06:47 PM

It was the most extraordinary frames I've ever seen in snooker. The heir to Taylor v Davis.

Already Ronnie O'Sullivan have levelled at 13-13 after being 13-9 down.

Well done Kyren Wilson and Anthony McGill both played their parts in an epic.

Posted by: Mack. 14th August 2020, 08:44 PM

First time in Crucible history both semi finals have gone to a decider in the same year.

Posted by: Suedehead2 14th August 2020, 09:15 PM

So it's a double W final - Wilson v Whingebag.

Posted by: Mack. 15th August 2020, 12:53 AM

Very few in snooker moan about their cue action after scoring over 250 unanswered points and winning the decider to reach the World Championship final.

Favourite would be Ronnie going into this.

It was take something to match today the most extraordinary day of snooker I've seen.

QUOTE
Selby said afterwards: "I felt like it was a little bit disrespectful the way he played, every time I got him in a snooker he just went down and hit the ball at 100mph and it could have gone anywhere.

"Whether he was just in that frame of mind but felt it was a little disrespectful for me at the table."

Five-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was pegged back but leads Kyren Wilson 10-7 after a fascinating first day of the World Championship final.

O'Sullivan was gifted opportunities as he opened up an 8-2 lead but a rejuvenated Wilson responded by taking five of the next seven frames.

Posted by: Mack. 16th August 2020, 10:18 PM

Ronnie O'Sullivan claimed his sixth World Championship title with a dominant 18-8 victory over Kyren Wilson.

O'Sullivan draws level with Ray Reardon and boyhood hero Steve Davis on world crowns, and surpasses Stephen Hendry on the all-time list of ranking event wins with a record 37 titles.

Although Wilson battled back to 10-7, O'Sullivan wrested total control with a run of eight frames on Sunday.

O'Sullivan, 44, is the oldest champion since Reardon, who was 45 in 1978.

The Englishman collects £500,000 in prize money, moving back up to second in the world behind last year's champion Judd Trump.

It was the biggest winning margin in a final since 2008, when O'Sullivan defeated Ali Carter by the same scoreline.

The man is a complete genius. The first snooker player.to win a ranking tournament in four separate decades. Incredible. His comebacks against Selby and Williams were brilliant.
