16 Mabel - Don't Call Me Up

Despite not being the biggest chart hit of the year for me, Mabel's Don't Call Me Up is undoubtedly one of her biggest and best songs to date. High Expectations, her debut album, didn't really hit the mark for me in terms of most of the tracks being as solid as this and Mad Love (which is yet to come in the countdown!), but at least we have this. Don't Call Me Up and Mad Love are both quite similar, but each have their own unique vibes that make them worth listening to back-to-back. Don't Call Me Up has a more abrupt tone and suits Mabel perfectly. I remember hearing this live when I saw her as a support act, and she killed it. She had everybody moving and really commanded the audience. It's great to see someone like Mabel break through, but hopefully we have a more cohesive album next time around.

15 Camila Cabello - Shameless

Shameless (coupled with Liar) gave us the first taste of what was to come from Camila Cabello's sophomore album Romance. She definitely did not disappoint with this song; the one I was drawn to most of the two. The song immediately entered my chart at #1 and stayed around for many weeks, and from there Camila went on to score a number of other #1 singles from the very same era. This song is such a beautiful ballad, and really proves how great a singer she is. It wasn't like Liar (probably the song that gave most people what they were hoping for), but I fell in love instantly and it's definitely among my favourite songs from the album, if not of her discography. She manages to give us vulnerability as well as empowerment all in the space of the three minutes the song runs for, and I'm here for it.

14 Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer

The moment Taylor's seventh album Lover dropped, Cruel Summer was immediately among my top three songs from the album. We had this, so classically Taylor and one that desperately needed to be a single (and probably never will be now), Afterglow and several other songs screaming for attention. This is up-beat Taylor at her best, while still singing about heartbreak and the breakdown of a relationship. It's an incredible three minutes of music, and really shows progression in Taylor's songwriting because this is so elevated when compared to the likes of Out of the Woods, Bad Blood, etc. More of this for the inevitable eighth album please, Taylor. The song managed to stick around for a while in my personal chart, becoming another top 10 hit for Taylor!

13 Jonas Brothers - Sucker

The Jonas Brothers - comprising Nick, Joe and Kevin - returned to the world of music as a threesome in 2019 with their first single in however many years; Sucker. Sucker was an immediate invitation to join a world of fresh, new pop that was going to reel us in to loving these men all over again. All grown up and ready to give us more mature sounding pop, Sucker was a great way to reintroduce themselves to the world and to bring new fans on board too. The video is a treat, Nick's vocals are a treat. Everything about this worked perfectly for the boys, and the song rocketed straight to #1 in my personal chart, and has recently just re-entered after seeing them live. 2019 wasn't ready for the Jonas Brothers, and neither was I tbh, but give it to us in 2020 please I'm thirsty x

12 Lauv & Troye Sivan - i'm so tired...

i'm so tired... was the first time I sat up and took notice of Lauv as an artist in his own right, and his collaboration with Troye Sivan is mighty fine. The song came at a time where I was already on a high listening to Troye's music (namely his second album Bloom). The song catapulted to #1 in my chart and spent many weeks floating around the top 10 thereafter. It's such a dreamy, beautiful song that describes the tire and torture of love songs all around us. Both Lauv and Troye's voices go hand in hand perfectly together, and this is one dream team that I'd love to hear more from in the future. Shame it's not on Lauv's debut album, but we can hold out hope for another one-off or a feature on Troye's third album. This song particularly popped for me too when Troye performed it live on his Bloom tour early in 2019. It was such a moment, and even without the presence of Lauv, Troye managed to make it one of the songs from the set that you'd never forget.

11 Emeli Sandé - Free as a Bird

I've spoken so much about Emeli already, and how positive an impact she's had with her third album REAL LIFE. There's so much that can be said about the closing song from the album Free as a Bird, though. This is the one song from REAL LIFE that I really resonate with the most. To me, it translates beautifully the story of finally being free of whatever's holding you down, taking a moment to absorb all of the goodness within you and around you when all of the toxicity once was there has been removed. Realising your potential, spreading your wings and flying. It particularly moves me when I link it to my own mental health and how I've overcome so many troubles, barriers and angst and arrived at a healthier place. The song went to #1 in my chart as soon as I'd listened to the album in full, and it stayed in my chart for a good number of weeks after. If there's any Emeli song you need to hear, it's 100% this one. So simple, yet so powerful.

10 The Chainsmokers & 5 Seconds of Summer - Who Do You Love

In terms of solely their own music, 5 Seconds of Summer had a relatively quiet 2019. However, they did team up with The Chainsmokers not only to release this absolute beauty of a song - Who Do You Love - but also to go on a North American tour with them. So while they've not been completely silent, it's good to know they'll be back in full force at the end of next month with new album CALM. Back to Who Do You Love though, and this song is quite possibly one of my favourites they've put their name to. Obviously with The Chainsmokers on board, we expect a massive beat and drop in the chorus, but it really is spectacular. With 5SOS' vocals on top of this, it makes for an incredible three minutes of music and it's great that they really are going in a different direction to predictably boyband pop that we're used to from so many in the same lane as them. Who Do You Love managed two weeks atop my personal chart at #1 before fading out, but still managing a decent run overall.

9 Katy Perry - Never Really Over

She was back. For a brief minute. Never Really Over righted the wrongs that had come before it from both the Witness era and her collaborations with other artists (let's not even give 365 any attention here). Katy really delivered the goods with Never Really Over, going back to her pop roots, while at the same time sounding fresh and innovative with a song that really pops and goes off whenever I listen to it. Sadly, this didn't last long though as she went on to release Small Talk and then Harleys in Hawaii, both of which don't even come close in terms of quality. However, let's not focus on them right now. Never Really Over entered my chart at #2 in the same week that Ritual pipped her to the #1 spot, but it managed to overtake the following week before spending a considerable number of weeks in the chart afterwards. Here's hoping that once Katy's had time to evaluate where she's at and by the time her next album comes our way, there's plenty more bops like this to enjoy.

8 Mabel - Mad Love

Although most people prefer Don't Call Me Up and like to describe Mad Love as an inferior copycat version, to me Mad Love is a million times more enjoyable, and is by far the best single Mabel's put out to date. It did take a while for me to fully get into the song, because I was originally one of the naysayers that thought it sounded too similar to her previous efforts and it did seem to be in very quick succession, however over time it's grown into this beautiful flower of a song that showcases the best of what she has to offer. The song managed to reach the top 10 in my personal chart, but didn't quite get to the #1 spot - a feat particularly amazing seeing as all of the remaining songs in the countdown are #1s from my chart. Coupled perfectly with the song is the music video, and for me it's her best too, one that when I'm at friends' houses drinking or whatever, I'll always pay attention when it comes on the music channels because it really is THAT GOOD *.*

7 ZAYN - There You Are

The first member to go it solo from One Direction, and my personal favourite, Zayn released his second album Icarus Falls in 2018, however There You Are was still charting for me in early 2019, hence why it's managed to sneak its way into the countdown (and so high up too!). This, to me, is undoubtedly Zayn's best song, sitting on the throne next to the likes of PILLOWTALK, fOoL fOr YoU, etc. This was such a massive missed opportunity for Zayn though. Despite Icarus Falls performing very poorly compared to his first album Mind of Mine, there could have been some salvation had the singles been handled better. With such a mish-mash of average songs being released prior, There You Are being ultimately the best song on the album and of Zayn's solo career to date could have seen it stick around for longer, and maybe achieve better. Alas, it was not meant to be. And I'm still sat here waiting on the day I'll get to hear all of this perfect music live, but doubt I ever will, sadness.

6 Greyson Chance - Boots

Inches away from having two songs in the top 5, Greyson Chance finishes at #6 with Boots, a standalone single bridging the gap between his album portraits and his upcoming second album, due to be released at some point this year (new single Dancing Next to Me is released at midnight tonight, GO STREAM IT EVERYONE x). Boots is a brilliant slice of alternative pop; Greyson standing tall and the music video showing his growth and the challenges he's overcome since finding fame back when he was younger. Boots has such a catchy melody, a chorus to die for and his voice sounds so stunning. I can't wait to hear this live in April, if he actually decides to perform it. Hopefully it's not overlooked. The song shot straight to #1 in my chart when it was released, and honestly if it weren't for a certain other song of Greyson's as well as some of the tracks from portraits, this would probably be sitting tall among the absolute best he's released. Alas, it's done remarkably to make the top 10 having been released a lot later than his other music in 2019.

5 Camila Cabello - Easy

I was waiting patiently for that one song of Camila's that would click with me on such a personal level when we were being drip-fed songs from her second album Romance. We had Shameless and Liar, the former of which I fell in love with, but not quite so much on a personal level where I could really relate to it. We had Cry For Me, which felt like a fresher cut from her debut album, and of course Living Proof which isn't near being her best. Easy came along though, and my god I don't think I've loved a song so much so instantly. THIS was what I was waiting for and wanting from Camila, and it's such a beautiful, emotional song. Describing how she always thought that she'd be hard to love but one person making it seem so easy, the song really clicked with me and I found myself pinpointing scenarios in my own life that this could easily be applied to. Every time I listen it makes me so emotional and I get caught up in the moment for those three minutes. I really can't wait to hear this on tour later this year, it's going to be a beautiful, pure moment.

4 Tiësto, Jonas Blue & Rita Ora - Ritual

After releasing her second album Phoenix, Rita went on to appear in several collaborations throughout 2019 - namely R.I.P. with Sofia Reyes and Carry On with Kygo - but none of them came close at all in terms of quality to Ritual. Teaming up with Jonas Blue and Tiësto on Ritual, Rita lent her vocals to one of the absolute best songs of the year, and one that I still jam out to in the car, at home, or wherever else I am. It's Rita at her absolute best, and ends up being her highest appearance in the countdown (and the same for both Jonas Blue and Tiësto). The song managed to outdo Katy Perry's Never Really Over in my personal chart by entering at #1 before Katy overtook the following week, but the song stuck around in the top 10 for weeks before starting its descent. It's a massive shame the song didn't perform *too* well officially, and it's quite surprising (although maybe not) considering some of the trash the UK public allowed into the top 10 in 2019. Hopefully this doesn't prevent any dream collaborations like this happening again any time soon, because this is an absolute highlight from all three artists' discographies.

3 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita

Señorita was the second collaboration from Shawn and Camila Cabello that we didn't know we needed in our lives until it landed. A massive improvement on their first musical outing together, I Know What You Did Last Summer, the song was a perfect bop for the summer and really shows how far they've both come as artists. Their dreamy vocals go together perfectly on a steamy song with an equally steamy music video to match that has everything perfect in it - lovely scenes between Shawn and Camila, Shawn shirtless and Shawn with clothes on still looking absolutely damn fine. The song spent several weeks at the top of my personal chart, and managed to stay around creating a lengthy chart run for many weeks thereafter. Undoubtedly this is one song that will become a classic in both artists' discographies down the line, and rightly so. It became one of Shawn's most successful singles in the UK, reaching the #1 spot and even returning after taking a knock from some of the other big sellers of the year. It was great to see Shawn doing so well, and hopefully this is something we can see happen again when he returns with new music (hopefully very soon). So much love for this song, even though you've probably worked out by now it's been outdone in this countdown by his other 2019 single.

2 Shawn Mendes - If I Can't Have You

Just missing out on the top spot of the countdown, but still managing to perform VERY well considering some of the songs in the top 10 is the first of Shawn Mendes' 2019 releases - If I Can't Have You. Maybe a bit of a surprise that this has ended up finishing higher than Señorita considering how monumental that song ended up being, but there's just something really special about If I Can't Have You that I can't quite pinpoint, but every time I listen to it it's like I'm listening for the first time all over again. The completely euphoric and anthemic sound to the song just leaves me feeling so happy, wanting to get up and dance, clap my hands to the beat, and sing along at the top of my lungs. Shawn's at the top of his game in terms of vocals on this track, and obviously the video is a treat for the eyes too with him in his vest and being very ~sensual~.

It's not Shawn's very best single, but it's one that I'll never really tire of, and (not to discredit Señorita) probably the song that I wish had performed better officially of the two, oops. This is the sort of direction I'd be very happy with Shawn going in for his upcoming fourth album, despite being very throwaway pop in a sense. Unfortunately the song was released a short while after I saw him live on tour, so I didn't get to experience it live but from the videos I've seen on YouTube of the performance, I can only imagine it must have been such a MOMENT. Incredible song from such an incredible year for music - now feed me some more in 2020 please Shawn x

1 Greyson Chance - white roses

Where to even begin talking about white roses? Ugh, there's so much to say that I can't quite translate into words but I'll give it a go anyway. My #1 song of 2019 is, of course, Greyson Chance's song white roses; which eventually became a single from his album portraits. That was news I could not have been any more excited about when we found out, and that it was getting the music video treatment too. Of the song itself though, the moment I had my first listen through of portraits and I was making my way through the tracks, we got to white roses and it immediately clicked with me. I think, for a long time now (certainly over the past couple of years), I've listened to music more and more making connections with the lyrics in them as opposed to just plain-sailing enjoying them because they've got a good beat or they sound like the typical pop songs you'd expect me to like (although I can still do that with songs). The lyrics in white roses just speak to me in a way that no other song on the album, or of Greyson's, or in general throughout 2019, did and that's what makes it so special to me. It's one of those I'll always be able to relate to, or pinpoint to a time in my life and look back on it fondly thinking 'thanks for that Greyson, you really helped me with that'.

Further to the song itself and about seeing Greyson live - two times, once in London and once in Glasgow - witnessing and hearing him sing white roses as the encore to his set, and hearing him speak about what the song meant, how it came about and what it now means to the community of fans that have and continue to support him, is just amazing. I have videos of both times he performed the song and look back at them regularly, either in full on my camera roll or on Instagram, and it's such a beautiful performance. You can really tell it's a song that Greyson holds in such a high regard, as much as I do. It was a beautiful moment both times. It's crazy how much a song can come to mean to you; the power of music is real. If you haven't heard white roses, please do because it's such a fantastic song and any time I've recommended it to friends who otherwise wouldn't listen to Greyson out of choice, they've either added it to playlists because they've liked it when I've played it, or say they really love the song.

In terms of my personal chart, white roses spent two weeks at the top and became one of my longest-running songs in 2019 before re-entering again at the top spot for a third non-consecutive week at #1 after seeing him live. Maybe it will do the same again this year after I've seen him live in London? We shall see. For now, this is damn well Greyson's best song to date and I can only hope that other songs of Greyson's, or any other artist, resonate with me in the ways this does. Absolute perfection, and that's just the album/single version - the acoustic version is so lovely too and adds another dynamic to the song that's not in the original, with Greyson's vocals sounding more honest and raw.

YES at 'If I Can't Have You' correctly finishing higher than 'Senorita' cheer.gif I was always disappointed in its chart fortunes too, deserved just that little bit more impact only to be instantly overshadowed by 'Senorita' sad.gif But justice has been served here and will be served in my EOY as well (eventually kink.gif)
